Dhanush reprises Chiranjeevi now

Dhanush forever had a fixation with superstar Rajini. He has used his movie titles and had danced to the remix of his songs. But now he has found a new idol in megastar Chiranjeevi. He is currently shooting for 'Padikkadhavan' and the film will have a remix of a Chiranjeevi song, 'Ra Ra Chilikamma' from the movie 'Choodalani Undi'. Most of the shooting of the film has been completed with only a song remaining to be canned. Another song from the film has also been shot in Switzerland.

'Padikkadhavan' has music scored by Mani Sharma. The composer was behind the original song as well. Another Tamil song from the movie 'Badrakali', has also been remixed for 'Padikkadhavan'. Dhanush and Tamannaah are in the lead roles and Suraaj is directing the flick.

The shooting of the film is expected to be wrapped up in a week and following this the film will be releasing in January.

[tscii:994d7a34af]Vivek-Dhanush rock in Padikkadhavan

Keeping in line with his style of mixing action with high doses of comedy, Suraj has made Padikkadhavan (also referred to as Padikkathavan) a laugh riot in which Vivek and Dhanush team up for the first time. Like his previous ventures Thalainagaram and Marudhamalai, Padikkadhavan will have loads of laughter in the first half and plenty of action in the second half. This ace director is very keen on giving maximum entertainment to his audience.

Apart from comedy scenes involving Dhanush and Vivek plus good action sequences, Tamannaah will be a big crowd puller. Two songs shot in Switzerland featuring Dhanush and Tamannaah will definitely prove to be the film’s highlights according to its director.

Padikkadhavan also stars veteran actors Prathap Pothan, Sayaji Shinde and Suman.

'Padikkadhavan' raising expectations...

It is known news that the film 'Padikkadhavan' is gearing up for hitting the screens and most importantly it has caught attention since the senior comedian Vivek and the action star Dhanush are coming together for the first time. This is being directed by Suraj and like his regular formula, it is said that the first half is completely loaded with humor while the second half goes about with loads of action. The highlight of this venture is the presence of the milk white beauty Tamannah as the heroine.

Why Padikathavan was not publicized?

Sun Pictures has acquired the Dhanush starrer Padikathavan! A unit of Sun TV Network, Sun Pictures, forayed into the film industry in a big way with the massive success of Kadhalil Vizhunden. The film went on to become a huge hit, thanks to the publicity created by the Sun TV.

Padikathavan, which was produced by Vijaya Productions, was acquired by Sun Pictures after discussions proved to be fruitful to both the parties. Insiders, however, say that it was decided well before to handover the rights to Sun Pictures and it was due to this the producers did not spend much on the promos. With Sun Pictures taking over Padikathavan, it is now assured that it will do all it can to promote the film, say our sources.

Padikathavan for Pongal?

The Dhanush starrer 'Padikathavan' may be released this Pongal. Featuring Tamanna alongside Dhanush, 'Padikathavan' is touted to be a racy commercial entertainer with loads of comedy.

Directed by Suraj, who had rendered a hit in 'Maruthamalai', Padikathavan has Vivek playing a comedy role with Dhanush, while Suman plays the baddie.

Suraj makes sure that comedy plays a vital role in his films. 'Padikathavan' too would be the same. Vivek as Alert Arumugam Ranga would be lapped up by the audience, say sources close to the director.

Mani Sharma's music is another major highlight of the film.

The film has had the honor of being lapped up by Sun Pictures who do a tremendous job when it comes to marketing and distribution. Moreover, the recently released trailer is crisp and has all the makings of attracting audiences.

this is what happens in his (dhanush) movies ..in the beginning dhanush gets scolded by parents and then after the break he does good heroic things and wins sympathy...

...regarding vijay Vijays movies havent been stereotyped always. I would like him to do different movies too. He needs to change too. Theatre audience are very clever and knows what they want. The lead actors and actresses should try to choose scripts that developes their acting careers.

Unlike many actors, I think Dhanush has a strong backing in Industry.. At least for another 10 years he would be in in the industry for sure, he can choose some challenging & different scripts which would make him a good actor in the long run..

'Padikathavan' censored

The much-awaited Dhanush starrer 'Padikathavan', directed by Suraj and presented by Sun Pictures, was censored in Chennai on Monday evening.

