Shocked to see the murder of SI veRRivEl... There were so many people around him (include two Honoroble Ministers) witnessing him go through the pain and no one was able to save him. There was media people filiming this too ( and ). The sad part is the now it seems he was murdered by mistake.

Incidents like this, law college and in Jarkhand make you wonder where India is going...

Totally agree with him! Though I haven't travelled as widely as him worldwide, I've travelled enough in India (i.e. till 2003, unless things have suddenly changed enormously better after that), to totally agree with each of his statements. For e.g., I have seen the progressive deterioration of Bangalore in the matter of pollution - month after month during my visits - from 1985 to 2002. Sickening:-(

Interestingly, he chose to single out Kerala (esp Calicut, the first litter free city in India) as different from rest of India. Very true!

Funnily, PP madam's reply proves one of his statements - that we Indians don't care - and instead comfortably choose to call him names :-)

First of all forget about who is making such statements.

Personally I don't care who points out my problems, mistakes, errors, shortcomings (and over the years, also matured to filter out the language / tone in which such things are delivered to me). For that matter, we don't even know how this blogger looks like, eats like, lives like etc. To me, it's just a nameless entity that bothered to look at the problems / issues of a foreign nation, in comparison with others he visited.

Ultimately, if I want to improve, I need to look at things objectively and analyze things properly. Getting emotional doesn't help (rather it only hurts). That's about it!

As even an external person can easily discern, Kozhikkode (aka Calicut) is so clean. And it is only 4 hours bus journey from ukkadam (Cbe).

What stops our officials (& political bigwigs) of Cbe to go there, study and implement the methods here? And, the budget of Cbe should be a much better / comfortable one while the population / quality of people etc are not great negatives either.

Where is the will?

thank you sean paul kelley. it is a well written article. the indian media have hoodwinked their people by writing mainly glamourous issues catering to the middle class and ignoring the problem of the poor lower classes.

the bureaucrats and the media is forever obsessed about foreign nations planning or trying to undermine their nation and hence the obsession with weapons. the same can be said about the dummy generals in pakistan.

the real threat to india would come from the poor .lower classes.. already there is the violent maoist rebels active in many indian states.

actually, india can do better by focussing in providing better sanitation for its people. it is said 600 millions indians dont have access to toilets. surely, a nation that can send rockets into space can also build toilets for its people.

there are three ways to handle a issue:

1. go into a state of denial and abuse the critic

2. disagree with the criticism and give a scholarly rebuttal

3. do an introspection and work on attacking the issue

The above is not only for this issue, but for everything in our life.

It is unfortunate my righteous anger at a foreigner deriding our country should sound as 'abuse'! :( When an outsider pokes his nose uninvited into our personal, domestic/family issue do we take it well, smiling and magnanimous?
The criticism needs no rebuttal- all that is criticised is there in the open- obvious, for anyone to see! Rome was not built in seven days; India- the mega state cannot be built in half a century! Scholarly solutions are always not the remedy but patience and responsible contribution which may do the trick. Such a multi-pronged issue needs suggestions from all without prejudice: mine I have presented as charity begins at home.
It beats me how one can remain insensitive to such 'superior', arrogant tone in a foreign visitor of the country!

With all due respects - Japan rose from its ashes like a Phoenix in about the same time as we have been an independent country. Agreed that Rome was not built in seven days, but it did not take half a century either.

I would like to quote Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam in this context:

YOU say that our government is inefficient. YOU say that our laws are too old. YOU say that the municipality does not pick up the garbage. YOU say that the phones don't work, the railways are a joke, the airline is the worst in the world, mails never reach their destination. YOU say that our country has been fed to the dogs and is the absolute pits. YOU say, say and say.

What do YOU do about it? Take a person on his way to Singapore. Give him a name - YOURS. Give him a face - YOURS. YOU walk out of the airport and you are at your International best. In Singapore you don't throw cigarette butts on the roads or eat in the stores. YOU are as proud of their Underground Links as they are. You pay $5 (approx. Rs. 60) to drive through Orchard Road (equivalent of Mahim Causeway or Pedder Road) between 5 PM and 8 PM.

