CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalitha has said that her film “Ayirathil Oruvan” (one in a thousand) opposite the legendry MGR paved her entry into the political world. She acted first with MGR in this film 50 years ago. She continued acting opposite MGR, the actor turned politician turned chief minister for a record 28 films.
The 1965 hit film was recently digitised and rereleased pan Tamil Nadu in 122 theatres and it completed its silver jubilee run Monday in two of the city's theatres.
Jayalalitha said the film gave her an unforgettable lifelong experience. She said it was a successful film which gave her an opportunity to meet up with the legendary MGR and talk to him in person. “It is not an exaggeration to say that the film paved my entry into politics.” she said in a message sent to Divya films that released the digitised version which had a successful rerun, according to media reports here.
“Even after 50 years after its release, the film remains like a fresh lotus depicted in a painting”, Jayalalitha said in her message. The CM’s speech was read out by G Chokalingam of Divya films at a function held here to commemorate the siliver jubilee rerun of the digitised version of the 60s hit film.
The support staff of the film including MS Vishwanathan its music director, P Susheela who playbacked singing for jayalalitha in the film and RK Shanmugham, the dialogue writer fo the film and Muthu, Makeup man of MGR were all present on the occasion.
Jayalalitha observed that today when makers celebrate a week long run of a film, Ayirathil Oruvan ran for 100 days in 1965 and its digitised version has run for 175 days. This is testimony to the quality of entertainment in the film besides the talent of those associated with making this film, she said.
Leading hero of Tamil films Sarathkumar said much before the technologies swept the film world, MGR was able to conceptualise a film that could match the likes of Hollywood marvels like Pirates of the Caribbbean.
