on a seriois note do little weight training you would c the differences.. you don't need weights to do it..

Try 100 pushups a day, it would strengthen your pecs (chest muscles) . triceps (biggest muscle in your arm, behind your biceps) and shoulders (deltoids)

at least try 30 pushups a day

Healthy Lifestyle Tip:

Breathe In, Breathe Out

There are many ways to relax. Some of us read a good book, do the gardening, have a hobby or workout at the gym. Practicing breathing can help ease tension, clear the mind, promote physical and mental health and reduce stress and anxiety. When you're anxious you reduce the amount of breaths you take, says James S. Gordon, M.D., director of the Centre for Mind-Body Medicine in Washington, D.C.. Most people take 15 breaths per minute, but when you are stressed, you should aim for six or seven slow, deep ones.

"Emotional stress can cause weight gain," says Dean Ornish, M.D. President of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute in Sausalito, California. "It speeds up the conversion of calories to fat because you're more likely to overeat or make unhealthy choices when stressed." Manage the stress, and you manage the weight.

"People can't believe it works as a healing and preventive tool," says Herbert Benson, M.D. Director Emeritus of Boston's Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine. Deep breathing opens things up and drives oxygen throughout the body and brain. As a result, we gain more awareness, energy and an overall sense of well being.

IF YOU ARE DRIVING AT NIGHT AND EGGS ARE THROWN AT YOUR WINDSHIELD.
DO NOT OPERATE THE WIPER AND SPRAY ANY WATER BECAUSE EGGS MIXED WITH
WATER BECOME MILKY AND BLOCK YOUR VISION UP TO 92.5% SO YOU ARE FORCED
TO STOP BESIDE THE ROAD AND BECOME A VICTIM OF GANG ROBBERS.

I had the amount of FAT in my body checked , according to my height. This machine reads your

1) Fat mass
2) Bone bass
3) Muscle mass

according to your height and weight by sending electronic pulses into your body, all you had to do is hold the hand grips of the machine and it would do the rest.

My details

Height = 5 foot 10 inches
weight =80kg

Fat mass =10 kg :P
Bone mass = 8.5 kg
muscle mass =61.5 kg :notworthy: :2thumbsup: :cheer: :happydance:

The machine says anything in the range of 8 to 15 kg of Fat mass is 'Excellent' , anything between 15 kg to 22 kg is good, anything above that is bad, porr, then obese

So the reason for my post , some time your BMI could be wrong, if you have heavier bones and more muscle. It is the fat content you should keep an eye on,this can 'only'be done with this machine or through blood test! not from a scale!

Hi Dev :)

what is your ideal weight? do a blood test and find the amount of fat content? rather than simply try to loose weight? if you do not do some light non cardio excercise once you have lost weight , you would have loose skin hanging around where you have lost weight , this I have been telling every one , no body seems to understand.. :sigh2:

One of my friend, who sits next to me in the office ,is a marathon runner, she can run 26.5 miles, and run for 3.45 hrs, which I can never ever do, unless i get proper training, she is slim, but she has loose skin around her face, which makes it look like she has double chin !!!

This was simply cause by not doing wieght training....

hope it is clear :P

dev

PS, thanks a lot for the info...:) right now I dont do any non cardio... & I don't intent to do any until I get my spinal problem cured completely... I'm just too scared of damaging it further...but yes, I'll def do a blood test & chk on the fat...

Please Be Extremely Careful especially if using internet mail such as Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL and so on.

This information arrived this morning direct from both Microsoft and Norton.

Please send it to everybody you know who has access to the Internet.

You may receive an apparently harmless email with a Power Point presentation

'Life is beautiful.'

If you receive it DO NOT OPEN THE FILE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES , and delete it immediately.

If you open this file, a message will appear on your screen saying: 'It is too late now, your life is no longer beautiful.'

Subsequently you will LOSE EVERYTHING IN YOUR PC and the person who sent it to you will gain access to your name, e-mail and password.

This is a new virus which started to circulate on Tuesday afternoon.

AOL has already confirmed the severity, and the antivirus software's are not capable of destroying it.