A commercial entertainer, the movie features Tamanna playing Dhanush's ladylove. Vivek plays a prominent role. Suraj, who directed films like 'Maruthamalai' before, is confident that 'Padikathavan' would make it big.

'It is a breezy entertainer with Dhanush at his best. The encounter between Tamanna and Dhanush will bring the roof down. Vivek's comical role is another major highlight of the movie, says Suraj.

The movie was censored on Monday for a Pongal release. Impressed with the movie, the censor officials reportedly handed over an 'U' certificate for the entertainer.

Padikkathavan for Pongal

Padikathavan, a rollicking comedy by director Sooraj, is all set for Pongal release. The Dhanush-Tamanna starrer has Vivek in a main role. The movie is expected to be a full fledged entertainer with the focus on non stop comedy.

Vivek and Dhanush have said to be competing with each other in making the audience laugh while Tamanna adds the glamour quotient to the film.

The story, in which the villain doesn't collide with the hero till the end, has many interesting twists and turns and thus ensuring exciting movie to watch. Atul Kulkarni acts in a Tamil film after a very long time.

Since the movie is set to clash with Vijay's Villu, which also is expected to hit the halls on Pongal day, the producers are leaving no stone unturned when it comes to marketing. The movie, according to the sources, will be marketed in a big way.

Music director Mani Sharma has come out with a peppy music track that could go well with Dhanush brand entertainer.

Padikkathavan's hidden pearl

With almost all the Pongal releases having been announced now, expectations seems to be mounting day by day. It is said that the Dhanush-Tamannah starrer Padikkathavan is woven around an illiterate youth who emerges a business magnet with adept application of his grey-matter.

The most guarded secret, however, is that Dhanush appears as a dwarf man in just one scene in the same lines of Kamal for Apoorva Sagodharargal. We have no exact duration of the scene, however, all we could promise you, based on the classified insider information is that the parts have turned out to be hilarious.

Directed by Suraj, Padikkathavan is scored by Mani Sharma. The audio launch of this movie is slated to be held today. Viewers of Sun TV can get to see the live telecast of this event from 7 pm onwards.

‘My looks are my strength’
Ahead of the release of Padikathavan on Pongal, Dhanush talks to Chennai Times about his film and life
SREEDHAR PILLAI Times News Network

Dhanush is on the verge of a hattrick of hits at the box-office. After the super hits Polladhavan and Yaaradi Nee Mohini, his Padikathavan is releasing this Pongal. The film is said to be a fun-laced masala comedy caper directed by Suraaj. Now, Dhanush’s Padikathavan has been pitted against Vijay’s Villu, leading to a classic confrontation at the box-office.
Sitting on the balcony of his 10th floor apartment that overlooks the sea, Dhanush says, “I have come a long way from my early days of struggle. I’ve tasted success and failure. All I want to do now is good films that work at the boxoffice. Padikathavan has all the essential ingredients to make it a racy entertainer.” The actor is confident that the film will work as it has been tailor-made for him.
Says Dhanush, “Suraaj gave me three story lines before I picked Padikathavan as it suits my on-screen image. I play the role of Rocky, a loafer who is a major embarrassment to his family. He is a 10th standard failure while the other members of his family are well placed. The film is about his struggle to come up in life.” Dhanush agrees that there is nothing new in the storyline, and feels it is the way a director packages the movie that gives the film its novelty. On the element of comedy in the film, he says, “The first half is funny and in the second half, Vivek, as Assault Arumugham, takes over and makes it a riot. There is no crass humour in the film.”
In Tamil cinema, each star has a particular image and it is good to work within these confines, feels the star. About the songs in Padikathavan, Dhanush says, “Mani Sharma’s music is peppy and youthful. Today, dappankuthu songs are an added attraction. Do you know that today, upmarket night clubs in Chennai play more dappankuthu Kollywood numbers than English songs?”
Dhanush confesses that his skinny, ordinary looks have become his calling card at the boxoffice. “When I was in school, I used to go to Elliot’s beach with my friends and I found that no girl gave me a second glance. I used to be unhappy about my looks, which are today my biggest strength.” Thanks to his early films and brother, Selvaraghavan, an image was created for him. In Padikathavan, when Tamannaah, the heroine, gives a dirty smirk at the hero, there is a punch line which has already become popular with the youth — “Enna mathiri pasangale partha pidikathu. Parka parka thaan pidikkum.” (You won’t like guys like me the first time. The more you see of me, the more you’ll like me. )
As the star himself says, “Selva created my screen image. Without his films I would still be roaming the streets of Chennai. I owe everything to him. He is my closest buddy.” About trying to take over his father-in-law, Rajini’s mantle, Dhanush says, “Long before I married Aishwarya, I was a big fan of Rajini sir and climbed on his huge cut-outs on the opening day of his films to put vibhuti on it. Today, as Rajini’s son-in-law, there are many restrictions on me. Although I try my best not to copy his style of acting, at times (a song in Polladhavan), I am influenced. But who hasn’t copied his style in Tamil films?”
The star concludes, “Life is beautiful with Aishwarya and son, Yatra, by my side.”

