Well...Kamal has acted in MANY Action Movies. His "ACTION" movies are amoung the best in the industry....:thumbsup:

Nilavu Nilavu !! What can I say ??? In case you forgot, the word MASALA came into existence in the early 80s mainly for action-oriented movies .. And in those days, ppl split Rajini as an Action hero, and Kamal as a lover boy !!! I agree Kamal did some action movies in between, but on a broader scale, it's Rajini all the way ... Talking about stunt scenes, in Pithamagan, the first 'Parotta Kadai' fight is realistic and also unconventional. The choreography and the way its shot is different from the usual scenes.

Surya - Nanda to a certain extent but i liked the Mayajaal fight in Ayudha Ezhuthu better. The fight starts very realistically - pesitte irukkumbodhu dhideernu drawing first blood as in real life, unlike shouting warnings like "Aeyy!"

I wonder what is the definition of action here?

In my book, there is only one actor who can handle it well, with poise, with grace, and fierce determination that includes risking his life to perform stunts. That man is Kamal Haasan.

Few examples:

Sathya: Father of all the current underdog against bigwig don/politician films. Check out the fight sequence and other action scenes. The fight with Nasar on the bike. The chase that leads to the song Potta Vadiyuthu. Basically all the fight sequences.

Vetri Vizha: All the chase sequence and my favourite is the fight in the lift. Quick, sharp and very dangerous.

Indiran Chandran: Again, the fights and check out the scene where Chandran, disguised as Indiran, as to quickly sneak out of the car, settle somethign and get back to the political event he is attending. out of the car, on the roof, etc. He's everywhere. No stuntman.


Michael Madhana Kamarajan: Fixing the speeding car's brake. Need I say more. No stunt double. No blue screen. that's Kamal you see there. Very thrilling and funny scene.

Kakichattai: I can't recall the fight scene, but I remember a chase scene where our Kamal hangs from a freakin' moving crane!

In those days, each time a Kamal movie comes out, the highlight would be the fight/action and what stunt he is going to pull off, literally.

There are a lot more that I have missed out.

These days he mostly resorts to blue screen and wires to do the job. Once in a while, we do get some real stuff.

Kamal is actually the ultimate action king.

Good Post! Nowadays action is mostly depend on camera tricks and technology ,not the personal efforts of the actor.

I always noticed the difference in stunt scenes done by kamal .When somebody hit him ,you can see the pain in his face .He facial expression includes defence ,not just offence .I don't see this with many other heroes.

but here is a short description...ajith rides a bike at over 100 kmph and stands on the bike and shoots with a gun......while moving at the same speed.....it was risk-taking and much talked about.....

groucho....no way you will be offending me...pls feel free to express your opinion....i agree there are graphics in it....but i am talking about the shooting sequence when he is riding at a high speed....you can see that in the end...when he tries to balance it...he tries to straighten the handle...and then shoots....there were lots of articles on this stunt sequence and people saying that ajith is taking very high risks....even rajini had advised ajith to be careful on taking high risks in stunt sequences and asked him to use a double.....coz 100s of crores is lying behind AJITH....

This is something which I have seen only in Professional Boxers. Kamal's style is quite similar to that !
This is one of my favorite sequences in Kamal's fights ! This can be clearly seen in VV !

The Action king as done it again! It's old news that for Maruthamalai, producer Oscar Ravichandran has roped in the Dhoom II's action director Ali Ameen. And the action sequences in Maruthamalai is said to be in the never before seen league.

In one of the stunt sequences, the hero has to fall from a high rise building.

To make it look more realistic it was decided to tie him on to a rope and just when he reaches the ground level, the rope would be tightened before being released again, as there would be no spongy surface but hard ground. Even though this may sound a little easy it is indeed a very risky stunt. Arjun decided to do the stunt himself without a dupe, and has done it extremely well. He just proved why he is called the Action King. Three cheers to the Action king!

Recently I watched his Chinna and Rhythm (both which I love)! Anyway, despite being in the field all these years, he still proves that he is the best guy for action! Happy Birthday!

Rajni Sir - He won't do much stunts. But, with his eyes, body language & screen presence - a simple stunt will look mindblowing...
Ex: Thalapathy, Badsha, etc :thumbsup:

Kamal Sir- He like 2 do new thinks & explore a lot. His stunts normally realistic and awesome. Kai vasam niraya vittai thrinjavaru (karate, natyam, silambam etc etc). So, stunts come naturally to him without any difficulties.
Ex: Devar Magan (silambam), Anbe Sivam (umbrella) and lately Vetaiyadu Vilayadu & the list goes on... :thumbsup:

