What can we expect from Vijay 58? - Cinematographer Nataraj
It’ll be a very entertaining mass film. I’ll give you more exciting details once the formal announcements are made. But I can tell you that this film will raise a lot of eyebrows.

Personally I’m very excited to be a part of this film, the first reason being Ilayathalapathy Vijay. Then there’s Sridevi, Sudeep, Shruti Haasan, Hansika and along with all of them I’m going to have a blast.

Personally I’m very excited to be a part of this film, the first reason being Ilayathalapathy Vijay.

Sridevi to start work on two films

After making a cool comeback with English Vinglish two years ago, Sridevi is surging ahead in her second showbiz innings.

The actress has now signed not one but two films. Mirror has it that the actress will first start shooting in September for a Tamil film produced by Shebu and Selvaraj. Buzz is, Kamal Haasan's daughter Shruti Haasan and South star Vijay will also feature in it.

Set in Chennai it is a fantasy flick with Sridevi in a major role. Next in line is a women oriented subject in Hindi helmed by Ravi Udyawar (of RU Films), a renowned Southern ad filmmaker. This film which will be shot in Delhi, will go on floors in October and will be produced by her husband Boney Kapoor.

GRAND PALACE SET FOR VIJAY 58!
Vijay’s Kaththi is all set for a Diwali showdown post the censors, but the makers are maintaining things low-key to ensure a smooth release. Though Vijay had earlier stated that he will start his next film soon after Kaththi’s shoot, he has decided to take the next step after Kaththi’s release. The shoot for Vijay58 will kickstart sometime next month, after the star takes a little breather after Kaththi.
Sources say that a huge set is being erected in a village near Mahabalipuram. The set which is being constructed in the form of a grand palace, stretches for about 100 acres. Art director Muthuraj is said to be meticulously working with his team to bring out a royal look as many important scenes will be shot inside this palace.
Directed by Chimbudevan, Vijay 58 has Vijay, Shruti Hassan, Hansika, Kiccha Sudeepa and Sridevi in the main starcast. Music will be composed by Devi Sri Prasad while camerawork will be taken care of by Natty.

A majestic start to Vijay 58Oct 17, 2014
From a passionate cinematographer to a quintessential actor, Natarajan Subramaniam popularly known as Natty has been the face behind many popular Indian films like 'Jab we met', 'Ranjhanaa' etc. It is already reported that he is the cinematographer of the upcoming Chimbu Devan's untitled project with Ilayathalapathy Vijay.

Natty, in his social media page has posted that, this fantasy based flick will boast of grand sets with amazing aesthetics. He also said that he finds Art director Muthuraj's work mind boggling and is very excited to work with him.

Vijay 58 features a high-profile star cast like Shruthi Hassan, Hansika and Sridevi in important roles. The movie is said to be semi-periodic and title is yet to be finalized. If everything goes as per plan, the film will go on floors in the first week of November.

'Vijay 58' - Indian sensibilities and international standards
We earlier reported about the grand art direction being planned for'Vijay 58'. We have more about the elaborate set work that is happening for the film, since the past 3 months.
The castle set, in which the first schedule of the movie will be cranked, is being erected in ECR's Adityaram Studios, spread over 18 acres. Around 750 technicians, also from neighboring Kerala and Hyderabad, are working for the past 10 days on the sets. It is said that the castle will be something new to Tamil Cinema.
'Vijay 58'will be a big test for art director Muthuraj, and looks like he is doing a great job. Sources close to the team say that the film would be a commercial bonanza, made with Indian sensibilities and an international canvas. The title of the film hasn't been decided and many fan-made posters are being circulated all over the internet by excited Vijay fans.

The makers are likely to shoot a song featuring over 100 dancers on the first day.

