Finally at least one Tamil Film album for this year-2004 has been released... [Remember Virumaandi album was released last year and 'Pothuraju' a dubbed version of virumaandi in telugu and also 'shivashankar' in telugu were released this year] which proves that our King is at it again, with great Folk compositions that are going to be chartbusters in the coming days.

The album contains 7 songs in all. The details are as follows

1.Enna petha aatha - singer: Ilayaraja, Lyric: Ilayaraja
A fast paced folk number praising 'mookambigai'. The song reminds of some old IR composition and the recent KR number 'enga poi solluvaen' fro the movie ' kudaikul mazhai'. May be the tempo is similar but a very good song indeed.
2. Kaattu kili - singers: karthick, bavatharini lyric: vaali
Awesome melody based on folk music. This song is the one which will make us feel why there arent any other composer in this world to make us feel soothing when we listen to a song. Out of the world composition...
3.Otha rooba - singers: tippu, Malathi lyric: Muthulingam
Well you should have guessed it right from the choice of singers. This is a typical karakaattam song that we had been listening for years from IR. Lets move on to the next song...
4.Saada maada - singers: Vijay yesudas, Manjari Lyric: pazhani bharathi
This song is a also a scintillating melody with great interludes and preludes which will make us flow along the music, listen to get a feel of it.
5.Enga ooru laila- singers: Tippu, Manjari Lyric: Kamakodiyaan
Hmmm the song starts of with prelude making us to expect pathos with heavy percussions. Definitely the violin made me think that, but Raja from whom we have to expect the unexpected gives a dance number. The interludes and the tune are all reminding us the glorious Eighties when IR was at his composing best. Here again we can witness how much energy is left in him.
6.Kotti Vacha – Singer: Dr. Lavanya Lyric: Mu.Mehtha
This is the pathos, which I was expecting, and here comes Raja with heart moving rendition ohhh it made me cry at the first hearing with apt lyric and music. The play of flute and tabla, listening to this song right now as iam typing my fingers are shaking the choice of singer is also moving…. her voice has got that old chithra feel. The title credit shows only one singer but iam able to listen to two singers voice overlapping … technology hmmm. This song will be there in my IR sad songs collection forever henceforth…
7.Thanthanathom – Singers:Mano, Kovai Kamala, Dr.krudaya.C.Punniya, Dr. Muthu sella kumar
A standard villu paatu telling the story of a shiva bhaktans love Story. Not much in this…

After first listening my pick of the album in their rankings are
1.Kotti Vacha muthae
2.Kaatu kili
3.Saada maada
4.Enga ooru laila
5.Enna petha
6.Otha rooba
7.Thanthanathom

The orders may change after a few listening but 'Kotti vacha muthae' will remain on top forever for me…

Chartbuster? Havent seen a chartbuster from IR in the past few years.

Oldposts
26th December 2004, 08:59 AM
Guess Me,

then it is very obvious you are totally oblivious as of what a chartbuster is afterall.

I think IR has done something fresh and it will suit the movie well.

There is nothing new in the songs every song will remain you some of his 80's composition but it is pleasant to hear. Somehow i feel "Virumandi" was much better folk album when we think about freshness from IR. Let me give it more hearings and decide.

Okay cm. Please define a chartbuster.

'Elangatru' from Pithamagan is IRs best song in years. Also malayalam movie 'Manasinakkare' has some great songs.

Oldposts

These are very very far from chartbusters or fresh. These are the same kinda songs we saw in the 80's.there are 2-3 songs in the album which are nice to listen to for awhile but they arent gonna shake the ground or n e thing.

Might become popular in the villages, songs are good but there is nothing new like on rahmans songs.

My rate: 3/6

Oldposts

Yet another reason as to why IR should stop accepting the same old village movies. Next what, Villupaatukaari? Add another one to IR's long uninspired albums list.

