Watched it. Soori comedy didnt work for me. Veera vinakaya should be placed well before and this song's sound mixing is not good.. I dont know the whether it is a problem in the audi I watched. Masala cliche's all over.

Dear Hubbers,

Waiting for your reviews. I was expecting a show in the Netherlands today. But poor Ayngaran. They haven't updated showtimes on their website and also no indication of Vedalam getting released here. No response from them on Twitter too. This's the first time I'm not watching an Ajith movie here on the first day. Not sure why they haven't released yet. Probably because it's Tuesday (difficult to pull the crowd on a working day). Thursdays are fine since it's almost weekend.

One thing that was proved with Vedalam is Vijay can never match the Opening of Ajith in TN...Emperor of Opening in style, a lot of theaters in My area had a 120% occupancy, evan um okkanthu padam pakkala

While Lakshmi Menon has bagged an important role for which she has done complete justice to, Thambi Ramaiah impresses as a blind father. Comedy sequences work seldom in Vedalam and is one of the major drawbacks of this film. While Soori fails to evoke laughter, Shruti Haasan (who has been used as yet another comedian) deserves a praise for taking up this role and that's about it.

Technicalities:

Though the first half takes its time to take off, the way it ends is one of the highlights of Vedalam. Second half though is largely saved by Ajith which otherwise has nothing new to offer; a few melodramatic scenes and tons of brother-sister sentiment to name a few. Vetri's cinematography adds value to the film. His angles are refreshing and images nice and sleek. Though Ruben's editing is above average, he could've reduced the overall length of this film that would've made it racier. Anirudh's background score is over the top and gets irritating at places. What works are his songs and the 'Theri' theme which fits aptly for a star like Ajith. All stunt sequences are choreographed well by Stunt Silva and is a treat to watch.

Overall View: Though this movie suffers from logical loopholes and melodramatic sequences, it gets saved by Ajith and director Siva's propaganda that puts human values before money, which makes Vedalam watchable.

Making a commercial film isn't a piece of cake. There are very few directors who have mastered this art of catering to a wide audience base with packaged entertainment having elements like comedy, action, sentiment, some twists and the song-dance routines. And when there is a big hero on board, the director's responsibility grows even bigger. That's exactly the case in Vedalam where the successful Veeram duo of Siva - Ajith joins hands again.

In Vedalam, the focus is clearly on projecting women in good light with Ajith always looking out for his doting sister (played by Lakshmi Menon). When there is a mass hero, action comes along like his shadow and Vedalam has its fair share of 'thiruvizha' action moments resulting from the revenge theme of the film. There are three hunky villains falling into the commercial cinema template completely.

The transformations in look, body language and attitude that Ajith brings about are bolstered by Anirudh's ‘theri theme’. Anirudh is indeed a 'masster' and his work in Vedalam needs a mention. Right from the groovy title credits score to the ‘Veera Vinayaga’ number to the riotous ‘Aaluma Doluma’, Anirudh is in the right zone and delights the masses. The chemistry between Ajith’s famed screen presence and Anirudh’s BGM score was always a big lookout pre-release and the combination works in Vedalam.

Some of the comedy scenes (headed by the likes of Soori, Kovai Sarala, Rajendran, Balasaravanan, Swaminathan, Sivabalan) don’t work out as intended and the sentiment scenes go overboard into the melodramatic territory. The film doesn't engage consistently as intended.

But the earnestness of Ajith in the feel-good, tearjerker moments stands out no doubt. Siva has not just banked on Ajith’s persona, but has also extracted various performance shades from Thala. With two distinct looks, some energetic dance moves, plenty of mass moments in the fight scenes, Vedalam is every hardcore Ajith fan’s ideal outing.

And the director has also made sure to not miss out on the large family audience base by using the services of actors like Lakshmi Menon and Thambi Ramaiah. Both these actors are pillars no doubt, and up the EQ (emotional quotient) of Vedalam.

And like in Veeram, the pre-interval segment is a spike in Vedalam too, and Siva is in charge of the film playing to his strengths with impactful dialogues and 'moments' to savor.

