Profile

An attacking player with a cool head, Virat Kohli has already earned a reputation as a level-headed and mature cricketer. Batting at his favourite No. 4 position, he has a penchant for converting his fifties into big scores, as he showed in 2005 when he single-handedly took Delhi from 70 for 4 to a first-innings lead with 251 off 431 balls against Himachal Pradesh in the Under-17 championships. Kohli made his first-class debut for Delhi in the 2006-07 Ranji Trophy and in January 2008 was named captain of the Indian U-19 squad for the 2008 World Cup. He contributed 235 runs and became the second Indian U-19 captain to bring home the World Cup as he led India's unbeaten campaign in Malaysia. He was included in India's squad for the one-day series in Sri Lanka in August 2008 and the Champions Trophy to follow in Pakistan. Kohli was handed a debut in the opening match of the Sri Lanka series as a replacement for the injured Virender Sehwag, and finished the five-match contest as the fourth-highest run-getter with 159.

Virat Kohli has now scored 50 or more in four consecutive innings. Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid are the only Indians who have managed more - five. The overall record, a whopping nine, belongs to one of the finest one-day batsmen ever, Javed Miandad.

Kohli brings versatility to India

He can bat high or low. If the selectors could pick the World Cup 15 today, there are question marks only against the second spinner, fourth seamer and eighth batsman

Harsha Bhogle

December 3, 2010

Barring what those who draft contracts call "an act of God", Virat Kohli has sealed his place in India's World Cup squad. He has shown a calm head and a solid temperament, qualities for long considered a challenge for him, and by embracing them has revealed his ambition. Hitherto a temper and an ego, both dreadful cancers, were thought of as his best friends. Hopefully they have been shown the door. With the possible exception of Suresh Raina, no young Indian player has done more in the last two years. A Test place will soon beckon and, like with Cheteshwar Pujara, I believe he is ready. The challenge from the fast short-pitched ball is still to be encountered but that is part of the finishing process.

For now, though, the Kohli story is about batting in limited-overs cricket and he has shown his versatility; batting at No. 3 in 50-overs cricket and as a finisher for the Royal Challengers. As much as he is impressive at No. 3, it was his ability to play the fiery innings at the death in the Champions League that caught the eye. It means he can bat wherever the side needs him and it is this versatility that could put him in the playing XI in the World Cup even after all the stars return.

It would be tempting, given his performances this year, to give him his due and present him with the No. 3 slot, but Gautam Gambhir has a claim on that position as well, and as we saw in Jaipur, he paces an innings remarkably well. So Kohli can play the role of the finisher, with him and Raina at Nos. 6 and 7. Alternately of course, if either Tendulkar or Sehwag has to miss a game, Gambhir moves up and Kohli can slip into No. 3. There is a fluidity to the batting order that gives it strength, and with the allrounder at no. 7 still elusive, seven batsmen looks like the way to go. It will be a batting line-up to rival, or indeed even to outshine, any other team in Indian conditions.

Well as Kohli has played - and remember he also makes India a better fielding side - there is another equally significant event that has tended to slip under the radar. India have played four bowlers in both games so far and Yuvraj Singh has picked up three wickets at under five an over from his 19 overs. Each time, the captain has preferred him to Yusuf Pathan, making it clear who he regards as the allrounder in the side. If India can get six overs out of Yuvraj in every game - and anything more can be a bonus - he provides the balance that India have been looking for over the last 12 months.

And in doing so he not only negates the need for a Ravindra Jadeja, or indeed even a Yusuf Pathan, who is the more effective batsman of the two, but also ensures that Kohli comes into the side. It is a balance that will work better in subcontinental conditions than, say, in South Africa, where you want a top-order batsman to bowl seam-up. But with the World Cup being the focus, it makes the selectors' job much easier.

In fact, with two and a half months to go, India's World Cup squad looks settled in spite of the player rotation that you see. And over the next three games, and the form that players show in South Africa, the remaining four spots can be filled. There is the little, often irrelevant, issue of naming 30 players, but really, India could name the final 15 today with the selectors taking a call on the fourth seamer, second spinner and eighth batsman.

I believe there is still the comfort factor of having a Pathan in the side in Indian conditions and that means R Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha fight it out for the second spinner's slot. Given that Ashish Nehra and Praveen Kumar have done enough, it's going to be a job choosing between Ishant Sharma, Sreesanth and the quietly effective Munaf Patel for the last seamer's place. And if India do indeed commit to the seven-batsmen route, as seems likely, they will need a back-up; ideally someone who can play the role of a finisher from No. 7, and I suspect it could come down to Saurabh Tiwary or even Rohit Sharma.

There is still a long time to go for that World Cup, and much water can flow under the bridge, but Kohli and Yuvraj have started filling troublesome spots.

