Enna maddy surya in ae better than devaganam in yuva - why does that warrant a sei aakasu level reaction?

Actually, in the same movie*n the hindi actors playing the other 2 lead male roles were better than the tamil counterparts - I am sure grouch will agree with this;-) so no need for extreme reaction ;-)

Yeah, same film, same script, same meesic, same director, same....you get the pix, but different actors. Sure, it warrants comparison. But at the same time, intha Gauvaram dialak mindla vanthuduthu:

Kannan: Ungga kooda enna compare panaatheel.
Rajinikanth: Yenda badava, en kooda compete panna porel, compare panna kudathoo? :?

I deny the existence of any such classification. Only 'good' and 'bad' exist. And this is the same movie !

namakku pachchai paavam-naalum hara paap-naalum unseletted unseletted dhaan.

Kashyap dialogues worked only here and there. The scene where Lallan's brother feels threatened was attempted humour ("there's nothing in the world that can't be talked out","sit here, we will talk it out' etc.). Made a caricature of that guy for a laugh. Made me realize how 'real' the scene was in Tamil. He gets up from his meal very angry and is cowered by the crowd and even his 'begging' is subtle (there are women and children in this house).

Btw I even like Siddharth-Trisha better than Kapoor-Oberoi

The major difference is Om Puri again. Seemed all about pronouncing "poshchim bongal" and very little about the essence of sliminess.

BR: Look I am very much proud of you  and his look at Surya saying "irundhu..?"

It's like the essence of that scene was totally missed.

Guys,

This is not a remake. Pain on the $$$ to shoot both the films parallelly for any film maker. It gives me heart attack if I think about it Thank God he managed. MR has his merits and demerits in shooting tamil and hindi films in casting, extracting performances, technicians etc....and not to blame hindi associates. If you guys want to prove that Surya is a better actor switch forward to Perazhagan. Thats a remake!

Lets forget the terminology - devagaNam was poor in Yuva. "Surya was better than DevagaNam in that role" is an understatement multiple times over. It is not a compliment at all, and doesnt capture Surya's performance half-adequately.
Similarly with Puri vs Chinnasamy.
Every other possible 'acting' comparison in the hindi vs tamil versions of the movie can be considered a contest, at the least.

What are the requirements for transforming a book or movie into a cult object?” Mr. Eco asked. “The work must be loved, obviously, but this is not enough. It must provide a completely furnished world so that its fans can quote characters and episodes as if they were aspects of the fan’s private sectarian world, a world about which one can make up quizzes and play trivia games so that the adepts of the sect recognize through each other a shared expertise

I stick to my evaluation. By this definition, Andaz Apna Apna is a Major Cult Movie in Hindi. HPKJ can be considered a minor cult movie going by the impact in said terms.[/tscii:419ef1f9cc]

[tscii:000a19b4c4]Mani Rathnam is undoubtedly one of the trend setters of Tamil Cinema. As I appreciate him for his story telling & directorial skills, I truly admire this man for his patriotism. I say this not because his films, off-late, is against terrorism and eventually leads to patriotism. That’s from a creator’s point of view. But as a principled man, I see him as a true patriot because as far as I know, he has never shot a song sequence or for that matter, any scene in a foreign country. On the contrary, he has been striving hard to show India beautifully, on screen. Minji minji pona, Sri Lanka poyiruppar, and we all know the reason behind Guru’s Russian episode – so, let’s leave it.

With my little knowledge, I would say that even Kurosawa has not shot any films outside Japan ( I really, don’t know). And, I suppose that even many European & Asian directors will be in the same league.

2. The scene where Rajni’s valrtha patti tells him devaraj vendamda “unga amma vandhu ketta naan enna solluven” Rajni replies “epdi epdi….” <porumai>
3. Banupriya’s daughter asks Rajni why he is crying? Rajni replies “karuppa irudhadhaala thooki pottuta” And the child replies “illai, irukkadhu” <mudiyala>
4. The scene where Banupriya covers her daughter with that 3 decade old shawl to make Srividya recognize her expelled child <mudiyala2>

There are lot….It certainly makes me think that MR awfully underwent lot of compromises and adopted Ist & last page of TR’s dialoq and Visu’s sentimental books. MR filmsla paasamna pattum padamalum nachunnu irukkum inga panikattiya karanji voduthu.. ZOOM ZOOM Now this sentimental angles are reflected miraculously in camera face focusing adventures right from Ramana’s leeching face to Jaishankar’s grimace. My Photo Editor failed to express such tricks. In this sense, the movie is poorly written…

What I like the most in the film is Banupriya’s character. Her intro is a brilliant scene! Cinematic brilliance! In a shady focus, the widowed pregnant wife weeps and kneels down facing the wall a symbolic expression of her unlikeliness towards his husbands character and her baby’s future. This scene and the silence she maintains through out the film is terrific …. But the shawl scene spoiled the whole feast!

