Famous singer JIKKI passes away!

Topic started by SK (@ 199.90.34.67) on Mon Aug 16 11:24:48 EDT 2004.

With profound grief, let me record the sad news of Ms. JIKKI's passing away today after a prolonged battle with cancer. She has sung over 10,000 songs and have been part of that memorable AM RAJA-JIKKI combo for over 3 decades.
"thuLLaadha manamum thuLLum" is still a song green in our memories.
I express my hearty condolences to the bereaved family.
May her soul rest in peace.

"mayakkum maalai pozhudhe nee po po" is an immortal song by jikki.
Also some of her last few songs like
"ninaithadhu yaaro nee thaane"
"naan sirithaal deepavali" with IR are unforgettable.

TFM has lost a precious nightingale. I had the privelege of meeting her a few years back, and her humility and innocence was a delightful surprise. May her soul rest in peace.

Here is one cherished classic- immensely popular in its time, one among Jikki's gems from the 50s:

Jikki's passing away is really sad. She is one of the immortals of TFM and had a long and successful career until P. Suseela, TMS, MSV (with and without TKR) became the de facto standards in TFM in the sixties. Her voice was a little nasal - but a very sweet voice.

I can never understand why a proven singer like Jikki (or her husband, A.M. Raja) just fades away after a while. It is not because of old age reducing her skills or anything like that.

May her soul rest in peace.

Jikki is a great singer. I think she has got this special 'huskiness' to her voice which makes it all the more special and unique. I think most of the songs sung by her are great ones! As Mr.Saravanan had said, inspite of her fame, she was very humble and polite till the end.

Though people might consider her as a light music singer, she proved her skills in classical rendition as well (in the Telugu version of 'Thesulaavudhe...').

I pray that her soul rests in peace and that her wonderful songs remain amidst us forever!

Btw, "Naan Sirithaal Deepavali" was by Rajeswari and Jamuna Rani.

I listen to her songs almost every day. It is like one of the family members had passed away. She and AMR are among the best singers TFM ever had. May her soul RIP.
BTW which is her first tamil song? Is it `Arul Thaarum Theva Maatha" from Gnanasoundari or "Minnalai pole en kathal rajan" from Kaithi? Or anything else?

May her soul rest in peace ..

She should have got much more recognition.. In "Times of India " Bangalore edition, her demise is mentioned in a small column that too in 4th or 5th page. I really felt bad .. She was equally famous in all southern languages in 50's.
other than her movie songs she is very famous in the xian community for her devotional songs..
U must hear the " rajasekara " from the film "anArkali" with ghantasala.

aruL thaarum dheva maadhaave aadhiye inba jothiye aadhiye inba jothi

A Classic Singer .. Whose songs are immortal..

Being the wife of renowned singer and MD A.M.Raja she was down to earth person.

yesterday E TV re-telecasted her interview and she sang some of her songs in telugu.

Raja sekara - Anarkali
Hayi Hayiga aamani - (thesulavudhe in Telugu)

Yes. Jikki is no more. And tamil film music world lost a voice permanently to the oblivion. But the vibrations created by her would be enthralling the music afficiandoes for many a years to come.

Thunbakkadalaith thaandumpothu thoNiyaavathu geetham
saintha payirum neeraikkandaal thogai virithey padarnthidum

The advising nature of the Pattukkottai's song but rendered with a soft penetrating touch would melt my heart on any day.

Mayakkum malai pozhuthey nee po po!
Inikkum inba nilave nee vaa vaa!

paaloottum nilavu then oottumey!
paadum thendral thaalaattumey!

The lilt in her voice as she calls the night in the raga bageswari will be rekindling the magic of her world ever.

rajasekara! nee modi seyyalaagumaa!
kannnil vandhu minnal pol kaanuthey!

She started her singing career when she was thirteen! Mandirikumari was her first film under the great G Ramanathan.

I wish the forum starts the discussion on her and pay homage to the departed soul in a rich way that she deserves.