Ajith - In present generation, he's Thala. Normally he avoids dupe & tries everything on his own. Unfortunately, the directors are not utilize him fully (as he's good in bike, car racing & plane handling). Ex: Paramasivan. Eventhough, his bike scenes were awesome, the graphic part spoiled the scenes. With some extra effort by director & cameraman, Ajith's stunts will be mind blowing (as wat we see in English movies or even Hindi movies). Let's pray for the best for Billa. :thumbsup:

Vikram & Surya
Both f them f their own share in stunt sequences. One can never forget the fight sequence Surya did in Ayutha Ezhuthu. This is wat I meant earlier. The fight is simple but the way it was captured is really awesome. As for Vikram, his stunts in Dhool really nice especially with "Marutha Veeran Thaane" song in the background. :thumbsup:

So, my point, everyone got their own talent in showing their stunt abilities. It's upto the director & stunt master to fully utilize the actor and show him as a mass + class action hero in a grand manner. Of course, cameraman plays major role in capturing stunt sequences in a realistic manner.

I loved Vedham, but more so for the romanca. It was his own movie apparently.

Action-wise, he rocked in Giri and in Manikanda (not a great film overall), the flashback with him and the fight before the father Arjun was killed was amazing.

Despite what people may think, I feel that Arjun deserves to be on the list more than anyone else.

Was watching Nayagan last weekend.....theres a scene where his daughter drives the car playfully along the beach with kamal and Janagaraj in the back seat. After a sudden brake kamal wud be thrown out infront of the car....at normal viewing no one wud feel how risky was that....bcos there was no huge flying/jumping......but the speciality abt that stunt was it was REAL.

Kamal is known for performing some REAL breathtaking stunts which wud go unnoticed for the very reason it is REAL and without any gimmicks.

Kamal is the undisputed king of stunt sequences ever.

THALA has severe back problems and he gets affected quite frequently while stressing a bit physically. I have witnessed in person the pain he goes thru during some shootings. He is someone who takes risks of the highest order.

A very nice post Rockydeva.

Action is a combination of both powerful acting and performing stunts.
Kamal is obviously a champion in both these aspects. He is extremely fit. eventhough Vijaykanth and Arjun were known for their built body kamal is any day better than them and they r light yrs behind kamal when it comes to powerful expressions/acting during action sequences.

But THALA is not far behind in action sequences. He outshines everyone else with his powerful expressions and body language. He creates a huge impact without gimmicks and flying stuff.
Some examples are:
* Barathanatyam fight in varalaaru
* The college fight in Ji
* Plaza corner scene in Dheena
* Shutter fight in Dheena
* Amarkalam fight sequences

I bet NO ONE cud have done the barathanatyam fight better than THALA. Thats my most favorite fight ever. Mindboggling expression, anger in eyes, swift movements, etc.

If Kamal is the emperror THALA is surely the king (by all means...not just abt action)

I responded to this long time ago. But I don't mind repeating.

To me, Kamal holds the title for now. Maybe someone will come along and do something greater.

Two films that has so far been unequaled as far as fight sequences are concerned:

1. Sathya
2. Vetri Vizha.

To a smaller extend.
Apoorva Sahotharargal and MMKR. Kakichattai and Vikram was good at its time, but looks a bit dated. I would vote for TTT, but the fight is influenced by Jackie Chan.


Special Mention.
Rajini in Un Kannil Neer Vazhinthal. There is something hypnotic about those fights.

Honorable mention actually for Rajini, because before martial arts came into pix in early eighties, Rajini had his own unique style of fighting. The one and only time in Tamizh film history, if I may add.

Family audience go for a movie ONLY if it good and entertaining.
Even thou kreedam is good it cant be termed as an entertainer.

THALA's best 2 movies in the last 7 yrs are Villain and Varalaru. Even though THALA's performance was mindboggling Villain and Varalaru are not 100% entertainers.
Unfortunately for some reason THALA never got an action packed entertainer like Gilli, Dhool, Saamy, Run, Gajini, etc.
I am having huge hopes on Billa. Hope Billa wud be something like above mentioned movies.

Its a pity that after villain varalaru is the only THALA movie which attracted family audience. The truth is that no other THALA nmovie had anything for the common man or the family audience.

I made a small calcul ... you said varalaaru collected 10 crores in 2 days ... that means 5 crores in 1 day :

50 000 000 => 5 crores
let's say that ticket price is RS. 200

50 000 000 / 200 = 250 000

means that 250000 people have watched the movie in a day ... let's now say that each theatre has a capacity of 1000 seat :

250 000 / 1000 = 250 ... makes 250 shows a day
each theatre shows 4 times the movie per day :

250 / 4 = 62.5

at least 62, 1000 seats theatres have declared house full for 2 days with 4 shows per day and with ticket rates of about RS. 200 !!!! weird :?

