Yennai Arindhaal' all areas sold out

Thala Ajith's Yennai Arindhaal all areas have been sold out. It is gearing up for a grand release on February 5. The film which went to revising committee has been cleared with a UA certificate with some minor voice muting, which the original committee had given.

Recent entrant to Tamil film distribution and production MK Enterprise who was the first to purchase the Chennai city rights has also grabbed Coimbatore territory, which is considered a fort for Thala Ajith.

Though there was a tough competition to snap NSC area which is the biggest territory in Tamil Nadu, famous distributor Lateef Ravi has got it. Initially there were reports that Mannan Films will be doing NSC.

Madurai has gone to Alagar Films while Trichy_thanjavur has been taken by Bharathan Films. Both are regular AM Ratnam distributors. Salem has gone to Shiva while Tirunelveli-Kanyakumari has gone to Ruben who distributed Lingaa.

Directed by Gautham Menon, Yennai Arindhaal will be releasing on February 5 and the overseas content has been dispatched already. And in many places the film has been cleared by overseas censors.

Gautham Menon hires script consultants

Two talented filmmakers — Sridhar Raghavan and Thiagarajan Kumararaja — have been roped in as script consultants for filmmaker Gautham Vasudev Menon’s much-awaited film with actor Ajith Kumar, Yennai Arindhaal .

This is quite uncommon as filmmakers, both in the past and present times, have been reluctant to work with screenwriters.

So, why now? “I knew the film was going be a ‘star vehicle’ but I didn’t want to write it like a ‘star vehicle’. But then, my ears were ringing with words such as ‘mass’ and what fans would expect. I needed someone to clarify and show me the way,” says Gautham.

When asked to describe his latest film, he says it can be considered the story of a 13-year-old boy, in the mould of his earlier, much-acclaimed superhit, Vaaranam Aayiram , which starred actor Suriya in a double role.

“Sridhar is a good friend, who has always been supportive. When I started writing the film, I discussed it with him and he liked what he heard. He suggested a number of ways in which I could take the narrative forward. At every stage, he opened several doors for me to explore,” Gautham says.

Thiagarajan’s help was sought to resolve the climax of the film.

“He is a great filmmaker. He too liked what he heard. When I couldn’t resolve the climactic portions of the film, he suggested I emphasise on certain moments in the script, which I had overlooked. Again, he opened some doors for me,” says the director.

This is not the first time Gautham is sharing credits with another writer.

“Well, the story of my last film, Neethane En Ponvasantham , was written by Reshma. In this film, both the filmmakers have helped me take the narrative forward. I thought they should be credited as ‘script consultants’ for the film,” he says.

First came Sivaji, then Billa, followed by Dasavatharam

Take a blank white paper and put a small circle on it. Add about 5 'into' sign (a cross) on its circumfrence. What you are looking at is Paris and the cinema halls our films releases.

First came Sivaji, then Billa and followed by Dasavatharam to make the next thing possible - around the first circle draw another bigger circle and now add about 8 'into' marks on it. Now you are watching the outskrits of Paris. Thats what these 3 films gained us, the territory.

Now, add another circle, bigger and around the 2nd circle; add 5 into signs, and now you are looking at a zone much away from the first 2 circles, meaning, we have left Paris.

Our films have started releasing at larger scales. Thanks to all the distributors, esp. the films and its stars. Lingaa & YA are making it possible and in a few months if Uthama Villain releases, history will be repeating - First came Lingaa, then YA followed by UV.

At this rate, our Arch Rival Bollywood will be nowhere soon, and time to take on Hollywood.

Thiagarajan Kumararaja

Been saying it for a while now, TK-Ajith would be a marvelous combo, decorating it would be SPB Charan-YSR. TK-Ajith-SPB Charan give a damn about certitification and will make a movie for specific audience which will be crisp and elegant. I am not bothered about its commerical sucess, but I am sure that it would be a big treat for people like me. Hope it happens soon, anything is fine - Thriller, gangster or drama - I am in.

YENNAI ARINDHAAL SWOT ANALYSIS

They were supposed to join hands way back in 2003 itself for Kaakha Kaakha, but somehow their most awaited union didn't happen until 2014. We are talking about Thala Ajith and director Gautham Menon who are all geared up to present their ambitious first outing Yennai Arindhaal to the worldwide audience from Feb 5 onwards. Let's do a quick SWOT of Yennai Arindhaal now to analyze how it fares on the pre-release expectation front.