1) All songs more or less sound the same ..(just the tune is different). Very rarely the so called 'new sound' is created. Only an attempt to create new music.
2) All the dance beats are not imported from America or the West (especially in the kind of movie like karagAttakAri, dont know whether to dance to hiphop is possible with a karagam on your head :)) . It is the same beats used in temple festivals. Those village musicians should be able to perform it without much trouble. The difference is only in the quality of the tune.
3) Dont expect a hit out of every IR release. This is not guaranteed. Consistency in creativity is only to some extent. Patience is a virtue :-)

'Sadamaada Pechukellaam' IMO stands out in this album. But in the end it's just a new take on the Mohanam based folk song; he has already done plenty folk songs in this raagam in the 80s and 90s: ex., 'Pottu Vatcha Kiliye' (Poovarasan), 'Puthusaa Oru Paattedhu' (Udan Pirappu), 'Janapadha Ammodu' (Usire-- Kannada), 'Kuthu Kuthu Kummaanguthu' (En Mana Vaanil), 'Inimela Nalla Neramthaan' (Ponmana Selvan) just a few that come to mind.

'Kotti Vatcha' is just plain uninspired (reminiscent of 'Oomai Megame' of Kairaasikaran fame minus the freshness) The singer Lavanya gives a mere 'book-reading' zombie rendition.

'Enga Ooru Laila Laila' is just another Mayamaalavagowla-based song that gives the sensation of deja-vu; it's okay, no more, no less.

'Kaattukili' has some catchiness in it, with a few interesting instrumental effects scattered throughout the song. I'd rank this song second-best in the album.

'Otha Rooba' sounded more melodious than I had expected, but the melody followed a predictable pattern. 'Enna Petha Aatha' was equally predictable; I see that IR has given a few Subhapanthuvaraali touches to the song.

'Thanthanathom' I haven't heard as of yet, so can't comment on it.

All in all, IR has given the very same genre of music heard in the songs in 'Karagattakari' ten, even twenty years ago. I can see it would probably be unfair to expect usage of fancy raagams like Swarnangi, Vijayasri or Pramodhini for a village-based story. But nevertheless, it seems that IR is chewing the chewed with the hackneyed Mohanam, Mayamaalavagowla and Sindhu Bhairavi raagams as well as tabla cum flute orchestration (with a dash of violin and/or naadhaswaram usage).

Now, if you guys wish to call the score chartbusting, if you sincerely feel that these songs are excellent, that's fine.

Regards,
purv

Who are Lavanya and Manjari - are they introduced by IR in this album?

I liked 3 songs - Sadamaada, Enga ooru laila and Kattukkili. Enna petha tune resembles Entha ooru kuyilanalum (a Karthik film) and Kotti vacha starting is like Onna vida from Virumandi. Anybody felt so?

to be precise it was exactly 28 years back, that people started forgetting the spelling for chartbuster, for every single Album of IR was becoming a chartbuster and there was no more need to say them as chartbusters :-)

Dr. Lavanya sang for YSR in thuLLuvatho iLamai and another movie (7/g ?) ... Manjari sang a duet with Unni krish in "Niranja manasu"

I don't want to argue if the songs are chartbusters or something, But I liked all of them, esp., Saadamaada and Kotti vechcha ...

"Ennaip peththa aaththaa" is also a good song - I liked it more for IR's simple and practical thoughts as lyrics - "aNdam senju maNNuruNdaiyaakki unakkum, enakkum idam koduththaa mookaambaa" and "Computer kaalaamaachchu, kaasu niRaya saernthu pochchu, kavalaimattum kuRaiyalaiyae moogaamaa"

Well Mr. Sharath. All you posted here is a list of your favourites albums. To know if it is a chart buster, you must compare it to songs from the movies which released simultaneously with the ones you posted. And you will understand some of the songs which released simultaneously have outdone some of the movies you have in your list.