Are the movies that did not sustain worthy of becoming hits? or would it have done a far better job at BO with some other heroes? The bad films are destained to bomb. Because of his star value, the films managed to have great openings. If done by others, the opening would be a non-existence. How did Kathal kOttai, Vaali, Citizen, Villan, Dheena, Varaalaaru etc become box office success? They only managed openings? As far as I know, Varalaaru ran around 100 days and gross was more than of 200-days films
jana, anjaneya, aalwar, ji range from average to very bad. Because he continually acted in the bad ones, some people formed this funny opinion 'only opening and no sustainment'. Varalaaru shattered the short-lived myth.

After seeing the first half of Varalaaru, I thought it's gonna flop. But the second half eased my tentions and I started to have confidence on the film.
I watched FDFS of Kireedom here. I was satisfied with the first half, but was hugely dissapointed with second-half. I expected a lot. I even betted with one hardcore Thala fan, Kireedom is gonna bomb. But it didn't. It was far better compared to his recent films. BTW, You've asked this questions many times and I replied you with the same points every time.

Varalaaru opened with 300 prints with 5 to 6 shows on the first 2 days. The average theater occupancy was 110% (thanks to standees and extra chairs). Now pls do the same calculation with an average theater size of just 600 and with the average ticket fare of just Rs.50.

This itself contributes to more than 10 crores.

If you consider that the 300 prints being shared by more than 300 theaters and a ticket price of 100 or 200 (minimun ticket fare during the opening weekend was Rs.100 in any theater) then the actual figures wud be extra ordinary.

Thats the power of THALA.

Billa is coming to break this record and create an unprecedented one.

My question on Thala movies:

Y Thala movies are not able to sustain the so called great openings given by his fans...
is there anything to do with family audience ..

for eg: kreedom may be a hit (?) but it has been replaced by some other new movies ... in half the no of theaters it released (at least in my city ... coimbatore 4 -> 1 1/2) within 1 month..

is Ajith just the king of opening (alone)

Now i saw today's Dailythanthi (kovai edition)..... no ad for kreedom.... it means it has been replaced in all the theaters .... latest by Rush hour

I cant agree with some people saying the likes of Rajni and Kamal are the best action heroes.. of course its their own opionion and i respect it..
especially Kamal who always tries something interesting in fight seqeunces.. (Bench fight in TTT, silambattam in DM and umbrella fight in AS)
but for me they are full blown entertainers.. who has given us 5 Star comedy classic? Kamal.. who has given us the best tamil movie ever? Kamal..who has given us the biggest hit ever.. Rajni..
So, they are on their own level.. when we talk about Kamal and Rajni, first thing pops to mind is their acting (Kamal) Style (Rajni)

My personal opinion is that Ajith, Maddy do well in action, but they have really innocent faces. For example, in Attagasam, during the action scenes, Ajith's face just didn't ooze the anger and violence, but seemed soft. Same with Maddy in films like Rendu. It's not that they're bad at action, but these two are definitely more apt for romance.

Vikram, Vijay, and Surya, although not great, definitely personify anger and action in respective films like Dhool, Ghilli, and Aaru. They also have more rugged appearances, which adds to the effect.

Rajini and Kamal are great, no doubt, especially since they've had so much practice with the wide variety of action roles they've done over the years. I love Rajini in Thalapathy.

But similar to Raghu and others, my vote goes to ACTION KING Arjun! He is the BEST at action, IMO and he should be on the list. :(

On Kamal-is very skilled in karatee, silambam and all sorts of fights and always tries to make his fights different, entertaining and more interesting. rest is left for Kamal devotees. When you talk of 'risk', Kamal's name will strike you in no time.

It's definitely Ajith in the present generation. He lived as a tough rowdy guy in Amarkalam. From the intro to the climax, He was excellent in every action scenes. He's probably the best in giving the right expressions for such scenes. In Dheena, take that shutter scene fight. No words can do justice to the expressions he's shown. The intro fight in the flashback scenes. Check out his Vaali for facial expressions, where the villan Ajith beats up a hang for molestation.

I think somebody mentioned that he looked soft in Attagasam :rotfl: .. Well.. he was supposed to be very innocent, soft and a bit allergic to fights. The dada Ajith, from the Thala pola varuma song, never looked soft or romantic. He's an actor(!!!) and he differentiated both roles to perfection.

Regarding taking risks. The type of risks he takes is normally a big ask for many many actors. Despite having undergone 14 operations, he's done stunts without dope. For such people, even jumping and running should be risky. No director failed to lavish praise on his daring stunts in interviews. Risk is synonymous to Ajith.

Maddy and Dhanush are noteworthy Maddy's fights may not be commendable but he has a knack for showing expressions of anger..eg Thambi, Jay Jay.
Dhanush was suprisingly good in Kathal Kondein.. some of the scenes were reminiscent of gap10.
gap10 is very under-rated in this department. Just ask all the Paki terr..