[tscii:8ddfdb5b83]Starring: Dhanush, Tamanna, Vivek.

Direction: Suraj

Music: Mani Sharma

Production: Vijaya productions

Gunslingers flying swords and blood-smeared bodies being tossed around clumsily – Padikathavan opens on a gory note and with intermittent break for love, romance, comedy and family, continues to sustain its violent self. Stripped bare of all its violence and love, the movie rather feels like a reincarnated version of Run, only that Run, with all its violence was rather believable and the love, real.

The banal script is unpretentious in its intentions, however. It lacks clarity and cruises through the million-times-treaded path to culminate into a corny climax, made popular in recent times.

The basic plot is pretty simple - Dhanush is a nonchalant youngster who as opposed to every single soul in the family, has no luck with studies. Addressed as Padikathavan by his family, he takes his role of fixing petty goons rather seriously when his family members crossroads with them. He accidently meets Tamanna and it is love at first sight – which is further substantiated by the duet song in less than 10 seconds of their first meet. A few clichés and songs later, she falls in love with him too. But Tamanna carries a deadly secret with her and Dhanush realizes that he has to fight for his right – Tamanna. Now that means thrashing out zillions of burly and makes-you-squirm-at-sight thugs single handedly. That’s not all – Dhanush has a rate for his head too since he earned the wrath of another blood hungry criminal accidentally.

So hacking heads, slashing body parts and throwing grenades at four wheelers are dime a dozen in the movie. Not that those scenes are executed tastefully though.

Dhanush’s love affair is clichéd but he’s largely had a field day. Be it annoying his father by cornering him, scheming plans with his friends to make Tamanna fall in love with him or simply in the stunt scenes – Dhanush has enjoyed his job. But the dialogues, about cussing parents for forcing in studies, could set a bad example. Although her role demands her to break into songs every time she appears in the frame, Tamanna shows convincing abilities. But she has no reason to use it in this movie, sadly.

Prathap Pothen, Shayaji Shinde, Suman and many others appear like junior artistes in the movie. A lion’s share of the movie’s time is occupied by the grizzly looking tough guys with their red costumes. Vivek, on the other hand, takes possession of the second half and there appears to be no driving factor in the script for the most part. Mani Sharma’s tunes are catchy and the rerecording, earsplitting.

On the whole, Padikathavan struggles to identify itself between comedy and violence and ends up not being both.

Verdict – Only for the strong stomachs!

[tscii:177b460bb3]PADIKATHAVAN- SIFY REVIEW
By Moviebuzz

The pre-release publicity campaign of the film was that it was a laugh riot, but actually the film is in the action genre with half a dozen of villains in hideous wigs and get-up’s who gets in the way of a larger than life hero who is uneducated and has a tremendous sense of humour. Keep your brains at home and watch the movie as another mass enetratiner.
There is nothing new in director Suraaj's story which seems to have been etched out of various earlier films including Run. It may sound strange, but there is a scene in the film where the heroine Tamaannaah smitten by the hero Dhanush sees him all around her (on Television, newspaper etc) as her mind plays games with her. Two days back we saw the same scene as Nayanthara's saw Vijay in her imaginations in Villu!

Radhakrishnan(Dhanush) alias Rocky is an 10th fail youngster who is looked down upon by his father (Pratap Pothen), as the rest of the family of brothers, sister and sister's-in-law consists of all educated and well placed people. Our hero's main job is to idle away his time in a mechanic shop with his group of friends (Mayilsami, Nellai Siva and others). 'Padikathavan and 10th failed' as his father refers to him, doubles up as a petty goon when his family members are in trouble.

