Recognized as one of the liveliest of the arts, cinema is both a means of creative expression and a powerful medium of mass communication. It
is a popular means of entertainment as well as an instrument of social change. Realizing its vast potential, the government has been promoting
cinema in the country for the past many years. The National Film Awards like various other promotional schemes of the government aim at
encouraging the production of quality films.

Started on the recommendation of the Film Enquiry Committee (Headed by S.K.Patil) as an annual incentive in 1954, the state film awards strive
to promote aesthetic and technical standards of films. The nomenclature of the awards was changed to National Film Awards in 1966. The awards
have since come a long way to cover the entire spectrum of Indian cinema.

Initially, only three awards were instituted :- the President’s Gold Medal for the best feature film and the best documentary and the Prime
Minister’s Silver Medal for the best children’s Film. The medallions were later changed to Swarna Kamal and Rajat Kamal. Cash prizes were also
added to these awards subsequently.

The need to promote cinema made the government introduce awards in various Indian languages and dialects in 1955 itself. Separate awards for
artistes and film technicians were introduced in 1968.

and Chitra received the award @ 1997

Minsara Kanavu was released in 1997 but it was produced for certification in 1996 itself. Jury considers the year of certification not the release. Take Andhimandharai, its too similar.

Hope it clarifies.

rajeshkrv, thanks for sharing the info. Infact, I had the same thoughts when I was going thru' the list and your post said it all.

dinesh2002, are you sure these details are authentic? As far as I remember (and as rajeshkrv) mentioned, awards for playback singing were introduced only in 1969 (and PS was the first to receive it). But then it was just one award (male/female). It was in the year 1976 that separate awards for male and female playback singing were instituted and SJ won the award then for Senthoorapoove... song.

Hey, i accept ARR gave some great music in Meenaxi and Swades but before that try to listen "Swarabishekam", it is one of the best effort Vidhyasagar in the last decade and truly the best classcial music album of 2004.

it's a shame that ARR hasn't won anything for Swades or Meenaxi.

Include 'Bose'.

But when has real quality output been recognised? There are so many instances of good acting, music, films, technical excellence going unrecognised since the time these awards were instituted. This year is no exception.

Jacky
13th July 2005, 06:37 PM
Yep but at least the solace factor could be that it had more themes than songs. Don't know the criterion for Best music by awards committee.
The list is endless like IR for Anjali and Thalpathi, ARR certainly deserved one for Dilse.
To be fair to VS, I must listen to that Album but I don't think it'll be better than Swades.
Just my gut feeling.

Hey guys sorry for the misinfo:it was tara as best actress for Hasina(kannada) and not ash as popularly expected.....

Sudhir mishra was the jury head......director vasanth was also jury member......

Best Tamil film: Navras by santhosh sivan.......

i think to be fair enuf, jury cannot give award to ARR evrytime isn't it??? but ARR's songs somehow or the other get awards...i think that's enuf.....

I watched Zee News where they live telecasted the awards announcement in between the news.

Yes its Mr. Sudhir Mishra, head of the jury gave explanation for each and every award their odd choices this time. The following is not in any order.

a) Saif Ali Khan : This is what everyone is expecting for. He told a best actor is not who just cries and makes his lips twists in dialogues (specifically). This time we have choosen Saif Ali Khan becoz it is a complex role who has portrayed it naturally. (Saif Ali Khan won Best Comedian Film fare award for Hum Tum & SRK best actor for VZ/Swades).

b) Tara: The media has taken wrongly as Ash(Rediff thane Maddy) and he explained abt Tara's role.

c) Best Supporting Actor: 92 year old man acting or in original. I dont remember. a brief explanation.

d) Best Supporting Actress: Sheela (He asked specifically the audience to clap hands for the supporting actor and actress).

e) Best Popular Film Award - Veer-Zaara(Hindi) and Autograph (Tamil)

While explaining he told we want to give only one film and considering the hindi as the major (north) and in south (major telugu and tamil, though they were 3 (ignored malayalam[/b])). This shocked me may be the majority of the jury is telugu based. remember how vikram got award last yr (1).

f) Best Costume designer: Usually we choose only for period films but this time no. I dont whom he gave this award.

g) Best Music Director: He announced Udit narayan (swades) and chitra without any explanation. Similarly for Best Music Direction Vidyasagar for the telugu film "Swarabishekam" (2).

h) Best choreographer: None other than parbhudeva...(back to news).