Shruti Haasan (playing a hyper lawyer) has the interestingly filmed ‘Don’t You Mess With Me’ song where she has been showcased like the dream girl that she is, by DoP Vetri. The locations and glossy feel of this song are in contrast to the general gritty tone of the film. The way this song traverses is interesting, with a 'hate to love' journey portrayed through it. Ashwin gets a small role as Shruti’s brother who falls for Lakshmi’s goodness.

Editor Ruben’s work is noteworthy in the frenetic climax action scene which has some intelligent episodes and also plenty of outer-atmospheric elements in it. Stunt master Silva must have had a lot on his plate given the big action scope of the film and with his trusted aide Ajith, Silva has delivered some high-octane set pieces.

What's hot:
This movie is an out and out commercial entertainer. Director Siruthai Siva has ensured that there is plenty for Ajith fans and the family audience. Ajith has punch dialogues, high octane action sequences and all the right dance moves. He plays the good and the bad with ease and is a treat to watch on screen. The sister sentiment (the story revolves around Tamizh) and the fact that men need to respect women is a major highlight in the film. The storyline may not be new for Tamil cinema, but the director has tailor-made it for Ajith and the mass audience. Anirudh's BGM is apt for the film, but it's the 'Aaluma Dolumaa' song that has the crowd whistling and clapping away. Lakshmi Menon has a strong role in the film. She is a natural actor and has essayed her role as Tamizh really well.

What's not:
It's clear that the movie is meant for the mass audience so the director has loaded it with all the possible elements. The first half of Vedalam is better put together than the second half. The film has many other characters as well, like Soori, Kovai Sarala, Vidyu Raman and Mottai Rajendran, who have been added for the comic element. But many of the jokes fall flat. As the leading lady, Shruti Haasan doesn't have much of a role except for a song and some scenes. Unfortunately, her role as a lawyer seems to be etched more on the lines of a bimbette. It also looks like she dubbed for herself in some parts and someone else has done other parts. It would be better if someone else dubs for her. The BGM in the movie for most parts is really loud for some reason and gets annoying.

What to do:
If you love watching Ajith on screen and enjoy commercial potboilers, then this film is for you.

A Theri Mass Deepavali Treat!


Ajith and director Siva has teamed up after the super hit success of 'Veeram' and the combination was enough to push the expectations levels to the sky. The pre-release buzz was highly positive. Has the film offered what it promised?

Ganesh (Ajith) reaches Kolkata for the higher studies of his younger sister Tamizh (Lakshmi Menon) He starts working as a taxi driver and helps police nab an important member of an international syndicate of criminals run by three brothers (Rahul Dev, Kabi Singh and another one new actor). Ganesh incurs the wrath of the criminal network. Only when he was dragged in to be killed we come to know that the purpose of Ganesh's visit is dismantling the mafia by killing its three heads, To know what is the reason behind this mission and how Ganesh accomplishes it, watch 'Vedalam' in theaters.

The film highly depends on Ajith's star power, mass appeal and his skills to perform and entertain his fans and general audience. Writer director Siva emerges a winner in capitalizing the phenomenal positives of Ajith as an actor and as a star and manages to serve us a product of high octane entertainment despite a few glitches.

As said before, 'Vedalam' is a mass film and don't expect a great story. There are predictable twists, convenient turns of events, logical lapses and all that are common in a mass film which would require us to keep our logical thinking aside and enjoy the show. Even the names of villains and what they really do are not well explained. The script does not even care to establish the hero's character as a supremely powerful human being with a proper background to make his victory over an international mafia of criminals appear somewhat convincing. But given the large than life image of Ajith and the way the star has pulled of this character would make you forget these things while watching the film.

Despite with an ordinary story and limited scope for suspense and thrill, Siva has managed to maintain some suspense element by hiding some details about the lead characters throughout the film and they make the film much more interesting than a mere super hero film. . He has created a suspense filled character that will suit the image of Ajith and also written some fantastic dialogues that will make his fans erupt in Joy. Lakshmi Menon does not know the real background of Ajith and this gives room for a lot of dual play in Ajith's character. The way Siva has played some games within the script with this has resulted in lifting the fortunes of the film as a wholesome entertainment package.

