Raga based songs in 2005

By RR

2005 was a mixed baggage as far as raga based songs were concerened. MD's continued to churn out songs in routine ragas, but there were attempts at rare ragas too (Notable are Vidyasagar's Rasikapriya and Surya/sallapam that went on to become big hits).

Here's a list of some raga based songs (with strong classical flavour - not just based on scale) that I liked in 2005.

Oh sukumaari (Anniyan): http://www.musicindiaonline.com/l/26/s/movie_name.7209/ (Song 5) - Aarabhi with some Sama thrown in

un peyarennada (Feb 14): http://www.musicindiaonline.com/l/26/s/movie_name.7923/ (last song) - Starts like sindhu bairavi but ends in Thodi

konja neram (Chandramukhi): http://www.musicindiaonline.com/l/26/s/movie_name.7545/ (song 5) - Melodious song in abhogi (with occassional sri ranjani touches)

raa raa (Chandramukhi): http://www.musicindiaonline.com/l/26/s/movie_name.7545/ (last song) - Beautiful song in Surya/sallaapam (with Hindolam for happy parts)

ding dong (Ji): http://www.musicindiaonline.com/l/26/s/movie_name.7225/ (first song) - Brilliant attempt at Rasikapriya

ennai ketkum (Kasturi maan): http://www.musicindiaonline.com/l/26/s/movie_name.8130/ (first song) - In simmendra madhyamam (though not IR's best)

kanda naal mudhalaai (Kanda naal mudhal): http://www.musicindiaonline.com/l/26/s/movie_name.8040/ (Song 2) - A kind of remix of the popular carnatic song in Mathuvanti.

moolai thirugum (Kanaa kanden): http://www.musicindiaonline.com/l/26/s/movie_name.7860/ (Song 4) - Mainly suddha saveri (with kanakangi touches)

noothanaa (Karka kasadara): http://www.musicindiaonline.com/l/26/s/movie_name.7424/ (last song) - In Gambira naattai

kaatril varum (Oru naal oru kanavu): http://www.musicindiaonline.com/l/26/s/movie_name.7940/ (song 3) - In Kalyani. This movie had a good Keeravani (khajuraho) too.

manithan solgindra (Raam): http://www.musicindiaonline.com/l/26/s/movie_name.7367/ (song 3) - A ragamalika with Mukhari and sindhu bairavi

suppose ennai (Sukhran): http://www.musicindiaonline.com/l/26/s/movie_name.7679/ (song 3) - A fun song based on Hamsadhwani

I'm sure I missed out some good ones. Pls fill in.

Oh sukumaari (Anniyan):
http://www.musicindiaonline.com/l/26/s/movie_name.7209/

(Song 5) - Aarabhi with some Sama thrown in

>>>> This song has elements from three ragas: Aarahi,
Sama, and Shuddha Saveri.

un peyarennada (Feb 14):
http://www.musicindiaonline.com/l/26/s/movie_name.7923/
(last song) -
Starts like sindhu bairavi but ends in Thodi

>>>> This song is essentially based on sindhu
bhairavi. There is a suggestion of the thodi-ish "sa
ri ga" in one place, but it can almost be ignored as a
passing tune, considering that most of the song
follows the sindhu bhairavai scale. Actually,
classical sindhu bhairavi has a lot of foreign notes
in
carnatic music, as compared to the hindustani parent
raga. More interestingly, this song follows mostly the
"pure" version of hindustani origin.

raa raa (Chandramukhi):
http://www.musicindiaonline.com/l/26/s/movie_name.7545/
(last song) - Beautiful song in Surya/sallaapam (with
Hindolam for happy parts)

>>>> This raga is NOT surya. I think the confusion is
in the interpretation of where you think the "Sa" is.

The starting of the song is actually "Ni Sa Ga", while
you seem to interpret it as "Ga Ma Dha". I would
classify this raga into the pentatonic scale "sa ga ma
pa ni sa" notes of gowrimanohari as the parent scale.
I am not sure if there is a known classical raga for
this scale, but this raga has been used by film
musicians. For instance, Ilayaraja's "vellai nilaa
irandum vellai nilaa" follows the same raga.

kanda naal mudhalaai (Kanda naal mudhal):
http://www.musicindiaonline.com/l/26/s/movie_name.8040/
(Song 2) - A kind of remix of the popular carnatic
song in Mathuvanti.

>>>> This is a good representative of raga madhuvanti
in film, after several other attempts that we have
seen in the past.

moolai thirugum (Kanaa kanden):
http://www.musicindiaonline.com/l/26/s/movie_name.7860/
(Song 4) - Mainly suddha saveri (with kanakangi
touches)

>>>> The scale is shuddha saveri. I think the foreign
touches are part of every film song, and are best
ignored.

>>>> I would add this one:

>>>>> ennai konja konja vaa (Aathi): - this song is
based on a hindustani raga "Mian Ki Malhar" (same
raga as the hindi song "bOlErE papi harA" - Vani
Jayaram), a good attempt at this raga, and a very nice
delivery by the singers..

Hi RR, you have missed another grossly overlooked melody in "Naattai" "Iyengar veettu azhage" from Anniyan by our one Carnatic music film wonder Harris :)

Thats right! The film Oru Naal Oru Kanavu also had the song Konjam Thira which is based on raga Sahana and Yenna Paatu Vaendum Unakku which also popularized the raga Hamsadwani. Can someone tell me what ragams are present in the song Kummiyadi in the film Chellamae. I was told by a friend that Vellaikaaramuththam is primarily Abheri. I am also interested to know what ragam is Kodi Kodi Minnalgal from Jayam( i guess this is a 2004 film, or am i wrong?).

Hello sai ram,

Kummiyadi in chellame sounds like kaapi (basically kharaharapriya scale). Nice tune, but not a decisive piece in a raga that you can learn through this song.

Kodi Kodi - again sounds a lot like kaapi.

One more nice song with a good raga base is "poo vaasam purappadum penne" in anbe sivam. This song is based on
a hindustani ragam called "shuddha saarang".

Dear Suresh, iruvar vazhum sounded like keeravani. I would have to listen to it another time to confirm.

I like the song "Poo Vaasam..." from anbe sivam. Very melodious. Its sung by Madhu balaksrishnan & Sadhana Sargam...correct?

"Ding Dong..." also instantly caught my attention.

"Kaatril Varum" song is liked by all in my house.

thanks,

Is the song "poove vaai pesum podhu" from 12B based on some raga ?
