The story of Atma Lingaa - Murudeshwar Temple, Karnataka

Ravana prayed to Lord Shiva to obtain 'Atma Lingaa' and attain the power of immortality and invincibility. Scared of getting granted of such a power, as Shiva is very generous with his devotees, Naradha played a trick with the help of Vishnu on Ravana, that when Shiva appeared before him with Parvathi, Ravana, immersed in the beauty of Parvathi, asked Shiva for Parvathi (in the sense of a look-alike) instead of Atma Lingaa. Shiva Granted him his wish which leads Ravana to the fire pits at the core of the earth (Pathalam) and get married to Parvathi, the daughter of the King.

When he returns to Lanka, he realises that he was cheated, a victim of a Mind Trick. So, he pledges to gain the attention of Shiva once again. But this time his prayers were not heard by Shiva, so he started commiting self-scarifice by cutting one by one his body parts, starting with his hands. When he finally chops of his head, Shiva appears overwhelmed by Ravana's devotion, restores him completely and offers him the Atma Lingaa he seeked, under one Condition - If the Lingaa is grounded, it would loose it power, that is, the powers will return back to Shiva Himself.

Gods above become very anxious over the power Ravana would get. This time their representative, Naradha, seeks the help of Ganasha. Ganesha master minds the plan to ground the Lingaa and approches Ravana as a Pligrim Child. He accompanies Ravana on their journey back to Lanka, and at the same time Vishnu tricks by hiding the sun in such way that it seems to be dusk. Dusk, the time for Ravana to do his evening prayers. So, Ganesha offers him his help by holding the Lingaa for Ravana while he is doing his ritual. Astonished when Ravana asks him not to put it on the ground, Ganesha, says to him that he cannot hold the Lingaa for long, but he can until the timely call of 3 times, calling out for Ravana to take it back. Eventually, Ravana reacts quite late, 3 calls end, and Ganesh places the Lingaa on the ground.

Angry, when Ravana was about to strike, Vishnu removes the fake dusk, and its then Ravana realises that he been tricked for the second time. Fierce, he breaks the Lingaa into pieces which gets scatered all around a radius of 20 to 30 miles - where temples have been erected around these pieces of Atma Lingaa.

The cloth covering the Atma Lingaa is found in Murudeshwar Temple. Don't forget to visit its caves.

Tarakaksha, Viryana & Vidunmali, famously addressed as Tripurasuras, are siblings of the demon king Tarakasura. Tripurasuras somehow learnt that if you please the God, they grant you what you wish, so they started doing severe penance praying to Brahma. The Creator eventually appeared and granted without any hesitance all they wished but under one condition that they follow the rituals and verses in daily basis. The Boon were => 3 forts which cannot be destoryed alone and its visibilty, that is the location of either of the fort, will be known for a breif moment in only 1000 years. Tripurasuras went ahead and contructed 3 forts with - Gold (occupied Tarakaksha), silver (occupied Viryana) and iron occupied by (Vidunmali). Now that they have this invincibilty, they started to conquer everything, including the God's own land.

Panicking, the Gods went to Vishnu. Hearing the peculiar boon been granted, Vishnu analysed and zeroed the loop-hole. He did many actions, and founded a illusionary relegion that was spread by Naradha, which stated that Heaven-Earth-Hell co-exists. This science of illusion got spread over the years in the 3 forts, now famously known as Tripuri. The time mark of 1000 years was nearing and the new found religion took hold of Tripuri, crashing the existing verses and rituals, thus exiting the contract made with Brahma.

Time now to plot the destruction of the 3 forts, as penetrating them one by one is out of question because they are indestructible individually and can be destroyed only together, not even a nano-second apart. They seek the help of Shiva, who plots the war strategy of taking down Tripuri when the right moment comes, that is when it is visible for a short while once 1000 years. He assembled his loyalists and formed the deadliest team - The earth, his chariot ; Bhrama, his charioter ; Sun & Moon, the wheels ; Meru, his bow and finally Vishnu himself the arrow, Pinaka (thus Vishnu gets another name Pinakapani).

With the ultimate arsenal in his pocession, Shiva launched Pinaka at the ripe moment which shattered Tripuri into pieces. Tripurasuras & other demons meet instant death with that single shot. The shattered forts landed in 3 different palces, pieces of one over the bed of River Narmada. Thus, these peices became celestial 'special' stones, quite rare and unique and thus, got the name Narmada Lingaa or Bana-Lingaa or Svayambhu Lingaa.

Next time you visit Jabalpur in Madhaya Pradesh, take a walk in the banks of Narmada and see if you can get hold of a Bana-Lingaa. Mahatma Ghandhi's ashes were immersed in the River Narmada (at TilwaraGhat near Jabalpur), care to pay your respects to him.

Hope KSR maintains the level of dynamism rajini had in padayappa, of course ramya was fab in that. In Lingaa i guess first half rajini in pre independence fights and dies for a cause which would be fulfilled by Lingaa in second half.

no kindal....the "sheer genius" is as per my opinion only...there could be many who could take various opinions and might question about kamal's self-making movies and cinematic experiences...but Kamal takes the liberty to take risks on his own irrespective of the outcome...I don't want to delve into this much....