Whats wrong with Nayakan songs it seams like very much underrated.. It was a genius score for the script…

I don't think so. He simply chooses not to speak, IMG :-)

In any case, my reference was from an average viewer's perspective where the location of the story is well set in the mind. (Another example, I cannot imagine the strong effects of films like pathinAru vayadhinilE, moondRam piRai etc without the viewer imagining to be present in the actual place like kEthi or sappAni's village near Theni)

Possibly my way of enjoying a movie is throwing myself into the scene (sometimes even into one of the characters of the movie). That does not happen with thaLabathi. Actually when Srividya says why so much of violence in this place, I felt like screaming 'what place are you talkin' about' :-(

Just a sample scene watch and decide yourself (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvxRLceGRU4&feature=channel). The inspector's son, wife all speaks tamil but velu naicker cant speak a single word. He needs a translator! Even if you need to step out of this MR created only tamilians land (another blunder only delhi ganesh knows hindi) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIAi9VzuEDY&feature=channel) in mumbai (say for a grocery store) you need to know Marathi/Hindi. How a child like velu naicker could have survived! Like venkiram said this is highly inexcusable if Mani has to recreate this today! Hindi ethirpu adhigama irundhurukka koodum and tell me how many tamil movies were made in a different state those days...

Bala,

That was something similar but couldn't recall the exact context.

Plum

I think it is quite plausible. Maddy has just given real life examples "Indhi terriyadhu", "telugu teriyadhu" is a useful facade for me - not out of mozhi fanaticism but some practical benefits do I use this facade often. Someone in velu's position might have had great use for this facade. It can lead to local goons underestimating him and spilling on more than they should in his presence.oru gang maindain pannanumnA, you do have use for weapons that caan surprise. There are a thousand such possbilities to consider this a major flaw. Grocery storela when he grew up, he might have used hindi who knows?
Remember that only we see naicker's history in 3 hours. For people in dharavi, how many would remember his childhood? Whether he knows hindi or not will be his word taken at face value. The man survived an alien land for tendulkar's sake. You cannot expect to reveal himself fully to everyone all the time. There will be surprises. Ofcourse, mudaliar might have had darker secrets than the honourable, loyal friend, won't do drugs, punish the rapist do gooder that mani showed us. But that's hardly the point right?

app_engine
18th January 2010, 05:07 AM
I have met people who have been from their childhood in Detroit (not one or two just too many of them, from various backgrounds - middle east / euro / hispanic / namma sub-continentu etc) who can max say 'no speak inglees'.

Whether they really can't or pretend to others I can't say.

To think that MR is too dumb in this case - i.e. to show Velu Naicker using an interpreter, so as to be picked on by the likes of us - sounds simply funny to me:-) It is a deliberate portrayal I say, not a "miss"!

MADDY
18th January 2010, 07:36 AM
and yes, Maniratnam, himself has lived in Mumbai for some time - so i dont think he can miss it......going by mani's style, maybe varadarja mudaliar never spoke hindi in real life :)

Plum,

A setu has come to demolish your house and knowingly you simply chose not to speak hindi... he...he....

Its not just velu naicker alone the whole environs were unable to speak till the end of the movie and to his cinematic favour all the officers, a constable, inspector, wife there speaks tamil. I am not nitpicking since the locality was foregrounded it sounds highly inconceivable to me and some others.

Lets move on.....

He is generally good in all movies he has done though most of them were poor in quality in terms of making. He is very good at emoting (enna koncham overA emote paNNiduvaar) and he does things beyond the required level due to over enthusiastic attitude. Immaturity is one reason and being mutli talented at a very young age is another. athellAm kAlapOkkula sariyAyidum. Arya ellAm actor listla irukkathE avar senja puNNiyam. There used to be an actor called Jeeva - avaru kamal'ku aduthathA nambikkai natchathiram mAthiri idhE hubla pEsikkitaanga oru kAlathula :lol2: Bharath is another overhyped case. I had always felt that if Simbu got the opportunity of working with some good directors he could very easily prove what a good actor he is. He should also forget about directing and involving in other technical stuff for sometime.

I sincerely hope MR movie materialises for him and I look forward to his VTV.

IndiaGlitz [Thursday, February 11, 2010]

Even as his ‘Raavan’ is yet to be released, Mani Ratnam seems to have signed up Silambarasan for his next project.

Mani Ratnam is usually a silent director and never speculates about his next project when an ongoing project is yet to release, but he seems to have broken the myth and sources say his next movie will be with Silambarasan.

