Very nice review indeed. Was it irir123 who was responsible for persuading the critic to do this review or was it someone else. Whoever it is, deserves the kudos. Not because a westerner is praising Raja but because this reviewer is quite knowledgeable and sensible!!

Sureshs65 there seems to be good response for this Album. Few radio stations/programs which feature such rare songs have featured it. There has been some nice tweets to @AndyVotel who created this album. So far this is the only review. Happy that it is been liked not for kitsch factor.

Sukhwinder singh sings for raaja in that marathi film.
excerpts: "the Chaiyya Chaiyya singer is on top of the world after recording a Marathi song for Marathi flick Hello Jaihind. Unable to hide his glee, he says: "This is the first time legendary Ilayaraja has composed music for a Marathi film, and it was an honour singing for him. It was tough because I wasn't familiar with the dialect, but I managed it alright! And when Ilayaraja hugged me after the recording, I just looked up and thanked the Lord!"

Prashan Jayatheepam's A a day spent with the GENIUS MAESTRO Dr ILLAYARAAJA…!!!
20th June 5.00pm
I call up Karthic Raaja for a chat regarding a project which we want to work together. I call him and it goes unanswered. I call him again around 6.00pm and still goes unanswered. Then I go in for a recording session around 6.30pm with the Mandolin Maestro Padma Shri Shrinivas. During recording, I get a call from Karthic Raaja around 9pm…wanting me to come to his house at 10am the next day!
21st June 10.00am
I meet up with Karthic Raaja at his private residence and discuss about the project for about an hour. Once that was over I requested to meet Raaja Sir. Karthic says dad is at Prasad Studios and calls Raaja Sir. ‘’Dad my friend Prashan from London is here and wants to meet you and get your blessings’’ says Karthic on speaker. ‘’OK ask him to come to the studio during lunch at 1.00pm’’ says Raaja Sir. Extremely thrilled at being able to see the Maestro we go to Prasad Studios Kodambakkam.
I get to the Studio around 12.35pm and the Entrance is fully guarded by about 8 people all wanting to know who I am and whether I have a prior appointment. So I tell one Mr. Subbiah that I have been invited by Raaja Sir to meet him during the Lunch break. He asks me to wait outside…goes in and comes back out…and says take a seat in the viewing gallery as the recording will only finish at 1.00pm and then I will take you to Raaja Sir’s room. As I enter the viewing gallery I see for the very 1st time the GENIUS conducting the Orchestra.
At 1.00pm sharp he says ‘break’ and all the Musicians go for lunch. Mr. Subbiah comes to me and says…remove your shoes and come in with me. I am taken through the main Recording studio, then through another hall, then through 3 rooms all guarded by people, then in to the 4th room where Raaja Sir is just about to eat. Wearing a pure white costume he looks directly in to my eyes for the very 1st time and smiles and says…

(All the 54 musicians are seated and Raaja Sir sits in his seat and watches the Malayalam film role for RR. He watches the scene just ONCE and asks the director how many seconds. 43 replies the director. He immediately starts writing the notes on a full Manuscript score sheet. Everyone is silent in the main recording room. I peep over his shoulder to see what he is writing...OMG!!! the Man writes it in such speed that you can’t even play. In about 25 minutes all is written for the 54 Musicians and then he looks back at me and says ‘En kaiyai vida…en mind romba fast…athu than pirachanaiye’.
The Score he has written is then photo copied for all the Musicians and even I am given a copy. I check the copy out and even the basic of notations are detailed precisely and written out so neatly. He looks at me and says ‘1st violin notes-a paadalama…? And I sang it exactly as he has written it…he says mmmm! …he then says ‘Ulagathila entha Orchestravum inda notes-a Vasickum…athu than Bach-da Music-a innum vasikuraanga…Computerla Music panna eppidi yellaruckum theiryum?’ he says…
Raaja Sir then walks in to the Console room and the Orchestra starts practicing the piece twice and then after Raaja sir says ‘Take’ the main recording is done. a few more BGM’s are done for the film and around 6.30pm he says ‘pack up’ and the Musicians leave.
He then comes out of the console room and looks at me and says…
IR – photo educkanum illaya?
Me – Eppidi Sir ivvalavu notesaiyum verum 25 minutesla eluduneenga?
IR – Ellam Kadavul Seyal. Murali vanthu oru photo edu…
Then I take my Canon EOS 550D out…and his eyes grow bigger and starts asking me about the technicalities of the camera. With my basic knowledge of photography I just tell him a few bits. He in return tells me…I own a Canon 5D Mark II. I am just spellbound!!!
After which I take a photo with him. My dream comes true!!!...Then I kindly request him that I take a picture of him alone…and he says OK. After that was done I ask him kindly whether I can take a few pictures of the Studio…he says OK. Once all is done…I take his blessings and I am about to leave…he says '‘vaanga veeta poi saapittutu pogalam'’…well why would I say no to Chocolate Cake…I grab the offer!!!
He then says ‘'Vaanga Namma Vandiyile Pogalam'’...and then I get in to the Car with Raaja Sir seated in front. He doesn’t speak a word and listen to a few pieces of Tchaikovsky all the way to T-Nagar!
Once we got home…he invited me to the table and I sat right beside him. We had dinner together and it was me doing all the talking this time. I praised him about all his work he has done. I took about 10 songs for example and I started telling him the wonders he has done within them from Counterpoint to Graha Bedam to Cromaticism and he listens patiently without uttering a word. I told him what ever I could remember within that 20 - 30 minutes.
after listening carefully to what i said...he replied...
IR – ivvalavu vishayam iruckennu enacku theiryade…naan idellam edirparthu notes eludinadu kidaiyadu….adu thana vaaradu…ellam kadavul seyal. 6000 paatula inda 10 paattu thaan nalla irucka?