One of his friends suggest that he falls in love with a highly educated girl, so earnestly he looks around by hovering around women's colleges. So he falls in love with Gayathri (Tamaannah) a rich girl who after a few misunderstandings and dream songs falls for him.

Meanwhile there are some goons after her, as her father is SamarasingaReddy (Suman) a deadly don in Andhra. Our hero saves her from her dad's rival (Sayaji Shinde) and follows to her home in Hyderabad, where he realizes that another Tirunelveli goon Kasi Anandan (Atul Kulkarni) has put a prize on his head!

In the first half there are some light hearted comedy of Dhanush which is enjoyable, especially his one liner and dialogues like Enna mathiri pasangala partha pidikathu. Parka parka thaan pidikkum. However in the second half there is crude comedy of Vivek, especially the scene where Vivek dressed as a woman in a temple pond is pawed by two other comedians under water!

The dialogue that Suman mouths that those who are educated think only of themselves while the uneducated have consideration for his fellowmen is in bad taste especially when the government policy is for total literacy. The romance between the lead pair lacks chemistry.

Dhanush is in top form as he has never danced so well and has improved a lot in action (the climax fight is outstanding) and comedy while keeping his boy-next-door image intact. He has scored in the first half with his sutle comedy and clever one-liners that gets him the maximum claps. Tamannaah is pure eye-candy while all other fine actors like Sayaji Shinde, Suman and Atil Kulkarni and Prathap Pothen are wasted in insipid roles. The songs of Mani Sharma are pure mass numbers.

Verdict: Mass masala [/tscii:177b460bb3]

Padikkathavan is a commercial cocktail-REDIFF

Sun Pictures' Padikkathavan (Illiterate) starring upcoming star-in-the-making Dhanush, directed by Suraaj can be called a masala entertainer that doesn't take itself too seriously -- except in parts. And they've fairly succeeded in bringing you a filmi biryani with a little bit of everything.

The film begins with the hero in Thirunelveli which, after Madurai [Images], is the favourite hunting-ground of Tamil Nadu's gangsters. Here too, there's one vicious rowdy, Kasi Anandhan (Atul Kulkarni, absolutely wasted) who's ruling the roost but even as he's prepared to sway the state, his brother ends up getting killed by a mysterious assailant.

And then the action moves to Chennai.

Playing the illiterate, snarky youth who's permanently wise-cracking about his shortcomings is something that's unique to Dhanush, and as Radhakrishnan aka Rocky, he fits the part to a T. Everyone in his family, starting from father Ramakrishnan (Prathap Pothen) to his sister is a double degree holder but poor Rocky hasn't even managed to pass 10 standard, and is the errand boy to his family members.

His coterie, led by Mayilsamy and Co encourage him to join a tutorial, but that ends in a comical disaster as well, and that's when they cook up a novel scheme: Rocky could fall in love with an educated girl and gain all the respect education confers on anyone.

That's the route Rocky follows and enter Gayathri (Tamanna) with her milk-white complexion who's studying aeronautical science in a prestigious college and who, with a minimum of persuasion, falls in love with Rocky quite quickly. Black is in our culture, she says but she herself, as the girl, must be fair and lovely, of course!

Matters go along smoothly, with the mandatory songs by Mani Sharma. Then, trouble brews. That's the cue for certain cleverly inserted bash-fests and the entrance of Samara Simma Reddy (Suman) and his arch enemy, Rami Reddy (Shayaji Shinde, who flaps about in a dhoti and chains).

Assault Arumugam (Vivek) as the hapless wannabee rowdy makes an appearance and fireworks explode on the screen, and masala-mode is fully underway with hordes of villains.

That's something that dogs the whole movie, actually: there are simply too many characters and minor celebrities who seemingly have nothing to do. Cases in point: Prathap Pothen, Deva Darshini, Kadhal Dandapani, Santhana Bharathi -- the list is endless.

This flick is all about Dhanush and only Dhanush: he's danced, fought, smirked and made snarky comments every alternate second. Here's the thing: he actually makes it work, most of the time. There are several pot-shots at leading stars and heroes, punch dialogues and fights; but Dhanush's comic timing is impeccable. His Bruce Lee avatar is a bit difficult to swallow without any background, but what the heck; there have been worse incarnations onscreen. For every dialogue he utters about uneducated young men who have every right to win, the cheers hit the roof.

Tamanna adds flavour to the pot-boiler; her role is that of a typical heroine, she's got little to do except make faces and dance, but there's a rather neat twist in the tale involving her, which makes things interesting.

