He contemporarized Thamizh cinema and at one point contemporized himself with his youthful works like ILamai oonjalaadugiradhu.
First feminist director before KB literally made highly successful bilinguals and made touching films which had regularly moving and dignifying performances from artistes like Gemini Ganesan. His comedies and tragedies alike bore stamp of amazing genius and enthralled music and film lovers with awesome gems.
We are left with the haunting melodies of Kalyana parisu and nenjam Marappadhillai to recollect and remember the genius!!

Tamil film director Sridhar passes away

Chennai (PTI): Noted Tamil film director, Sridhar, a trend setter in modern Tamil cinema, here on Monday of a cardiac arrest, family sources said.

Sridhar (73), paralysed for the past few years and confined to the wheel-chair, is survived by hiswife, a son and a daughter.

The man with the midas touch, Sridhar churned out some of the best romantic comedies in Tamil like "Thenilavu" starring Gemini Ganesan and Vyjayanthi Mala Bali and the first Tamil film to be shot in Jammu and Kashmir, "Kadhalikka Neramillai" -- a cult classic, and others like "Ooty Varai Uravu," starring Tamil icon the late Sivaji Ganesan in the lead.

Known for his penchant for new faces, Sridhar had to his credit introducing various top yesteryear actors such as AIADMK leader J Jayalalithaa, airhostess-turned-actor Kanchana and actor Ravichandran, among others.

While the director's debut film "Kalyana Parisu" was a runaway hit, he is best remembered for his "Kadalikaa Neramillai," a light-hearted movie on impersonation.

Sridhar is also credited with introducing Jayalalithaa, who was in her teens then, in "Venniraadai", the first adult film in Tamil, opposite Srikanth who also made his debut in the flick.

CHENNAI: One of the chief architects of contemporary Tamil cinema, director Sridhar, passed away here on Monday after a brief illness. He was 75.

“He wrote very interesting stage plays when we were in school,” recalls Chitralaya Gopu, a classmate, close friend and colleague of the director. Born in Chengalpattu district, Mr. Sridhar did his schooling in St. Joseph’s School there. After his schooling and a brief stint in the Co-operation Department, he left his job to get back to what he loved most, script writing.

He wrote a play titled ‘Rathapasam.’ Theatre personality T.K. Shanmugam, who was very impressed with this production, ensured that the play was staged at all major sabhas in the city. Following the success of this play, he received offers to write scripts for Tamil films. ‘Rathapasam’ was later made into a film.

Mr. Sridhar’s screenplay and dialogue was of a style that Tamil cinema had not seen before. Gradually, his fascination for other aspects of film-making grew. He wore the director’s hat for the first time in ‘Kalyanaparisu’ for Venus Pictures in the late 1950s.

Soon after this smashing hit, he started his own production house Chitralaya Pictures. His first film for this banner, ‘Thenilavu,’ starring Gemini Ganesan and Vyjayantimala Bali was a very successful venture. The film was largely shot in Kashmir.


Mr. Sridhar also has the credit of launching actors Jayalalithaa, Venniradai Nirmala, Venniradai Murthy and Srikanth in his film ‘Venniradai.’ “Whether it was romance, sentimental themes or comedy, he could handle them with ease. He was a trend-setter in Tamil films. His dialogues were refreshingly conversational,” says Mr. Gopu.

His film, ‘Kadhalikka Neramillai,’ made waves in the industry and remains one of the best-loved comedies in Tamil cinema.

END OF AN ERA: Cine artists pay tribute to veteran film director Sridhar who passed away in Chennai on Monday.

Mr. Sridhar’s other hits include ‘Nenjil Or Aalayam,’ ‘Sivandaman’ (one of the first Tamil films to have portions shot abroad), ‘Urimai Kural’ and ‘Meenava Nanban’ and later, ‘Ilamai Oonjal Aadugiradu,’ starring Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth. He made nearly 60 films in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi.

Role model


Director K. Balachander says: “Mr. Sridhar was my role model.” Mr. Balachander recalls having waited in a queue at Casino theatre for nearly five hours to buy a ticket for ‘Kalyanaparisu’.

