Vijay Sethupathy’s 'Rummy' gets red hot - sify

The opening of Vijay Sethupathy’s Idharkuthane Aasaipattai Balakumara (IAB) has made his next releases red hot in the trade.

There is a race between two of his films Rummy and Padminiyum Panniyarum to be the next release of the most wanted star.

Rummy has published their first look in today’s papers. It is a village collage romance set in the 1980’s and is directed by K Balakrishnan. It features Vijay Sethupathi, Gayathri, Inigo Prabhakaran and Aishwarya in the lead roles.

D Imman has composed the music for the film which has Remya Nambeesan singing a song. The audio launch of the film is to take place by mid- October with the film slotted for a November end release.

Look at Karthi. Never say never but it's fine to do action films once in a while so long as he is committed to continue doing good films like Dhanush.

Rummy (2014 : Tamil : 2h20m)
Written & Directed by K. Balakrishnan

Music by D.Imman

Banner Sri Valli Studio & JSK Film Corporation

Starring : Inigo Prabhakaran, Vijay Sethupathi, Iyshwarya, Gayathri, Soori, many Love haters & few Love supporters

Year 1987, Joseph & Sakthi become pals for more than one reason - same college, same hostel room, sharing ones happiness and depression, where Sakthi holds Joseph morally after he losses his mother. So they as students create other friends notably Arunachalam and of coarse enemies too. In one such clash with another student Joseph & Sakthi are thrown out of their hostel room by the administration, and with the help of Arunachalam they dwell in an rented house in the neighboring village. They two fall in love in much normal situations where their love interests Sorna & Meenakshi are quite scared about their family coming to know about their relationship. What makes their fear peculiar is that, the village big shot is the one who simply hates people who fall in love. A lawless village where humans are amputated just for peeping at their village girls. The love affair of the couples gets more intense that Joseph elopes with Sorna bringing down a full set of agitations among the haters. Thus a hunt is put on. When Sakthi comes to know about the whole affair, he along with Arunachalam should find the eloped couple before its too late. Not to forget Sakthi's own relationship with Meenakshi, which leads him straight to a dark place which he never knew existed.

Rummy is a Drama, not an intense one but a disturbing one that stays with you at least for a while. Its at no point of time turns out to be thriller. Balakrishnan just locks the narration and edits it in such a way to keep the suspense rolling. Its just a neat tale between love and hatred, where Love seems to win but taking the hatred path. Its goes a step forward and shows what hatred is prepared to do at any cost to win over Love. So basically its a movie for Drama genre lovers who have the right and whole time to appreciate the depth of movie making. For me, the rural set-up is more than enough to enjoy this movie. Each and every portrayal was splendid and nicely played. I simply adored all the houses and their interiors seen in this movie. The streets, temples, cinema hall, the village people watching "oliyum oliyum", etc., and mainly our cultural way of life was captured thoroughly.

Vijay Sethupathi is himself in this movie. You see him on screen just like watching him on a TV show or in audio launches. The naturalism that his character demands is full here. Still there are few occasions where he exhibits some excellent emotions. Basically Joseph (played by VS) is a character just as the others, and where he becomes highlighted is when the game starts to roll around him. Its like all players are waiting for this particular card. Prabhakaran does a neat job well supported by Iyshwarya. VS & Iyshwarya romantic episodes works just fine. The well-side episodes are sure to put a smile on your face. Gayathri came in quite promising, but due to extended screen presence you feel like she has "that face" all the time, every time, but her voice was intriguing though. Again the lack of presentation of several characters makes Soori character Arunachalam a bit out of place when things start to take an ugly turn.

Imman music was quite aggressive. Think he got well the point from Balakrishnan that its not a breezy love story but a rugged one. So his songs, even though pictured in some fabulous rural environment, sound as though there were knifes at our throats. Few places BGM is really top notch, especially towards the end. It mounts the right pitch by drawing us close to the courageous finale. Premkumar is at his best. He has captured the interiors quite artistically. With the apt instructions from Balakrishnan all the shots called in for were quite natural and puts you in between the situation. Raja Mohammed cleanly cuts as per the slate, but its Balakrishnan who stumbles in quite a few parts where he goes back and forth for too long and quite often. The costumes for the lady artists gets a high mention here. Lovely colors and traditionally worn. Those small jeweleries and wonderfully decorated hair with flowers were pleasing. The men wore some striking coloured colored t-shirt and lungis which looked so nice on all the artists.

Rummy places its bets on the characters, but it often deflects itself between love and violence. When romance takes its own sweet time to develop, the violence cuts in sharp and short which put multiple questions in your mind. Taut to be realistic, the same characters circling around takes away that aspect. The lady characters know-about were kept away from us for too long and when we come to know who they are, gives a "I saw it coming miles away" pride. If it was told to us well in hand, each crossing of the baddies would have put a thorn under our seat. Other than a handful of such defects, those that does not concern a viewer, Rummy stays inside the circle it draws around it.

You got to know the card game rummy and its vocabulary to follow the next few lines. Balakrishnan had played INDIAN RUMMY as per the rules with 2 JOKERS as his principle characters - Joseph & Sakthi. He DRAWS the situation with TWO PACKS of love story DISCARDING his cards one by one, the other good & bad characters, and MEDLING up to a strong set. He voluntarily drops POINTS, certain intensity in the advancement, to bring up his ACE card. Finally he accommodates the joker in the DECK and does his SHOW with FULL LIFE => Ace, King, Queen.