Strengths

Undoubtedly Ajith in his various looks, suiting the character's time travel, leads the list of strengths. The goodwill that he has among the general audience is forever on the rise, while his huge fan base continues to increase with every passing film. Gautham has made it clear that Ajith didn't impose his own conditions in the name of 'mass' and that he was such a co-operative and non-intrusive actor who was willing to do what the director was asking. Their combo is delightful on paper and has every chance of being as deadly as possible.

Producer A.M.Rathnam is someone who doesn't spare any expense, as already proved with many grand blockbusters. Ajith - GVM - AMR - a mean trio indeed. The involvement of Aaranya Kaandam fame Thiagarajan Kumararaja in the scripting department, has also increased the expectations among action movie buffs.

Yennai Arindhaal's teaser and trailer have become major sensations with just the right amount of 'Ajithisms' and generous doses of the Gautham stamp. Both these clips are among the most popular in South Indian cinema, and have aided in the hype factor for sure.

Not to forget, the music by Harris Jayaraj which is rocking the charts - online, in ringtones / caller tunes and also in the FM space. The Harris - Gautham combo has repeated its charm without any doubt, and there is much eagerness to see how the visuals have turned out. Unakkenna Venum Sollu and Mazhai Vara Pogudhe have the potential to be among the best song visuals this year, on the evidence of the pre-release buzz. The hopes on Harris' BGM score are also very high, given the film's genre and his prior expertise in this department.

Dan MacArthur's visuals and new ideas in the trailer have given us a taste of things to come. The film definitely carries a sleek, international look and the Australian is a powerhouse among the crew. Anthony is a constant in Gautham's films as the editor and we can expect some of his magical expertise in the film's packaging, particularly in the already popular title song. Will it match the Karka Karka standard? is THE oft-heard question among fans

Trisha and Anushka hold massive appeal among all sections of audiences all over the world, and their presence is sure to pull in the neutral family audiences. Vivek is another noteworthy addition to the cast, in a role which would provide laughter as well as some food for thought, in the veteran's inimitable style.

Yennai Arindhaal is a solo release and won't see any competition during its first 8 days at least. The release is massive in overseas markets (touted as Ajith's biggest), while back home in TN and the rest of South India, we can expect big screen counts too. The stage is being set very well for a big box-office harvest.

Weaknesses

The U/A censor chit rules out the film of entertainment tax exemption and this might hamper the financial prospects of the stakeholders, if the film doesn't gross in a huge way. That said, the film hasn't received any cuts and it ought to be a family friendly affair, despite the action oriented genre.

The film's run time is a generous 2 hours 56 mins 48 secs. Of late, we have seen almost all such long-running films being criticized for their run-time, and one would only hope that Yennai Arindhaal would have enough grip to arrest viewers over a 3 hour duration. But Thala fans wouldn't be complaining one bit as each minute of their icon on screen is a bonus for them.

Whether Yennai Arindhaal has as much hype as say Mankatha or Billa 2 or Arrambam is questionable. The delays in release and the non-happening release weekend have also played a part in the sort of understated build-up to the movie's release. Nevertheless, the advance bookings so far, are already looking promising.

Opportunities

The biggest phenomenon among Tamil movie fans recently is talk on the 100 crores club. Yennai Arindhaal would be Ajith's golden opportunity to mark his entry to this club with its worldwide gross collections. Though Arrambam has already made its entry to this club, when we consider its Telugu dubbed version too, Ajith would be looking at cracking this club with just the original Tamil version alone. Recently we have had the likes of Vijay and Vikram achieving this feat with their Kaththi and 'I' respectively. With a solo release and a big screen count all over, the platform is pretty decent for Yennai Arindhaal.

Gautham would also be looking at this movie as his chance to break back into the elite creamy layer of Tamil directors. He has been pretty low-key over the past few years or so, and what better than an Ajith film to storm back into the limelight. The film looks right in Gautham's comfort zone as an urban, emotional police thriller and the signs are promising.