After which I get his blessings again and thank him for the wonderful 10 hours in my life…the most worthiest 10 hours of my life and leave.
P.S - One day I will tell my grand children…that I have not met Bach, Brahms, Beethoven or Mozart…but I have met, seen, touched, spoke, sat beside, had lunch, had dinner and got Blessings from a GENIUS called MAESTRO Dr ILLAYARAAJA!!!

Prashan Jayatheepam's A a day spent with the GENIUS MAESTRO Dr ILLAYARAAJA…!!!

Neither do I, which is why I'm here in the studio. Had I known everthying about it, I'd have been at home. Anyway, tell me whatever you know.
Me – Konjam Counterpoint Harmony theiryum
A little of CHT
(Now Raaja Sir starts to Explain the Differences of Bach’s and Brahms’s Counterpoint Techniques…the way both the Composers have handled these technicalities…He explains for about 30 minutes and also indirectly teaches me some valuable tips about Counterpoint)
IR – Bach & Brahms pannadula naan pannadu verum 1% thaan. Naan vanthu Kadalin alai pola…alaiyin nurai pola…nuraiyin thuli pola…thuliyin nuni pola…appidi onnum perisa sadikkala…
My work's just 1% of what Bach & Brahms have done. I'm just a wave in an ocean, froth of the wave, a drop in the froth, a tip of the drop... nothing much have I achieved.
I am just stunned at this point and don’t know what to say to him…
IR – Saapaadu Sari Illaya? Mmm? …Koochapadama pottu saapudunga…
Isn't the food nice? Eat without any inhibition.
Me – Sir oru photo educkalama?
Can I take a snap?
IR – Daralama…ana Saapadu nerathila vendam…
Sure, but not during lunch.
It’s about 2.00pm now and he says…

Murali – ama sir
Me – Recording parkalama Sir
Can I see the recording?
IR – parkonuma?
Do you want to?

Yes sir, I want to see the way you write notes and conduct your orchestra.
IR – Sari Satham podama…photo educkama parkanum…sariya?
OK. You'll need to stay silent, and no photos.
Me - Kattayam Sir
Sure sir.
(Still I haven’t taken the photo with him…Then Raaja Sir walks out of his room and in to the main studio and I follow him…)

‘Ulagathila entha Orchestravum inda notes-a Vasickum…athu than Bach-da Music-a innum vasikuraanga…Computerla Music panna eppidi yellaruckum theiryum?’ he says…
Any orchestra anywhere in the world will be able to play from these notes. That's why Bach is played even today. If music's done on a computer, how will everyone understand?
Raaja Sir then walks in to the Console room and the Orchestra starts practicing the piece twice and then after Raaja sir says ‘Take’ the main recording is done. a few more BGM’s are done for the film and around 6.30pm he says ‘pack up’ and the Musicians leave.

well why would I say no to Chocolate Cake…I grab the offer!!!
He then says ‘'Vaanga Namma Vandiyile Pogalam'’
we can drive in my car.
...and then I get in to the Car with Raaja Sir seated in front.
I'm not aware that there are these many things... I don't expect to cover these when I write notes... it comes naturally... all God's grace. So, only 10 of the 6000 are good, is it?
Me – Illa Sir…Evvilavo paattu irucku…ennacku therinjada sonnen…
No sir... there are many more.. I only spoke about the ones I'm aware of.
IR - mmmm...Ethatchum oru paattu paadu...
Sing a song..
Me - Entha Paattu Sir?
Which one sir?
IR - 6000 thila onnu paadu
Any, one in 6000.
I sing Thendral Vanthu Theendum...
IR - mmmm. Intha paatta romba perr different different styles-la copy pannanga…athu parava illa…namacku padaippu vanthadhu…
This song has been copied by many people in many stlyes. But that doesnt matter... we were able to create it.
After which I get his blessings again and thank him for the wonderful 10 hours in my life…the most worthiest 10 hours of my life and leave.
P.S - One day I will tell my grand children…that I have not met Bach, Brahms, Beethoven or Mozart…but I have met, seen, touched, spoke, sat beside, had lunch, had dinner and got Blessings from a GENIUS called MAESTRO Dr ILLAYARAAJA!!!