This Puture Captain thingy is a very big jinx. Just a look at some of the names which had been talked up as Future Captains:

Kaif (enough said)
Yuvi (was on the brink of captaincy around 2006/07 and more or less downhill since then)
Raina (After going to Zim as captain pretty much downhill)
and hold your breath - Dinesh Karthik (since it was Greg Chappell not sure it counts)

So it would be better if Kohli can ignore the Future Captain raves and concentrate on batting IMO.

Is Kohli world’s best ODI batter?
Avijit Ghosh TNN

New Delhi: If it is Mission Impossible, dial Virat Kohli. When the 23-year-old from west Delhi bats these days, no bridge seems too far and no target too big. Twice in the space of three weeks, he has almost single-handedly achieved the near-impossible for India.

On Sunday, Kohli’s 183 off 148 balls against Pakistan helped India record its highest ever run chase of 330 with 2.1 overs to spare. “Bura na mano Kohli hai,” went around an SMS as he raged like a storm in Mirpur. The pun was on Holi, but Kohli batted as if it was Diwali. The cricketing fireworks turned into real fireworks nationwide after India triumphed.

Last month at Hobart, his 133 off 86 balls helped overhaul Sri Lanka’s 320 with 13.2 overs to spare. That afternoon, too, Kohli made batting look like a walk in the park. It’s been that way for a while. This year his overall ODI average stands at a mind-boggling 73 and the strike rate is 97. Last year, he was the world’s highest scorer in ODIs and the second-highest the year before. It doesn’t get any better than this.

Undoubtedly, Kohli is the hottest ODI batsman on the planet. But is he the best too? That’s what the statistics seems to suggest, especially when compared to the other batting greats at a similar stage — 85 games — of their respective careers. Consider this. None of the following — Brian Lara, Ricky Ponting, Dean Jones, M S Dhoni, Michael Bevan, and even Sachin Tendulkar and Vivian Richards — had better records than Kohli at this stage.

After 85 games, Kohli has scored 11 centuries. Nobody comes close; Lara (5) and Pointing (5) being next. In this illustrious bunch, Kohli’s overall strike rate 86.31 is third only to Dhoni’s 96.26 and Richards’s 86.99 at the same stage. And his average (50.56) is second only to Bevan’s 56.54. It isn’t just the runs he has scored; it is also the manner in which he has fetched them. Out of his 11 centuries, 10 have come in winning causes; seven of them in a run chase. Thanks to him, run chases are no longer nervous affairs for India. And he seems to shun last over heroics; Kohli prefers to finish early and in style.

BETTER THAN THE BEST?
Virat Kohli has scored more runs than Brian Lara, Dean Jones, Ricky Ponting, Michael Bevan, MS Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar, Viv Richards after the same number of games (85 ODIs). At this stage, Kohli has scored 11 centuries. Nobody even comes close, Lara (5) and Ponting (5) being next. Among them, Kohli’s strike rate 86.31 is the third only to Dhoni’s 96.26 and Richards’ 86.99. And his average (50.56) is second only to Bevan’s 56.54 Virat’s strokeplay is cultured and slogs are rare.

Only one thing jars: that his celebration seems incomplete without reference to mothers and sisters. Once set, Kohli seems to always be in control. He seems to bring his leadership skills even to batting. His strokeplay is cultured; slogs are rare. There’s plenty of wristwork on display and power too. Kohli prefers to play along the ground but is not averse to the lofted stroke. And he plays the pull with poise. On Sunday, he was the only Indian batsman who read Saeed Ajmal. Barring one delivery that was edged for four, he had an answer to every doosra or teesra that the Pakistan spinner offered.

Before the Australia tour, most experts had put their money on Rohit Sharma as more likely to succeed. Kohli proved them wrong, being the faster adapter and quicker learner. Ever since he made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in August 2008, Kohli has grown and evolved beyond recognition. As an 18-year-old, Kohli came to bat for Delhi on the day his father passed away because his team needed him. He scored 90 and steered his team to safety against Karnataka before he fell to a poor umpiring decision. Even at that age, Kohli stood out for his commitment and rare temperament.

Now, Kohli is many things to many people. For the cricket fan, he is a future India captain. For media managers, he is that special face that can sell a million hairgels and mobile phones. For teenage girls, he is the pin-up of their dreams. Kohli is reaching for the stars and corporates for the chequebook. A year after Sourav Ganguly smashed 183 against Sri Lanka in the 1999 World Cup, he became India’s captain. Dhoni marched to ODI captaincy two years after hitting 183 against Sri Lanka in 2005. After his 183, one wonders what awaits Virat Kohli.

SS, you serious? Sachin started opening the innings only in his 70th innings and he got his 1st 100 in his 79th inns.

He got his 13th 100 in 181st inns hence he is not in the above list. If you take from the time he started opening then 13 100s in 112 innings :notworthy:.

And the 13th 100 is the first 100 he got in 1998 which was his golden year with 9 100s. By the end of 1998 he had 21 100s in 207 innings (138 inns since he started opening) :notworthy: :Beat That:.