Vivek provides some laughs but things get contrived after a point. All the villains are uniformly shrieking machines who order someone's head to be chopped off, all the time. Suman is the only exception in a couple of scenes. 8:36 pm (15 hours ago) Revant
A Venkatesh's camera work suits the movie's purpose, while Mani Sharma's music is all sound and fury. Suraaj's script and dialogues are all meant to gently shape Dhanush as the next superstar and it seems to be working. In this commercial cocktail, there's plenty of chutzpah, dialogue and bashing while logic has taken a toss.

Padikkathavan isn't meant for lovers of serious or meaningful cinema but if you're in the mood for three hours of pure entertainment, this one is your best bet.

A fan's review:

My Review: PADIKATHAVAN

The company with the midas touch , "Sun Pictures" have once again proved that what ever they touch turns into gold.Their 4th venture jointly presented by the legendary Vijaya Productions is sure to reap a bounty harvest this pongal.Suraaj has become a master in churning out action-comedies. And for Dhanush it proves once again what a shrewd decision maker he is .

Plot : A love story of an uneducated boy & an intelligent girl with lots of twists & turns .

Dhanush : He has done a neat job in a role that seems to be exclusively written for him. Though in the first half he disappoints with the same " love smitten angry young man " mode of his that has become redundant , he enlivens the proceedings in the second half along with Vivek. He dances like a dream & packs a punch in the comedy scenes. By trying out various genres & successfully at that ,he has proved that he is a worthy talent indeed who's actions speak volumes rather than his words.

Thamana : The story does not provide enough fodder for her talents though she looks gorgeous & glamorous in this movie than ever before. However she must take care as far as the lip-sinc is concerned .

Vivek: Though we see Vivek on screen ,the role he plays only brings Vadivelu in front of our eyes.(may be because it was originally written for him ) But it is one of the most hilarious comedy track we have seen from him in the recent times. The stomach ache due to the laughter has not reduced still.

Suman : His is more of a supporting role rather than that of a villain & it suits him better than over the top ones he played in the movies last year.

Shyaji Shinde & Atul Kulkarni have nothing new to offer.

Music by Mani SHarma is nothing to talk about. May be the songs may become hit after repeated hearing .

A.Venkatesh's cinematography is not spectacular but adequate for a commercial potboiler.

Story , Screenplay , Dialogues & direction are by Suraaj. He has come with a very interesting screenplay with enough twists & turns to keep one guessing till the climax. His dilagues , especially the humorous ones are a revelation.Though certain male-chauvinistic dialogues that come in the first half are clearly aimed at the front benchers.

But one aspect that irks the reviewer is how long the creators make movies with scenes which encourage eve-teasing & harassment of girls in the name of love. Also glorifying uneducated youth in the times of huge advancements in education sectors is laughable.

On the whole the movie is worth a hearty laugh & family get together.

Bottomline : Suraaj & Dhanush on a Hattrick.

3.5/5

'Padikkadhavan' Movie Review

Cast: Dhanush, Thamana, Vivek, Atul Kulkarni, Suman, Sayaji Shinde, Prathap Pothen, Devadarshini, 'Kadhal' Dhandapani, Santhana Bharathy and Mayilsamy Direction: Suraaj
Music: Mani Sharma

Cut 1

Dhanush plays Radhakarishnan (Rocky) who is ridiculed by all in his family for not being able to pass 10th standard. He is, therefore, assigned to do all the errands of his family members.

Cut 2

Kasi Anandhan (Atul Kulkarni), a local kingpin in Thirunelveli prepares to spread his reign of terror network across the state and his brother is eliminated by a mysterious assailant.

Back to groove...

'Padikkadhavan', starts off in a thrilling fashion but immediately changes track to fun filled story. While the major portion of the first half moves with comedy and romance, the second half is filled with gang wars and noisy sequences. Though the director has managed to make an entertainer with action, romance, comedy and emotion, the lack of focus and sub plots mar the impact.

Dhanush and his friends, led by Mayilsamy, encourage him to join a tutorial, but that ends in a comical disaster as well. Staring down the barrel, they think up a novel idea and suggest it to Dhanush: befriend and fall in love with an educated girl and gain all the respect of friends and family.

Gayathri (Thamana), the fair-skinned girl with hour glass figure, who studies aeronautical science in MIT, falls for Dhanush's witty charm.