YOU comeback to the parking lot to punch your parking ticket if you have over stayed in a restaurant or a shopping mall irrespective of your status identity. In Singapore you don't say anything, DO YOU? YOU wouldn't dare to eat in public during Ramadan, in Dubai. YOU would not dare to go out without your head covered in Jeddah. YOU would not dare to buy an employee of the telephone exchange in London at 10 pounds (Rs. 650) a month to, "see to it that my STD and ISD calls are billed to someone else." YOU would not dare to speed beyond 55 mph (88 kph) in Washington and then tell the traffic cop, "Jaanta hai sala main kaun hoon (Do you know who I am?). I am so and so's son. Take your two bucks and get lost." YOU wouldn't chuck an empty coconut shell anywhere other than the garbage pail on the beaches in Australia and New Zealand. Why don't YOU spit Paan on the streets of Tokyo? Why don't YOU use examination jockeys or buy fake certificates in Boston? We are still talking of the same YOU. YOU who can respect and conform to a foreign system in other countries but cannot in your own. You who will throw papers and cigarettes on the road the moment you touch Indian ground. If you can be an involved and appreciative citizen in an alien country why cannot you be the same here in India. Once in an interview, the famous Ex-municipal commissioner of Bombay Mr.Tinaikar had a point to make. "Rich people's dogs are walked on the streets to leave their affluent droppings all over the place," he said. "And then the same people turn around to criticize and blame the authorities for inefficiency and dirty pavements. What do they expect the officers to do? Go down with a broom every time their dog feels the pressure in his bowels? In America every dog owner has to clean up after his pet has done the job. Same in Japan. Will the Indian citizen do that here?" He's right. We go to the polls to choose a government and after that forfeit all responsibility. We sit back wanting to be pampered and expect the government to do everything for us whilst our contribution is totally negative. We expect the government to clean up but we are not going to stop chucking garbage all over the place nor are we going to stop to pick a up a stray piece of paper and throw it in the bin. We expect the railways to provide clean bathrooms but we are not going to learn the proper use of bathrooms. We want Indian Airlines and Air India to provide the best of food and toiletries but we are not going to stop pilfering at the least opportunity. This applies even to the staff who is known not to pass on the service to the public. When it comes to burning social issues like those related to women, dowry, girl child and others, we make loud drawing room protestations and continue to do the reverse at home. Our excuse? "It's the whole system which has to change, how will it matter if I alone forego my sons' rights to a dowry." So who's going to change the system? What does a system consist of? Very conveniently for us it consists of our neighbors, other households, other cities, other communities and the government. But definitely not me and YOU. When it comes to us actually making a positive contribution to the system we lock ourselves along with our families into a safe cocoon and look into the distance at countries far away and wait for a Mr. Clean to come along & work miracles for us with a majestic sweep of his hand. Or we leave the country and run away. Like lazy cowards hounded by our fears we run to America to bask in their glory and praise their system. When New York becomes insecure we run to England. When England experiences unemployment, we take the next flight out to the Gulf. When the Gulf is war struck, we demand to be rescued and brought home by the Indian government. Everybody is out to abuse and rape the country. Nobody thinks of feeding the system. Our conscience is mortgaged to money.

Dear Indians, The article is highly thought inductive, calls for a great deal of introspection and pricks one's conscience too....I am echoing J.F. Kennedy's words to his fellow Americans to relate to Indians.....

"ASK WHAT WE CAN DO FOR INDIA AND DO WHAT HAS TO BE DONE TO MAKE INDIA WHAT AMERICA AND OTHER WESTERN COUNTRIES ARE TODAY"

Lets do what India needs from us.

I hope we do not consider our ex-president as an outsider too. It does not matter who points out our flaws. As a matter of fact, it is shameful that it takes an outsider to point out to us, what is happening right under our noses. It is akin to visiting people who live close to the airport or a garbage dump; We, the visitors, are overwhelmed by the noise / stench. Those who live there seem to have gotten used to it and could not care less.