The first half is predominantly allotted to comedy but they hardly evoke laughter. Only after 45 minutes running time, the first fight sequence occurs in the film. But the timing it comes. The way it unfolds and the way it has been conceived and executed makes us forget everything and enjoy. The interval fight block and the revelation about Ajith's character that follows is another sequence to watch out for.

The second half is predominantly entertaining without considerable lags. The character of Ajith as a north Chennai rowdy who would do anything for money is well etched out and offers enormous scope for entertainment. The pre-climax portion with a slight twist and the climax fights add up to wholesome satisfactory feel of the film in terms of entertainment.

Brother-sister sentiment scenes backed by some meaningful dialogues penned by Siva have worked out well and that will sure be a delight to family audience. The adage that Ajith carries the film on his shoulders suits to this film than any other film the actor has acted so far. His performance level as an entertainer goes a few notches higher in this film. With his usual finesse in action sequences and sarcasm intact, Ajith dances and also hums some old songs in this film. He also utters the north Chennai slang impeccably. For his fans who would go berserk for his mere look and walk these are surplus entertainment moments. The performer in him comes to fore in emotional scenes. Overall this is going to be a memorable performances of Ajith in his career as a mass hero.

Shruthi Haasan comes across as another crazy girl kind of heroine who first misunderstands the hero and tries to avenge him only to get smitten by his extreme kindness later. Soori's antics and dialogue delivery raise a few guffaws her and there but overall it gives a feel that the comedian could have done much better to lift the entertainment value in first half. Lakshmi Menon is convincing in her role as a kind-hearted innocent girl while Thambi Ramiah beautifully capitalizes the opportunity perform in his last scene with Ajith.

Music is one of the big plusses of the film Songs, two each in both the halves, thankfully do not hamper the pace of the narration. While 'Veera Vinayaka' and 'Aaluma Doluma' are mass number that succeed in setting the dancing mood, the other two songs pass muster. Rerecording in the action scenes, especially the Theri theme is fantastic.

Stun Silva 's actions sequences is the most efficient entertainment booster of the film. The entire team of Silva, Anirudh, cinematographer Vetri, Editor Ruben, director Siva and Ajith who has pulled this off on the screen should be commended for such a brilliant effort in all the fight scenes of the film.

Verdict - 'Vedalam' is an enjoyable mass entertainer. Put on your seat belts and enjoy the ride.

Much particularly, when a film has to be qualified with all such aspects with an A-league hero, things are more complex indeed and Vedalam is one such illustration that caters completely to everyone’s tastes blending the mass appeal and classic performance of Ajith Kumar.The story opens with Ganesh (Ajith Kumar) along with his younger sister (Lakshmi Menon) arriving at Kolkata, where he gets settled with a job of cab driver. On an occasion, the police department of Kolkata requests cab drivers to help them in trapping the most dreaded criminals they are looking out for. Three scenes are more than enough to pull audiences to theatres and of course, you have it all from the 45-sec teaser that includes ‘Therikka Vidalama’, ‘Kannamoochi Re Re’ and the shot showing him walk in dark shadows. Shruthi Haasan appears with a commercial shade and her performance during the unexpected twist in intermission is appreciable. Lakshmi Menon plays a neat role with underplayed performance, which enhances the emotional feel. Soori, Lollu Sabha Swaminathan, Bala Saravanan, Naan Kadavul Rajendran, Kovai Sarala, Vidyulekka et al have their humorous spell done in parts. Rahul Dev gets a meaty role as baddie after a very long time and so is debutant Kabir who scores the best. Background score by Anirudh is one of the most astounding features we find in the film. Couple of songs – Aaluma Doluma and Veera Vinayaka are very well choreographed. Stun Silva has choreographed remarkable stunts for Ajith Kumar that comes along with the track by Anirudh. It’s an out and out commercial entertainer and there isn’t anything to do with logic, rational thinking or finding out what impresses who. Yes, yesterday's show was a blast. Today's seems to be a blast too. I had gone to watch Spectre, and heard that extra shows were added for Vedalam and were selling like hot cakes and within minutes all 3 screens were full. Tomorrow (Wednesday) is a holiday here, it should be bigger tomorrow and should head for a massive weekend. Glad that finally an Ajith film gets the needed merit, esp. for the fans.