Trouble erupts with the entry of Samara Simma Reddy (Suman) and his arch enemy, Rami Reddy (Shayaji Shinde). Assault Arumugam (Vivek) as 'rowdy', comes to the rescue of Rocky and explodes comedy crackers on screen. Though Vivek succeeds in providing some laughs it is the bunch villains who make us laugh more.

The rest of the movie tells you how Dhanush gets back his lover amidst a lot of violence and blood shed. The 'Run' like climax fails to live up to the expectations despite Dhanush's spirited show in the scene.

Director Suraaj has created too many characters and roped in familiar actors like Prathap Pothen, Devadarshini, 'Kadhal' Dhandapani, Santhana Bharathi but he has failed to do justice to their roles and abilities.

While Suraaj has managed to develop the suspense by introducing Kasi Anandan in the first scene, he hasn't done much to sustain the tempo, as the story moves on to tell the story of Dhanush. When the connection between the two is revealed at the end, it fails to make impress, due to various deviations and sub plots in the narrative. The Suman - Sayaji Shinde rivalry confuses and irritates rather than adding to the tempo.

However, there is no denying the fact that the first half and to a large extent second half manage to hold your interest because of the light and comical moments. Dhanush and co in the first half and Vivek - Dhanush in the second half provide the entertainment. The director has provided us with plenty of commercial ingredients without bothering about logic. The over dosage and unrealistic portrayal of the gang war between rival groups armed with sophisticated guns is one illogical ingredient.

Dhanush dances nicely and fights ferociously. Bruce Lee like stunts continues to allure the youngsters. He steals the limelight with his unique expressions in comedy sequences. He is amazingly casual in portraying a commoner with no histrionic abilities.

Thamana, get very little scope to act but adds to the glamour quotient with her perfect figure and fair skin. A. Venkatesh's camera work is competent, while Mani Sharma's music is all noisy.

Verdict : Made for masses

Padikathavan Movie Review

Director Suraaj has tried his hand at time-tested theme. An average-looking youth, who falls in love with a rich and a charming girl. He overcomes a gang of baddies who bay for his blood to eventually hold the hands of his beloved. Suraaj has tried a marriage between action and comedy. However a sense of deja vu prevails as the film progresses.

The director has strictly applied the rules of Tamil film grammar in the first-half as the hero is ridiculed by his father, he spends his time with a set of good-for-nothing friends and cliched sequences leading to romance blossoming between the lead pair. Towards the latter part, the influence of 'mirch masala' Telugu action films cannot be denied.

Radhakrishnan alias Rocky (Dhanush) is the youngest son of an auditor (Prathap Pothen) in Chennai. In the family of intellectuals, Rocky is unique. He has been attempting for several years to pass his matriculation examinations. This invites the wrath of his father.

Inspired by one of his friend's (Suman Shetty) suggestion that he love a well-educated girl and marry her, Rocky begins his search for one. He comes across Gayathri (Tamanna), an aeronautical student. As usual after 'cat and mouse game', Rocky wins over Gayathri's heart. Unfortunately a group of goons from Andhra Pradesh come after her. Gayathri gets rescued by her father Samarasinha Reddy (Suman), a rich and an influential man in Andhra Pradesh. She is forced to go to her native by father.

Meanwhile, Rocky begins his journey in search of his beloved. When he lands in Andhra Pradesh, he is thrown open to many challenges and surprises. He starts to fight unknown enemies. When it looks like he had sorted out all troubles and ready to hold Gayathri's hands, hurdle comes in the form of Kasi (Atul Kulkarni), a dreaded goon from Thirunelveli . How he clears the last hurdle in his journey to wedlock his beloved forms the climax.

It is a 'typical' Dhanush in the film. He plays to his strength. Thanks to his boy-next-door looks, he manages to bring life into the character. Dhanush has managed well to combine both action and humour. His hard toil is visible all through the film.

Tamanna looks fresh and refreshing. Though she plays a cliched heroine in the film, her charming looks does woo the audience. Vivek as 'Assault' Arumugham evokes abundant humour. In the company of 'Cell' Murugan and 'Bonda' Mani, he is at his best bringing the roof down with laughter. Interestingly, Vivek does a Vadivelu this time around.
He seems to have been part of a comedy track that Vadivelu had often played in his earlier movies.