skr, You made my day by posting Prasanth's experience with Maestro. Thanks a lot! I will take away this whole interaction. Goosebumps on the writing the score at ligtning fast and tells 'my mind acts faster than writing'. Listening to tchaikovsky while driving home, as expected. Always on praise on Bachs and Brahms. I don't think I can interact with him even if I see him personally, I can feel the power in him just reading this. Only musical Genius India has ever produced IMHO.

San_K: your skepticism is well-founded. As one of the people working on the new raaja.com, I can point out some ways in which this effort is different.
First, the domain name has been acquired from the previous owners (at considerable expense, I might add) by Ilaiyaraaja himself. Secondly, the site development work is contracted to full-time professionals. Thirdly, the new raaja.com team is investing considerable time, effort, and equipment to bring you articles and multimedia of the highest quality.
We are certain you won’t be disappointed. Stay tuned.

Ilayaraja to compose music for a city play
Priya Ramachandran, TNN | Jul 11, 2011, 12.45am IST
In a city like ours, which has a cultural scene that just crawls along lazily, here's a play that will change that perspective. It promises to be bigger, better and most importantly, bring the "glamor" back on stage. Seema Azharuddin, of Kartaal Productions, is bringing to Hyderabad another Broadway-style production after their staging of "A Streetcar Named Desire" last year.
This time the city will witness the iconic, "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf," which is counted among the top five Broadway plays ever. Apart from having an all Indian cast with names like Farooque Shaikh, Shefali Shah and Dr K Shrikanth Iyengar and Seema herself, the play will involve big names like music maestro Ilayaraja.
In fact, this will be the first time ever that Ilayaraja will compose music for a play. An excited Seema tells Hyderabad Times, "My mentor, Ramesh Prasad told the stalwart about my production. For a man of his stature, Ilayaraja always seeks to do novel things. We had a long chat and then he told me he needs to sit down with us for three days to understand the theme of the play. He'd start composing soon after. When I told him he is the 'God of music', he said, 'Please don't make me a God. I am a nobody'. I'm thrilled to have him on board," she adds.
Shekhar Kapur too was ready to direct this play. "Theatre requires great dedication. It's not like cinema, where you give your dates and finish your shooting. It's a continuous process that evolves with every staging. We needed someone who is fully involved. Shekhar didn't have the kind of time to direct the play, but he will be a part of the whole process in the best way he can. In fact, many stars wanted to act in the play, but they were not ready to give us the time and many refuse to audition too. But that's silly. Even if you are a star, you need to be good on stage as there are no retakes and second chances in theatre. This production is an attempt to put AP on the world map and it has to be perfect," she says.
--
I'd be surprised if they do, but I hope the producers release the score of the play on CD.

skr, yes, it is Goran. The pic’s nothing much to do with any anniversary. I was lamenting about the lack of S&V style in the current day game to one of my friends. Despite there being some superb display of tennis in Roger’s finesse and Rafa’s relentlessness, overall, today’s tennis, to me, is nowhere as exciting and engrossing as that of the past, where most of the players, the ladies included, used to employ the S&V technique. In this process I wanted to remember and cherish the memories of my all time fav, the ace machine, Goran who was one of the very good exponents of this game. (One of the very few newer dudes who tried to carry on this tradition was a lesser-known American, Taylor Dent. Alas, he too perished due to injuries that resulted in a stunted, underachieving career) Frankly, I find this ‘stick-to-the-baseline-and-thulp’ style of today’s game rather dull and monotonous. It’s like as if the players tell each other before the start of the game: “Indha bordera thandi naanum varamaaten, neeyum varakkoodadhu”
End-dig.

Sukhwinder sings for SRK
Playback singer Sukhwinder Singh has recorded a song to be lip-synched by Shah Rukh Khan in Ra.One. This is Singh’s third song for Khan in 13 years. Chaiyya chaiyya (Dil Se..) and Haule haule (Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi)