Arun Vijay's make-over is being unanimously raved by all. The work that he has done on his body and styling is kick-ass. Yennai Arindhaal has to be this hard working and talented actor's long-awaited break to the next level, and on the evidence of his own confident words and the trailer, he is sure to have matched Ajith shot for shot. Let's wait to see his hard work unfold on screen.

Parvathy Nair is another unknown face who would be looking at Yennai Arindhaal to kick-start her Tamil career.

Threats

The release time of Yennai Arindhaal isn't exactly promising as there is a big line-up in the weeks after 5th, with the likes of Anegan, Enakkul Oruvan and Kaaki Sattai waiting in the wings. We also have Shamitabh releasing on Feb 6th and the impact ought to be felt in some markets for sure. But if the opening weekend's word of mouth is positive, Yennai Arindhaal has enough inherent muscle to withstand all manner of threats. Of course, we have piracy which may eat into the film's theatrical revenue as always.

Best wishes to Ajith, Gautham and team for a grand success. We are eager to know what you guys have in store.

The King of Opening Thala Ajith's Yennai Arindhaal is all set to be released worldwide on February 5. As per sources in the trade there will not be any midnight or 3am shows.

There were reports that theaters in the outskirts of Chennai were gearing up for early morning shows right from 12.30 AM. The First Day First Show of Yennai Arindhaal will be now held at the traditional fan show theatre Kasi in Jaferkhanpet in Chennai at 5 AM in the morning.

All other screens going for early morning shows will be after the start of Kasi screening. On Monday when Kasi theatre didn't start the reservation for 4 AM show fans went berserk and later cops had to be called in to control the angry fans who went on a rampage.

Mayajaal, the largest multiplex in Chennai has allotted nearly 63 shows for the first day and as the tickets are sold out they will be soon adding more shows.

Mean time, other famous screens including Sathyam, Chrompet Vetri and AGS cinemas are likely to open the advance booking by today say the sources.

Trade is expecting a record opening for the film.

Daniel Balaji

It’s a role with much value and importance, though being short and sweet. There is always an expectation when it is a Gautham Menon film, and with me joining him again after Vettaiyadu Vilaiyadu. The character has no name and no dialogues too. The possibilities of this role haven’t been explored much in the film though it has good scope. All I can say is that Yennai Arindhaal would be a total mass film for Ajith fans.

This is THE BIGGEST EVER release for any Tamil movie. The movie is already considered among the distributors as a super hit purely based on the advance bookings.

Home is where the stories are

Gautham Vasudev Menon became a filmmaker at a time when the Tamil heroe had already elevated stalking to an accepted social principle and moral policing of women became his fundamental duty. In slow, incremental steps, Gautham Menon began re-sketching the male protagonist as a chivalrous and courteous human being, who is respectful towards women. As a result, he became a big hit with the women.

The liberal attitudes and slick style that permeates his films were deemed an ideal foil for actor Ajith, who is also identified as a stylish, dignified and chivalrous human being by his fans and the public at large.

After several unsuccessful attempts to team up, Gautham’s third instalment of what is now being called his ‘cop trilogy’ (the first two were Kaakha Kaakha and Vettaiyadu Vilaiyadu), Yennai Arindhal, is ready for release on February 5. “I was asked if I could start work on the film right away while I was still working on the Simbu film. Yennai Arindhaal is perhaps the quickest film in my career. And this is also a film which was written for Ajith,” says Gautham at Harris Jayaraj’s recording studio.

Despite being explicitly asked by Ajith to not include anything to massage his ‘superstar’ status, Gautham guarantees that there are at least five ‘applause’ moments in this film. “In Arrambam, there is a moment when he looks sharply at someone touching his shoulder. I have loved some of the moments from his earlier films. These are there but the audience will forget they are watching an Ajith film 15 minutes into it. This is by far his best work,” he adds.

The tension between the desire to do a movie with Gautham’s sensibilities and at the same time contain the urge to exploit his image was resolved, he says, by incorporating real-life traits of Ajith into the narrative. “I know what he would do if there was a woman walking beside him towards a door. We have put him in clothes that he would probably wear in real life himself. In this way, the audience doesn’t’ have to really suspend their disbelief,” he reveals.