Suresh & alias! Meenaxi was in 2003 itself. Like me a layman to telugu songs, give a Ist check at raaga.com rating. ( SW - 4 stars (movie index only not even in VS list) & Swades 4 stars, Bose all 5 stars). Estimating the weightage of both Swades & Bose tracks, soulful singing, instrumental themes (shehnai, flute & bose orchestras arr certainly deserves national award when compared to VS! . I think the jury is very specific that they dont want to repeat the veterans for the awards or the majority of the jury is telugu.

Being an arden ARR fan its a Big disappointment  ! I dont know how A R R feels   . And this is not the first time in his career he is facing such disappointment.

May god & A R R fans give him sheer confidence for the upcoming albums to be commercially good and win more awards.

h3walrus & interz (rendu perum telugu vaaa)!!

VS! Fans Enjoy the merriment.

PS:
National Awards are to retain National Integrity

This is pure bogus national awards... swaarabhisekham was not at all appreciated and it was a big flop even though it happen to be K.Vishwanath movie. ARR defintely deserves for Bose (if not for Meenaxi since it was to be considered as 2003 release). And Saif Ali Khan .. why on the hell they would give it to Saif Ali Khan... Look at the original and compare with Billy Crystal and SAK was no way near to him. And I would think this time SRK deserves award for his excellent portrail in Swades. This is a big cheating and Sudhir Mishra should resign from the post along with the Jury members. And Anji ..special effects.. what a joke...

Congrats to all the awardees!! I was especially happy for Chithra and Pa.Vijay. These were atleast in expected lines right?

Regarding award being given to Saif, I think most of our mind sets have been stereo-typed - in the sense that we tend to have an opinion that only serious and sober roles are worth awards. Such seems to be the case for music as well - soft, sad, carnatic-based songs are favoured for awards. Come on! Acting is acting which includes all the 'nava rasam'. So why leave out comedy and light hearted roles? I am not sure about Saif's character potrayed in Hum Tum but saying that he doesn't deserve the award just because he did a comic role - sorry, can't vouch for that!

saif ali khan's award is an apology to Mr.Tiger Pataudi from central govt..........
as far as ARR is concerned, they will not give any more awards to him as it is a policy of committee not to give more than 4-5 awards to a single person in technical categories.......

listened to swarabhishekham songs- i dunno but they were no way near to swades or Bose......maybe that's bcos i have ARR's music always running in my blood :D .......

I definitely believe huge success got nothing to do with Award selection.

Even in Oscar awards, being a BO hit is a no guarantee for a Oscar.

Remember how Ismail Darbar, for his, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam edged out Taal for NA. Now, we all know..Taal sold second to none that year!

Is that true Maddy that ARR cannot get anymore national awards since he exceeded the list

Yday I was hearing Kisna (HHIPY 3 instrumentals esp flute & piano, MWCT), Swades (YDHT & Pal pal instrumental shehnai & flute) & Bose 20 tracks(All themes especially kadam orcha, desh ki mitti piano & jana gana mana) repeatedly till 1.30 am. I was almost in tears & unable to find any reason why it was rejected. This year even filmfares and other awards(IIFA) deliberately rejected these albums too. God! how ARR would have felt . I am sure its not just me (ARR fan) even an ordinary listener can experience similar feelings when compared to other albums.

Damn! Did the jury listened to the CD or from anyy 32 kbps mp3 sites? Are they really aware of all these instrumentals?.

Normal man, I am not upset about Rahman winning it that year(or anytime). If he didnt deserve it for Minsaara kanavu he probably deserved it for some other album that year. His work was consistently good around that time. Even this year Swades/Bose are easily one of the strongest contenders.