IIRC, before 1998 Mark Va, Lara, Anwar and Sachin all had ~12-13 hundreds and there was some tough competition. But by the end of 1998 that particular record turned out to be a no contest :).

ESPNSTAR interview with V Kohli, Excerpts:

Boria Majumdar: From Sydney to Adelaide how do you describe the transformation in Virat Kohli? It was just a matter of weeks but you seem to have progressed to a different level of maturity in those two weeks in January earlier this year. And what has followed seems surreal to say the least.

Virat Kohli: At Sydney I was down and out. You can call it the worst mental state of my career. When we boarded the bus for the airport on the way to Perth I spoke to myself and remember saying that I had seen the worst. I was being written off, was about to get dropped and people were questioning my ability to play Test cricket.

Everything that could go wrong had gone wrong. It was about self-belief. I kept telling myself that the eight hundreds I had scored in international cricket were no flash in the pan. Yes they were in one day matches but hundreds don’t come easy. I closed myself to the outside world and tried to reach a state of mental equilibrium, which I was able to do. I was in a zone where I had shut myself from everything. It worked and I managed to get some runs at Perth.

BM: And Adelaide?

VK: When I went into bat at the Adelaide Oval we had already lost a few wickets and it isn’t a great feeling to go into bat under pressure. However, Perth had given me enough confidence to feel I could stay out there and take the fight to the Australians.

There was a lot of talk in the middle and it was important to show that I wasn’t one who could be bullied. The crowd had targeted me in Sydney and I had learnt my lesson and was extremely determined to stand my ground at Adelaide.

It was important to demonstrate that we had gone to play some real serious cricket and were no pushovers. I am glad I was able to do so and that hundred I must say changed everything for me.

BM: Lets focus on what is at hand Virat. There is so much talk about the Indians not playing to the spirit of the game by not giving the English, good spinners to play against in Mumbai. I am aware that you believe giving them turners is the right thing to do in the Test matches but I am interested in knowing your thoughts on these tactics?

VK: I think we have done the right thing. No one says a word when we are on an away tour and similar tactics are employed against us. We never complain if you remember.

I think it is clearly pressure telling on the English that they have started to crib even before the tour has started. They are feeling the heat and all this talk is proof. As far as Michael Vaughn is concerned, who was first off the blocks, I think it was in extremely poor taste what he said of VVS Laxman last year during the snicko meter incident.

I couldn’t believe a former England captain could say what he did. This is international cricket and if you are a good side you should be up for the challenge.

BM: And what about yourself? How are you approaching the challenge at hand? Needless to say there is a lot of expectation from you this time round?

VK: I am happy people are expecting a lot from me. I would much rather be in this position of premier batsman than it being the other way round. This is where I had always wanted to be, to do it for India in tough situations against quality opposition. Special performances against a tough opposition on tough tours is the hallmark of a very good player and that’s what I want to do with consistency.

BM: So is it fair to say that you have started to take more responsibility within the team? And now that VVS and Rahul aren’t there anymore it is only natural that we will look up to you in the middle order alongside Sachin.

VK: I would definitely like to believe so. I want to give my teammates the feeling that when I am batting they can relax and feel assured that we are in control. As a batsman that is what my job is and it is important I play my part to perfection. You have to stand up to these challenges if you want to be recognized as a good test cricketer and that’s what I aim to do in the coming months.

BM: A word on Sachin please. I know you are a serious admirer of him, but he needs this series as much as anyone else does. There is so much talk about him, his retirement, his contribution to the team. He does need all the support we can possibly give him isn’t it?

VK: I don’t know if I should say this but I am ashamed that Indians are questioning Sachin for having had a few bad months. It is time to look back at the countless moments of joy he has given us all in the last 23 years he has played the game and only then can we realise what he has achieved.

For me he is the one who inspired me to play the game and I find it disgusting that people are questioning his ability and raising a finger at him. As Indians we should just let him be and salute him for all that he has done for India and Indian cricket. It is only a matter of time before he gets big runs and I am absolutely certain it is going to happen very very soon.

BM: Let me ask you this- how much of the challenge is mental and is about confidence and how much is about skill and technical ability? For example we have seen the very technically correct batsman failing to handle pressure while the not so correct player has come through the ranks with flying colours?

VK: I would say it is 80% mental and is about confidence. It is largely a battle in the mind and to be able to win this battle is the most crucial thing. 20% is about being skilled and technically sound. No more than that. Unless you are ready for the battle mentally you will never be successful no matter how technically sound you are. And that’s where I feel we have an edge. All this talk about spin is proof that the English are vulnerable. It will no doubt be a very good series but we definitely have the upper hand going into the contest.

BM: Final question- do you agree with the labelling of “Revenge Series” or “Payback time?”

VK: No, I don’t. We aren’t going into battle, we are going to play cricket. I would like to say it is a very tough series between two quality cricket sides. At the same time there is little doubt that we would love to win the contest. Playing at home in our own conditions we’d sure want to excel in all departments of the game and beat the English.