No offense meant to anyone. Just my 0.02 paise.

Cheers,

Rajan

When spiritual aspirants have certain weakness, its better they properly take up relevant measures or steps and then practice spirituality. One can properly and legally find a mate and still pursue spiritual quest.

Jokes apart, why does out reverence usually stem from abstinence/asceticism, unless he had earlier taken moral high ground on these issues and has now proved to be duplicitous ?

pr,

I was waiting for someone to ask this question. Moral grace ellame naame namakku pottukitta "oru veli" thaan. I agree. and like what u say, when his spiritual messages are rightly delivered, only that should matter. After all, every aspirant would have a basic flaw or weakness in his character (not necessarily sexual based) which he continuesly tries to overcome or defeat and win over.

When u declare urself as a "guru" or "swamji" U are bound to have won over ur senses and cannot have basic flaws of gruhastha.

IF I remember right, there was a brahmachari (or swamiji) who actually fell in love with one of his devotee, he PROMPTLY gave up his sanyasa and married her. NOW THAT IS SOMETHING one should respect.

What matters is the MENTALITY of normal layman as "HOW A SWAMIJI" needs to behave. When that is not kept up, it amounts to "BREACH OF TRUST" in the name of religion or spirituality. and...that as far as my limited knowledge is concerned HAS TREMENDOUS negative marks.

Exactly what interests me. We have this fascination for asceticism, precisely because it is - in a matter of degree - a 'virtue' that is unlike us. And in someway every 'failing' of a 'holy' cow gives a க்ரூர த்ருப்தி that this one is no different from the rest of us (i.e. it's only a question of degree). But this coexists with the discomfort in the possibility that "there is probably no-one out there, who has figured it all out".

Anyway regarding particular cases, the demand for false promises is huge, so there is supply.

thats all there is to it.

As an individual aspirant, u have ur life, you can fall or rise. its your life! You take a choice. Take it slow, fast or give a break, have fun then come back...NONE can question u.

When u adress a larger crowd and lead them, ur mistakes esp of hypocritic nature become very costly.

If it is meant to be a joke, your joke is ANNOYING. Dont do it again!thamiz, of course I don't deny he was cheating the public by donning காவி and projecting himself as a முற்றும் துறந்த மாமுனி.

My questions was why we value asceticism so much.
He would have drawn lesser crowd/respect if he had been a regular சம்சாரி sharing his 'wisdom'.Whether someone finds his teaching inspiring/useful etc. should not be highly dependent on these things.

As long as we continue to value this, there will be a new 'ascetic' who will come and make us jaw-drop and then disappoint us by being a regular guy.

Then we will burn effigies, picket ashramam etc.

Rioting Hindu Munnani fellows have asked for
1) fatwa to be issued on Nithyananda (by whom ?!)
2) his assets to be seized !

I find such reactions very funny, particularly 2.

If people paid money to come to his lectures, mass meditation sessions and got nothing (i.e. not as much enlightenment as expected etc.) they should perhaps have asked for the money back even if he was really an ascetic !

Even as we speak today there are non-ascetic running meditation techniques (car வாங்கணும்னா அதை ஓட்டுற மாதிரி நினைச்சிகிட்டு அதன் மேல உங்க மனஒளியை(!) செலுத்துங்க etc.). People travel far and wide and pay good money to attend these programs. Whatever works.

After all they need to remember vishwamitra faultered to have menaka. Everybody faulters. But rising up and THEN FAULTERING BACK is different. He was a rishi, he faultered, he was not dubious, his life was clear and not misleading.

The person in question, led a dubious life WHICH IS VERY UNLIKELY of the title. This person is NOT A SAINT. He di dnot lead a life of saint. He was a man probably with superior knowledge.

Let him FORGO the title, NOBODY then DARE to question him on his conduct. ITs his personal problem. Incase somebody needs energy from his potion of spiritual understanding, DRINK and leave. I offer u take. Dont question my personal life.