The virus has been created by a hacker who calls himself 'life owner'

Liver: one of the ‘most’ vital organs of the body, it has an amazing fighting ability against toxins and poisonous substances such as alcohol, drugs, anti bodies ..etc
Everything that goes through your mouth is processed and filtered out through liver.
Liver has an amazing capability to recover even after years of abuse, esp. alcohol , drugs. But once you develop cirrhosis , your days are numbered, there is no reverse back
It is essential to look after your liver like you exercise to look after your heart

The functions of the liver

1) to produce substances that break down fats
2) convert glucose to glycogen
3) produce urea (the main substance of urine)
4) make certain amino acids (the building blocks of proteins)
5) filter harmful substances from the blood (such as alcohol)
6) storing vitamins and minerals
7) controlling the glucose level of the blood
8) and produce most of the cholesterol

Pro longed abuse of liver through obesity, drug addiction, poor diet, alcoholism, blood transfusion will extremely damage your liver and cause liver diseases such as :

1) Jaundice
2) Hepatitis
3) Fatty liver
4) Cirrhosis
5) Liver cancer

The symptoms of liver diseases

1) Jaundice
2) Loss of appetite
3) Weight gain
4) Bloating
5) Light colour stool / dark colour Urine
6) Irregular bowl movements
7) Un stoppable bleeding
8) Depression
9) Being moody

Food for liver

1) Green vegs
2) Whey protein
3) Milk thistle
4) Warm water with one squeezed lemon

More to follow later …

Very useful topic,PS... jaundice, if not cured completely can lead to sluggish liver years later... So take care to complete the full course of medicine if u have jaundice... U might feel as if u r completely recovered after maybe 3/4th of the course...but don't stop the medicines until the docs says to... And anyone who has had jaundice once, should take extra care of their liver through lifestyle changes...

[tscii:96552169e4]PS, u can read more abt sluggish liver here... http://www.renewlife.ca/conditions.php?id=23

What is Sluggish Liver (Poor Liver Function)?

‘Sluggish Liver’ is a non-technical medical term that is used to describe a liver that is not functioning optimally. Generally, this term is used when the liver is free of disease, but performing at a reduced rate.

Optimal liver function is vital in order to deal with the abundance of toxins that are filtered through the liver. If the liver is not in good health, these toxins can cause the liver to become ‘sluggish’, resulting in congestion or poor functioning[/tscii:96552169e4]

HAY FEVER? EAT YOGURT!
Eat lots of yogurt before pollen season.
Also-eat honey from your area (local region) daily.

ASTHMA? EAT ONIONS!!!!
Eating onions helps ease constriction of bronchial tubes. (onion packs place on chest helped the respiratory ailments and actually made breathing better).

(Actually, any berry is good for you..they're high in anti-oxidants and they actually keep us young...........blueberries are the best and very versatile in the health field........they get rid of all the free-radicals that invade our bodies)

Orange : Sweetest medicine. Taking 2 - 4 oranges a day may help keep colds away, lower cholesterol, prevent & dissolve kidney stones as well as lessen the risk of colon cancer..

1. Quality Carbohydrates: Build your meal out of complex carbohydrate; the kind that are digested slowly to give you a longer, steadier stream of energy. Just about any high-fibre carbohydrate will do, including beans, brown rice, whole grain bread, quinoa, and vegetables such as Brussels sprouts and egg plant.

2. Healthy Fat: You'll need some healthy fat to help your body absorb all the goodness of certain fat-soluble nutrients in your meal (such as vitamins A, D and E). Fats also help you to feel fuller for longer. Try topping soups and salads with chopped walnuts and drizzling some olive oil on your whole wheat pasta. Sandwich lovers may want to replace mayonnaise with a few slices of creamy avocado.

3. Lean Protein: Make your meal "mostly veggie" and add some lean protein to give it more lasting power. Skinless chicken, lean meats, fish, tofu, eggs and beans are all excellent sources of protein.

Healthy Lifestyle Tip:

Why is good posture important?

When it comes to posture, your mother did know best. Her frequent reminders to stand up straight and stop slouching were good advice.
Your spine is strong and stable when you practice healthy posture. But, when you slouch, your muscles and ligaments struggle to keep you balanced which can lead to fatigue, back pain and other problems. The key is to practice good posture all the time. Stretching and strengthening exercises will help too.