The first schedule at Pannaiyur will go on for 45 days. The crew will then head to a different location. Also starring Shruti Haasan (http://www.bollywoodlife.com/news-gossip/shruti-haasan-spends-time-with-father-kamal-haasan/), Hansika Motwani and Kiccha Sudeep, the film is being directed by Chimbu Devan. I was only referring to the body language in the climax scene vinod, somehow antha pokkiri character suit panna alavukku, the cop character (when he puts on his uniform) suit aagatha maathiri irunthathu.......... it didn't evoke the kind of respect that the role deserved imho.......... Refer to Saami for the situation you had mentioned....... In the post-thuppakki film Jilla...... VJ suited both the dhadha role and the cop role perfectly....imho
One main problem I see in him for not suiting in officer roles is his chinna paiyan look !!!

Before Thuppakki happened, I would have claimed Vijay would have never able to play any responsible officer role, a cop or a military man and would have cited the examples of Villu Saravanan or a Pokkiri Police (climax) .......... or a Madurae Collector :) But Thuppakki more than quashed any such illusions...........so a director can make wonders provided he values story more than star value......

I got to agree with rsubras. I did not like the way he carried the cop role in Pokkiri. It just seemed odd. It was more of the mannerism than his young look. After Thuppakki, thanks to ARM's direction I feel he learned a lot. I bought his role as a cop. Again it comes to his mannerism and the way he carried the cop role.

Thuppakki...a cop role!! I thought he was an Army man on a holiday...again the plot of an Army man single-handedly without even the help or knowledge of police officers (oh okay one constable enacted by Sathyan was there) or anti-terror squad has gone ahead to complete the mission on his own....again poor plot by ARM...and the intelligence officials aren't even aware that an Army man is on a mission and even if they are aware...Army chief has only ignored the Army men....ARM has a long way to go...

There are couple of reasons
Number 1: There could be sleeper cells among police officers.
2, and the most important reason of all, because Jagadish is a badass!

Vijay fits an army officer role much better than a cop. He has that lean lanky athletic build that goes better as army person. A cop typically requires a little more bulk (muscular or otherwise). Constables within a police station are the ones who are thin typically.

@ Leo - Have to Totally disagree with you here. Gun was one of Vijay's best movies till date. I have a weird taste and one of My Favorite VJ movies is Vaseegara, Don't know how many would agree with me here. You cannot watch any Indian Movies if you care for Logic and plot. The only thing that irritates me in ARM/ VJ movies is that no matter how serious the issues are, there is a sidetrack of the hero romancing with so much indulgence without caring about the issue. (Some Transgender type actions can be avoided by VJ since it does not suit him at all)

That romance is needed to balance the movie imo. ARM movies are entertainers. Even if the matter is serious, it has to be entertaining to reach the audience otherwise it would just end up as preachy. That being said, he really needs to work on using the romance portion to move the story forward rather than putting the plot on halt while we follow the romance portion. The execution of blending romance with plot line in the likes of Ghajini, Dheena and 7th sense was missing in Thuppakki, and Kaththi.

I never talked about Thuppaki not being the worst movie or VJ's acting in the movie....my comment was only on the plot of the movie....if he is depicting the role of Army officer...how best he depicts it has to be left to the actor and the director....and the director will have to think of how to inter-twine the romantic portions without losing the plot....I would say thuppakki to me was fairy tale....

Take for example...Kamal's Kuruthipunal......Arjun and Kamal played Army Officers or Anti-Terrorist squad officers from the Army...very well done....the plot wasn't lost...while they tried to relax the movie by having some controversial (in the 1990's) portions then....

even Ajith too enacted the role of an Army officer in one of his earlier movies "Unnai Kodu Ennai Tharuven" and that didn't impress me much if I take the main plot of Army...but the plot was more related to the romantic with Army role as the sub-plot....It all depends on your convenience on how you take it...

Thanks for respecting my opinions and thoughts.....and I also respect your thoughts and opinions made especially the above one :)

Kuruthipunal in 1990 was way ahead....a very serious movie with a serious plot...
Unnai Kodu Ennai tharuven came later...the main plot was romance...so can't talk much about army role here...
Thuppakki came very much later...the plot was on sleeper cells and how an army man single-handedly goes on to find and demolish the sleeper cells without even the knowledge of intelligence, police officials...