G. Krishnaveni, Jikki is a great soul and I am sure her soul is now in peace. She was a good singer and a nice human being. Her voice can be modulated in any length and breadth, as required by the MD. She is good in almost 5 languages that she sang, namely Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi. I think she can read and write in all these languages. Her main strength of singing during 50s and 60s was her ease in language finer details. Probably MD S Venkatraman was her mentor in earlier days, though G Ramanathan used her in movies nicely like Tukuthooki, Uttamaputhirana and Manthrikumari. In SV's music Jikki's voice has more variety- Manohara's Inba nalithe (a high pitch fast paced song with big chorus- LRE's first main chorus voice). Once Jikki in her interview told that LV Prasad director and SV, MD wanted this song to be recorded in two hours or something like that for Kumari Kamala with Natarajan. It was taught by SV to Jikki in 10 minutes and recorded in two hours. That was her talent.

Though her solo songs are good, I like her duets or groups songs. The combination of TMS and Jikki is my favourite. Kannil vandu minnal pol from Nadodimannan is my all time favo. If you MGR movies, the song just before climax will be always fast catching number. In the old movies, many times, he will use Jikki song. SMS subbaiah Naidu in Nadodi mannnan, Echu pillakkum in Madurai veeran (GR), Sarasarani kalyani in Desing Raja (GR), Jigu Jigu in Kathavarayan (GR) and so on.

In her solo, I like Unnai kanN theudthe in KaNavane KaNkaNta theivam for Lalitha. Of course in AM Raja's music, Tullatah manmum is OK. However, it was a remake of Lata Mangeskar song. I like Urengum thedinen in Then Nilavu (AM Raja as MD).
Her duet with JP Chandrabau is also fantastic- Thanthana (Mahadevi) and Jigu Jigu in Kathavarayan. She also sang with SC Krishnan in many hilarious songs like Alibaba, Telugu remake movies songs etc.

Her duet with P.Leela in Vanji Kottai valiban is heartbreaking song and with P. Susheela in uttamaputhiran, CS Jeyaraman in Pudumaipithan and sreekazhi in Tirudathe are memorable.

I thank the almighty for sending such a talented and good soul to the world of Tamil film song.
B.P. Thiagarajan

1. Oh Katti Karumbe: It is from the old movie "Puyal" based on a popular tune from the Hindi movie Deedar. Don't know who the MD is, but KVM retained the same tune when Deedar was remade in Tamil (Neengatha Ninaivu). The audio quality is not great, yet we can enjoy the sweet voice of young Jikki. Another good solo by Jikki in Gulebagavali- En Ashayum for Rajasoulochana and a song for Anjalidevi in Nilamalai tirudan (Devar Films) were also very good.

Jiki's passing is an irrieparable loss to the millions of her fans in general and the cine music industry in particluar. She will always be fondly remembered as one of the greatest singers of South India, created by the handiwork of God.

I chnced to enter into a long conversation with her when she and her son were down in Malaysia for a muscial performance. She mirrored forth some great virtues that very few could possess.

I read her as an embodimetn of humility. My long conversationw ith her was reduced to a series of articles in a local Tamil weekly, where the readers fathomed greater details of her cine contribution.

Not a day passes without one humming away her songs. We may miss her, but she has to return to be in communion with AM Rajah whom she herself had been missing since his demise in 1989. Let us pray for her soul to attain eeternal happiness an peace in the unseen kingdom on high.

Sriram - For sure, all the three versions of that song are immensely enjoyable, and all the three ladies have sung it with aplomb. Jikki similarly did a very beautiful job in the Telugu film Arudra, wherein she sang the Telugu versions of all the songs of the Hindi film Aah. Music was by Shankar and Jaikishan.