‘Chaiyyan chaiyyan gave me the first big break in Bollywood’
SRK high on Ra.One
Rs 300 crore riding on SRK chartbusters.
Would this song hit high notes too? “I’m not an astrologer, so I can’t predict that. With my experience as a playback singer for the last 15-16 years, I know that this song, like the previous two, matches Shah Rukh’s personality and might become synonymous with Ra.One,” asserts Singh.
The song has been composed by South stalwart Ilayaraja. “It’s the first time in my career that I recorded a song for nine hours, non-stop. The song is worth our effort because it sounds fresh and different from the work I’ve done lately. It’s quite subdued,” Singh adds.
Sporting encounter
Singh also recorded the title track for Chak De! India, which featured Shah Rukh Khan but he didn’t lip-sync it. The playback singer is not disappointed. “The song was filmed in such a way that it still had Shah Rukh’s energy and the enthusiasm of the girls in the hockey team. It was their anthem. Had it been picturised only on Shah Rukh, it wouldn’t have translated well on screen and the country-wide impact the song made would have been lost,” explains Singh.
So, which South stalwart does he prefer: Oscar-winner AR Rahman or Ilayaraja? Singh answers diplomatically, “It’s unfair to compare their style of working or their compositions. I’ve worked closely with Rahman and he hasn’t changed as a person and professional. Ilayaraja is someone I learnt tremendously from in the course of this song.”
Singh, popular for his high-pitched numbers, was expected to be present for the launch of the Rafi Academy in the city on the weekend. “I’m a Rafi fan. On Saturday, I was stuck somewhere and couldn’t make it to the launch,” he grouses. “I’m happy that his son has opened an avenue for youngsters to learn music and learn about the rare gem, Mohd Rafi.”

This is just seem cheap publicity stunt as I think the song Sukhy is referring to is from Ilaiyaraaja's upcomming Marathi film.
Read this -
Now, Ilayaraja makes melodies in Marathi
After scoring music for Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu and Hindi films, which set many hearts aflutter, legendary music director Ilayaraja a is now composing music for a Marathi film.
For the last few months, Ilayaraja a has been working on the music for ‘Hello Jaihind’, a Marathi-language movie being directed by Gajendra Ahire and produced by Trupti Bhoir.
Senior singers like Sukhwinder Singh, Hariharan, Kailash Kher and Anil Shinde have recorded songs for the movie. Uttam Singh is working as the music arranger along with Ilayaraja. The music recordingwas done in Mumbai and Chennai.
“We are very happy Ilayaraja accepted our offer. He is really down to earth. After listening to the story, he immediately agreed to compose music for the film. He has already started composing the music,’ said Ahire.
According to experts, if Ilayaraja agrees to compose music for a film that means that the film should be good. And the fact that Ilayaraja has composed music for the film has already created a buzz about the movie.
According to sources, the Marathi movie for which Ilayaraja has composed music is a story based in Mumbai. The film is slated for release on November 25. Music director Kaushal Inamdar said, “It is really a proud moment for Marathi cinema that the legendary Ilayaraja has composed the music for a Marathi film.”
Ilayaraja is one of the top music composers of South Indian cinema since the late 70s. He has worked mainly in Tamil cinema, but he has also given music for films in Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi.
He has composed more than 4500 songs and provided film scores for around 950 Indian films in a career spanning more than 30 years. He is acclaimed for his background score in films. He is also on the list of world’s top selling music artists.