Let me isolate myself from this issue as I am not a believer. So, I never believed him ever.

I am not sure you read kadavuLai kaNdeen series (10 episodes) by CN and way he was projecting him as "God". It was very serious writing about him. Now he is in big trouble more than this nithyaanandha!

Also, read sanjeevi's jeyamohan link. People beleived him of something else. They feel that he betrayed/cheated them and they also feel he somehow brought down the hinduism or of that sort.

If he clearly revealed his other part with confidence, then there is no problem. I think people are respected for controlling their feelings. When they find him not so, they are really upset about it.

PR: You can go on justify anything. But this is how charunivedita who claimed that nithyanada as kadavuL feels. This is his own words..

I hope now you get the picture! 8-)

It is not something like tehalka setup a team to capture the happenings in video.

It seems somebody very close the Nithyanatha ,later had some personal problem with him , setup a camera in nithayantha room ,capture the video and sent the CD to all leading TV and press media .

Among TV's Sun Tv was fast in action ..Among press Nakeeran was fast in action.

I got a email from kumudam ,which has been publishing writings of same nithyanantha ,, they attched a image with various poses of this matter and "excluisve video" ,pls join with us online kumudam..message.

I, in general was talking on the nuisance of most of the medias.. yes any media who got this news would have done similar things, may be the level might have differed.

thamiz, I had mentioned in an earlier post that indeed the sAmiyAr had "cheated" his believers by projecting himself as an ascetic when he was not.

My question is what it is that the 'follower's were consuming ? His lecture, aanmeega 'gyaan' or his personality ? Quite obviously people take his words seriously ONLY because he was a celibate saamiyAr.
As long as we place that as a 'premium' these things will keep happening.

btw let CN write what he wants I say ! He even advertises for an engineering college calling it the best ever etc. Tomorrow if it loses accreditation he will pull it off his site.

My question is what it is that the 'follower's were consuming ? His lecture, aanmeega 'gyaan' or his personality ? Quite obviously people take his words seriously ONLY because he was a celibate saamiyAr.
As long as we place that as a 'premium' these things will keep happening.
P_R, the issue is that he projected himself as a celibate saamiyaar. You don't have to do that - witness Rajneesh, for example. But if you dishonestly pretend to be something you're not, it's the hypocrisy that breeds contempt.

When I lived in Bangalore in the early 1990s, there was a rather famous young sanyasi, I think he was the head of a matha, who'd released a number of cassettes with devotional chanting and music. He fell in love with the daughter of one of the members of his matha, and gave up sanyasa and his post to marry her. Something similar happened last year, again in Karnataka, when the head of a matha gave up sanyasa to marry a woman. Neither of these incidents created a scandal, because the godmen in question weren't carrying on an affair in secret while pretending to be oh-so-holy-and-celibate in public.

They have good lawyers. If someone induces you to pay money to them under false pretences, you can in law demand restitution - the return of the money.

As long as we put a premium on celibacy - such folks will continue to come, they will become idols and then progress to becoming effigies.
It's not celibacy - it's austerity we put a premium on. Celibacy's one form of austerity, sure, but it isn't the only form that works or that attracts followers. At the end of the day, spirituality's portrayed as the antithesis of materialism. As a result, people who claim to be spiritual guides (as distinct from, say, secular philosophers) are expected to be more austere and less immersed in materialism than others. I don't think that's a particularly unreasonable expectation if you buy into that world view.

In my view, the contrast I just made between secular philosophers and religious guides shows how illogical "following" spiritual leaders is in comparison with "following" secular philosophers. But that's an entirely different issue, for an entirely different thread.

In this Nithyananda case too, I've come across statements from the 'patriots' and 'nationalists' like, "it is a conspiracy by Western Evangelists", refering to the fellow(Lenin, who had converted from Christianity to Hinduism) who had video taped this 'episode'.