The following site has some Telugu gems by the veteran chanteuse:

Jikki is one of my favorite singers, too. She could sing vampish songs, love songs, songs with pathos, and classical songs, all with great ease and style. Though she faded to the background after the late '60s, she still came out with gems even in the '70s, '80s, '90s and even in the 2000s. I had the fortune of listening to her and her husband A. M. Raja at a wedding concert in the '80s, and they were both in fine form. One of my favorite song of hers is "KaNNa MaraiyAdEDA" from the movie "Pennin Perumai" ("Vaddura Kannaiya" from "Ardhangi" in Telugu). It's indeed sad that she's not with us anymore, but her voice will always be fondly remembered by many. It would be wonderful if someone makes a compilation of all the songs of this great singer available to future generations of music lovers, and to all of us fans as well. Thank you Jikki, for all these years of joyous listening that you provided to us!

While a lot of you won't like this point I am about to make, the focus of this thread is yet another cold and hard reminder that everyone who is born must eventually die. Someday, Ilayaraja will pass away, SP Balasubramaniam will pass away, Rajnikanth, KS Chitra, AR Rahman, Mu. Mehta, Prabhu, Swarnalatha, Devayani, Simran, KJ Yesudas, Dhanush, and every other actor, composer and singer, and even PURV will someday die.

Saravanan: I posted Yeru pootti povaaye from memory and listening to an old recording. Some words may be wrong. It is not Tanjore Tamil. Otherwise, I would have figured it out! Your help with the detail is greatly appreciated. I have not sung or listened to this song in four plus decades!:)
The song applies to the conditions prevalent in Tamilnadu even today!

It is interesting to note that Yeru putti povaye is for Wahheda Rehman (Hindi fame). Jikki sang another song in Alibaba for Waheeda Rehman- Salam Babu Salam babu ennai parungo.

As compared to PS, Jikki can sing any song in few hours due to her capacity to pick up the language. During those periond most of MDs concenrated teaching more on music notes than the langauge teachings. For PS MDs have to spend more time for language than Jikki. So most of them preferred Jikki. Also she was not at all a complicated personality and Jikki was an amicable person always.

It is indeed a sad news.. my heart feels heavy.. even though every person born in the world has to die one day (?!??) there are some people whose death will do something to your heart. Jikki was such a lovely singer, who, unlike some contemporaries of hers didnt get as many chances in the last 15 years or so, which she richly deserved. I dont know what her last song is.. but the last song I heard and it is famous is "Vanna Vanna Solleduthu" from Sentamizh Paattu.. What a lovely song!!! That one, sung about 12 years ago, was pure melody, with Jikki's voice sounding like a very young lady's. It is appropriate, as she sings the slow part of the song,

Naanum Indha Boomiyil
Neela nadhi pOlavE
Nadandhiduvenn engeyum......

sure.. she might not be alive now.. but she will be there in our hearts..

Film: Kaalam Maaripochchu (1956/Sarathi Films)
Lyrics: Mugavai Rajamanickam
Music: Master Venu

Kaalam Maaripochu starred Gemini Ganesh, Anjali Devi, T.S.Baliah, S.V.Subbiah, Thangavelu & others. Waheeda Rehman appeared for this song.
Dialogues were also by Mugavai Rajamanickam.
The film was directed by Thaapi Chanakya.

The film was a remake of Thaapi Chankya's Telugu hit Rojulu Maaraayi (1955). The Telugu original starred Nageswara Rao & Sowcar Janaki. The Tamil songs were in the same tunes set for Rojulu Maaraayi.

The Telugu equivalent of 'yeru pooti povaaye' was 'yeruvaka saagaloi', also sung by Jikki. Waheeda Rehman had appeared in the Telugu song as well.

G.Ramanathan adapated the same tune for his 'summa irundhaal sOthukku nashtam’..uNmaiyOdu uzhaikkaNum thaanE thannanna (P.Leela & Jikki/Udumalai Narayana Kavi) for Madurai Veeran (also 1956/ Krishna Pictures)

S.D.Burman adapted the tune for his Bombay Ka Babu (1960/ Naya films/ Dev Anand & Suchitra Sen)- ‘dekhne mein bhola hai, dil ka salona, bombai se aaya hai, babu chinnanna’ (Asha Bhosle/ Majrooh)

Interestingly, some years back, when I was discussing these various adaptations of the same tune with a Telugu speaking friend, his father, who was sitting quietly till then, looked at me amusedly and said that the original was not even ‘yeruvaka saagaloi’, but a vintage HMV record of Telugu folk songs by a composer called Jaganath Rao, and he even sang the song, which, as far as I can recall went ‘cheedikki maadikki!’