If you clearly say thuppakki is not a Army movie...it is just a movie...then fine...no arguments...people here go rave about the actor doing the army role etc etc...

Guess you too are a kid and I am having fun talking to kids :)

basically whether it is army movie or not........ it is the role of a military man........ Vijay carried it with élan in Thuppakki, (the body language of a military man while on a holiday / while on a duty even if it is a self taken one)....... Suriya the same in Varanam aayiram............... Ajith has the capabilities no doubt, as suggested in a few glimpses of the cop role he played in Mankatha but unnai kodu ennai tharuvaen portrayal was not serious I suppose(haven't seen the movie fully..only certain scenes..so my comment was based on those scenes)........ and of course Villu military role for Vijay was equally laughable........... and hence the whole discussion about directors to be given credit for shaping up the actors....

Thanks to Bimmer and Subras for keeping the thread alive with interesting discussions.

Not just you both, I have heard many people pick Vaseegara as their favourite Vijay movie.

To me personally, Vaseegara is not one of my favourites, though :(

Two things which I think Vijay should have done right for Vaseegara is first, he shouldn't have trimmed his hair, second, he should have trimmed S.A. Rajkumar, out.

The music apart from 'aha enbargal' IMO sounded way too outdated and his background score was equally inept IMHO.

Apart from that, the sequences involving Vijay and Vadivelu, Vijay's Kushi-like encounters with Sneha, the 'Engliss Theriyadha' reactions, his 'collector dream', Pandiyarajan's LOL roller coaster....were all really enjoyable.

All in all, an yet another Vijay movie of those times (Youth, Pudhiya Geethai, Thamizhan, etc) which had the makings of a really good movie, but somehow falling short, one reason or the other.

boss..don't equate Vaseegara with Pudhiya Geethai, Sachein et.al.........there is a fundamental difference between Vaseegara and these other movies...... in Vaseegara he played a next door guy with likeable qualities (thuru thuru, naughty, lovable son and lovable friend)....he did not even bother about falling at the feet of a small girl, albeit for a comic scene but in those other movies he was portrayed as a adhi medhaavi and worse the supporting characters were dumb or a jackass...... Youth was ok...... but something was missing in it...some peppiness in the screenplay........apart from that the heroine also was not good..... they originally wanted Reema sen in that character but due to some issues this girl came up and Reema came for Bhagavathi...

Not taking that route at all :). It was more about his movies on the whole, rather than the characters he played.

Apart from the fact that all those movies released one after the other, no other comparisons intended :)

Agree with you on how Bhoopathi was the better character he played those days compared to Shiva (Youth), Sarathi (Pudhiya Geethai) or any other character.

But , when Vikram was blasting his way through those times with movies such as Dhill, Gemini and Dhool, we were expecting for some action from Vijay, purely from a fan's perspective. It was an expectation to move out of the 'love' route which began way back in Poove Unakkaga and then sealed through Kadhalukku Mariyadhai and take the 'action' route which seemed the order of those times. Even Maddy came up with Run.

It did eventually happen a little later through Thirumalai and then that industry-defining Ghilli. That's the reason why to me personally, (merits/demerits of the characters aside) all movies between Shajahah-Vaseegara all lacked a punch.

Sridevi in awe of her Vijay 58 team

Ilayathalapathy Vijay's 58th film has hit the floors during the last week. The untitled movie being directed by Chimbudevan has kick-started with a grand song shoot at ECR, Chennai. As way2movies reported earlier, veteran actress Sridevi and Hansika who play Mother and daughter in the movie, respectively are also part of the initial schedule of Vijay 58.

"Working with today's generation of actors & technicians who r totally professional & focused is inspiration 4 me. So much to learn from them", posted Sridevi in her official Twitter page.