Recalling his “moment of glory” with the director, actor Kamal Haasan says: “He had a very casual humility and would treat all of us like his contemporaries. When I was about 25, just after ‘Ilamai Oonjal Aadugiradu,’ he asked me if I could direct a film for Chitralaya.” This gave the young actor such a high that he would tell other colleagues playfully: “Listen I have a direction offer from Sridhar sir. Better utilise me properly or I’ll take it up.”

Music director Illayaraja said it was during director Sridhar’s period that technicians received due recognition. “He is an important chapter in Tamil film history.”

Mr. Sridhar did not like hierarchy. Director Santhana Bharathy, who earlier worked as his assistant, says: “He would trust us completely and make us feel very important.”

“He was very friendly to everyone irrespective of the job they did. He loved playing table tennis and would often play a game with the office boys,” recalls veteran public relations professional ‘Film News’ Anandan.

Leading technicians, actors and close friends paid tribute to the master director at his Neelankarai residence. Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin laid a wreath on behalf of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and paid tribute to the director. Mr. Sridhar is survived by wife Devasena, son, daughter, and grandchildren.

அதற்கு முன்னர் பராசக்தி போன்ற புரட்சிப்படங்களும், மலைக்கள்ளன், நாடோடி மன்னன் போன்ற வித்தியாசமான படங்களும், சந்திரலேகா போன்ற பிரம்மாண்டமான படங்களும் வந்திருந்தபோதிலும், ஒரு படத்தை கவிதையாக வடிக்க முடியும் என்று ஒரு புதிய சித்தாந்தத்தை துவக்கியவர் 'புதுமை இயக்குனர்' ஸ்ரீதர்தான் என்றால் அது மிகையல்ல. அமரதீபம் போன்ற படங்களுக்கு வசன்ம் எழுதுபவராக தன்னுடைய வாழ்க்கையைத் துவங்கிய போதிலும் அவரை முழுக்க முழுக்க ஒரு வித்தியாசமான திரைப்படவாதியாக அடையாளம் காட்டியது, அவரது கதை வசனம் மற்றும் இயக்கத்தில் முதன்முதலாக வந்த "கல்யாண்ப்பரிசு" தான்.

"கல்யாண்ப்பரிசு" ஒரு மாபெரும் வெள்ளிவிழாப்படமாக அமைந்தது என்பது மட்டும் அதற்குப்பெருமையல்ல. அது பல படங்கள் செய்யக்கூடிய சாதனைதான். ஆனால் கல்யாண்ப்பரிசு படத்தை மக்கள் வேறு விதமாகக் கண்டார்கள். அது ஏதோ தங்கள் வாழ்க்கையில் ஒன்றிவிட்ட ஒரு கதையாக நிகழ்ச்சியாக அவர்கள் மனதில் படிந்தது. குறிப்பாக பெண்கள் மனத்தில் அது பெரிய தாக்கத்தை ஏற்படுத்தியது. டீக்கடைகளிலும், முடி வெட்டும் கடைகளிலும் அதுவே தலைப்புச்செய்தியாக பேசப்பட்டது.

கோயில்களிலும் குளக்கரைகளிலும் சந்தித்துக்கொள்ளும் பெண்களுக்கு வேறு பேச்சில்லாமல் போனது. கல்யாணப்பரிசு படத்தை பார்த்தாயா என்று கேட்பதற்கு பதில், நான் இத்தனை முறை பார்த்தேன், நீ எத்தனை முறை பார்த்தாய் என்று கேட்டுக்கொள்வது வாடிக்கையாகிப்போனது.

அந்த ஆண்டு தமிழகத்தில் பிறந்த பெண் குழந்தைகளுக்கு 'வசந்தி' என்றும் ஆண்குழந்தைகளுக்கு 'பாஸ்கர்' என்றும் பெயர் வைப்பதை பெருமையாக கொள்ளுமளவுக்கு அந்தப்படம் மக்கள் மனத்தில் ஒன்றிப்போனது.