I liked the movie, a typical kind thats always apealing. During the the Yatch scene, I thought the roof is going to collapse, can't imagine how it would have been in Chennai/Tamil Nadu. As usual, the first week is always for fans, so I leave you guys in peace and (if needed) will come back next week to share about the film.

Yes, yesterday's show was a blast. Today's seems to be a blast too. I had gone to watch Spectre, and heard that extra shows were added for Vedalam and were selling like hot cakes and within minutes all 3 screens were full. Tomorrow (Wednesday) is a holiday here, it should be bigger tomorrow and should head for a massive weekend. Glad that finally an Ajith film gets the needed merit, esp. for the fans.

I liked the movie, a typical kind thats always apealing. During the the Yatch scene, I thought the roof is going to collapse, can't imagine how it would have been in Chennai/Tamil Nadu. As usual, the first week is always for fans, so I leave you guys in peace and (if needed) will come back next week to share about the film.

i'd say 3 big pluses were ajith, aniruth and siva,

luxmi menon was good too.

ajith's acting when he changed as a crazy guy was so good, i loved all the fights. songs were great, the scene where ajith breaks the glass window was awesome. theriiii.

brother -sister sentiment :thumbsup: ajith and luxmi menon made me cry.

but it was not a perfect movie. comedy was just ok. there were so many unanswered questions. but who cares?

On a side note:

Thala Ajith’s Vedhalam has taken a record opening in Tamil Nadu. According to initial reports, Vedhalam has grossed approximately 15.4cr in Tamil Nadu and set a new benchmark for day-one opening collection in the state.

Earlier, Vijay’s Kaththi and Rajini’s Lingaa had the highest opening in Tamil Nadu but now, Ajith’s Vedhalam has broken all the previous record. The film has released in more than 500 screens in Tamil Nadu and opened with houseful shows.

Rakesh of Vetri theaters says “Vedhalam is doing extremely well in both of our screens. We have scheduled maximum shows for the film till this weekend. Though there are mixed reviews, family audiences are loving hit. We smell a big hit”.

Considering the budget involved and the kind of opening, the film has got, Vedhalam is sure to be a massive hit.

After the success of Veeram last year, director Siva and actor Ajith have teamed up together for yet another action packed potboiler, titled Vedalam.

Lakshmi Menon and Shruti Haasan play the female lead supported by Rahul Dev, Kabir Duhan Singh, Thambi Ramaiah, Soori and Ashwin.

Set against the backdrop of a loving brother-sister relationship, the film revolves around one man’s mission to take down an international flesh trade racket.

Ajith is portrayed as a beefed up, invincible superhuman, who annihilates the enemy with his brute strength. Every frame seems to worship the actor, highlighting his smile and charm, much to the delight of his fans.

Ajith plays Ganesh, a lowly cab driver, who adores his younger sister Tamizh (Lakshmi Menon). The two have recently moved to Kolkata to pursue Tamizh’s love for drawing.

Ganesh enrolls her in college and gets a job driving a taxi.

Comedy actor Soori plays his boss and there are plenty of fun moments to keep you entertained. He is totally in his elements evoking much laughter along with Shruti Haasan, who plays a young lawyer desperate to win her first case.

The director has completely ignored the romantic angle, focusing instead on the brother-sister bond.

Lakshmi Menon is perfectly cast as the loving sister. An effortless performer, she does full justice to her meaty role. Their easy relationship is definitely a big plus for the film.

Ajith's character in the film is reminiscent of Rajinikanth in the cult classic Baasha.

Like Rajinikanth, Ajith abhors violence, but when provoked turns into a mean fighting machine that can destroy everything in its path.

The second half narrates a clichéd tear-jerking flashback that shows the National award-winning Thambi Ramaiah in a significant role. As Tamizh's blind father, he once again delivers a solid performance.

The weak links in the film are its many antagonists -- Kabir Duhan Singh, Aniket Chouhan and Rahul Dev.

Despite all the build-up, the trio seems to have absolutely no clue how to deal with Ajith.

A worthy opponent would probably have made the film more interesting.