Sridevi also recollected her past memories and said, "In Chennai shooting for a new Tamil film. Brings back so many memories of first day of shoot as a child actor." Further she added, "Thank you Chennai for all the love n warmth you have always given me. It feels great to be back."

Shruthi Haasan is expected to join Vijay 58 unit from today. Sudeep, Prabhu are also part of Vijay 58 cast. Devi Sri Prasad will render the music scores.

Vijay 58 to have daredevil stunts
It looks like Ilayathalapathy Vijay's next is going to be an action-packed one.The actor's next offering Vijay 58, we hear, will have six action-packed stunt sequences, that too choreographed by stunt masters from different places. This includes Sang Lin from China, Pradit Seeluem from Thailand and Sunil Rodrigues from Mumbai along with our own stuntman Dilip Subbarayan. The scenes are said to have some daredevil stunts that would be on the lines of Hollywood. http://www.timesofindia.com/entertainment/tamil/movies/news/Vijay-58-to-have-daredevil-stunts/articleshow/45249001.cms

Vijay 58 - To make a major Bollywood splash?

Ilayathalapathy Vijay's films generally open big not just in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and other overseas markets, but they are also dubbed sometimes in Telugu for a release in neighboring Andhra and Telangana. His latest Kaththi is yet to release in Telugu though, as the film is still touted for a possible Telugu remake with a happening Telugu star.

Vijay's upcoming 58th film by Chimbudevan, with a plethora of big co-stars such as Sridevi, Sudeep, Hansika and Shruti Haasan, is similarly expected to thrash box-office records in all the aforementioned markets. The film is being made as a Tamil - Telugu bilingual and we also hear that it is likely to be dubbed and released in Hindi. Many corporates are said to have expressed interest in the Hindi dubbing, release rights of 'Vijay 58' including Eros International.

Now that's big indeed.

Vijay58 will be the big summer release of 2015!
According to producers of Vijay 58, the film will be wrapped up by April 2015 and the makers are planning for a big summer release.
Sources added “The film will have a lot of VFX shots and the scenes are being shot with green mat technology which will be helpful for CG works”. The entire period portions in the film are being shot in a grand set at ECR will be visual extravaganza said the source.
We also hear that there won’t be any big break for the shooting and the team will be completed on time. Also as Chimbu Devan who is directing the film has pre-planned everything the shooting is progressing at a brisk pace.
Vijay 58 will have Ilayathalapathy in dual role, Sridevi playing a queen, Sudheep playing her commander and Hansika will be seen as a princess.Produced by PT Selvakumar and Thameens, the film also has Shruthi Hassan as another heroine. http://www.sify.com/movies/vijay58-will-be-the-big-summer-release-of-2015-news-tamil-omwjOnfdifhie.html

Vijay 58- Four titles in consideration!
The second schedule of Vijay 58 will be happening in Chennai and not in Mysore, as reported earlier. There were reports doing the rounds that the team got special permission to shoot in Mysore's Lalita Mahal where the famousMuthu’flashback portions were shot.
But now, sources close to the unit confirm that there is no such schedule and all these are speculations by various fan clubs of the Vijay who are very excited about the film. Buzz is that Vijay is not playing a dwarf character as a section of the media has written.
Sify.comunderstands that the next schedule will start in Chennai and then move over to Andhra in February. In March the unit plans to shoot some important scenes in Kerala's lush green locales and another small schedule in Punjab. Vijay58 wll be shot over 130 days and will be Ilayathalapathy's biggest film as far as budgets go.
Produced by PT Selvakumar and Shibu Thameens have registered four titles for the film-Puli, Mareesan, MarudheeranandGauruda. And one of them will be zeroed in by Pongal when Vijay himself will announce the title. The film has Shruti Haasan playing the female lead along with Hansika, Sridevi, Sudheep and others. http://www.sify.com/mobile/movies/vijay-58--four-titles-in-consideration-news-tamil-pbclV2fhdhfgc.html

VIDYU RAMAN INTERVIEW TO BEHINDWOODS

VIJAY 58 CAN CHANGE THE LANDSCAPE OF TAMIL FILMS

So let’s talk about the cherry on the top of your 2014-cake – Vijay58!