Bhavatharini winning it pretty much sealed it for me.That was the year there was a huge controversy over the awards and sveeral jury members resigned. There was a thread dedicated just to complain :-)

Wait, I thought National awards lost respect, when MGR received best actor award for "Rikshakaran" in 1972.
Congress did this thinking they are rewarding MGR for breaking away from DMK. Congress did not realize that they will soon become a small player with MGR's move...

Vijayr,

Its only the case of personal opinion about awards. every year there are some winners and some losers...
we always try to relate to something which we find the best to be awarded and crib over the awards given to some one else.
For instance The year 1997 saw some of great IR classics like 'Guru', Yaatra mozhi' and kaliyoonjalu' in malayalam and 'Devathai' and 'Kaathalukku mariyaadai' in Tamizh. I think That IR deserved an award for any of these movies easily over 'Minsara kanavu' ... But it just didnt happen.
You personally may not like Bhavadharini's 'Mayil pola' but The jury thought otherwise :) while i was saddened by the thought that IR didnt get an award for the film 'Bharathi' ...
The whole history of awards is like that, not only here but all over the world. and we not need not ponder over these things much.
Its only a couple of people may be 10's /100's who form a meager group of the total population here in india ... who accidentaly were given the oppurtunity of being in the jury. and we need not care what they think.
Same applies to ARR fans who come over here and crib over that ARR didnt get any award for BOSE, SWADES etc., You people enjoyed the music right ... then its well awarded. And Bose Got an excellent award from myself an HCIRF :) go enjoy reading my thread here

Totally against Bavatharani getting the award. I was expecting Chitra to get one for KKKK that year.

Guru was released in 1997, same year Misara Kanavu won the NA. No doudt MK had popular songs. But please not even remotely close to the type of much Guru had. I seriously doubt whether any of the jury members understood such a kind of music.

There were tons of other movies which were over looked for NA's. Kaadhal Oviyum (absolutely stunning music, lyrics, rendering by SPB, SJ).

Now I'm playing Devil's Advocate - NA for Karagaatakaran (if you can give one for Lagaan by saying that its music is both regional in character and popular in appeal, bringing out the ethos of Saurashtra region), why not this which totally brings out the folk culture of Tamil Nadu.

One thing is sure. You need to do a lot of lobbying.

Award controversies spring up each time - may be because the criteria is not clear or it is very difficult to set criteria for something like cinema...in other words, what are the rules to make a song `award-worthy'? (or a singer or a lyricist or a MD? How will you compare a Thamizh poem with a Bengali poem? If you compare the English translations of both, how sure are you it is not the translator's skills or imaginations? Can any individual in India appreciate all the languages equally so as to make a judgement on poem, script etc.)

Even if the panel manages to have a `measurement criteria or list or meter', how each one will be measured will again depend on the person who measures (individual juries) as there's no meter which can say this song is 9/10 or that is 8.89/10...Personal bias automatically come into picture (however much the jury is impartial, his/her `taste' will still rule as one's malligai is another's karuvAdu)

While awarding Bhavatharini or MGR is not acceptable to a set of people, there may be another set which vehemently support them...obviously, those among the juries will have similar personal bias and the max bias wins:-)

So the conclusion : Be happy for those who have got! VS, KSC, Pa.Vijay - three cheers!

(If you think someone else may deserve the award more, it's just your opinion based on taste...best wishes for next time)

Yesterday i saw 'naan Anaiyittaal' in KTV/SUN. Apart from melodramatic scenes MGR does well in love and other common scenes. i've started looking them in another perspective altogether. may be Rickshawkaran is good. Should watch it again to judge about it :)

rajasaranam, if you think I was terribly bothered that Bhava got the award then you are wrong. I just had a good laugh over it, that's all. You have given further examples to prove why these awards are'nt to be taken seriously anymore. And I dont. (IMO, Awards themselves are meaningless to a certain extent in arts) Like someone mentioned earlier MGR or Bhava getting an award might have to do more with lobbying or nepotism than the panel's own judgement. If the members of the jury really thought they deserved the award its another issue. But if they succumbed to political pressure/nepotism etc. then the awards lose all credence. Its like a rigged poll.

