Venkat Prabhu’s Biriyani is all set to release big on 20th December. About the growth he has seen from Chennai 28 to Mankatha and until today, a very humble Venkat Prabhu says, “I just got lucky”. The director has also signed his next project with Suriya. The actor will apparently join Venkat Prabhu after completing the Lingusamy project.

Meanwhile talking about the project, Venkat Prabhu said that it is a proper commercial entertainer and that kids would love the movie. “Suriya asked me for an interesting and a different script. I gave him the one liner and he just loved it. I also promised to give my best for the project,” added the director.

'Suriya vs Suriya' or 'Suriya and Suriya'?

Suriya’s project with Venkat Prabhu, tentatively titled Kalyana Raman, will have the versatile actor essaying a double role. We had earlier reported that the movie will be a fiction fantasy with extensive VFX. And, with Venkat Prabhu’s ideas, the movie throws a lot of possibilities.

Known for experimenting with looks, even within the same movie, Suriya’s makeover for the movie has already raised a lot of expectations. The last time he appeared in a dual role was in KV Anand’s Maattrraan, in which he portrayed conjoined twins – one shy and another impish. Vaaranam Aayiram had him as a perfect father and a lovesick son. However, in Perazhagan, he portrayed two roles – a hunchback and a boxer - that oppose each other. The boxer’s three cut sideburn was the order of the day, then.

The bet on Kalyana Raman is between whether the Suriya(s) will be friends or foes. Let speculations wait – Suriya and Venkat Prabhu might have something wild, better and bigger!

Shruti Haasan to romance Suriya yet again!
After starring together in 7aum Arivu, Suriya and Shruti Haasan are all set to pair up once again. According to a reliable source, the two will be seen in Venkat Prabhu's upcoming film, which has music by Yuvan Shankar Raja. While the pooja launch of the film will be held in a city studio on April 14, the actual shoot is expected to begin in June.

The source says, "Venkat's team had approached Shruti for the project, and she liked the way her character has been shaped. It gives her scope to bring out the humorous side in her. And since she has already worked with Suriya in 7aum Arivu, her debut film in Tamil, the two share a comfortable equation. Shruti is working out her dates now; she has committed herself to a couple of films in Tamil, Hindi and Telugu, and hopes to accommodate this film."

An official announcement regarding the complete cast and crew is expected later this month.

Why was there an important change in the Suriya - Venkat Prabhu film!

Right from his debut - Chennai 600028 till his latest - Biriyani, director Venkat Prabhu has always stuck with the same team. However, in the ace director’s next yet-to-be-titled movie with Suriya, he has opted for someone other than his regular DoP Sakthi Saravanan. RD Rajasekhar, who had been a part of Suriya's movies such as Kaakha Kaakha, Ghajini and Sillunu Oru Kadhal, is the chosen DoP for this movie, called 'Suriya 31' by fans.

When our Behindwoods correspondent contacted Sakthi, regarding this, he said, “I am busy with a Telugu movie starring Gopichand with music by Ghibran. The makers of Mirchi are funding this one. That's why I could not be a part of Venkat's next. Also, a new creative perspective from behind the lens is always good”

The Suriya - Venkat Prabhu film, produced by Studio Green, was kicked off on the auspicious Tamil New Year day with a formal pooja ceremony.

Nayanthara and Amy Jackson to romance Suriya

Chennai: A dual role for heroes is the order of the day in Kollywood. Suriya joins the long list after Rajini, Kamal and others and plays a double role in his upcoming flick with Venkat Prabhu. In the yet to be titled movie which was launched recently, one of the roles Suriya will be seen in is as a ghost.

Loosely inspired by films like Hollywood’s Hello Ghost and the Tamil film, Kalyanaraman, sources say that Suriya who goes to any extent to suit the role he plays, will have a different look for the ghost character. The Anjaan actor has two heroines for company.

While the buzz is that Nayanthara has already been finalised, talks are on with the sexy Amy Jackson to play the other heroine. Reports suggest that Shruti Haasan was the initial choice, but the filmmakers are not opting for her now.

The daughter of Ulaganayagan Kamal’s debut film was 7 Am Arivu which received a lukewarm response from the box-office. Yet another addition to the technical side is Madan Karky who has taken the onus of the writing the dialogues.

Mohan to play villain in Poochandi?
There are a lot of expectations from the Venkat Prabhu-Suriya film. The latest we hear is that veteran actor Mike Mohan is all set to play the lead villain the film. The shoot for the movie titled Poochandi will go on floors after Suriya wraps up his work on Anjaan.