You recently tweeted that the film is just ‘massive’ & it’s your most taxing role to date!
I so badly wish I could reveal my character to you, Dil, but I have been given strict instructions not to reveal it to anyone! So in general, the film is a magical, fantasy film, and when I said massive I meant the lineup of actors and the technical input that is going into this movie. Actually all my portions are not on a set, they’re in front of a green mat! But the other sets that have been constructed are just larger than life, and I am in awe of it.

My costume itself is so heavy, so I sometimes feel so drained by the middle of the day, like I can’t do it anymore! But be it my costume, or the way I speak Thamizh in this movie, or the general physical appearance of my character – I definitely feel this is going to be a film that will change the way people look at me in the industry. Up until now I’ve always played these urban avatars, and this film is going to be so different. And to act in front of a green screen without any actors around, just having to imagine Vijay standing somewhere is not easy. I hope the audience accepts this film well because Vijay has never been in a fantasy film before, and I think this movie has the potential to change the landscape of Tamil films.

Vijay to continue his dream winning streak in Puli?
One of the most awaited movies, Puli features Ilayathalapathy Vijay, Shruti Haasan and Hansika in the lead roles. This semi-period film directed by Chimbudevan will have Devi Sri Prasad’s music.
Puli is said to have 6 numbers. DSP has already completed three songs for Puli, of which one has already been canned.
Now we have information that will please all Vijay fans. Our sources close to the team have hinted that Vijay will continue his dream winning streak as singer. Since Thuppakki, Vijay has sung one song in each of his movies. From Thuppakki’s Google Google to Kaththi’s Selfie Pulla, all the numbers have been smashing hits. To add to this Shruti Haasan, the multifaceted actress is also expected to sing in the film.
Stay tuned for more updates!

Exclusive: Vijay’s Puli release plans!
We had reported yesterday that Vijay is busy canning some important scenes with Thambi Ramaiah for his most anticipated movie Puli. Now the latest we hear is that team Puli is expected to leave for Kerala on the 21st of February and that particular schedule is expected to go on for 15 to 20 days.
Post that the team will be heading back to Thalakonam, where they canned some portions earlier. A trusted source close to the team has hinted that the CG work for the Thalakonam portion alone will require ample time(Close to 4-5 months overall) to complete and that the makers are planning to leave no stones unturned to give a perfect treat for all Vijay fans.
We also hear that the makers are eyeing to release the movie by the month of July while the songs can be expected to hit the stores by May.

I have a feeling this movie is gonna be a diwali release.

My guess is this would be a summer release mainly because of its genre...

Yes it was promoted as being a summer release when it was launched. But you never know how things change in this industry. A wide summer (hopefully solo) release would be very good from a business standpoint too.

The plot does sound interesting and novel...However, given that this belongs to a fantasy genre, I personally think this can go either way if the CGI work is not top notch. Won't work if the presentation is not up to mark, even if the script is great. But as some of you said...let's just hope Chimbudevan delivers. Only time will tell.

Chimbudevans movies are always different from regular movies. He has tried different genres in each of his movies. This movie has potential to elevate Vijays career into greater heights and I hope this movie will prove some ppl that Vijay is not a limited actor!

There is nothing wrong with being a limited actor. It is about knowing the limit and using it to full potential. Vijay has been heading the right direction lately and I hope to see more variety in scripts he chooses in the future.

I am not confident enough on chimbudevan and doubt whether he could pull it off tat too with the huge expectation from fans..from here on 100 cr is a cakewalk for vijay unless movie is so so bad but trade expects it to match kaththi's collection let's c ...good thing is now a days same set of distributors involved in distribution for his movies

Same feeling. I have little expectation from Chimbu but the concept sounds really interesting. Hope he proves us wrong and give a solid entertainer.