Suman as Tamman's dad fits the role well, while the likes of Shayaji Shinde and Atul Kulkarni speak from their belly. Of course a host of stunt artistes wielding sickles and guns do form part of the movie.

Mani Sharma's has come up with a racy music thanks to his chart busters in recent Telugu films. Produced by Vijaya Productions and presented by Sun Pictures, Padikathavan reminds us of films like Winner and Run. It would be a treat for those who love some hardcore action combined with fun.

Padikathavan is worth a watch for its unadulterated masala.

Saw Padikkathavan. Suraaj has really given a entertainer but barring the usual gangster's intro and movement and the logic it was quite a good movie. I felt that the way he made the gangsters go against each other instead of supposedly saying "dei nee yengey irunthaalum yen kaila thaan da saavae" was quite different.

Considering that this was a commercial entertainer and the story is bound to be a arucha maavu, the direction and the acting of dhanush really sustains the movie.

Dhanush in demand!
By Moviebuzz | Sunday, 18 January , 2009, 17:31

The success of Padikathavan has made Dhanush red hot in the trade. His Pongal film has penetrated to the B & C audiences mainly due to Sun Pictures marketing clout and the film's mass appeal.

Says a leading distributor on conditions of anonymity: "Padikkathavan is a mass film and is doing very well in rural areas. Dhanush has reached a different range as a commercial hero; he can now be counted among the top five saleable heroes'.

The trade buzz is that the film will touch Rs 17 crore in collections, the highest ever for a Dhanush film."

It has made his next release Kutty (Tamil remake of Telugu Arya) with his lucky Thiruvilayadal heroine Shriya, hot in the market. And there is a big buzz around his next untitled film with Vetrimaran, for which the shoot starts in February 16 in Madurai.

As of now Trisha is likely to be the heroine in this film where she will play a local Anglo Indian girl. But director Vetrimaran says nothing has been confirmed and he is on the lookout for a new face for the film.

Vetri says it will be a rural film and he and Dhanush are giving finishing touches before starting the shoot

The views expressed in the article are the author's and not of Sify.com.

I wont be surprised if this movie becomes a super hit...This movie worked for me but not villu.. :)

At the Pongal box-office it was a neck to neck battle between Villu and Padikkathavan, both films opened big with almost capacity occupancy. Villu which released two days earlier in eight screens on January 12 was mainly in single screens, and avoided multiplexes for some strange reasons. Padikkathavan on the other hand released big in 11 Chennai city screens including the multiplexes, the big screen in Sathyam and Inox, which together netted a whopping Rs 29.45 lakhs in five days! Villu had better occupancy percentage from eight screens but could not manage the kind of revenue that Padikkathavan pulled off thanks to the multiplexes. Padikkathavan is in the number one slot followed by Villu at number two and in the third position is Chandini Chowk To China, which opened big in five Chennai screens. At number four is Kathalena Summa Illa, which opened in seven screens with limited shows. In the fifth position is Aamir Khan-Asin`s Ghajini which continues to rock in its fifth week.

Padikkathavan
Cast: Dhanush, Tamannaah, Suman, Atul agnihotri, Vivek, Sayaji Shinde
Director: Suraaj
+ Dhanush, Climax fight, one-liners
- Cliche story, Vivek`s crass comedy

Rajini on Padikathavan

Padikathavan, the latest Dhanush starrer has picked up very well and has been declared a hit. It is a hat-trick victory for Dhanush and Suraj. The director had arranged for a special screening of the film at the Four Frames Theatre last evening. This show was attended by Dhanush's father-in-law super star Rajinikanth along with his wife and daughters. The Honorable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Karunanidhi also watched the film along with them. Sources say that all of them thoroughly enjoyed the film. The superstar had reportedly heaped praise on Dhanush's performance in Padikathavan.

Rajinikanth: "Maapilai, I’m proud of you"
By Moviebuzz | Wednesday, 21 January , 2009, 20:49

Superstar Rajinikanth saw a special screening of his son-in-law Dhanush's Padikkathavan on Tuesday evening at Four Frames preview theatre in Chennai.

He was to see it earlier but it did not work out as he was caught up with Endhiran shoot. Rajini was also eager because the title itself was borrowed from an earlier hit he had done.

After watching the film, he got out of the preview theatre, hugged and congratulated Dhanush. The superstar was all smiles and said- " Maapillai, I' m proud of you. The film is truly a mass entertainer."