"You personally may not like Bhavadharini's 'Mayil pola' but The jury thought otherwise Smile"

NO ONE whom I came across, who is an objective listener of music and not biased, supported Bhava's award. Even some IR fans were stunned. Atleast in other cases(like MGR or Minsaara kanavu) the opinions are mixed.

I wonder what were the other nominations that year for best singer. The fact that Mayil Pola got nominated by itself is a miracle.

vijayr
14th July 2005, 11:36 PM
Atleast MGR was popular and had "acted" in many commercially succesful mainstream films. Same with Rahman and Minsaara kanavu's success.

But Bhava is'nt even a regular playback singer and doesnt sing for anyone other than IR now and then. The whole thing is a mystery. I can't think of a single reason other than bias/nepotism on the part of certain members of the panel.

vijayr
14th July 2005, 11:39 PM
rajasaranam, the reason why IR did'nt win in 97 or Rahman didnt win this year might also be due to some considerations as to how many times the same MD could win the award. IR had already gotten it 3 times. Plus there was some rumour or news that IR was declining further awards and award nominations.

rs, actually Rajini is potentially a great actor - IMHO, with better talents than Kamal who has relatively more limitations...Fortunate Kamal (or commercially unfortunate?)got (or chosen) good roles that brought out his `acting' skills while Rajini got limited opportunities (or he chose to stick to mass masAlA for monetary reasons...)...as an example, imagine MR making Dhalapathi with Kamal, it would have been horrible (the power that Rajini brings out when he shouts in the police parade in front of Jai Shankar Kamal can only dream of)...OTOH, Rajini could have phoo-phooed the Nayakan role of Kamal (jujubi)...

All said, I admire both of them equally (much like I admire MGR for his moral-preaching thru movies and Shivaji for his simmakkural / dialogue / facial expressions)...absolutely no bias / offense to any one...

Although Swarabishekham sounded pretty average to me I am happy that VS got an award, Congrats to him. VS's sense of melody, if not anything else, is commendable and he has had quite a rough path to the top without any patronage from any quarters. Also, the fact that a lost genre like semi-classicals has been recognized is another positive point.
I hope he doesnt accept too many Vijay films in the future though-just no scope for doing anything creative.

Looking at the bright side-atleast YSR or Bharadwaj didnt get it, so all is not lost :-)

Wow! Pretty interesting stuff here. Opinions from rajasaranam and app_engine were quite understandable. But regarding Bhavatharini's award, I felt that was quite justified (or am I saying this because I got carried away by the song's tune and music??). I know Bhava is an average singer and not too good with expressions and emotions while singing but still felt her rendering of 'Mayil Pola' was good.

kasi_sce, I am not quite sure about the 'dubbing' factor because I have heard that actors whose voice are dubbed are not eligible for national awards (infact even the on-line form states that). I have heard that Radha was rejected for the award (for Mudhal Mariyadhai) on this basis. But Shobana had won the National Award for 'Manichitrathaazhu' and I think her voice was dubbed in that movie.

Ravi_odiyur, just a mere good rendition of an ordinary song doesnt merit an award. How did Bhava deserve it over the other nominees? How was her rendition superior to say Chithra's in "enge enadhu kavidhai" that year, or 100 other songs that in my opinion were far better renditions? Even in the same Bharathy album, "ninnai charan adaidhen" by Bombay Jayashree was more challenging to render.

2)Velu Naicker's role in Nayakan will be jujubee, thoosu for Rajni

3)Thiyagarajan would have done a equally good job with Velu Naicker's role

I don't know what to say&am -ed

By the same count Rajni can only dream of the kind of raw energy Kamal bought to the scene where he hits out at the inspector(Tinnu Anand's dad in the movie)

I don't want to start a Kamal Vs Rajni war here but can't resist from making this post:There is a strong reason for Rajni being a SS&an equally strong reason why Kamal is called a great actor.Don't demean him by comparing with Thyagarajan.

