Manna Dey - The Legendary Singer
Manna Dey passed away on October 23, 2013 in Bangalore which was his home town for the last several years.
Needless to say, I am, and will always be, an admirer and fan of the great singer. Many of you may not agree with me, but I feel
that he was the greatest classical singer of modern Hindi cinema. On these pages, I am planning to post articles about him, his music,
and a selection of my favorite songs sung by him. I invite everyone to contribute to this thread.
Thank you.

Manna Dey - an unmatched musical genius
Irony was the constant refrain of Manna Dey’s life. A world happy to sway to jingles could not always appreciate the steeped-in-classicism kalaam of Manna Da. Not blessed with the rare yodelling skills of Kishore Kumar or the soaked-in-romance style of Mohammed Rafi, there were a few things Manna Dey could do which his contemporaries could not aspire to. He could whip up a Lagi chunari mein daag, or Aayo kahan se Ghanshyam with such ease that he made a mockery of all predictions of the songs being difficult or challenging. Music directors Shankar-Jaikishen, indeed Mohammed Rafi too, felt he was the best choice when it came to songs with classical leanings.

This is Manna Dey's and Salil Da's first Malayalam song:
Note: The Hindi version of this song was sung by Hariharan, and the Bengali version
by K.J. Yesudas & Sabita Choudhary (both available on Youtube).

Manna Dey was a versatile singer with an extraordinary melodious voice and unique style. May his soul rest in peace.
Here are some of my favorite Manna Dey songs, besides Zindagi Kaisi Hai Paheli from ANAND (1971), and Jhanak Jhanak Tori Baje Payaliya from MERE HUZOOR (1968) which have already been posted.
Poochho Na Kaise Maine Rain Bitai - MERI SURAT TERI ANKHEN (1963)
Music: SD Burman
Lyrics: Shailendra
Featuring: Ashok Kumar