The tune seemed to have caught the fancy of so many composers!

Dear Saravanan,

Almost a book can be written on the song "Eruvaaka saagaarOy" covering all kinds of discussions that had taken place on the same.

Your friend's father is correct, for the tune was 'based' on age old Telugu folk tune: #ayyO koyyODaa..#, recorded by Valloori Jagannaadham in late 1920s. He was a big name in singing folk songs. But, it may not be 'his' tune, but a 'traditional' one. The exact song refered by your friend's father is: #cheeTiki maaTiki chiTTemmanTaav, china naayuDunTaDu, peda naayuDunTadu chiTTemmaa ani pilavakarO ayyO koyyODaa! ...# These lyrics was sung by Jikki and the famous Comedian actror-cum-singer Kasturi Sivarao (who was in late 40s and early 50s as popular as NSK in TN!) in film: #Srii lakshamma katha# (1950, Music: CR Subburaaman).

Then came Master Venu with his tune in 1955. Apart from the tune, Waheeda's appearance and introducing the traditional instrument: #Dappu# (~drum) Kosaraju Raaghavayya's lyrics contributed enormously to the great popularity of this song.

Now, to the controversies ... When the same tune was used in #madurai veeran#, HMV filed a suit in a Madras court for plagiarizing the 'tune'. Though it had been a common practice until then, it was for the first time some one raised an objection.
Then entered the well known (folk) singing stars: Sita and Anasuya (folk song in (middle class) Telugu circles is synonymous with their names!) who claimed it to be their 'tune' for they recorded #koyyO koyyODaa ...# years earlier. Anyway, the court's ruling went against HMV people, at that time.

Well, the discussion was re-rolled in 1990s ...

Saravanan: Thanks for the corrections and the history. I didn't realize there was so much behind that song! After I posted the lyrics I tried all possibilities with mEn-i. I think it is mEzhi meaning plough. I did not expect that word in that song. It should be 'mezhiya nilathil thaazha ' meaning 'hold the plough down'! I remember this well. During my summer visits to my ancestral village, I used to get the honor of initiating the farming season by starting the ploughing first. The plough handle was as tall as me. Somebody used to hold my hand and the plough handle to make sure it did not slip and hit the bulls!:) Those were the days!
Thanks again. I will think about the next song.

Dear Sreenivas, thanks a lot for that enriching post. I wonder why HMV didn't make any objection to Master Venu using the tune! Or did he take their permission to do so?

Saravanan,
I have no words to explain my profound feelings for the way by which you touch so many peoples' memory lane with your write-ups!
This particular song took me to 1956{!!!}. It was a remote south Indian town called Sankarankoil. I was 7 1/2 yrs old by then! We were very enthusiastically celebrating the sivaraathri with a whole night program of songs and dances in the neighborhood. There was no TV or any other sort of other diversions! The girl who was supposed to be our main dancer in a group dance for this song as the main number was denied permission from their house at the last minute! We were crest-fallen and didn't know what to do! My uncle's son who was visiting me at that time saw our plight and offered his services! He dressed like a girl with 'seetti paavadai' and donned a 'kuRaththi' sort of make up with the kunkumam paste used as lip-stick! He took this 'Jaalraa', [the round disc with tin rounds in pairs on the sides, which will make a nice collective musical sound when shaken rhythmically!] in his hands and mesmerized the street crowd with his excellent choreography and dancing skills. All along, people thought that the dancer was a girl[we kept this as a secret till the last minute!] and when finally they all came to know, the claps they made were so loud that I can still hear them! Thank you for making me to recall all these sweet memories with this one song!! THANK YOU, JIKKI!!

