A brief study on the Ancient & Medieval "Tamil Ilakkiya Nookal" of Tamil Nadu
(1) An Introduction to "Thamil Sanga(m)" Ilakkiya Noolkal
The history of the Tamils of South India could be traced as early as B.C.1250, a period prior to the submergence of a part of the Tamil country with Kumarikkandam around B.C.650 in an Under-Sea Avalanche. Much is not known of the Literary works of the period prior to B.C.625 being the period of First Thamil Sangam (B.C.1250-625), as many Compositions of this period were lost to us in this sea disaster.
From B.C.650 onwards we have many Tamil Literary Works and Compositions being of the periods of Second Tamil Sangam (B.C.650-325) and Third Thamil Sangam (B.C.325-A.D.350). The Poetic Single Verses (Thani Paadalakal), Poetic Ten Verses (Paththu Paadalkal), while the third variety were the Poetic Work of Many Verses (Nedum Paadalkal) composed in the audience of the Tamil Poets of the Second and Third Thamil Sangams were classified and compiled into a Collection (Thokaikal) in single volumes, during the later part of the period of Third Thamil Sangam by selected Tamil Poets on the instructions of the Pandiya and at times by Chera kings.