In my view, the contrast I just made between secular philosophers and religious guides shows how illogical "following" spiritual leaders is in comparison with "following" secular philosophers. Yeah exactly. What most of us want is not exactly a understanding of the universe but some form of

I do see (I have always seen from my first post here) that people's reverence for asceticism precisely because it is 'unlike how they lead their life'. This, while actually they are largely seeking solutions which are likely to come from fellow practitioners !

If someone induces you to pay money to them under false pretences, you can in law demand restitution - the return of the money.
It will be interesting to follow how this progresses. There must be precedents for cases of this sort. If one were to describe cheating as 'obtaining money but not delivering the commensurate goods and services', then it would be virtually impossible to charge him of this isn't it ?

The general trend aided largely by the media influence is a sort of insensitive state of mind, body and soul in people! People no longer react to atrocities with righteous anger; no deep emotional sympathy to pain(physical and mental) in fellow beings; but a cruel pleasure in the sufferings of others; a wicked expectation of misfortunes for others: very bad reflections of a diseased/unnatuaral psyche! :cry2: These themes are the fodder for the utter trash telecast as mega serials! :hammer: It is a great injustice to the aged people( there are many now than before) whose sole entertaiment and recreation is watching TV! Don't they deserve better fare? Why thrust such rot down their throat? No wonder such ladies as quoted in the incident see nothing shocking/sinful in their acts! :curse: Any heinous crime is justified, shown as 'normal'!!! :argh: A criminal shame!

Highly sickening! Absolutely ridiculous! A crying shame! Let me reproduce exactly the news in today's 'The Times of India, Mumbai':

New Delhi: In an observation that will cheer votaries of of pre-marital sex and living-in, the Supreme Court on Tuesday said a man and woman living together without marriage cannot be construed as an offence. 'When two adult people want to live together what is the offence? Does it amount to an offence? Living together is not an offence. It cannot be an offence,' a three judge bench of Chief Justice K.G.Balakrishnan, Deepak Verma and B.S.Chauhan said.

The court said even Lord Krishna and Radha lived together according to mythology.

The apex court said there was no law which prohibited live-in relationships or pre-marital sex. The observation came while the court reserved its judgement on a petition by actress Khusboo, seeking to quash 22 criminal cases filed against her after she allegedly endorsed pre-marital sex in interviews to magazines in 2006.

The judges grilled the counsel for some of the complainants and repeatedly stressed that the perceived immoral activities cannot be branded as offence. The counsel had argued that her comments adversely affected young minds.

'Please tell us what is the offence and under which section? Living together is a right to life,' the court said, referring to Article21 which granted right to life and liberty as a fundamental right.

It added that the views expressed by Khusboo were personal. 'How does it concern you? We are not bothered. At the most it is a personal view. How is it an offence? Under which provision of the law?' the bench asked the counsel.

The court further asked the complainants to show if any girls had eloped after the said interview. 'How many many homes have been affected?' the bench asked, enquiring if the complainants had daughters. When they said no, it shot back: 'Then how are you adversely affected?'

That is the end of the news under the title:SC: Pre-marital sex, living-in not crime

 :argh: :curse: :hammer: 'Brilliant', 'superb', 'excellent'...arguments and quotes from mythology, purely unrealistic, out-of-context, deceptive, misleading, irresponsible, arrogant words!!! Roguish and depraved men and women have the cheek to do and act in this manner! :hammer:

The clear realisation is: Khusboo is a rich woman, the judges are not untainted 'poor' men!

The first time I saw Swami N's sideview poster, it was pretty obvious how 'genuine' a samiyar he was. And I remarked it to a group of people then. This was a good year or two before the video was broadcasted. Why blame the imposter and not the gullible public?

Then the Supreme Court of India should recognise prostitution too and open up brothels in every town, because prostitutiion also is consensual. And why don't the judges who have made these observations advise their children to engage in premarital / extra-marital 'consensual' sex for a start?

Personal views are just that and in a democracy one should be able to hold on to them as long as its not against the laws.
(In a democracy we have the right to petition the government to amend the law.)
The question of morality/immorality does not arise here.