A nice article by Prashan Jayatheepam about his childhood memories with Maestro ..
After meeting the GENIUS Illayaraaja Sir on the 21st of June 2011 (the most happiest day of my life!!!) I wanted to write an article as to ‘why I craved for it so much’. Thanks to Sri Lankan airlines...I started writing this article as I was truly bored on a flight back from Bangkok to London. The reason was that the Sri Lankan airlines flight was full and my TV wasn’t working right throughout the flight...hence the airhostess (not at all pretty...may be from the rural Hambantota) was not able to move me to another seat and I had to put up with a bust TV all the way to London for 15 hours! (the ticket was £770 return though...and no refunds were given!...so anyone who is on a long haul Sri Lankan airlines flight...make sure you got some other hobby if your TV decides to pack-up!)
The relationship between me and IR is very long. The earliest instance of me and IR I can remember was on Christmas day 1986. I remember that my father bought the film ‘Aboorva Sagothararghal’ on VCR from a video shop called ‘Cine Video’ in Colombo-6 and after Christmas lunch the whole family sat to watch this film. I was not interested in the film as I was barely 4. I had a painting book and went to the bedroom and started scribbling as any kid would. I would get regular shouts from my parents to come and see the animals in the film...I wouldn’t bother. Then they tried to bribe me in to watching the film saying ‘Come and Watch the film...Kamal has grown short’...I didn’t budge. The next thing was...’There are 2 Kamal’s...come and see’ Not a move from me! I was busy scribbling...!
Putting an end to all the scribbling...was one thing that dragged me to the old 11’’ National TV at home...and that was the Song...’Bab bab ba bab bab ba re’ – maybe it was the simple tune and the catchy phrases! After the song was over I was insisting Dad to play the song again and my Dad did so (No remote controls then...so he had to physically get up and go and rewind). Again after the song finished...I wanted to hear it for the 3rd time...Dad had to rewind again. And again I asked him for the 4th time...No No that’s enough said Dad in his stern voice! At which point I asked mum...’why are so many people singing ’Bab bab ba bab bab ba re’? she with her very basic music knowledge from school said that it was called ‘Harmony’. I asked her what was ‘Harmony’...and she replied ‘You know how our church choir sings...it’s like that...some people sing high and some people sing low’...well I didn’t understand...and went back to scribbling. This is where I 1st met IR through Music...or even Harmony! However I wasn’t aware who composed the song and was under the impression Kamal sang it.
The next instance I remember about IR was in the film ‘Punnagai Mannan’...where I used to run to the TV when I used to hear the Song ‘Singalathu Chinna Kuyile’...for some reason I loved the words...’Chingidi bumba chee bumba’...I never knew that the Raaga was called ‘Bhageshri’ then. On Sundays after Church my Dad would usually take me to Cine Video in Colombo-6…and he would ask what film would I want to watch? My answers are always Rajini & Kamal. One Sunday while in Cine Video the audio cassette of ‘Punnagai Mannan’ caught my eye which was on sale for Rs 4/-. Asked Dad to buy it as it was Kamal’s songs…and he did. I still have the cassette with me…and at the rear it reads…under credits…’Computer Music…by Dulip Kumar’ - only 10 years later did I realize that Dulip Kumar was in fact none other than A R Rahman! I kept on asking my mum…why is revathy being called singalathu chinna kuyile…when she is actually Thamil?…My mum would reply it’s only a fake story!...but it was hard to believe still…! Another song in the same film which I craved so much listening to was ‘Edetho Ennam’…such an attractive tune to the ears…yet so simple! I had no idea where these tunes came from…tunes where you feel as if honey is poured in buckets-loads through your ears… One line from the Song which was very true on Illayaraaja Sir was ‘Sila pookkal thaane malargindrathu…pala pookkal yeno uthirkindrathu?’ - This is where I met IR for the 2nd time through Music! Though I am still unaware as to who composed these song. As an appreciation to Raaja Sir I played ‘Edetho Ennam’ for a school musical concert in 1996.
The next instance I remember about IR was in the film ‘Mouna Raagam’...while all the songs in the film and the RR were blockbusters...I would crave to listen to the song ‘Pani Vizhum Iravu’!...again the Vocal Harmonies in the prelude & 2nd Interlude dragged me to the TV! I remember very clearly this song being telecasted every Sunday at 2.30 on a program called ‘Pon Maalai Pozhudu’ and I would eagerly wait to hear this song just to appreciate it’s Harmonies and the Chord progressions in the pallavi. While I never knew what was happening in the pallavi...the Chord progressions in the pallavi were new to my ears. The ending of the charanam was always a tough one for me as a kid as I could never keep in time with the rhythm structure! Another song ‘Chinna Chinna Vanna Kuyil’ from the same film was also one of my favourites...the reason I craved to listen to this song was that the vocal and bass lines were in counterpoint harmony. While I didn’t understand what counterpoint harmony was at that time...I could sense it was a not a run-of-the-mill song. This is where I met IR for the 3rd time through Counterpoint Harmony! Though I am still unaware as to who composed these song.
The next instance I remember about IR was in the film ‘Naayagan’...the Song was ‘Thenpandichee Mayile’...The song kept repeating in the RR almost throughout the film. If I am right this is the 1st film I sat down for the whole 150 minutes glued to the TV. My Dad would fast forward the songs ‘Naan Sirithal’, ‘Nila Athu Vanathu’ & ‘Nee Oru Khadhal’ saying that the songs were not good for children (this I clearly remember). The only song I was allowed to watch was ‘Thenpandichee Mayile’. I remember asking mum who was singing this song...and she would say it’s Kamal Hassan! Somewhere through the film when IR sings the same song...I clearly remember asking mum...’’but this is not Kamal Hassan singing right’’?...and she would insist...’’no no it’s kamal for sure’’...but I would keep on insisting that it’s a different voice...and she would keep on convincing me that Kamal can sing in different voices! ...well she never knew someone called Illayaraja existed...! This is where I met IR for the 4th time through his voice! Though I am still unaware as to who composed this song.
The next instance I remember about IR was in the film ‘Anjali’... where I used to run to the TV when I used to hear the Song ‘Anjali Anjali’...again the Harmony in the pallavi & the last 2 lines of the charanam drags me from anywhere in the house....even if I am outside playing cricket! Almost every time Cricket had to wait until I finished enjoying the Song...By this time I had a small notion as to what Harmony was...and whenever my late uncle sings this tune at home I would try to harmonise on my own...but would fail terribly!...This is the time my youngest brother was born and my mum would ask me to rock him on the pram so that she can cook...and I would put this song on our old cassette player and rock the baby...! This is where I met IR for the 5th time through his Music! still didn’t know who composed these beautiful songs.
The next instance I remember about IR was in the film ‘Thalapathi’...One Saturday evening Dad comes homes after work and asks me...’Prashan do you want to go and watch Rajini’s film?’ and that too in a Cinema?...as I had never been to a Cinema...I readily said yes! So Dad puts me on his old Vespa Scooter and tells me to cuddle him tight or else I will fall off the scooter...and we go to the Eros theatre in a place called Pamankade. Just me & Dad...and the tickets I believe was like Rs 5/- each for balcony then (now it’s a fortune!)...and Dad buys me Icy-choc first-up! The film starts and immediately I feel so bored...the reason being the whole movie is so gloomy!...I remember telling Dad that the story is similar to the one in the bible about Moses...and he replied...shut up and watch the film!
Me still feeling bored and wanting to go home...all of a sudden my mood changes and now I want to stay...the reason are the 2 songs ‘Sundari Kannal’ & ‘Raakkamma Kaiya’...asked Dad whether they would rewind...and he said they will chuck you out! Until that day...never have I heard any song with so much quality and Orchestration. While I didn’t understand the technical aspects so much being barely 9...I could feel that the song had something much much more in it than a lovely tune. The film was over and while coming home in our scooter my Dad says...’Mani’s films are always dark & gloomy’...then I remember asking Dad who is Mani? And he explained ‘the person who writes the story for the film’. This is where I started to get in to more technical details about film making after hearing about Mani Ratnam!...only after this did I figure out that there is someone called a Composer who creates the Music (Magic!!!)...and gets the singers to sing...and Rajini & Kamal never sings on screen! I guess ‘Thalapathi’ was the turning point in my life in 1991...and to date I have watched the film almost 30 times...just for its Background Scores! This is where I met IR for the 6th time through his Orchestration! ‘Raakkamma Kaiya’ gets 4th place in the world's top 10 most popular songs of all time by BBC...shame on the selectors...no National Award for Illayaraja Sir!