BTW, I am not very sure if the Radio and private FM channels in Madras honored Jikki by airing her songs. I say this because my friend from Madras told me that none of the radio stations aired even a single of Jikki! And he went on to add, "idhellam andha north indians-kudhaan varum oru artist-a eppadi paaraatanumndradhu". I was a bit sad about it. But I wish this were not true.

There are many songs of Jikki that I have relished for her ease of singing and she always excelled in aalaapanais and gamakkams...which were so emphatic and pronounced.

Raj had sent an old telugu song a few days ago sung by the trio Jikki, Suseela and Janaki: "Venu ganaammu vinipinchene". One must admit after hearing that Jikki tops the score in the rendition of this song, followed by Janaki and then...PS.

(duet with Trichy Lokanathan)

This song always reminds me of that summer I spent in my mother's ancestral village. I think the movie Manthirikumaari was released when I was in seventh standard (known as second form in those days). That summer I heard this song in the village from one of my distant (and rustic) uncles. He had a habit of singing in the night after dinner (supper?). In the quiet of the night the song would drift through the entire street. He also sang 'aruL thaarum dheva maadhaavae' from Gnanasoundhari. Later that summer I saw that movie in a touring talkies which was quite an experience. Last time I visited the village, there was a memorial for him at the entrance to the street. What came to my mind was this song! I think it was Thomas Gray who wrote about people like my uncle!

Saravanan: I think I have the lyrics right! About Manthirikumaari?

Raj/SK, I listened to the song and noticed that it is ViNNilai, and not viNNInai.

Other details:

Mandhirikumari (1950/ Modern Theatres)
Music: G.Ramanathan
Lyrics: A.Maruthakasi

The film was based on the epic kuNdalakEsi. Screenplay & Dialogues were by M.Karunanidhi.
The film was jointly directed by Ellis Duncan & T.R.Sundaram.

This song is filmed on Parthiban (S.A.Natarajan), who plans to push Amudhavalli (Madhuri Devi) from the cliff, and so leads her up the mountain. Another lovely song filmed on the same pair ( and sung by the same singers) is 'ulavum thendRal kaatRinilE'.

Most CDs/ cassettes credit the lyrics to Maruthakasi, but I clearly remember listening to Vividh Bharathi announcements (in the late 70s) giving joint credit to Ka.Mu.Sheriff and Maruthakasi for this song, and used to wonder how one song could be jointly written by two lyricists!

Interestingly, while writing on Ka.Mu.Sheriff (Kumudam Junction), Vaali too mentions that all the songs of Mandhirikumari were jointly written by Maruthakasi & Sheriff, and that this was a record.

Raj,
This is one of my favorite songs. Pl. note that the 'kaadhalan' is contradicting all the nice things the 'kaadhali' points out. Fed up with him, she says where did you learn to speak like this [kudharkkam], for which also, he says that it is from your eyes, meaning that your eyes are very inviting but you don't allow me when I approach you! excellent lyrics.
There is a similar song by the TL&SJ in ivan avanEthaan which starts like this.::
"vAzhkkaiyin paadam
kooRidum Odam
Odum singaaram
paar kaalai nEram"
Here the 'kaadhali' contradicts everything the 'kaadhalan' says and that too scientifically! Brilliant lyrics by one 'villiputhan'
Enough of digression.
'app_engine', I am in the 50's but will eventually reach the 60's in future!!:)

Hi folks, sorry to hear the death of jikki. Can we have another singer with her unique voice, i doubt. my fav jikki song is from the film 'kangal'
"paadi paadi thedinalum avan paadam kaana mudiyathu, eesan paadam kaana mudiyathu", the sweetness in her voice in this song was not
matched later. It was an outstanding song. She
goes to high pitch "karpulla maadargal" in the
middle without any 'shruti bedam'. Simply outstanding.
She and raja have given us immortal melodies.
RIP

It is 'paadi paadi 'dhinam' thEdinaalum'!
Favorite song of my elder sisters!
Again some more nostalgia.
This took me back to ythe 60's when I was the 'male' escort [to collect&carry all the sundal packets and kunguma chimizh]!] for my two elder sisters during the Navaratri rounds in Trichy.["app_engine", I think I am revealing too much info.on me,I think!!] In all the houses they visited on all the 9 days for the "kolu", they will sing only this song, repeatedly! I sort of got to memeorize this song just by listening to them singing!! Profound meaning, again, with the lyrics. I would say that this very well ould be the inspiration for KKD when he wrote "idhO yendhan deivam munnaaalE" in Babu, for NadigarThilakam.
Thanks, "S.ramaswamy".