There are many different facets to Ajith's character in the film. The transition from loving brother to dangerous killer is smooth and effortless. He appears in two completely different avatars in the first and second half, with distinctive body languages. He also showcases his funny side. The spontaneity with which he breaks into a jig in the middle of an intense fight scene is totally hilarious.

I think Ajith is one of the few right now who has a very unique and stylish act. I feel like he will shine more with gritty and realistic action thrillers. Even if I didn't like YA very much I did enjoy watching Ajith on that movie.

When I see Ajith I get the same feeling as watching Kamal. Don't get me wrong, they are both completely different in terms if style and acting but when it comes to action movies I think he will benefit more from movies Kamal does.

Post Mankatha I liked all his Movies.. Veeram, Mankatha, YA, B2, Vedalam, Aarambam were my favorites in the same order typed...For some reason Billa 2 is a movie that I would prefer watching over and over...I loved Ajith with the Black hair in the movie (May be that is the reason!!) - Aegan is on my worst Ajith Movie List..Barring the Songs...Tirupathi was the worst, I remember flying all the way from Ohio to San Jose to watch the Movie...

Honestly I have never been concerned about Ajith's flops. It is a known fact that he sometimes has poor script sense. I think he trusts the director more than selecting the right script from available choices (this mainly includes his bizzare choices like Aegan, Asal, Billa2, Jana, thirupathi...... the common thread between all these flops is that Ajith just chose the director blindly believing in their previous outing). But I always thought failures are part and parcel of life. this is what makes success very sweet.

My choice of favorite heroes in any field are fairly strange. I like people who struggle and deliver. I like people who fight against all odds and come on top. Ajith is no exception. Djokovic is no different. they may be second choice or third choice for many people, but not for me. They are champions on their own right. When they deliver, they deliver very big!

The grand opening of actor Ajith's film Vedalam is being seen as a new high at the Tamil box office. Industry sources reveal Ajith's Diwali release has collected close to a whopping Rs 15.5 crores on day one and around Rs 12 crores on the second day.

Experts say it's the biggest ever opening, beating even superstar Rajinikanth's Lingaa that clocked Rs 13 crores last year. Many now look at Thala, as he's fondly called, as the next superstar in the making. Her brother Sanjay, a hardcore Ajith fan, woke up at 2 am on Diwali day to watch the first day first show and says, "Ajith could well be the next Rajinikanth."

While many see Ajith's box office record as the beginning of a new era in Tamil cinema, all eyes will now be on Rajinikanth's next film Kabali which may or may not prove he's still the boss of the box office.

I remember when Shivaji / Endhiran were released all the FDFS were fully booked in London , my cousin being a RK " Fanatic" travelled all the way from London to Milton Keynes ( only an hour) long to watch it, now he is married with kids , he says he has forgotten who RK is... Vedhalam - Oru "thala" raagam

Is stardom enough to make a mediocore movie hit? Even in 2015 it seem possible, because Vedhalam, didnt show me anything I havent seen in movies like Thirupachi (brother fighting baddies without sisters knowledge) Velayutham (several girls trapped by human flesh traders), Poojai (Shruthi haasan continues where she left in Poojai being the loosu heroine) how she became a lawyer is even more mysterious than Da vinci code. Lakshmi Menon did a realistic role as the sister, they always talk like waterfalls on mobile phones. Despite having many comedians, Ajith pulled off the comedy part more well esp in 2nd half. As usual Villains end up being punchbags after listening to punch dialogues.

The worst part of the movie has to be Anirudhs BGM: each time he repeated theri theri, It sounded like kaatha pudungi eri. AS always in Sivas movies the songs are spoiled with talking part in between. Anirudh also failed in songs, he wasnt adult enough for this, I expected better tunes from Anirudh, esp since he said he was an Ajith fan.

Conclusion: Director Siva dissapoints, whereas Ajith shines as usual, you can watch it for his charisma, body language, dialogue delivery and action.