Good standing posture
When standing, bear these tips in mind:

1) Hold your chest high
2) Keep your shoulders back and relaxed
3) Pull in your abdomen
4) Keep your feet parallel
5) Balance your weight evenly on both feet
6) Try not to tilt your head forward, backward or sideways, and make sure your knees are relaxed

Good posture increases your energy levels. This is partially due to the increased airflow and because when the body is in the natural good posture stance, the muscles will not be quite as stressed, therefore they are less likely to feel fatigued. Paying attention to your posture is the quickest way to benefit your health and appearance.

It would be nice, if who ever reads it , post their views

1) Never sit or stand in one position for more than 30 mins, it slows downs your 'blood circulation' which hammers your muscle growth and blood transport for 'Vital' organs such as 'Heart, Liver, Lungs and kidneys'.

2) Being in the same posture for more than 30 mins 'also' drys up your ligaments , esp. (the knee and ankle) , making the ligaments 'non lubricated' which is why you get a pain in such joints , if you have been staying in the same position for more than 30 mins.

The above two scenarios are 'extremely' applicable to Office desk based workers, as they sit for a very long time infront of PC's. Take 2 mins break away from desk every 30mins.

Always sit at a Right angle (90 degrees) position and sure your VDU (monitor) 's top frame is at eye level.

:ty:

Knee pain should not be taken lightly, as you age the ligaments in your knee becomes dry and may even tear, if it tears you will not be able to bend your knee and would be in severe pain! It is vital you keep your body weight in control, the heavier you are the more strain it is on your legs.

Strengthening your calf muscles with weight training would make your legs stronger hence less strain on your knees.

Vitamin D tables and calcium based products would strengthen your bones along with protein.

This knee ligament tearing is 'very' common in Football players, once it tears you need to have an operation and an artificial ligament will be planted in your knee

EATING and EXERCISING

Eating too much before exercising can cause you to feel sluggish or have an upset stomach. That's because your muscles and your digestive system are competing with each other for energy resources. On the other hand, not eating before you exercise can be just as bad. Low blood sugar levels that result from not eating can make you feel weak, faint or tired, and your mental abilities may be affected as well, making you slower to react. Aim for 150 to 200 calories about 30 to 60 minutes prior to your routine. Like a One banana or cereal bar before exercise can increase productivity from your exercise.
You'll feel better when you exercise if you eat foods high in carbohydrates and low in fat. Your body stores excess carbohydrates as glycogen, primarily in your muscles and liver. Your muscles use stored glycogen when needed for energy. Good carbohydrate sources include whole grain cereals, breads, pasta, brown rice; in addition to fruits and vegetables
To help your muscles recover and to replace their glycogen stores, eat a meal that contains both protein and carbohydrates within two hours of your exercise session. Protein isn't your body's food of choice for fueling exercise, but it does play a role in muscle repair and growth. Refuel with another 150 to 200 calories after your workout. Whey Protein shakes are ideal meals after work outs.

Healthy Lifestyle Tip:

Importance of Stretching

In a study reported in The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, volunteers followed a strength-training regime three times a week, with half of them adding two stretching sessions to their routines. After eight weeks, the flexible group had almost tripled their muscle strength.

Stretching just like lifting, causes tiny tears in your muscles as your body repairs them, the tissue becomes stronger says study co-author Jason Winchester, Ph.D., of George Mason University. Add 10 minutes of stretching to your post workout routine.

It is important to stretch after doing any physical activity. When muscles carry out any exercise, they tighten and shorten as a result. Stretching them out helps to restore and improve their length. When doing strength training, you should stretch each muscle group straight away after performing each set.

TIPS OF THE DAY

Years pass by and our kidneys are filtering the blood by removing salt, poison and any unwanted entering our body. With time, the salt accumulates and this needs to undergo cleaning treatments and how are we going to overcome this?

It is very easy, first take a bunch of parsley (MALLI Leaves)and wash it clean

Then cut it in small pieces and put it in a pot and pour clean water and boil it for ten minutes and let it cool down and then filter it and pour in a clean bottle and keep it inside refrigerator to cool.