Mani’s ‘Raavan’ will hit the screens in June, but he will start script work for his next project before that. Sources say, Mani’s next project, for which he’s also the producer, will also be a bi-lingual, in Tamil and Hindi where Ranbir Kapoor will be doing the hero’s role. The shooting for the movie would most probably start in November, later this year.

Nityanand starlet part of Raavana

The aftermath of the sex scandal involving Swami Nityanand has even touched Mani Ratnam's ambitious project Raavana.

It is now confirmed that Tamil film star Ranjitha, who was allegedly filmed in a compromising position with Swami Nityanand, is playing a role in the Tamil version of the bilingual Raavana.

After the controversy hit national headlines, Ranjitha went underground and a shocked Mani Ratnam was for a moment faced with the dilemma of reshooting her portions with another actress or going ahead with Ranjitha. Eventually, he opted for the latter.

Ranjitha plays the role of Raavana's sister-in-law in the Tamil version. South superstar Vikram plays the title role in the Tamil version, while he has done Ram's role in the Hindi version.

Ranjitha has come under the spotlight after it emerged that rather than being a victim of the sting operation, she was allegedly the one who released the sex tapes with Swami Nityanand in public.

Sources in the Tamil film industry say that Ranjitha, a mother of two, fell in love with Swami Nityanand and they shared an intimate relationship. But apparently Ranjitha turned vengeful when Nityanand not only refused to marry her but allegedly also started seeing other women.

What is an example of a children's movie then ?
Let me try…….. :)

IMO, any children’s film should, in first place, be appealing to a child. The child should completely enjoy it and should be able to make sense of what’s being conveyed to him. If possible, the film should transport the kid to an altogether different world. In this context, a film based on folk tale or fairy tale with lots of adventure that kids love to watch can be considered as a children’s film.

The film should not make him cry, should not exceedingly scare him and should not put him in the dark by allowing him to squeeze his little brain in order to figure out what’s happening on screen. Most importantly, it should not leave him wondering as to what that uncle and aunty are doing on a Motta Maadi :D . And, if the child can understand what’s happening there, can we still call him a child and the film a children’s film ?? We can have complan boys as exceptional case :D .

When I was a kid, I loved to watch films like “ Maya Bazar “ ( old b&w one ), “ Bathala Bhairavi “, “ Kanavaney kan kanda deivam “, “ Manalaney mangayin bhakiyam “ etc., for the magic scenes. DD used to telecast them.

I would say “ My dear kuttichathan “ was an excellent film for children. Also, films like “ Kuzhandaigal kanda kudiyarasu “ , “ Vaa raja vaa “ & “ Anadhai Anandhan “ (based on Oliver Twist) are good examples of children’s film.

Hope you guys understand that I’ve nothing against Anjali and that all I was trying to say is that it’s not a complete children’s film.

Anjali did all of this.
Even the adhigaprasangithanam had a fairytale-ness (as in, I wish this is how my world was) to it. Naan ellAm appo emphatic-A yAr kittayaavadhu yEdhAvadhu sollittu: "When I say somthing you listen to that.." nu paada aarambichuruvEn

We didn't walk down drainpipes to hang out with friends midnight. But sure wished we could. Not did we ride bicycles across the moon, or go on interplanetary family tours.

At the same time, it was very very accessible and 'real'.

And the older brother being embarassed by the lack of social etiquette of his sister (who will go right of the bat, about asking their parents if they are going to get a divorce is perfect). Quite obviously he is older and can't take his kid sister along in midnight jaunts though she rightlyfully protests his pockeing of the uNdial kaasu( அதுல என்னோடதும் இருக்கு).All these I liked even back then.

We didn't perhaps know that an affair is. What exactly is it that Revathi is mad at Raghuvaran for. But surely enough to know something wrong was going on. In fact making the child witness to that and sheathing it in a lie (that he is out of town etc.) MR manages to draw it to a vice more familiar to children - lying.

Childrens' films usually end Happily Ever After. Rather than use this as a rule to deny Anjali's status as a children's film. I'd rather say Anjali broke the rule. One can't but laud MR.[/tscii:1bb271c18a]

I was one among those mischievous kid (10) there heartbreakingly watching the child in the death bed. Never seen anything like that. Definitely, I would have also hated such a child in my friends circle. Anjali is a tump over emotional drama for a kid who is so fond of cartoons, action & adventurous flicks. For that age the movie agnizes several of plays downstream which itself a biggest achievement. One such is the mother was told her child was dead during birth and one fine day she comes to see the same child much more frailer and dying soon. How painful! Raghuvaran evidenced a perfective performance. And MUSIC! IR :notworthy:

Great post on 'anjali,' PR. I've to admit that watching 'pasanga' made me realise the accomplishments of Mani Ratnam in 'anjali' in a much better way. I do realise that the former is set in a completely different universe and its ambience is itself an accomplishment, but I think it has little to offer in terms of seeing the world through a kid's viewpoint. Here's an earlier post (http://forumhub.mayyam.com/hub/viewtopic.php?p=1835680#1835680) on the two films.

