    For approaching Krishna Jayanthi

    A bhajan,

    Bata Do Koyi Kaun Gali Gaye Shyam..........

    Manna De in Madhu(1959):

    Lata Mangeshkar in Madhu(1959):

    A rendition by the classical vocalist Prabha Atre:

    The raga is Khamaj ( or khamaj with slight variation in movie versions).

    This bhajan has been used in some other movies also.

    Bata Do Koyi Kaun Gali Gaye Shyam -> both the versions, by Manna Dey and Lata Mangeshkar respectively, are melodious. Nice music by Roshan.

    Vani Jayaram wins Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award

    Here are two of the many songs I liked:

    From Meera(1979)

    Eri Main To Prem Diwani.........

    This is set to raga Todi (Hindustani).

    From Sruthilayalu(Telugu)

    Alokaye Sri Balakrishnam Saki Ananda Sundara ThaNdava Krishnam......

    This is a Sanskrit compostion from Krishna Leela Tarangini by Narayana Theerthar, a 17th/18th century composer who lived in Kaveri Delta ( now known as Tanjore District).

    It is Raga Huseni (carnatic).

    SHAAN (1980)

    Shaan was directed by Ramesh Sippy after the super success of his previous venture, Sholay. The story was written by Salim-Javed. The film was expected to match the success of Sholay but failed to do so. The film however, ran to packed houses in its re-runs and made a lot of money. Ramesh Sippy did obtain the services of Sholay's music composer, R.D. Burman, whose songs for the film provided it with a Best Music nomination at Filmfare. The songs became super hit in the year 1980. The usage of synth and electric guitar is just superb in this movie. (Lyrics are by Anand Bakshi.)

    A magnificent composition by R D Burman that is strangely obscure in spite of his enduring popularity to this day. Maybe it's because it's sung by Rafi than the usual favourites of the RD camp.

    Baharon ke Sapne is as such a great soundtrack. Lata Mangeshkar also has two great solos.

    Vinayaka Chathurthi song from Maharashtra

    Happy Vinayaka Chathurthi !

    In reading about Indian festivals I came to understand that large scale celebration of Vinayak Chathurthi began in Maharashtra.

    Here is a Marathi song in praise of Vinayaka by Aruna Sairam:

    Bhaje Mridanga TaLa Vina..............

    I like the emotional rendition!