Drink one glass daily and you will notice all salt and other accumulated poison coming out of your kidney by urination also you will be able to notice the difference which you never felt before.

Parsley is known as best cleaning treatment for kidneys and it is

Got this from an email

Qn: What are the thumb rules for a layman to take care of his heart?

Ans:
1. Diet - Less of carbohydrate, more of protein, less oil
2. Exercise - Half an hour's walk, at least five days a week; avoid lifts and avoid sitting for a longtime
3. Quit smoking
4. Control weight
5. Control blood pressure and sugar

Qn: Is eating non-veg food (fish) good for the heart?

Ans: No

Qn: It's still a grave shock to hear that some apparently healthy person
gets a cardiac arrest. How do we understand it in perspective?

Ans: This is called silent attack; that is why we recommend everyone past the age of 30 to undergo routine health checkups.

Qn: Are heart diseases hereditary?

Ans: Yes

Qn: What are the ways in which the heart is stressed? What practices do you suggest to de-stress?

Ans: Change your attitude towards life. Do not look for perfection in everything in life.

Qn: Is walking better than jogging or is more intensive exercise required to keep a healthy heart?

Ans: Walking is better than jogging since jogging leads to early fatigue and injury to joints

Qn: You have done so much for the poor and needy. What has inspired you to do so?

Ans: Mother Theresa , who was my patient

Qn: Can people with low blood pressure suffer heart diseases?

Ans: Extremely rare

Qn: Does cholesterol accumulates right from an early age
(I'm currently only 22) or do you have to worry about it only after you are above 30 years of age?

Ans: Cholesterol accumulates from childhood.

Qn: How do irregular eating habits affect the heart ?

Ans: You tend to eat junk food when the habits are irregular and your body's enzyme release for digestion gets confused.

Qn: How can I control cholesterol content without using medicines?

Ans: Control diet, walk and eat walnut.

Qn: Can yoga prevent heart ailments?

Ans: Yoga helps.

Qn: Which is the best and worst food for the heart?

Ans: Fruits and vegetables are the best and the worst is oil.

Qn: Which oil is better - groundnut, sunflower, olive?

Ans: All oils are bad .

Qn: What is the routine checkup one should go through? Is there any specific test?

Ans: Routine blood test to ensure sugar, cholesterol is ok. Check BP, Treadmill test after an echo.

Qn: How do you differentiate between pain caused by a heart attack and that caused due to gastric trouble?

Ans: Extremely difficult without ECG.

Qn: What is the main cause of a steep increase in heart problems amongst youngsters? I see people of about 30-40 yrs of age having heart attacks and serious heart problems.

Qn: Many of us have an irregular daily routine and many a times we have to stay late nights in office. Does this affect our heart ? What precautions would you recommend?

Ans : When you are young, nature protects you against all these irregularities. However, as you grow older, respect the biological clock.

Qn: Will taking anti-hypertensive drugs cause some other complications (short / long term)?

Ans : Yes, most drugs have some side effects. However, modern anti- hypertensive drugs are extremely safe.

Qn: Will consuming more coffee/tea lead to heart attacks?

Healthy Lifestyle Tip: Benefits of Green Tea
Although drinking tea has been associated with health benefits for centuries, only in the last few years has its medicinal properties been scientifically investigated. A recent Harvard health newsletter not only documented the healthy benefits of tea but listed tips on how to get the most out of each cup.

The newsletter says that tea's health benefits are mostly due to its high flavonoid content, plant-derived compounds that are antioxidants. Green tea is the best source in a group called catechins. In test tubes, catechins are actually more powerful than vitamins C and E in slowing oxidative damage to cells and appear to have other disease-fighting properties. Studies have also found an association between drinking green tea and the reduced risk for several cancers, including, skin, breast, lung, colon, oesophageal and bladder.

Additional benefits for regular consumers of green and black teas include a reduced risk of heart disease. The antioxidants in green, black and oolong teas can help block the oxidation of LDL (bad) cholesterol, increase HDL (good) cholesterol and improve artery function. A Chinese study published recently in the Archives of Internal Medicine showed a 46%-65% reduction in the risk of hypertension in regular consumers of oolong or green tea, compared to non-consumers of tea.