That is one thing I donot understand. Ajith- GVM < Ajith- Siva. I don't know how to equate this, I liked YA Much Much better than Vedalam but Public think Other wise. I was Hoping Vedalam will be an Above Average movie for Ajith but this is turning out to be his biggest BB. Confused :)

Vedalam”… A decent-enough star-dispensing machine


Spoilers ahead…

Among the mass heroes, Ajith may be the most interesting. It’s the grey shades – not just in the hair, but also in the characterisations he gets away with. There’s something about watching a hero who isn’t virtue incarnate, whose image allows him to do things other heroes can’t, and Vedalam makes pretty good use of this aspect of the actor. The film, directed by Siva, isn’t so much a movie as a vending machine for dispensing star-isms. Consider the star’s first shot. (He plays a cabbie named Ganesh.) A glimpse of wavy grey hair. A glimpse of the eyes. A glimpse of a smile. All this in a scene that involves a… kathi. (Remind you of anyone else’s movie?) Or consider the scene where someone asks him, “Unakku car otta theriyuma?” These aren’t dialogues between the characters. They’re conversations between the film and fans, who go berserk. (They know the line is for them.) This blatant demolition of the fourth wall is why these “mass” films can’t be analysed like other films, on grounds of logic. Or even sense.

The last time Ajith was in a Siva film (Veeram), he played a character with four brothers. This time, he’s got a reason for a flashback sister, Thamizh (Lakshmi Menon), who thinks he’s as innocent as he looks, with that streak of ash on his forehead, with that tendency to also pray in church, with that impulse to help the blind across the street. But guess what? To the surprise of nobody who’s seen the trailer, there’s a side to Ganesh that makes him smile and snarl and deliver aphrodisiacal punch lines. (I am as important as your parents. They were instrumental in your birth. I’m going to be instrumental in your death.) Forget dirty magazines – these clips are all Ajith fans will need if they decide to become sperm donors. The actor plays the two sides as if outfitted with an on/off switch. Good guy/bad guy. Meek guy/Superman. And he doesn’t even have to duck into a phone booth. Is it great acting? No. But it’s something.

That something keeps us watching, and the anticipation of that something tides us over the lulls. A catalogue of the latter would begin with the supremely un-comedic comedy track by Soori & Co. He pretends to be faithful to his wife, then he slips into a nightclub, then his wife lands up there with her mother… This sort of thing could function as a litmus test for a couple considering marriage. If he or she laughs… The film’s biggest laugh, for me, came from a doctor who says things like, “His survival rate is just seven per cent,” as though the patient were a battery. There’s a heroine around somewhere (Shruti Haasan), who gets an awful song that goes, Don’t mess with me. Not that Ganesh plans to. I haven’t seen a hero look less interested in the heroine. Shruti Haasan gets more footage in the Fanta ad during intermission. Then there are the villains, an ill-defined lot. Their scenes are edited with chopper blades, on which the camera is mounted. Maybe there’s a way to look at this. Maybe the hyper-cutting is a manifestation of the evil that churns in these men… Nah! It’s just lousy filmmaking.

And yet, the film makes good on its mission. Fans are left delirious. Others are left… fitfully entertained. Some scenes – the scene where the villains zone in on the hero’s whereabouts, or the one where the hero discovers his kidnapped sister’s whereabouts – are charged with the enjoyably trashy energy AR Murugadoss brings to his films. The pre-interval block is particularly impressive – at least, for this sort of film. It’s a sustained stretch of action, plus a revelation that sets up the second half. Now we get to the “family sentiment” zone, and I must say these parts aren’t as bad as they sound. I walked out of the film wishing these filmmakers would apply themselves a little more. All mental resources seem directed towards the hero-oriented scenes, and they work. Why not redirect some of those street smarts to the comedy track, the romance, the scenes with the villains? It’s like taking up swimming just to keep afloat.

Actually I heard a few people say they disappointed with Siva and all that... To me it wasn't that disappointing on siva's side... Yes over the top and unwanted screenplay at times..to me the I felt anirudh was a big let down(thalavali vandhiruchu)! Nothing else was that bad or anything! Ajith andha innocent character pannathu was really refreshing!adhaye fulla vachi oru simple sweet film pannalam! Nalla refreshing ah irukkum!

I liked the flashback more. He pulled off that character very well in my opinion.

More than anything what spooled the transformation scene was that you knew it was coming. More unpredictability and a little less going overboard during transformation would have made it awesome.
