This is on a brief part of ancient chola history,,
ka.aa.appathuraiyaar says that there were originally a Karikalan( 155-105 B.C.E.) , the son of Valancaet Cenni (who was the great grandson of Ilancaet Cenni, the Chola king who defeated invading ASOKA THE GREAT'S Mauryan army c.272 B.C.E.).Karikalan-meant having strong, large thighs like an elephant. This Karikalan ascended the throne just after the time when the then Pandyan king had lost a battle in SOUTH KALINGA to KHARAVELA the Kalinga king, while on an expedition to north India .Angered by Kharavela's proclamation of disintegrating the thamizh forces, Karikalan started his huge, victorious campaign of conquering all the North Indian kingdoms, which he completed with embarkation of the tiger emblem on the face of a himalayan peak(153 B.C.E.).
Later there came a series of kings named after the original KARIKALAN THE GREAT, most probably his grandson was Karikalan-II and Karikalan-II's grandson was Karikalan-III.
Karikalan-III was as almost as great as his forefather Karikalan the first.Unfortunately his father was killed even before he was bornm, in a plot by cera and pandyan kings of the time. His mother, the queen who was carrying Karikalan-III in her womb was driven away from the Chola capital Uraiyur whence she arrived at her father's house and lived there thereafter.Troubles continued as their house was burnt down in aplot by their enemies.Karikalan-III as a boy of 10 was caught in the fire his legs charred . Thus his birthname became true to the meaning "black(charred) legs".He was grown as a brave young man by his uncle and his beloved master. His master was a Chera knight and a Pandyan minister of the time, who then quit Madurai due to conflict with Pandyan king over protecting Karikalan-III from falling into enemies'hands and bringing him up.
Karikalan-III after gathering sufficient army attacked URAIYUR, defeated the Chera-Pandya combined army and drove them away.He then seized the throne and soon invaded Vanji and Madurai and conquered cera and pandyan kingdoms. He also had conquered other south Indian kingdoms of his time.In his later years, he again invaded Cera kingdom now led by their great valiant king Nedunceralaadhan , who was the father of Cenguttuvan the great(of Cilappadhigaaram).
Anyone can add more on ancient kingline and historical events?