Tips on how to get the most out of drinking tea:
Drink a cup of tea a few times a day to absorb antioxidants and other healthy plant compounds. Allow tea to brew for three to five minutes to bring out its catechins. The best way to get the catechins and other flavonoids in tea is to drink it freshly brewed. Decaffeinated, bottled ready-to-drink and instant teas contain less of these compounds.

Healthy Lifestyle Tip: Mental Health
"You're working out your brain at the same time you are working your heart," says Thomas Cook, Ph.D. a clinical psychologist and memory researcher. Cardiovascular health is more important than any other factor in preserving and improving learning and memory.

People who exercised during their working day were 23 per cent more productive on those days than they were when they didn't exercise, says a study from the International Journal of Workplace Health Management.

In one study, researchers scanned the brains of people who exercised for one hour per day, three days a week, for six months. They discovered an increase in the size of the hippocampus, the part of the brain that controls memory and learning. Working out literally made the participants' brains larger and allowed them to do things better that required concentration and recall.

"Exercise improves attention, memory, accuracy and how quickly you process information, all of which helps you make smarter decisions," Says Charles H. Hillman, Ph. D., an associate professor of kinesiology and community health at the University of Illinois. All that extra blood bathes your brain cells in oxygen and glucose, which they need to function. The more they get the better they perform.

Tomato

Are loaded with lycopine and are indeed pure heart and blood food.

Grapes

Grapes are also profound heart and blood vitalizing food.

Walnut

We now know walnuts help develop more than three (3) dozen neuron-transmitters for brain function.

Kidney Beans

heals and help maintain kidney function and yes, they look exactly like the human kidneys.

Celery, Bok Choy, Rhubarb

These foods specifically target bone strength. Bones are 23% sodium and these foods are 23% sodium. If you don't have enough sodium in your diet, the body pulls it from the bones, thus making them weak. These foods replenish the skeletal needs of the body.

avocados, Eggplant and Pears

target the health and function of the womb and cervix of the female - they look just like these organs. Today's research shows that when a woman eats one avocado a week, it balances hormones, sheds unwanted birth weight, and prevents cervical cancers. And how profound is this? It takes exactly nine (9) months to grow an avocado from blossom to ripened fruit. There are over 14,000 photolytic chemical constituents of nutrition in each one of these foods. Modern science has only studied and named about 141 of them.

Sweet Potatoes

balances the glycemic index of diabetics.

Onions

help clear waste materials from all of the body cells. They even produce tears which wash the epithelial layers of the eyes. A working companion, Garlic, also helps eliminate waste materials and dangerous free radicals from the body.

Liver Detox With Epsom Salt

The liver plays a major role in sustaining life. When it is damaged or overtaxed, our bodies can become toxic. An unhealthy diet and other factors like alcohol and some medications can damage and inflame the liver. The filtration system can get clogged with cholesterol and other toxic debris. An Epsom salt cleanse in conjunction with milk thistle can be used to detox and tonify the liver.

Ingredients

½ cup olive or coconut oil

1 large grapefruit or ¾ cup fresh grapefruit juice (lemon juice may also be used--fresh-squeezed is best.)

½ cup Epsom salt

4 tablets of the natural sleep enhancer L-ornithine--(500 mg) is recommended by The Natural Path website.

A bottle of milk thistle capsules

The oil stimulates the gallbladder as well as the liver to expel extra bile. Any gallstones that are blocking the liver's biliary ducts will be forced out.

Epsom Salt is a strong laxative that also relaxes the biliary ducts.

Day 1

On the day of the cleanse, avoid ingestion of as much fat as possible. Eat no later than 2 p.m. This recommended by all of the practitioners that support this type of cleanse. The water and Epsom salt can be mixed before hand. Mix 4 tablespoons of Epsom salt into 3 cups of distilled water and place in the refrigerator to chill before beginning the cleanse. Drinking this mixture cold makes it more palatable.

At around 6 p.m., shake the Epsom salt/water mixture and drink ¾ cup.

At 8 p.m., drink another 3/4 cup of the Epsom salt/water mixture.

At 10 p.m., mix ½ cup of olive oil with the grapefruit or lemon juice in a jar. Shake well until it is completely mixed. Drink the mixture as quickly as possible.