Later Dhanush introduced his Padikkathavan heroine Tamannaah to his father-in-law. For Tammu, it was a dream come true to meet the superstar and she took his blessings.

Genre: Action

Director: Suraaj

Cast: Dhanush, Tamanna, Vivekh

Storyline: The hero, a school dropout, decides to marry an educated girl. He finds her but the rest isn’t easy.

Bottomline: Starters impress, but the main course changes tack in strange fashion.

After fairly interesting sojourns with Sundar C (‘Thalainagaram’) and Arjun (‘Marudhamalai’), writer-director Suraaj enters the arena, this time with Dhanush. And after a new success spell that began with ‘Polladhavan,&# 8217; a Rajini film title, Dhanush comes out with another pa-in-law film name, ‘Padikkadhavan’ (U/A).

The line

The film begins on a promising note. In a family of highly educated father, sons, daughter and daughters-in-law, Raki (Dhanush), one of the sons, turns out to be the proverbial black sheep. Struggling to complete his Class X for a few years he gives up. He’s the man Friday of the house doing odd jobs for everyone. If you decide the tale would go a full circle and the family would realize the worth of the son one day, you are mistaken. He falls in love with college student Gayatri (Tamanna), sees to it that she reciprocates and when her dad whisks her away to Andhra Pradesh, follows her all the way … Raki’s family doesn’t come into the picture at all after the few initial scenes!

As always is the case, Gayatri is a don’s (Suman) daughter. Incidentally, you notice certain similarities between ‘Villu’ and this Sun Pictures’ production. Besides the dads of the two heroines being villains, ‘Padikkadhavan’ too opens with a couple of lines from songs of MGR films. At one point you even see the heroines of the two films donning the same kind of outfit!

Dhanush has already proved his mettle in such roles. The ‘Padikkadhavan’ role too suits him well. And though his physique has improved considerably, however hard you try it isn’t easy to believe that he can take on a whole lot of thugs at the same time! Tamanna looks gorgeous, but sadly she hasn’t bothered too much about lip sync.

Vivekh’s track begins on a different note. The self-proclaimed ‘dada’ is at his best when he weeps in fear within the confines of the wash room. But when he drifts into his by-now-stale ‘comedy’ of trying to pass off as a woman, he irritates.

The three villains — Atul Kulkarni, Sayaji Shinde and Suman — are a handful. Though cantankerous, Kulkarni and Suman keep their tempers under control. Only Shinde is unnecessarily loud.

Unobtrusive but effective, A. Venkatesh’s cinematography is a plus. The lighting in the climax when Dhanush walks into Atul Kulkarni’s den is an example. Re-recording (Mani Sharma) for the fight scene that follows the above sequence makes an impact.

Suraaj’s treatment allows the story to hang loose and end abruptly. The magic of the beginning is lost when the narration begins to take an entirely different route leaving the earlier part high and dry.

Ajith, after the Padikathavan glory…

January 28, 2009

Suraj, director of the Pongal release Padikathavan, is likely to direct Ajith according to believable sources. Plans for Ajith's next project, incidentally his 49th film, however is concrete. Directed by Charan, the movie will star Sameera Reddy in the lead and will be scored by Harris Jeyaraj. Ajith’s 50th film will be directed by Venkat Prabhu.

Now, as it seems, Ajith will be in another film directed by Suraj. Though the information is not flowing in from Suraj or Ajith, the Kollywood news trappers ascertain the possibility quite strongly. This is in spite of the previous grapevine of the Suraj - Ajith combo before Aegan having gone into silence.

All said and done, as per latest trade reports, Padikathavan is leading the collection charts among the Pongal release movies.

Bala's Naan Kadavul, has taken a fantastic opening in 11 Chennai screens, and has netted approximately Rs 58 lakh. At the multiplexes and single screens like I-Dreams in Royapuram, the film is fabulous while at the newly renovated Parankimala Jyoti near Kathipara Junction the film has done 95 per cent in three days. Please note that even though vested interests have unleashed a negative campaign against the film, it is still the clear Number 1 by a mile. At number two is Padikkathavan, which is holding on well due to Sun TV boosting up their campaign. In the third position is Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu, which is doing well as multiplexes and single screens have increased their shows. Villu just manages to cling on to the fourth position, while Slumdog Millionaire, thanks to the curiosity factor, has made a strong comeback to the charts.