In fact Mani is on record accepting the tremendous inputs Kamal gave to that movie(Nayakan).

Rajni might be a potentially great actor but an artiste is judged not on what he could do but what he has done.On that count Kamal beats Rajni hands down.

End digression.

Guys if you look back in 80s, Rajni was doing all character roles and Kamal was doing hero oriented action movies. So both are capable of doing both job.

If Kamal acted in Dhalapathi, it would have been a different but not Dhalapathi. (I find Satya character lot similar to Dhalapathi character)

Likewise if Rajni acted in Nayakan, it would have been different, but not nayakan.

what made both these movie great is not only just these two people, but an undisputed BGM by IR and a flawless direction by MR and very nice team work.

Agreed that he had potential which was tapped by KB/BR/SPM/Mahendran in the late 70s but Kamal is a much more versatile artiste/actor and is in a different league altogether. Rajni has very good screen presence/charisma/voice and that explains the "power" he sometimes seems to exude on screen. Not to be confused with acting.
BTW,I have always considered Dalapathi an extension(or rehash) of Nayagan done for Rajni.

You're right vijay about the `appAvi with Athiram' roles that Kamal excelled...nobody else could have ever matched...that's his speciality area...it's very appropriate that he bagged his NA's for moondRAm piRai (a flawless, controlled performance through out the film and extraordinary in the climax) and sAhara sangamam (no words to describe - recently I saw salangai oli on DVD, the scene in which he pichchu otharifys Shailaja -`this is kathak' etc- is brilliance of the highest degree)...

Compared to those roles, nAyakan was way below (very average) performance...probably demanded only that much.

As someone mentioned, the movie itself was phenomenal (story / direction / music / camera work / artwork everything was excellent) so much of goodies packed that I wanted to sit through the next show also (didn't do it because of the lousy `NEW' theatre in Palakkad, would've done it if it was in the college auditorium)...

Kamal is such a mess. all he cares in his movies is to kiss the heroine onscreen and lay her off screen!

Poor producer, suh a nice producer, with lots of hit movies!

Remember when kalai puli thaanu wrote on kumudham about how kamal ripped him!

Why don't you start a seperate thread for Kamal bashing where you can list out the names of the women he has supposedly laid (with proofs,if you have any)instead of coming up with the same comments everywhere. It's SICK.

"Poor producer":Have you read the details in all the websites or atleast cared to read njv's comment?Obviously No,otherwise you would have known that Kamal has got nothing to do with it.

Anyway, therre is no doubt that VS deserves such awards, Congrats :)

Raja for HeyRam, you must be kidding. HeyRam is way beyond what Indian movie can take it, so it is dis-qualified for over qualification. I watched Guru yesterday, just because everyone said the songs are great. To me Guru is another HeyRam. I envy mallus for now they have IR for some of their greatest movies. Shankar, VS deserves it much more than YSR, if not for Swarabishegham then for his past efforts in TFM. YSR, IMO, has long ways to go before he even deserves the local TN state award. For instance, Kaadhal- both the songs and BGM was better than 7GRC. Its also a shame that the movie didnt even get nominated. It got released at the end of 2004. I dont know if they are considering it for 2005 awards.

BTW,Iam also glad that Bharadwaj didnt win any NA for Autograph.

Surprised to see *you* posting such comments ! The songs were average..Musically, no great shakes...decent tunes that's about it.
7GRC's "ninaithu, ninaithu" is better than *any* song from kAdhal... The BG Score of kAdhal again was just about adequate (do you remember any portions where the score was good), while 7G had a good 5-6 pieces worth mentioning (the choral chant & the early morning sequence to mention a few...Pls listen to the OST of 7G).