Contd.
The specialty of Raaja Sir’s Music is that he has the ability to take me to my childhood in a split second, like nothing else can. Every song of the GENIUS reminds me of a particular period of my childhood.
I have a collection of almost 3000+ Songs of the GENIUS and a lot of other sweet memories of each song too...which easily takes me to my childhood. These memories are treasured within me and I will
safely take them along with me to my grave one day!
A GENIUS does what it must, and talent does what it can. Any intelligent fool can make music sound beautiful, harmonically precise, more complex, and more technical…but it takes a touch of a GENIUS to fuse all these aspects in one song. The principle mark of a GENIUS is not perfection…but originality! When a true GENIUS appears in this world, you may know him by this sign, that the dunces are all in union against him. Talent is flame, but a GENIUS is FIRE.
I hear the Captain saying ‘as we are about to land, please bring your seats to the upright position and fold your tray tables’...so guess I have to end here...
...will pen again later...
Long live the GENIUS!

"...They had planned to present a tribute to music director Ilayaraja called ‘Do re mi’, that had apparently caught the maestro’s attention so much that “he himself asked us to record the track for him on August 6,” said an excited Paulraj, a doctor based in Belfast..."

Sri Rama Rajyam is a 'Complete Album' in all respects. SPB & Chitra after such a long hiatus! Great semi-classical melodies, rich and emotionally connecting orchestration, powerful lyrics and excellent rendering by Shreya, SPB, Chitra, Tippu and a gamut of other singers! 16 great tracks! Thanks crvenky for sharing. One interesting point Maestro made.
Till now what I have been thinking about 'inspiration' is all undone by him. Will never talk about this word anymore
He treats inspiration as a totally different beast. It happens when a director presents a situation to the music director and he get inspired to get the tune out of himself. No way this inspiration or 'getting inspired' is related to any other song or composition or any other music directors.
He instead calls that as imitation. He explained clearly taking some of MSV's finest compositions like 'Maambazhathu Vandu', 'Pesuvathu KiLiya' etc. All these songs have same meter, but composed to different tunes. We cannot call them as inspiration, but he calls them as 'imitation'.
Thalaivar thalaivar thaan :notworthy:

(http://thatstamil.oneindia.in/movies/music/2011/08/22-ilayaraja-back-form-srirama-rajyam-song-hit-aid0136.html)

Maybe he is saying it as he is in chennai or may be he admires IR because of IR's SADMA and some of his recent movies (cheeni kum, paa, etc) and/or hearing bits and pieces when he was in Chennai, but I feel Adnan (and many north celebrities) haven't truly experienced IR's musical variety/knowledge/experiments/effects to actually realise what he says.
Digression: From the above "The Hindu" interview: "...He may not have managed to pick up any Tamil but he says whenever he is singing in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam or any regional language, he ensures he gets the pronunciation right. “I insist on having a linguist who can coach me. I work on the words, and the emotion..." -

