A brief study on the Sethupathi kings of Ramanathapuram - Tamil Nadu from A.D.1604

"Maravar" were a Tamil Warrior community of Tamil Nadu known for their bravery and valour in warfare, since the period of third Tamil Sangam. They were more concentrated around the Ramanathapuram region which was ruled for long by "Marava Chieftains" and who served mostly under the Paandiya kings, and when Cholas overpowered the Paandiyar for some period they also served under them. However with the fall of the Vijayanagara empire, the ruling Viceroy of Vijayanagara in Mathurai (the Nayakkar) declared his independent rule over Mathurai, and some years later the Chieftain of the Maravar community of Ramanathapuram too declared "his independence from Vijayanagara supremacy under the Nayaka viceroys". They called themselves as "Sethupathi kings" and ruled over the "Sethu country" of the 'Maravar' - with their capital city at Ramanathapuram. 'Sethu-athipathi' means the lord of the 'Sethu country' of the Tamil Maravar community - the present Ramanathapuram district.