"to be precise it was exactly 28 years back, that people started forgetting the spelling for chartbuster, for every single Album of IR was becoming a chartbuster and there was no more need to say them as chartbusters :-)"

No rajasaranam, the idea of chartbusters came up precisely 12 years back with the release of ARR's Roja, an album, to whichever language it was dubbed, topped the charts for a long long time - a feat which the "Maestro" hasn't acheived in the past 28 years.

But 'Roja' never featured anywhere near to 'Devar Magan' on the charts for the year 1992, in its original language. Devar magan featured no.1 for 22 weeks continuosly while Roja featured no.1 for 10 weeks in 'Cibaca Top Ten' songs program in Radio 'Vividhbharthi' which was the one and only charting program available then :-)

dudes ..
RAJAs' all new malayalam album 'PONMUDIPUZHAYORATHU' has been released. As usual its a gem of an album but 2 songs really touched my hearts strings. After listening to them ive come to the conclusion that Raja should stop composing music to the current tamil films. His class and knowledge should not go waste,he should not stoop low to compose music to the trash you get in the name of tamil films these days.I pity all the directors who switched from raja including mani ratnam to suresh krissna.I cant understand what on earth makes them believe that the music they churn out is better than the stuff they got from Isaignani ...poor fellas. When did senior heroes like satyaraj, prabhu or vijayakanth last sing a proper hit song, back in 1992?? just see satyaraj and a skinny whore singing UMMA UMMA or something like that and throw up till your guts burst..yuck

S.Janaki won a National Award for her Inji Iduppazhagi in Thevar Magan.

Thevar Magan is a classic.. while Roja, though may be a good film.. Rahman seems shamelessly copied even in his first film (Song: Pudhu Vellai Mazhai from a Song in a Yanni Album).

That shows the class he has. Why compare earth and heaven?

Can we have some good reviews on Karagattakari rather than bringing outsiders like Rahman relative to this thread?

Sharath,

Only a small portion of Puthu vellai mazhai sounds like Yanni's song. The rest is original. And I know you know it very well and posted it just for bashing.

Good examples for shameless lift are "My Favourite Things" from Sound of Music, "Flash Dance" and "Lady in Black" all by IR.

any idea who is directing this movie "Karagattakari" or who the stars are ?

Oldposts
26th December 2004, 09:00 AM
Guys

We have two world class music directors, at different periods.

The reason why ARR is

is the 1 scoring for LOTR
is the 1 composed Dance for Vanesa Mae
1 beaten Madonna & Britney's audio sales
is the 1 in the top 10 list in UK

is because of the period in which he played music. Now a days any one who score music in India reaches out international audiance very easily. In 1972, remember tamil people used to listen to RDBurman and he turned them towards his music.

Both ARR and IR are the best that Tamil industry ever produced. Just because IR is not doing much now doesnt mean that he is not good. If you really see what ARR has given in the last two years, its really nothing compared to Roja/Mudhalvan/Indian/Kadhalan/Gentlemen. The fact is the pace of music is changing and now its time for Vidyasagar and Dhinna (specifically Umma Umma and Manmadharasa type songs)

Like someone else posted in this article, it is better if IR and ARR does something else than working for these low grade directors.

Also, knowing whats going on with Mumbai Express, I can assure you that you have some surprises, specially if you are used to listen to Hindi songs!

Normally all music directors will give good music in their first film. But it is difficult to give continuous hits. ARR also failed miserably in recent movies. When compared to ARR IR given so many melodies which will last long.

this movie being Karagaatakari, raja has come up with exactly what was required.the plus point is that the movies theme has taken him back in time,to the glorious 80s when he was in full swing and his style of music was the standard of south in dian industry.when deva came to the scene he composed exact repilcas of Rajas songs(i mean instrumentation and style..not quality)like the songs in Annamalai and Baasha and later switched to GV Prakash and Udit Narayan when god favoured ARR.Whatever people I m enjoying Karagaatakari to the hilt, tippus sounds reminds of malaysia vasudevan at times, only fly in the ointment is Bavathas voice ,its so immature after all these years,i believe her voice denied Raja of many potential hits like the songs from Time...hail Raasayya
