A brief study on Tamil Thondaiman kings of the Thondaimandalam region of Tamil Nadu

The Thondaimaan dynasty originated from the king "Ilanthiraiyan" the son of the Tamil Chola king Nedumudikkilli by Naga Princess Peelivalai of the first century A.D. The Chola king carved the northern region of then Chola country which was newly named as the Thondaimandalam and placed his son as its Ruler with the title the "Thondaiimaan Ilanthiraiyan". The Thondaimaan kings continued thereafter to this region for quite some period, but not much in the limelight. However during the post Third Sangam periods and they remained Chieftains in their region either independently or as Subordinates to Pallavas of latter period.

A much later Pallava king of Bellary region of Andhra named "Vira Koorchchan" waged war with the Tamil Thiraiyar king of Thondai Mandalam captured part of his kingdom with all regalia, and also married the Naga Princess the daughter of Thiraiyan. They were blessed with the son "Skanda Shishayan" (Pallava king). He possibly with his mother having the Tamil blood was the first Pallava king who issued copper-plate grants both in Sanskrit and Tamil.

Skanda Shishayan was followed by his son Kumara Vishnu {Vijaya Simhavarman} - 2 (A.D.506-516) who captured the southern region of Thondai Mandalam from the "Tamil Thiraiyar king" with his capital city the Kanchipuram. From this period Kanchipuram became the 'permanent capital city of Pallavas' for many years. He was follwed by his son Buddhavarman (A.D.516-520) who became a continuos threat from north to the then Cholas. He was followed by Vishnugopa - 2 {Kumara Vishnu} (A.D.520-530) and the Nanthivarman - 1 (A.D.530-537) who stamped the revolts of the Tamil Thiraiyar king under captive.

Therafter the Thondaiman or Thiraiyar kings continued to be mainly as Chieftains of the Thondaimandalam region.