It has always been part of our culture, for that matter most cultures. It is just not legal in India.

Let us view things in context- not against what we did when were in the forests in stone age. What disciplines, norms, ethics have we built over these centuries of civilization to get to a sane state of monogamy and moral restraint to make human life more decent, meaningful, neighbour-friendly and fruitful are to be protected and handed over to posterity to improve upon. Legal irresponsibility is glaring in this verdict, the court must guide the people towards mutually healthy relationships. Personal views gain importance if the persons mouthing them happen to draw crowds of followers of impressionable minds. Social opinion counts for a society to prosper on progressive lines. Let us talk with relevance to our background, present customs. I do not see any family of my neighbourhood preaching pre-marital sex or living together fashion to their children. A majority of people as far as my observation goes want to continue healthy, happy relationships which come with commitment and responsibility. Let us not help this carefree, selfish, irresponsible mode of living take root in our country. This is a moral issue and not a legal one.

Man A marries Woman A.
Man A is powerful
Man A finds another woman desirable
Man A "marries" Woman B also in addition
Man A has children and grand children from both lines.
Man A becomes more powerful. Woman A and Woman B are happy with each other.
Indian constitution says only one wife is recognised - so the other one is what?

I beg to disagree with that. Adultery is a crime punishable by law. Premarital consensual sex is not, if there is no commercial intent involved.

If the secretary of the boss sleeps with a prospective customer to win some business, it is prostitution and is punishable under law. If the same boss's wife sleeps with the customer as she finds him attractive, then that is adultery and is also punishable under law. Funnily enough, under IPC Section 497, it is the unmarried man that is punishable and not the married woman.

However, if the boss's unmarried daughter sleeps with the same customer - then that is premarital consensual sex and is not illegal.

Assumption here is that this customer is unmarried too, of course.

However, if the boss's unmarried daughter sleeps with the same customer - then that is premarital consensual sex and is not illegal.

Assumption here is that this customer is unmarried too, of course.

Rajan

Very clear explanation of our unclear, hypocritical, faulty legal system and the utter lack of self-restraint in sexual desire and personal loyalty of many men and women who are gaining atrocious boldness and acceptance in the modern day. Without societal censure how can we expect to continue the beautiful relationship of marriage and family? Broken marriages, single parents, many wives( be they 'powerful' or ordinary wage-earners), piling cases in family courts, disillussionment in loyal, long-lasting, lifetime commitments are definitely disgraceful, sure shames to man endowed with six senses. If he decides he need not control any of senses how is he different from the beasts?

Very sad to live on to see an insensitive generation that takes it easy!!! I grew up pampered by utmost veneration to womanhood- no ogling, teasing, ragging can escape -first of none dared to venture at such 'chivalrous' acts- with mere 'thittu'. In a public bus, say for example, even before a lecherous boy/man can attempt at some body contact with the lady near him he is sure to have his foot'toes crushed by the silent body-guard the lady always has- a brother, father or husband. It has to be agreed today's women do not have the luck of such body-guards accompanying them everywhere. Practically impossible. We have now enterprising globe-trotting young women who are left to fend for themselves. The tragedy is instead of viewing male advances as odious our ladies are learning to enjoy them, welcome them!!! Increase in adultery, pre-marital sex, living together arrangements. one-night or more night stands, dating for as long as the partner is 'ineresting', blatant approval of all these in public forums, media and ultimately in the supreme court of a proud nation of venerable past.... :sigh2: ...yes, we are sinking into bestial depths of pure carnal sensitivity atropied from intelligent, wise, healthy discrimination.

May be I'm getting very old but not yet touched the stage of senility, hopefully! I see the trend clearly! And with a sinking heart! (My 2 eyes, 2 ears, my understanding faculty still function with reasonable correctness.) I also see the rock of sturdy womanhood continuing with unassuming dignity! In the present scenario a voice of reason and ashamed womanhood sounding odious is no surprise to me!!!