Did you guys notice one thing! Both Ponnar sankar & Sri Rama Rajyam actually are period films. But Raja looks like, was not asked to compose with the music/instruments of that time, a period film et all. That would not a case for directors like Maniratnam & Kamal. I guess the tunes can fairly be used to other films too which are of recent times. But that was not a barrier and Songs impresses as usual.
SriRamaRajyam looping past few days!
And Sri Rama Lera is of same raga of this song from Kathirunthua ValliValli(Mallu Vetti Minor) ?!? http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs=%27SNGIRR1886%27&lang=en

SKV, to me Sri Rama Lera sounds more like PanthuvarAli. (Piraye piraye, ROjAvai thAlAttum thendral, portions of Nalla nEram nEram)
KAthirundha malli is not a single ragam song... it has doses of Amruthavarshini, which is basically Panthuvarali without Ri and Dha, which, I guess, could've given you that thought (There was a detailed analysis done by Raagas and Suresh a while back on this song).
Plum
29th August 2011, 12:29 PM
KV, is there not a hint of Amruthavarshini as Sri Rama Lera begins(thoongadha vizhigaL reNdu mAdhiri irukkum)?
Also, is panthuvaralai = suba panthuvarali, the raagam that invokes pathos? Pyaar yeh jaane kaisa hai kooda adhu dhAnE?
KV
29th August 2011, 02:40 PM
Plum, I'm no expert on this topic either. I can't exacly recall the prelude, so I can't comment on that one. But the starting lines have an Agmark IR Panthuvarali touch (IMO pOtudrEn).
And PV <> SPV.
SPV, yes, generally sOgam milkings and all that. PV, has a more complicated, intriguing, almost meditative feel to it.
Technically the only diff I think is the ‘Ga’ (PV uses a sharper Ga) while rest of the notes are all same, but each ragam has a distinct flavour to it.

Plum,
KV is right. The 'kaatirundha malli malli' has traces of Amrithavarshini and other ragams. As he said raagas and me had discussed on this and came to the conclusion that it is a typical Raja raagam, which essentially means it is not a single ragam :) In that way SKV is right, 'Sreeramalera' is also a Raja raagam :) More seriously, no, there is no major relationship between Sreerama Lera and Kaatirundha malli song. As I had said earlier, Sreerama Lera has shades of Pantuvarali, Lalitha / Vasantha etc. A Raja raagam indeed, in every sense of the word.

Putham Pudhu Poo Poothadho/Piraiye Piraiye- same raagam or atleast same "Raja Raagam"? Is that Suba Pantuvarali? Or Panthuvarali?

Plum,
I would not undertake this mission :) This require someone like Vel who has swara gnanam, i.e. someone who can identify the swaras. I can't and so it is more based on the 'effect' created. I think both "Sreerama lera' and 'Putham Pudhu' would fall in Panthuvarali and not Subhapanthuvarali. The latter one is a very sad raga. As I said earlier, I 'feel' Vasantha / Lalitha in 'Sreerama'.

Checking hub after a gap. I liked most of the Sri rama Rajyam songs. My review:
Sri Rama Lera and Jagadananda Karaka are melodic delights. I dont need to write more about it. Sheer splendour. Sri Rama Lera is indeed a Raaja Raagam, as suresh rightly put it. There is Amritavarshini in the beginning and then there are traces of Panthuvarali and Vasantha as well. I am happy with the song (and also disappointed that Raaja fooled me with that amritavarshini teaser in the beginning. I have been waiting for another Amritavarshini from raaja since years. It is a favourite raaga of mine). Jagadaananda Kaaraka is a treat anyway.
Seetha rama charitham was an unusual song, from Ilaiyaraaja. It treads well along the old telugu songs (in mythological films). I dont know if we have an audience who can enjoy such songs but it definitely fits within the ethos of the film.
Devulle Mecchina is interesting although I think it would lose its sheen, in my playlist, over few months/years. But the song is an indicator of the kind of songs that Bapu usually takes in situations such as kids singing a story/philosophy(I think there was a song like that in Muthyala Muggu).
Gali Ningi is a wonderful pathos melody that takes us back to IR of 80s.
Ramayanamu Sri Rama is a very good composition in Sindhu Bhairavi raagam. Its been long time since Ilaiyaraaja composed in that raaga (in telugu).
Sita Seemantham is again a retro. It reminds me of IR of 80s. Completely vintage raaja, in charanams and interludes.
Rama Rama ane raaja mandiram is another typical Bapu song. It is as if Ilaiyaraaja studied the music in all the films of Bapu and then understood his grain and composed it. I dont know if he did it, but IR really caught Bapu-Ramana's grain (their taste for simple folk/vernacular elements) perfectly in this song.
Kalaya Nijama deserves to be a full-fledged song. Brilliant tune. For the FIRST TIME ever, Tippu impresses me (i never liked his voice somehow). Beautiful devotional feel in the song. Ilaiyaraaja betrays by keeping it as a short song. If only it was a 6minute song.
Idhi Pattabi is a typical 80s village folkish IR song. Might suit the film's situation and works more as "hey, IR used to give these kind of songs with this kind of interludes back in 80s" thought. And thats about it.
Other small songs are slokas/padhyams anyway and ilaiyaraaja had limited role, given their short duration.
Over all: It is a good telugu album that has Ilaiyaraaja's skill and even Bapu's signatures. Ilaiyaraaja must be commended for reasons such as - writing good music for pre-written lyrics, understanding the pulse of telugu audience(not new... but we have a newer generation of audience and he has to please a bigger bandwidth of audience), getting the premise of the film right and providing songs accordingly, a good balance between acoustic and synth instruments/sounds (he could have omitted synth a lot more, but then.. i guess thats a reality we all need to accept..and move on) that does sound fresh and new and yet evoking the sounds typically found in mythological films. and good recording quality also. Ilaiyaraaja did his best, given all these factors and the output is good enough, with few songs(if not all) bound to stick in our memory for long time. Thats well done.