7grc was better than Kadhal but certainly not a national award winning album.
The theme was recycled from his dad, one was a modified ARR song (Kan pesum), and another sprinkled with MJ's they don't care about us (vayathukku vanthom). It would've been a double whammy after saif winning the award. But when Anu malik can win a NA - YSR, DS.Prasad, and HJ can dream about winning one sometime in their career.

Do you think somebody can compose swades / bharathi kind of score for a movie like 7GRC ? Why don't we just compare apples with apples and oranges with oranges ?

If you are thinking only serious movies (music) deserve national award, Can you explain ARR getting it for Minsara Kanavu ? 7GRC is an average album. Kan pesum vaarthai a rehash of kuchchi kichchi raakamma. Kaadal-theme was much better and I liked "unakena iruppen" and "thottu thottu" better than ANY song from 7GRC. Ninaithu ninaithu paarthen- a tired-sounding mid-80s IR melody rendered in Shreya's fresh voice.

The re-recording in Kaadhal was memorable at several places and seamlessly merged with the movie. I didnt even know the name of the MD and had to look it up after I saw the movie.
The few passable pieces in 7GRC's BGM must have been Karthik Raja helping his brother. Anyways, I doubt that BGM is taken into account when awards are choosen for best MD.

"We are not talking about lifetime achievement awards...He shud've got it for Anbe Sivam ( the title song and some BG scores were awesome) and there are some good mallu movies which were worthy of a NA...Not swarabishekam."

Shankar, either way he should have got it for some album or the other in the past and he didnt get it. So I dont have any problems with him getting it now. Thats what I meant. With YSR I am yet to find a single album, past or present, that deserves a NA. No sympathies for him.

If it is of any consolation to YSR fans, my opinion is that Bharadwaj should be terribly embarassed to even express disappointment that he didnt get an award for Autograph. 7GRC is better than Autograph in most ways.

I think I mentioned this earlier too, that "kann pEsum vArthaigaL" is heavily inspired from "ennai kollai ittu pogira azhage vaa" from Jodi. This surprising find was presented to me by my better half, someone who was never into this sort of thing before! When 7GRC songs were popular, I was, naturally, singing this popular YSR number at home when out of the blue she said she has listened to my singing a similar song before. And then she presented the Jodi song!

Some of the KAdhal songs are indeed lovely. It also helped that the songs were part of a hit movie.

Award for ARR for Minsarakkanavu was indeed a joke..
Common, there should be some musical excellence to give an award for Music. A hit tune, doesnt necessarily mean that they are of quality..

Roja surely deserved an award.. But albums like Minsarakkanavu got teh award just because of senseless juries..

That means that the great Sankarabharanam, Sagarasangamam, Sindhu Bhairavi etc are of the same standard of Minsarakkanavu

It doesn't mean that... In a given year whichever movie is the best gets the award...You cannot compare songs from two eras and say this is better than that, etc...They don't have to be in the same standard...My only grouse is, in the same year a lesser movie gets the award...and it has been happening consistently.

nkv, I feel this comparison is like (as NagaS put it) comparing apples with oranges. Why are we stuck with the conventional view that only sober, classic-based, melodious, soft music is award material? Is not fast beat, folk, fusion and the like worthy for an award? I think most of us feel that Minsarakanavu is not worth an award because of the kind of music it had - fast and peppy.

I was in a way happy with the awards that year. They broke the conventional norms. Even Chithra's and SPB's songs were not the usual award-winning kinds but I would say still they were worth an award for the style of rendition.

Before we critize the award panel, let us first leap out of the 'conventional' mind-sets saying only such and such kinds are award-worthy. How many of us would be open-minded to accept a comedian or a villian for a 'Best Actor' national award?? Why? Are these kinds not part of acting? Give it a thought!

Interesting discussions (atleast few weeks earlier).
Congrats to VS, I haven't listened to"swarabhishekam" songs, despite mixed opinions from other Dfers here on this album, I feel he was a better choice compared to YSR, he definitely deserved for "Anbe Sivam" ( had good BGM also).