Raj, only minor corrections:

theLindha neerai pondRa thooya kaadhal

ulaga vaazhkkai aatrinilae kaadhal enum thoNidhanil oorndhu selluvom

As SK mentioned, it is a lilting song with interesting lyrics. The ease with which the teenaged Jikki sang the song is simply amazing!
As a child, I remember my mother's aunt singing this song. She passed away in 1978, and today I thought of her after ages!

The song was also the first song in the history of Tamil Cinema to be filmed entirely in the natural moonlight. It was filmed on S.A.Natarajan & Madhuri Devi in the Yercaud Lake.

SK, thanks for reminding me of 'vaazhkaiyin paadam'. (Its paar maalai nEram, btw). The realistic explanations given by SJ to the romantic flights of TL's imagination are a joy to hear, and TL's exclamations of annoyance at the end of the charanams are so amusing!

I am glad I did not post it with the mistakes. I made up some words I forgot.
Every December we host a music party at our home. 'kalyana oorvalam' and 'brindhaavanamum' are staple songs that I sing with my North Indian friends who sing the Hindi equivalent- jugalbandi of sorts! One year a friend asked me for this song, the equivalent of 'sunte thi naam' I knew a few lines and had to make up some!:) Thanks for the song! I will post the lyrics later.

In 'Venuganammu' PS' delivery is one of her usual styles. But Jikki's voice is so mature, expressive and beautiful. And Janaki though she sings a few lines, it comes as a fresh breeze.

Speaking of Jikki, I always loved the flow with which she sings an alaapanai or gammakkam. TheLLath theLivaa vizha vendiya idathil thidamaaga vizhum and ofcourse, her thuLLum voice!

There's a couple of very old songs that I can't totally recall:

1. kalavaada iravu, oLi veesa nilavu....idhilenna pudumai.

2. A movie based song on Lord Krishna. There could be many but I will know whihc one I mean only when I hear it:-))

I am still not able to digest that her death went unnoticed by the music world. Have the people of Tamil Nadu or rather the radio/TV show hosts/ sponsors become so insensitive? This only goes to prove that the tamil cinema world is indeed a "nandri ketta cinema ulagam". Please throw some light on this if I am wrong.

Regarding the Chellappillai song, the villain is T.K. Ramachandran and T.S. Balaiah is the hormonium player and in the middle of the song, TSB will stop playing when TKR whips the floor with a whip[duh!]at which, a frightened TSB will utter hastily "mmm.. vaasiikirEn, vaasikkirEn" and will start playing again.
Breezy, fast-paced song!

Hello K:
Could the Krishna based movie song by Jikki be "Kanna maraiyadeda" from Pennin Perumai? It's set in Kaapi raga, and Jikki has done a terrific job. I have not been able to get it anywhere online. I do have the movie on VHS, and if I can figure out a way to convert it to an audio file, I'll post it sometime. Sivaji Ganesan, Gemini Ganesh and Savitri are in the movie, with Gemini Ganesh playing a simpleton and Sivaji playing his villainous brother. Savitri is tricked into marrying Gemini Ganesh, but she molds Gemini Ganesh into a literate, civilized person, and stands up to Sivaji to defend her husband. Anther Jikki song from this movie is "MuhUrta nAlum vandAchA, mUkanAnkayirum pottAchA". The telugu version of KannA maraiyAdedA", which is "vaddura kannaiya" was posted by another fan earlier as a tribute to the versatile Jikki.

