MGR's Re-Mastered AAYIRATHIL ORUVAN Silver Jubilee, A Rare Distinction!


In today’s era when even a Rs 200 crore movie, is unable to run for 25 days in cinema houses, late Tamil superstar MGR’s digitally re-mastered movie AAYIRATHIL ORUVAN has created a record run of Silver Jubilee (175 days) in couple of theatres in Chennai!

To celebrate the occasion, a grand music programme featuring popular orchestra Lakshman Sruthi playing MGR’s greatest hits was held at Kamarajar Arangam on Monday evening with stars like Sarath Kumar, P Vasu etc. attending the event.

G Chokkalingam of Divya Films, the firm that restored this film, said, “Today’s generation is not even aware of the term Silver Jubilee, which in the past was the benchmark of a hit movie. Hence the Silver Jubilee run of AAYIRATHIL ORUVAN is of more importance.”

Applauding the Silver Jubilee celebration event of the movie, he said, “The event was indeed a great tribute to legendary actor MGR.”

He informed, “ I am happier particularly because when the movie was first released in 1965 and run for over a year, we were unable to have functions to celebrate the milestone because of the anti-Hindi agitations that broke out then forcing the film producers to curtail celebrations. So I am happy that we are able to celebrate our Puratchithalaivar’s (MGR’s sobriquet) success so many years later.”




AAYIRATHIL ORUVAN, a swashbuckling action-adventure film about sea-pirates and independence achieved against a cruel tyrant was a super duper hit when released. It was digitally restored and re-release in January 2014. Apart from scope conversion from 35mm to digital scope, the film also had a completely re-recorded background music played out by an assistant of M. S. Viswananthan. The digital conversion was done by Prasad EFX, Chennai.

Digitised version of the film celebrates silver jubilee

As the MGR-Jayalalithaa starrer Aayirathil Oruvan’s new digitised version celebrated the silver jubilee here on Monday, AIADMK general secretary and Chief Minister Jayalalithaa declared that the film had paved the way for her entry into politics.

Ms. Jayalalithaa, who first played opposite MGR in the film released in 1965 and continued to pair with him in 28 films, the maximum for any heroine, said the film gave her an unforgettable and lifelong experience.
‘It’s still fresh’

“It was a successful film, and it gave me an opportunity to meet and converse with MGR. It is not an exaggeration to say that the film paved the way for my entry into politics,” she said in a message sent to Divya Films that released the digitised version of the film which has had a successful rerun.

“Even 50 years after its release, the film remains like a fresh lotus depicted in a beautiful painting,” she said.

Ms. Jayalalithaa’s speech was read out by G. Chockalingam of Divya Films at a function attended by M.S. Viswanathan, music director of the film; P. Susheela, playback singer of Ms. Jayalalithaa in the film; R.K. Shanmugam, dialogue writer; and Muthu, the makeup man of MGR.

Ms. Jayalalithaa said that at a time when a film was celebrated for completing a week in theatres, Aayirthil Oruvan had run over 100 days in 1965, and the digitised version now completed 175 days. “It stands testimony to the quality of the story and the talent of those who participated in the making of the film,” she said. The film transcended time and attracted people from all sections, particularly the youth.

Actor R. Sarathkumur said that long before the advent of the technological revolution, MGR was able to conceptualise a film that could match Pirates of the Caribbean in every aspect. “His political message was conveyed through the film.”

The digitised version was released in 122 theatres across the State and remained a popular draw in two city theatres.

சென்னை: புரட்சித் தலைவர் எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் வெற்றியை எந்த நடிகரும் நினைத்துப் பார்க்க முடியாது என்று நடிகர் சத்யராஜ் கூறினார்.
கடந்த 1965-ஆம் ஆண்டு எம்.ஜி.ஆர்., ஜெயலலிதா, நாகேஷ், நம்பியார் ஆகியோர் நடிப்பில் வெளிவந்த 'ஆயிரத்தில் ஒருவன்' திரைப்படம் டிஜிட்டல் தொழில்நுட்பத்தில் அண்மையில் மறுவெளியீடு செய்யப்பட்டது.
இந்தப் படத்தின் 175-ஆவது நாள் வெற்றி விழா சென்னையில் திங்கள்கிழமை நடைபெற்றது. சரத்குமார் எம்எல்ஏ தலைமை தாங்கினார்.
