Legend says that Thirugnana sambhandhar sang "mattita punna" pathigam in this shrine by which "Poompavai" came back alive where she was bitten by a snake and dead

earlier.Brahma,Sukrachariyar and Lord Rama had worshipped in this temple.Goddess Parvathi had worshipped in this temple in the form of peacock (Mayil)and hence the name thirumayyilai to this place.