I listened to 'jalaku jalaku' once again. While most of the lines are right, I decipher a few lines as:

naadum kalyaNa peNN paadum ullaasa paNN

paal(?) nilavodu vaan #iNai# saerndhadhudhaan

(and I'm not able to figure out the 'paal' part either, it sounds to me as 'maa nilvOdu'- but that doesn't make sense. Perhaps it is 'vaan nilavOdu' after all?)

"Very successful movie. Kalyana oorvalam varum song of Jikki is very popular other than Jalak jalak.Rajkapur & Nargis movie? SK, Please thank your sister on my behalf. I am glad to know that the Tamil version was also a success. Perhaps the beautiful songs played a major role in its success!

And I too had a vague memory of a happy ending, but Raj had written that it had a tragic end. But a search for the synopsis also showed that it had a happy ending. So I was perplexed. Perhaps it was your sister says, and the ending was changed later!

Raj, I have this song in a cassette of Ghantasala songs that I recorded long back. The lyrics are perfect!

From what I had jotted in the cassette sleeve, I guess this song is from Pudhu Yugam, though I am not not wholly certain about it.

Pudhuyugam (1954/ Sri Sai Ganamrutha Pictures) was produced by G.Ramanathan himself!

It starred Narasimha Bharathi, Krishnakumari, S.A.Natarajan and others. Story & Dialogues were by Ka.Mu.Sheriff.

Raj, sorry for this belated response.

The HMV cassette of Devadas credits 'O Devadas' to K.Rani, but I too feel it is Jikki. Rani has sung the other duet with Ghantasala 'uRavum illai pagaiyum illai', and also the solo 'ellaam maayai thaana'.

Details for today's song:

Film: sugam engE (1954/ Modern Theatres)
Music: Viswanathan- Ramamoorthi
Lyrics: Kannadasan
Actors: K.R.Ramasami & Savitri

Raj, my favorite song from the film is the other KRR/Jikki duet 'senthamizh naattu sOlaiyilE sindhu paadithiriyum poonkuyilE'. Jikki's opening humming sets the tone for this caressing song!

Raj, glad to see you back in action :)

And thanks for the lyrics of this song, among my fav. SCK songs!

Details:

enga veettu mahalakshmi (1957/Annapoorna Pictures) was A.Nageswara Rao's own production.
It was a bilingual based on Sarat Chandra's Bengali story Nishkruthi. The Telugu version was Todi Kodallu. The film starred Nageswara Rao and Savitri. Adurthi Subba Rao directed both versions. The Tamil dialogues were written by Sridhar.

Music was by Master Venu.

Raj, your above sentence "was another telugu film Ma inti mahalakshmi too" is little misleading for me. At least, till mid-1990s (after that I don't know) theres only one Telugu film with that title, and that from 1959. Also, PBS had only one song (a duet with PS) and PS had one solo. But, Jikki's 2 solos and her duet with Ghantasala are better known. Equally, rather more popular is PNR's solo. Also, check for RBS' duet with PS VaidEhi, an AIR staff artist, who sang few good songs in late 50s and early 60s. You find 7 songs from this film at www.oldtelugusongs.com

Raj, thanks for posting the lyrics of this classic song tuned by T.R.Papa.

Film: Anbu (1953/ Natesh Art Pictures)
Lyrics: Ka.Mu.Sheriff

Anbu was produced by M.Natesan, who subsequently made films like Aasai(1956), Mannathi Mannan (1960) and En Kadamai(1964).

It was directed by T.R.Ramanna, and his sister T.R.Rajakumari acted in a pivotal role. She even sang a song 'anbE deiveegam'.

This song featured Sivaji & Padmini.

According to TRP, it was Sivaji who wished for a sequence featuring him playing the piano, and accordingly TRP begins the song with wonderful piano notes.

Wow, Raj! Kalakkunga! What is the book about, or is it a secret for the time being? All the Best!

Btw, I gave up on coolgoose long back :(

Kannil vandhu minnal pol was written by Suradha.