The reports are that it was Venkat Prabhu who approached Mohan with the script and that the actor instantly gave his nod for the film. It would be interesting to see the romantic hero of the '80s in a negative avatar.

The latest on Venkat Prabhu's film with Suriya is that the team has finalized a title for it — Masss. Speculations were rife that the film had been titled Poochandi, and that it would be a horror film.

However, we hear that the film will fall under the horror genre, but will not exactly be spooky. A source close to the unit says, "Venkat will start shooting for the film from July 14 in Chennai. Nayanthara and Amy Jackson, who play the female leads in the film, are expected to join the team from August. RD Rajashekar will be handling the camera."

We also hear that the film, as was being presumed, will not be shot in the 3D format. "The story is kid-friendly. It will resemble tales that are usually narrated to kids to scare them," the source says.

Venkat Prabhu’s Masss team will head to Bulgaria
Work on Masss, director Venkat Prabhu's film with Suriya, is already on in full swing. While the actor did a photoshoot to finalize his look in the film a couple of days ago, the team commenced shooting the film in Chennai yesterday. Suriya has started work on the film and Nayanthra will join the team from August 9. We hear that the film, touted to be a 'kid-friendly, horror entertainer', will be majorly shot in north India and Bulgaria.

A source close to the unit says, "The first schedule will be shot in a house on the ECR stretch, and the team will continue filming in Ooty and Kerala, and certain places like Kullu Manali in the north. More importantly, a few important sequences will be shot in Bulgaria, and the unit is working out the schedule plans for it."

Buzz is that actor Jayaram will soon join the cast of Venkat Prabhu's next film, Masss. We hear that the actor will be playing a crucial role in the film, which has Suriya, Nayanthara and Amy Jackson in the lead.

A source from the unit says, "We shot in the city for a few days last month. We will be shooting again in the city from this week with Suriya. Jayaram is the latest addition to the cast and he may join the shoot from the next schedule. He will be playing a prominent role in this kid-friendly film."

Interestingly, Jayaram has earlier worked with Venkat Prabhu inSaroja in a negative role but we hear that he is not playing a baddie this time. He will also be seen in Kamal Haasan's upcoming Uttama Villain.

Supernatural characters visible only to Suriya
Work on Venkat Prabhu's next film Masss, featuring actor Suriya in the lead, seems to be progressing at a brisk pace. Sources say that the unit, which has been shooting for over 15 days, was recently spotted on the ECR stretch canning a few important sequences for the film.

If sources close to the unit of the film are to be believed, the film has three supernatural characters in it. Says a source, "The film has three spirits played by Sreeman, Karunas and Daniel of Itharkku Thane Aasaipattai Balakumara fame. These three supernatural characters will be visible only to Suriya's eyes in the film."

It may be recalled that sources in the unit of the film had categorized the film as a horror movie that will not exactly be spooky. Nayanthara and Amy Jackson play the female leads in the film, which the makers say will be a complete entertainer.

I hope and sincerely wish that the Anjaan Effect does not continue with this movie too, for that for any movie.

Its good that such comparisons are drawn out, but there should be more wider data collected to assert a matter.

I am generalising things here and not pointing the finger at any particular person.

The poster in question comes under the category called "Main/Floating Head" poster. Some more movie poster exemples are :

Bangkok Dangerous, Intruders, Ghost Protocol, Salt, Face off, Amazing SPiderman 2, Hanibal, Where the devil hides, Horns, Rambo, Prince of Persia, Spirit, Fracture, Thor, Smiley, etc.,

So looking at all of these, can we assume that all of them are identical ? Or is it wise to call that they all fall under the same type called "Floating Head".

The origin of this style can be drawn from comic front pages, made famous by Alan Moore in "V for Vendetta" in 1982. Before that, there were "Retro Montage" posters which depicted mostly the war film genres. An ancient style did exist, which was famously used in the 60s and 70's for murder/suspense movies where a character occupies half of the poster - be it a shadow or a desperate screaming girl or a menancing villan's face or a dude with a gun (as you could have seen in Jigarthanda movie poster [Ref : Lady in the Lake (1958)]

To conclude : Avatar and Bourne posters are much more identical than any poster samples taken around this area - The right corner is blacked out to expose an oblivion kind of nature.

Coming to this poster : The highlight is the nose bridge. I always wanted some one to exploit this feature in Surya's profile, and finally VP has done it. A suspenseful poster which reveals something out of ordinary about the character Surya plays.