FYKI....Kamal had advised and asked to release the movie "Baba" very soon during that time irrespective of the ensuing issues by the political parties....but am not sure if Kamal had bought the distribution rights of Baba...and because there was a minor misunderstanding between Kamal and Rajini then when Rajini had to compensate all the parties for the Baba's performance at the box-office

And yes Rajini films are always a sure-shot at BO let us keep aside Baba...and I can't talk much about Koch as I haven't got the final numbers and haven't done the arithmetic and the economics of the movie...Koch might have not set the cash registers ringing at the BO but the economics can post a different picture... :)

North Arcot-Chengalpattu-Chennai region....there is very heavy competition to grab the distribution rights....though it is very difficult to get the 100% share of the region...getting at least 25% share is a big achievement...am not sure...but guess Kamal can get anywhere between 25% to 40%....all these are not confirmed information but these are information from my friend who is a relative of Kamal...and my friend knows only a bit of information which is passed on...no mincing words here....

No one is matching with anyone. As a fan, and having watched a few films, I think we had our days, which were glorious. All we need now is seeing Rajini on screen, thats enough. Whats the point in BO sucess, when all A,B & C were shattered even by a film tagged Flop.

Underlining thing is that - there is no point pointing out that the point is nowhere.

We have to give the current gen fans their space. Even though it does not match our ways, we don't have a say to it. Either just sit and watch or find a place inbetween and share the joy. Imagine we also start to pull their legs, they are sure to fall, but afterall they are our people - Citizen of Fans, the main backbone of our industry.

Unless war horns are blown, I give way for them to occupy whatever place they want to take. Any which ever way, nothing is permanent, or is it ? They will come to this stance one day, all we have to do is allow them to take this journey, ultimately they will reach where we are at now.

I am just amusing myself in Lingaa thread and glad that some of you are enjoying it too. Thats the main aim. Hope cm123 feels the same, as I had no intention to walk into this thread, until I saw his post.

I will keep looking, but for the moment all the stills released are post card formats only, which are really good on print. The Olive Green color gives a peculiar depth on the printed photo.

There are only 3, the initial ones, which are high resolution and can be blowned into a poster, for the moment. The one with his hands stretched is really awesome, the blue color is really pleasing and mild.

If you have visited the cinema halls in the 80's or 90's, you can see stills from the movie clipped inside a glass box, illumated by tube-lights. There will be one such box on each side of the door. It was fabulous to see them, before entering the screen. As kids, we used to make all sorts of predictions before these glass-window boxes and really wait for that particular scene while watching the film.

Lingaa, pushes itself to capture these moments. But I am not sure if theatres today to such rituals.

Yes. Vetrikkodi kattu is a racy number. Travels like an express train. But Indiane vaa has its own beauty. The orchestration is beautiful and the chorus is powerful. Thalaivar's singing is top notch. I would love to hear the Haricharan version too.

IMO, In general filling Satyam is not a big deal ( but 300 shows are phenomenon) as Satyam itself a brand....

This is the reason why a major lobbying is currently happening in the city of Hyderabad. The reason for that is the arrival of the movie Lingaa on December 12th and reports reveal the theatre owners are under tremendous pressure from different bigshots for tickets and that too in bulk numbers.

Sources say the lobbying has gone upto political levels with MPs and ministers calling up personally on behalf of few people. The demand is overwhelming for Lingaa and what remains to be seen is who will be the lucky ones to catch the first glimpse of superstar Rajnikanth on silver screen after four years. Breaking records is new neither to superstar Rajinikanth nor to his films. Rajini’s Lingaa, which releases in theatres across the globe tomorrow on his birthday, fetched a whopping Rs.7 crores in ticket sales on the very first day in Chennai alone when the official advance booking plans opened yesterday.

Booking of tickets commenced in cities across the city. At Sathyam Cinemas, which has allotted 89 shows per day for the film on Friday, Saturday & Sunday, tickets were saold out for all the three days within 30 minutes of the commencement of the booking via online. In an unprecedented manner, Sathyam Cinemas has allotted this many number of shows per day for a film.



Sathyam has already started selling tickets for the first four days of next week. At Devi complex, which runs 15 shows of Lingaa in its theatres, all the tickets have been sold out for the first three days, netting a cool Rs.45 lakhs in ticket sales. The situation is the same with Mayajaal on ECR Road which runs a whopping number of 100 shows per day for the film. By the evening, tickets for three days for all shows had been sold out.

Abirami complex has allotted 16 shows per day for Lingaa where tickets have been sold out completely for the first five days. Reports from Inox, Kamala, Albert, Santhi and Udhayam complex speak of similar trend in sale of tickets. So far, the advance booking in halls across the city for the first few days has netted Rs.7 crores, excluding the cost of ticket-sales of mid-night, early-morning and the 08:00 a.m. shows.