I aint here to talk about how I am for or against the law intervening in moral values.

my 2 cents are for "women enjoying the advances" bit .

Most of us cant dismiss the fact that, in general ptc buses, lusty middle aged spineless men, who adorn themselves with religious symbols to look like a friendly neighbour resort to silent SEXUAL HARASSMENTS. The girls who are targetted are pre teens, or early teens, who are TOO SCARED to open out and shout or dont even know if something wrong is happening.

Now, to my knowledge MOST LADIES do view a stranger's advance as filthy and distasteful. IF the man in question is a known acquaintance, friend, or colleague whom she has mutual interst ONLY THEN a woman enjoys them (provided again the feelings are mutual otherwise again I am sure no woman enjoys advances from any person whom she is not interested in) We are talking about harassment here, NOT flirtacious or casual advance by someone a woman may be intersted in.

Mrs.PP, I see that the movement away from traditional gender roles disturbs you. That is understandable, perhaps down the years I too will feel quite shaken when things change from how I have known them all along - say my son decides to marry a robot ! :lol2:

But to say women who have moved on to new gender render roles enjoy sexual harassment (that is the expression to use; the word eve-teasing trivializes the issue) is offensive.

Well said. That is their fundamental right.
Adultery/Divorce etc are different issues which shouldnt be confused with living-together.

It is for the purposes of property rights (inheritance) that there is a need for law to bothers to recognize marriage. But even there I don't get why law should be concerned with adultery, except for accepting it as reasonable grounds for divorce. Adultery as a punishable offence beats me.

As long as nobody gets hurt What if I feel "hurt" by moral outrage ? :lol2:

Jokes apart, let's chew on this for a minute - hurt is so difficult to define.

Apart from physical hurt, causing psychological trauma (eg. threats, ) is a punishable offence - we'd be ready agree with that.

What about 'public decency' - that ever changing cultural thing where standards are progressively 'lowered'. How would one react ? The streaker is a regular in these arguments - and I am surprised he hasn't made an appearance thus far. :-)

And this is my favourite: what about "Hurting religious sentiments" - there we may get slightly cat-on-the-wall. Responses will range from "it's a free country, grow some skin" to "தவிர்த்திருக்கலாம்", "வருத்தத்துக்குரியது" to "கண்டனத்துக்குரியது".

In many places the charges center around 'likely to incite violence'. Note: this is not necessarily linked to actual acts of violence, but presumption that it may lead to. That means the incitability of the people is also taken into account, isn't it ?!

So as people become more balanced (or 'permissive' based on how one sees it !) previous offences no longer are offences ! Rather than being set in stone on these issues, the law changes - which can be understandably unsettling. We law as the cornerstone with reference to which society operates but in many cases there is a feedback loop.

Does 'advances' mean harassment? Nowhere does the question of harassment arise- in this discussion about premarital sex and living together arrangements which the Supreme Court has glibly advocated in the court of law! I mentioned the bus incident of having body guards in our days to answer the light dismissal alleged for such acts now. It IS shocking and saddening to me to see women wanting male attention! whoever talked about 'piRar manai nOkkaamai' and 'sEl akaRRiya maathar' must be turning in their graves!

The reversal of gender roles do definitely disturb me. Home is the domain of the woman is my strong belief. Like in the quote, 'God is in his heaven and all is well with the world' when woman is in in the home all is well with the world.

Thanks for educating me: after same sex marriage what could follow is marriage with robots!

Live and let live. As long as nobody gets hurt & human rights not violated, then it's cool. Peace :D

Our youth are averse to lifelong commitments is the fact. Marriage comes with the tagline, 'until death doth part us' whereas living together has for tagline, 'until another interesting partner doth part us'!
What a pity the concept of human rights can get twisted to all our selfish, sensual inclinations! :( Individuals make the society, nation, world. Their personal decisions do have a bearing on the whole texture of human existence. Very perverse, wrong notions of personal freedom/rights have been in vogue for long.