Reg. the film, I am copying what I had posted sometime back :

Emgeeyaar Pictures (P) Ltd’s Nadodi Mannan, (released on August 22nd 1958) was produced and directed by MGR himself. Prior to its release, MGR is said to have mused aloud that its success would make him a ‘Mannan’, while a failure would render him a ‘Nadodi’. However multiple factors like MGR’s charisma, the appealing story loosely based on the popular English classic ‘If I were King’, developed by’ Emgeeyaar Pictures Kadhai Ilaka’ (comprising of people like Raveendar, Vidwan Lakshmanan, RMV), scintillating dialogues (Kannadasan & Raveendar), excellent songs by SM Subbiah Naidu, the color scenes catching the viewers by surprise in the second half, the presence of a talented cast including three heroines- Bhanumathi, MN Rajam & Sarojadevi (this was her first major role in Tamil), all worked together to ensure an unprecedented success (25 weeks), and MGR was well on his way to becoming the monarch of mainstream Tamil Cinema. MGR was presented a gold sword in a grand function at Madurai, and also bagged the Cinema Kadhir Award for the best director.

Saravanan: Thanks! The book is about the crisis in American Higher Education. As you probably gathered from different threads where I posted, I worked in the industry for a long time and retired to take up teaching. To my dismay, I found the system to have degraded considerably compared to the time I arrived here for higher education in 1965. I decided to write about it. First, I have to sharpen my writing skills. I am in the first phase - jotting notes. In this country a typical research oriented university neglegts the undergraduate students. The book is about undergraduate education. Nothing secret about it. I have retired from teaching and have time to do it. There is a publisher who wants me to write a text book. I am not sure I will go for that. Cheers!

For starters, NaadOdi mannaan was the precursor for movies like 'Mudhalvan' and similar 'orunaaL raajaa' stories!!
A truly enjoyable movie in every way!
Bhanumathi was supposed to carry thru the entire film and due to some rift between her and MGR, the storyline was changed and SarOjadevi got the break and the rest is history. She went on to be MGR's permenant heroine for several years untill Jayalalitha came in, in 'aayiraththil oruvan'!
and that is the 'rrrrrrrrest of the story' as Paul Harvey would say it!

Raj, I am sure your book will be a meticulous, well-researched effort. My best wishes!

As I told you, I too have stopped trying to struggle with coolgoose. But I think I have the song in my collection. I will locate it and upload it in yahoo briefcase soon.

If I remember right this is the only song that Jikki sang in Akbar (1961). The song is a Jikki, PS & chorus song, which goes like 'undhan sabaiyil endhan vidhiyai' with the refrain 'rajavE naanum paarpEnE'. The Hindi original goes like 'teri mehfil mein kismat aazmakar' (Lata & Shamshad Begum). Music by Naushad. Listening to Jikki soar in higher octaves in this song is a wonderful experience!

Interestingly when Anjali Devi made the bilingual Anarkali (based on the same story) in 1955, Jikki had all the songs, save one which went to PS! A reversal of roles in Akbar 6 years later.

Although I cannot claim that my version of `Unthan Sabayil’ is a better quality, I have uploaded in my Yahoo briefcase as per your request. I converted the song from audio cassette into mp3 format, so here and there some distortions do occur.
BTW, your version is six minutes long, this one only 4.5 minutes. May be yours is the movie version. I will try to fix your version, if I succeed, I will post it again.

Raj,
Try this link for Unthan Sabayil from Akbar. Please rename the extension of the file as mp3 from jpg once downloaded. It should work. Sorry for the delay.

It'll be nice if you can add links to the posts that contain the lyrics, in the song list. As an example, I've done it for 'naadagamellaam kanden'. See above.

RR: I will do as time permits! The songs are listed in the order posted.

madhu: The movie is 'avaL yaar'. Jikki sings with Raja.
I do not know who the MD and lyricists were! :) When you post a song give it the serial number ( #31 for the last song ) and also make sure the song is not repeated. :)