YSR's 7GRC was just above average , I couldn't sit thro' watching the movie beyond 30 minutes ( so I don't know how good was the BGM), his "kaadhal konden" ( though few songs were lifts, yet BG score was one of best ) was better than 7GRC ,

as per Indian national awards regulations/eligibility etc ( see link http://mib.nic.in/dff/51nfawardregul.htm) Best MD award is supposed to be for best music direction ( which includes songs and BG score), but looks like the jury ever even cocentrate on BG score, (IR should have won many many awards if the jury members went by those regulations is another point.)

YSR has a long way to get there especially with the kind of music he produces ( despite giving chart busters and commercially successful music in the last 2 -3 years), KR ( a more talented MD who is not as hardworking as his dad or his brother I think) may win a NA earlier if he concentrates more on songs ( Kudaikkul mazhai had exceptional BG score, and most of the YSR movies whereever he took care of BGM)
Comparision of "7GRC" with "Kaadhal", "kaadhal" had few good songs and definitely a very good BG score, considering Sridhar Joshua's maiden effort , personally " kaadhal" had some original music, as opposed to YSR 's rehashed songs and inspired BG score in " 7gRc", movie itself was way better than the stupid 7GRC ( splendid performance by every small or big characters in Kadhal)

Somebody mentioned about " hamsalekha" winning NA in 1997, it was probably either 1995 or 1996, and definitely deserved for the movie "Gaanayogi Panchakshari Gawayi", he belongs to the league of VS with heavy influence of IR in his early years
It was interesting reading "App_engine"'s comparision of Kamal and Rajini in "Nayakan and Dhalapathi" and vice versa, but Rajini in "Nayagan" I just can't imagine, especially "saranya-kamal" initial intro sequences, ( Rajini failed miserably in Dhalapathi with those Bhanupriya related sequences, IR was the big savviour in most of the places wherever Rajini was average) " Kamal-Karthika" sequences and definitely in "later year Velunayakkar" in Prison etc ( despite Rajini doing some excellent portrayals like the senior Rajini in Muthu etc)
Rajini is talented no doubt, but he is not versatile, and definitely misses the naunces and subtelities in enacting certain characters unlike Kamal and perhaps no one in entire Indian cinema has this extra ordinary talent of Kamal except probably"Naseeruddin shah" (IMHO) not even Mohanlal, Mammotti and others despite being great actors.
The only MR movie I have watched only once is "Dhalapathi" (being an ardent fan of MR) right when the movie was released I felt it was just an extended version of "nayagan" layered over friendship etc even box office vise probably it was not the greatest hit of Rajini despite being MR-IR-RK combo ( If I am not wrong, another crap of Rajini "manidhan" did better than this I think)
Rajini at best be compared to BigB for his screen presence definitely never comparable to Kamal IMO.

Who among these jury members is the singer who is supposed to have scuttled YSR's chances?
Initially, I thought it could be SPB, who might have influenced the award for his aaptha mithrudu K.Vishwanath's movie. But he is not even in this list :-)
That aside, SPB had an absolute stunner "Okka Kshanam" in Swarabhishekam - he should have got the NA in place of Udit. ( I thought may be SPB was in jury so he couldnt have got it but now it seems really unjust)

Personally, Swarabhishekam was not earth-shaking - except that it was semi-semi-classical(surely, if Shankarabharanam is semi-classical, Swarabhishekam cant be - my first impression of the album was "IS this really VS, it could easily have been one of MMKeeravani's "keep-to-the-middle-scale" efforts?").
Swarabhishekam is too light to be called Semi-classical and in that genre, it isn't earth-shaking - even in Telugu, there was Anand, a better movie with better songs(though lousy BGM). Considering that Autograph missed narrowly, I would say Anand could have won hands down for sheer quality of music.

Looks like Nagesh Kukunoor might have scuttled Anand's chances both for Best Telugu Movie and music because the director of Anand, Sekhar Kammula has taken over the "king among small film-makers from hyderabad" :-)
