View Full Version : Kannadasan's Song Line in English

yezhaithamizhan

அனைவருக்கும் வணக்கம்.

I need a motivating, uplifting old Tamil song line preferably of Kannadasan..but Vaali ok too, but this is important...translated in English.

I need this to post in my work area in big print.

For example...the whole songs "Dharumam Thalai kaakkum" and "Adho Andha Paravai Pola..." have a lot of message (கருத்துக்கள்) in them.

Could someone please suggest a nice line translated in good English from these songs or any other old Tamil songs?

மிக்க நன்றி.

we should live like those birds flying in the sky
we should live like these waves dancing by the shore
united in the sky, united in the shore
we should sing in unison asking for our rights

the wind does not ignore us saying we are slaves
neither does the seawater cause blisters for we are slaves
time does not go by, passing people like us
love, devotion, motherhood all have not abandoned us
united in the sky, united in the shore
we should sing in unison for our rights

we were not born without a cradling mother
neither are we speaking without a common language
we cannot live without the feeling of hunger
and when we leave, we do not just go astray
united in the sky, united in the shore
we should sing in unison for our rights

for millons to live together, we need freedom
for the country to prosper like a temple, we need freedom
to sing and dance without fear, we need freedom
wherever there is slavery, there need to be freedom
united in the sky, united in the shore
we should sing in unison for our rights

Can you do it for 'Unnai ARinthaal'? :)

know thyself ... if you realise yourself
you can survive the world
whether you rise high or fall deep
you can live with your head held high

people who place grace above all
aren't they likened to the gracious deer?
those who realise themselves and show the world
don't they get recognised as a worthy leader?

people who choose to live the righteous way
can't they be considered godly in their own way?
knowing the needs of the needy and being generous in deed
doesn't that make one a child of the almighty?

when you walk among the famed and mighty
you deseve to be honoured rightly
being an untarnished gem that you are
all should shower praises upon you

The breeze which flows in the screw pine flower collides on me
The fragance of the flower puts up stages
It speaks signals like woman
Oh its Delight ...

Is the curved arched path, the lady's adorable long hair ?
Is the dizzy going flood, a shy sparring of an adolescent ?
The parrot is searching for honey fruits in the banyan branch.
What melody is the beloved Cuckoo singing without lyrics ?
Forests and mountains are artistic works of Lord ..

Beautiful princess is passing as clouds..
She is trying to cover the mountain with saree with border ..
Why did the God create some hearts as vale ?
I Am searching him to give him a degree ? Where is that hero ?
The scenery of hill is God's domain..

The youthful heart which comes to the hill has only heavenly imaginations..
The hoar breeze which stirs the lips , is the poetry of Kamban
The gentle wind blown from the stream shows the paradise
The flood which flows within me, carries me somewhere
Unforgettable !! I will never forget this marvellous scenery ..!!

Rami,

First of all accept my CONGRATS  for trying out such difficult translations.

Poetry translation IS EXTREMELY tough, which should take care to savour, both the richness of original language and the

flavour of language to which its translated.

Youve used exquisite words, richness in vocabulary is strewn everywhere. Good show. Keep trying more.

However, my humble suggestion is....

Flavour can be maintained more by TRANSLATING THE CRUX than translating literally :?

IF i translate some tommorrow, WHEN I translate one, I want ur honest comment too :)

As usual I am honest enough, SORRY if I over did it.

I still maintain UR RICHNESS IN LANGUAGE is BEYOND words of praise :).

Definitely a Goodshow

Lets all try TRANSLATING more songs.

kewl rami,

u can try doing 2 versions, ONE FOR THE MEANING (CRUX) and other for comparisons. (let ppl enjoy what they want)

For these sheer reasons songs like,
'ATHIKKAI KAAI KAAI' etc would not do justice even if we translate :(

Hi all!

Here is my rough transliteration for this song!

( I insist, it is NOT TRANSLATION BUT TRANSLITERATION... )

I believe in transliteration than translation.

Hope its not killing the fervour of kannadasan or the language of english itself

All of your esteemed suggestions, comments, criticisms to amend would be appreciated.

I know that this isnt the appropriate thread for this, but still cant resist posting it here. It is one of the numerous occasions kannadasan has been inspired by literature that existed before him, but it is a rarity to find him seeking inspiration from english literature.

Shakespeare wrote,
"Sleep dwell upon thine eyes,
peace in thy breast!
Would I were sleep and peace,
so sweet to rest!"
- Rome and Juliet (Act 2, Scene 2)

The above verse gets beautifully translated, if not, given a beauty of its own, when kaviyarasar rewrites it in tamil.
'தூக்கம் உன் கண்களைத் தழுவட்டுமே
அமைதியும் உன் நெஞ்சில் நிரவட்டுமே - அந்தத்
தூக்கமும் அமைதியும நானானால் - உன்னைத்
தொடர்ந்திருப்பேன் என்றும் துண்யிருப்பேன்'