படம் முடிந்தபின்னரும் கூட தியேட்டர் இருக்கையை விட்டு எழுந்திருக்காமல், 'காதலிலே தோல்வியுற்றான்' என்று பாடிக்கொண்டே அடிவானத்தை நோக்கிச்சென்ற பாஸ்கர் என்னவானான் என்று பிரம்மை பிடித்துப்போய் உட்கார்ந்திருந்த ரசிகர்கள் ஏராளம்.

1959 ல், ஒரு புறம் வீரபாண்டிய கட்டபொம்மனின் சிம்ம கர்ஜனைக்கும், மறுபுறம் நாடோடி மன்னனின் மின்னல் வெட்டும் வாள்வீச்சுக்கும் நடுவே இந்த 21 வயது இளைஞர் இயக்குனராக விஸ்வரூபம் எடுத்தபோது பார்த்த கண்கள் பிரமித்தன.

கல்யாணப்பரிசு படத்தின் கதையை அதன் தயாரிப்பாளர் மற்றும் அன்றைய திரையுலக ஜாம்பவான்களுக்கு நடுவில் சின்னஞ்சிறு பையனாக இவர் கதை சொன்னபோது அதிசயித்தவர்கள் அதன் முடிவை இவர் சொன்னபோது அதிர்ச்சி அடைந்தனர். காரணம் முடிவு அன்றைய திரைப்பட இலக்கணத்துக்கு மாறுபட்டிருந்தது. கதாநாயகன் கதாநாயகியின் கழுத்தில் தாலி கட்டும்போது "வணக்கம்" போட்டே பழகியவர்கள் அவர்கள்.

"என்னது? கதாநாயகியின் கழுத்தில் கதாநாயகன் தாலி கட்டவில்லையா..??. கதாநாயகிக்கு வேறொருவன் தாலி கட்டுகிறானா..?. கதாநாயகன் ஏமாற்றத்தோடு செல்கிறானா..?? இது என்ன முடிவு..??. நிச்சயம் இந்த இளைஞர் தன் முதல் படத்திலேயே தோலிவியைத்தான் சந்திக்கப் போகிறார்"

என்று அனைவரும் ஆரூட்ம் சொன்னார்கள்.

அவர்களின் ஆரூடங்களைப் பொய்யாக்கி விட்டு "கல்யாணப்பரிசு" மாபெரும் வெற்றியடைந்தது. மற்ற இயக்குனர்களுக்கு இந்த இளம் இயக்குனர் சிம்ம சொப்பனமானார்.

எந்தப்பக்கம் திரும்பினாலும்

'வாடிக்கை மறந்ததும் ஏனோ'
'ஆசையாலே மனம்.. அஞ்சுது கொஞ்சுது தினம்'
'காதலிலே தோல்வியுற்றாள் கன்னியொருத்தி'

இப்படி அப்படத்தின் பாடல்களே ஒலித்தன.

பட்டுக்கோட்டையார், ஏ.எம்.ராஜா, ஸ்ரீதர் கூட்டணியில் இப்படம் திரையிடப்பட்ட அரங்குகள் எல்லாம் 'பாடல் பெற்ற தலங்கள்' ஆனது.

1960 முதல் இன்று வரையில் ஒவ்வொரு தீபாவளியன்றும் வானொலியில் ஒலிபரப்பப்படும் முதல் பாடல் பி.சுசீலாவின் இனிய குரலில், ராஜாவின் இசையில் பட்டுக்கோட்டையாரின் சாகாவரம் பெற்ற 'உன்னைக்கண்டு நானாட... என்னைக்கண்டு நீயாட' என்னும் கல்யாணப்பரிசு பாடலே என்பது இப்படத்தின் பிரத்தியேக சிறப்பு.

'புதுமையை கொடுத்தால் நிச்சயம் வரவேற்போம்' என்று தமிழக மக்கள் திரண்டெழுந்து கோஷமிட, இந்த புதுமை இயக்குனரின் வெற்றிப்பயணம் ஆரம்பமானது..................