[tscii:d11d1ab929]Mani Ratnam meets Rajkiran
IndiaGlitz [Tuesday, April 20, 2010]

We told you some time ago this was coming. Sources say Mani Ratnam had invited Rajkiran to his office a few days ago discussed a role in his forthcoming bilingual. Mani's ‘Raavan’ is all ready and set to hit the theatres. Mani had even released a teaser for ‘Raavan’ to confirm things.

After releasing ‘Raavan’ Mani will start again a bilingual in Tamil and Hindi. Mani wants Rajkiran to play an important character in the Tamil version of the new venture. That was the reason for the hush meeting. Mani has tentatively titled the new film ‘Aasaan’ and scheduled to start the shoot in November.

Meanwhile sources close to Rajkiran says that Rajkiran will launch a new film titled 'Thirumangalathu Yaanai' in the first week of June. It will be produced and directed by Rajkiran himself. And he hopes to be ready for Mani's film in November.

I got what you were trying to convey. It's just that I am a little pissed off with the likes of Nanditha Das,rahul Dholakia and all the print and TV media who go on and on and on and on about the 2002 gujarat riots and how the muslim community is misunderstood.

I mean has riots never happened in India before Godhra 2002???????

Is it not a fact that Muslims have always been looked upon with a tinge of doubt much before we had heard the name "Narendra Modi"????????

We need to analyse why a large section of people have hatred for the community and is there something they can do to dispel the notion if it is wrong instead of trying to make movies which run in multiplexes and win awards and the director who also gives out media interviews taking pot shots at the BJP,RSS,Sangh parivar and the most importantly Modi gets branded a secularist, rationalist and what not!

The last thing I want is Mani squeezing the same subject.

Good question.. There was this deleted scene from Kannathil Muthamitaal when Prakash Raj talks to PS Keerthana about the situation in Sri Lanka.. The scene was shot with the discussions about the Tamils, singhalese, government etc with the heli copters and tankers shown in the background. After all post production works, including the re-recording from ARR, Mani edited those scenes saying "why would a nine year old girl would want to know what is happening in SL, she is there just to visit her Mom" ...

I dont think he is making movies for educating even his characters in the movie..

Mani Rathnam is one of the most Entertaining Directors in Indian Cinema. His movies always grab ur attention with Intriguing storylines, decorated with a star studded cast, original but slightly repetitive (by himself) dialogues, great music, refreshing presentation and gift wrapped with good editing. But an educator? I'm not sure of that just yet.

Nevermind his classy top notch entertainers Nayagan, Agni Natchathiram, Thalapathy, Alaipayuthe etc. His movies which try convey a social message like Bombay, Kannathil Muthamittal, Aitha Ezuthu etc aren't really that powerful. These subjects don't teach us anything, the things he tries to tell us are things we already know, atleast for the most part.

Out of the 3 movies i mentioned, I thought Aitha Ezuthu was the best as far as "teaching" goes.

I'd like to see Mani Rathnam experiment with more abstract subjects, maybe Period Films, Stories from unexplored section of Society, Horror, etc. Iruvar was a well made period film, but not accurate in any way. Guru (not considering the Ambani Factor) was good, but it surely had the potential to be Great! :)

Tell Us Something which we Don't Know Mani Rathnam! :D It'll defiantly make u a top grosser in TN again! 8-)

As I said earlier Mouna Raagam got only 43 marks in vikatan review.

Here is the review

Santosh Sivan to shoot Mani Ratnam's next!

Popular cinematographer Santosh Sivan will work with ace director Mani Ratnam in his upcoming project tentatively titled Azaan. There are reports that Bollywood's latest sensation Ranbir Kapoor will play the lead role. Santosh Sivan had earlier shot Mani’s first Hindi film Dil Se.

“I do have my hands full. I also have four days work left for my acting assignment. And yes, Mani has asked me to shoot his next film. And there’s no question of saying no to Mani Ratnam. What you see as going out of my way for Mani Ratnam is not really that. Anyone who works with him would do exactly that,” Santosh said.

nAyagan can easily be trimmed off of three songs (or at least make them one minute versions - nAn siriththAl, nilA adhu, andhi mazhai mEgham)

And this is coming from someone who loves those songs simply as songs (why even as music videos, but had no reason to exist in the movie that long)!

It's not about who knows MR better. Of course, Suhasini will know him the most. I think the laughter is for the point made!