While he hesitates a bit before admitting that the ‘cop trilogy is complete’, he describes the film as a biography of Sathyadev from the age of 13. “I can’t tell you what he plays in the film because that is what the film is about. Although there is no scene like this, I would say that it is the story of a 13-year-old boy who wanted to become a doctor but ended up being someone else,” he says.

The first two earlier cop films made by Gautham — Kaakha Kaakha with actor Suriya and Vettaiyadu Vilaiyadu starring Kamal Haasan — were runaway successes and instantly caught the public imagination. They are also now part of pop-culture. However, they also attracted sharp criticism for ‘glorifying encounter and extra-judicial killings’. Suriya plays a daring ‘encounter specialist’ in Kaakha Kaakha and the film is said to have given policemen a PR make-over.

Gautham defends his creative decision: “There are good people and bad people everywhere. There are people within the system who are trying to change it and doing good work. I understand that bureaucracy, hierarchy and managing politics is not easy. But I respect the fact that they are at least out there, doing stuff. Also, I wasn’t trying to justify encounters. I was presenting a cop’s perspective and this does not necessarily mean it has the author’s endorsement.”

He further states, “If my tale has to revolve around a protagonist and there is action around him, I can only imagine him to be someone from the police or the Army. People like us don’t encounter violence on a daily basis unless they are in a road-rage situation or are in college fighting over a girl.”

While many would still disagree with his argument, it is a fact that Gautham Menon’s movies are regulated by a matrix of strong middle-class values.

There is a ‘biographical’ element to all of his films which, he says, can be traced back to growing up in a middle-class household. “Everything that I write is mostly what I have experienced with my father, growing up,” he declares. Specifically talking about the much-loved romance sequences in his films, he credits his father for it. “Most of the romance in my films has been inspired by my father. I have seen him holding my mother’s feet and talking to her. A lot of Neethane En Ponvasantham, a lot of Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaaya and a lot of Vaaranam Aayiram came from him. My knowledge of books, the way I speak, have all been from him. Vaaranam Aayiram, in a way, was catharsis, my way of holding on to his memories.” While this has been Gautham Menon’s trademark, so to speak, it has also been a constant source of criticism. He has been called out for being cocooned in the comforts of the middle-class, unwilling to look at the harsh realities of life. “That’s how I like it. Take romance for instance: My parents have never been a problem in my life. I had the kind of father who would say ‘Don’t stand and talk to the girl on the street. Bring her home’. I have never sat and analysed a scene when I have to write a romantic one. It just flows,” he says.

Yet, he is well aware that he has come to represent a certain kind of values through his films. In the next 10 years, Gautham Menon says that he wants to move into a ‘different zone’. “If people are expecting only a certain kind of films from me, I want to change that. I want to make shorter films (around two hours) — in different genres. I would have done it with Dhruva Natchathiram itself, but Suriya didn’t let that happen. But there are also people who say that there are takers for the way I represent, for instance, women in my movies. They say, ‘why are you bothered about few people who say they don’t like it?’ I don’t want to be predictable, but that doesn’t mean it is necessarily going to be about people in the slums.”

He reveals that he is already testing waters with Yennai Arindhaal despite the fact that he was told that it might not go well with a section of the audience. “I have made a couple of bold moves in this film, which is in the modern space. Even though we haven’t shown anything happening and it has been left to the audience’s imagination,” he hints.

But there are a few things he would never do in his movies. “Even if I am writing the character of a woman who is a bad person, I would never expose it to the audience,” he says.

The next is the obvious one: “I can’t take it when fathers are being made villains. I wept when I saw Thavamaai Thavamirundhu even though the father was a lot different from mine. I just couldn’t take it when the father in Maattraan was made the villain. I couldn’t stand it.”

This is THE BIGGEST EVER release for any Tamil movie. The movie is already considered among the distributors as a super hit purely based on the advance bookings.

Movie is going to be kickass too...no doubts on that.

"After Rajini"...."After Endhiran"..... talks won't be there anymore. Thala is going to set a bench mark now.

Corleone, where have you been all these days, months, years? :-) Anybody had the luck to watch the premier show with free passes?

I guess we will get the correct count tomorrow. Due to last minute charting many theatres are not listed in the paper ads (same scenario all over India).

PVR Bangalore has listed Feb 6th as the release date. Are they not releasing on Feb 5th? They are going to miss big time.