Take the sleeping aids and go directly to bed. Recommendations vary; either lie flat or on your right side with your knees drawn up for 20 minutes. The key is to be as still as possible for 20 minutes. After that, go to sleep.

Day 2

Wake at 6 a.m. and drink ¾ cup of the Epsom salt/water mixture.

At 8 a.m. drink another 3/4 cup of the Epsom salt/water mixture.

After 10 a.m., you can have some fresh juice. After about 30 minutes, eat some fresh fruit. Later you can introduce light foods back into your diet. Refrain from eating meat or fried foods.

Other Instructions
Epsom salt is a strong laxative so you will probably have diarrhea-like symptoms. It is important to replenish any lost fluids with distilled water for the duration of the cleanse.

Begin the milk thistle directly after the cleanse. Start with 200 mg and increase through the week until you are taking 600 mg. Continue at this dosage until the bottle is empty.

A colonic or enema may be beneficial after the cleanse to wash away any remaining toxic material.

[tscii:2bd349f08b]Healthy Lifestyle Tip:

The Tiny Salt Cutback

You may only need to cut a mere half a teaspoon of salt from your diet to see a benefit to your heart and brain. In a dramatic new study, researchers estimate that cutting out just three grams of salt a day (about half a teaspoon) could prevent up to 99,000 heart attacks and 66,000 strokes a year.

So what's half a teaspoon? It's the amount most of us probably put in our pasta water. Still, it's unlikely that your pasta water is putting you over the limit. Research suggests we get up to 75 per cent of our daily salt intake from processed foods and restaurant meals. In fact, processed and packaged foods have so much sodium that most of us end up eating 8 to 11 grams of salt a day – more than twice the recommended amount.

Kick the Salt Habit by trying these tips and tricks

Read all labels before preparing food so you know how much sodium you're starting with.
Buy the low-sodium versions of pre-packaged, frozen, tinned, or jarred foods and sauces.
Opt for fresh veggies over canned.
Make things from scratch when you can, to control the sodium content.
Rinse canned foods before using.
Don't add salt to the water when you boil pasta or rice.
Don't use the flavour packets that come with instant or prepared foods, just do your own seasoning.
Choose fresh whole cuts of meat or fish over-processed, pressed, cured, or tinned.
Choose fresh herbs and salt-free spices instead of salt.
Try oil with red wine vinegar or lemon juice instead of salty salad dressings.
Season lean meat and vegetables with onions, mushrooms, peppers, and other fresh and savoury flavours.
Stuff fresh crunchy vegetables into sandwiches or wraps instead of pickles or olives.
So hide your salt shaker, read labels carefully, and choose whole, fresh foods whenever you can. [/tscii:2bd349f08b]

Taking breaks during the day and eating food which is rich in protein are good ways to avoid weight gain at work, according to an expert in nutrition.

Helen Heap, nutritional therapist at the Dr Marilyn Glenville Clinic, was commenting following research from the University of Montreal, which revealed a link between an increase in office jobs and rising obesity rates.

Ms Heap said: "Making sure [you take] designated breaks ... will stimulate metabolism and the digestive system. A good lunch would be ... protein rich with beans, tofu or chicken."

She suggested eating food with a low glycaemic index, which she said leaves a person feeling fuller for longer and will make them less likely to snack on unhealthy sugary treats.

Desk-based employees are going to be at risk from gaining weight as they work long hours in sedentary jobs and eat unhealthy "quick fix foods" to give them energy, she said.

Vitamin company Nutrilite undertook a study which revealed that only about one third of women in the US are consuming the recommended daily amount of fruit and vegetables.

THE DONT'S AFTER FOOD

Don't smoke-Experiment from experts proves that smoking a cigarette after meal is comparable to smoking 10 cigarettes

Don't drink tea - Because tea leaves contain a high content of acid. This substance will cause the Protein content in the food we consume to be hardened thus difficult to digest.

Don't bathe - Bathing will cause the increase of blood flow to the hands, legs & body thus the amount of blood around the stomach w ill therefore decrease. This will weaken the digestive system in our stomach.
Don't sleep immediately - The food we intake will not be able to digest properly. Thus will lead to gastric & infection in our intestine.