Pyaar yeh jaane kEtu pAthen (didn't realize you were referring to the Rangeela song until I googled it). I don't see much similarity to Sri Rama Lera. One song that came to my mind while listening to Pyaar yeh was your chellam's 'Naacho jaise thumbi vaise'. My guess it that this is also a SGMPNS scale, but not Amruthavarshini for sure (it uses a smaller Ga). Vel/Usha/S65/Thumburu... neenga yaraachu dhaan theerpu sollanum.
Putham Pudhu Poo Poothadho/Piraiye Piraiye are PV based compositions, but with variations, I think.

'seetha seemantham' is set to a qawwali rhythm! yet another facet of IR's creativity in using a rhythm structure introduced to India by the persians/mughals for a film based rooted in hindu mythology! am not sure something like this has been attempted before!

Suresh, while on the subject, any guess why Seeta Seemantam has two charanams tuned for happy & sad moments (different rhythms)? I think the first charanam will be picturized in the palace when her seemantam is done with all gaiety and grandeur while the second charanam may be happening after she is sent to the forest by Rama.
On another note, I just noticed the two charanams of Sri Rama Lera has different tunes (may be ragas also?) and the bridging back to pallavi done seamless, as if we work out the same problem in maths in two different methods and arrive at the same answer.

barring seeta seemanthan, the rest of the songs have rhythm/tala structure more in tune with andhra folksy stuff, despite using north indian instruments such as dholak etc and the melodic structure(s) have strong resemblance to IR's use of certain ragas in telugu films during the 1980s! hence the telugu flavor

Venky,
I think your guess is right. Going by the words, the first charanam happens in the palace. The next charanam happens in the forest, in Valmiki's ashram. It is not sad but the gaiety is less. He slows down the rhythm to convey the absence of Sita's relatives in the function.

He, as usual has announced the title exactly 25 days before the release of the film!
Sathyan’s film titles have always conveyed what he wants to say through his films.
Sneha Veedu has got tremendous title value, as it tells the story of the deep love between a son played by Mohanlal and his mother played by Sheela and their attachment to their home.
Sneha Veedu is produced by Antony Perumbavoor under Aashirwad Cinemas banner. Mohanlal, Sheela, Padmapriya, Biju Menon, Innocent, KPAC Lalitha and new face Rahul Pillai are the actors in the film which has music by Ilayaraja.
Sneneha Veedu is slated for release on September 30 through Mohanlal’s distribution company Max Lab.

I am not sure if this is old news. Watched a jewellery commercial today (Malabar Gold). This had IR conducting a western classical orchestra in a classy opera house setting. The film has been very well shot. The theme music was quite powerful and sounded great (it was kind of familiar, not sure if it's a special composition for the brand). The commercial had an unconnected ending -of a heavily adorned bride taking his blessings... (I guess they had to somehow connect it to Gold!!!)
I had seen an earlier commercial of this brand a few months ago, in which IR sang with a little girl in a temple setting. This one seems to be new. Anyone has a video link?

Wow. Superb photos SKV. In some he looks like Karthik Raja, though I should be mentioning it in the reverse

Brilliant write up on Ilayaraja's re-recording for "Sri Rama Rajyam". Says Ilayaraja usually does re-recording with two keyboards. But for this film, he opted to use live instruments, with 70 musicians. He refused to go down the beaten track set by previous mythology based movies, and did something new & unique, almost like he re-did the screenplay with his rerecording. Producer says IR did the rerecording as if he was doing research in music.
