Poo poothathu is a great song. But kamal fails to become a super hit. He did mistake with MX audio release. Virumandi was a great hit before movie release. But MX audio is not a hit even after film release.

Audio cassete/cd distribution of MX was a great insult. He started a audio company to release the MX cassete. But in my native place Srivilliputtur and in Rajapalayam, I could not get the audio cassete/cd even after film release. He had sold 1.75 lakhs cassete to VCAN, a MLM company. I think, VCAN did a agreement with Kamal in which some sentence may be like "Audio cassete/cd do not sell for some periods". This is a greate mistake. Thus, film songs to be a super hit is not even a small hit. I think, this may be a reason MX film's below average business.

I just realized how little of IR's recent film music I've been listening. Still stuck on old songs and his non-film albums.

some recent songs I like (other than those already mentioned):
(in no particular order)
Piraye - pithamagan
Saranam Bhava - Pithamagan
Aadum Padham Thozha - Ponmegalai
Uppu title theme (was uppu after 2000?)
Kaatril varum geethame - Oru naal oru kanavu
Kaattu vazhi kaalnadaiya - Adhu oru kanaa kaalam

solla marandha kathai - solla marandha kathai

these 2 songs reminded me of old IR with very crisp tunes......and it was a welcome relief from manmadha rasa and althotta bhubathi songs of that time......

Vaanaville , especially Ilayaan's version is an absolute stunner!

My liking list is almost same as thumburu's. Plus RR's addendum to it. Plus "appadi paakradhunna vEnaam" from ivaN.

Especially I am delighted to see "andha kaandamaNi" song in the list. In this forum, almost none have expressed their liking to this song when virumaandi songs were discussed. I like that song more than Onna vida song :)

I feel that voices of Saadhana Sargam(?) and IR have not lived upto the level of the song "vaanavillE vaanavillE". Chitra were art thee?

Sadhana Sargam definitely didn't live up to the level of the song, but Ilyaan certainly did, IMO

I dont think much of IR's output after 1995. A handful of noteworthy songs at the most. Here are a few I liked in the last 5 years:

1. semi-classicals from Ivan and Ponmegalai
2. Unnai thedi from Konji Pesalam
3. ILangaatru veesudhe (after few listens)
4. Kaatril varum geethame
5. Kaattu vazhi kaalnadaiya
6. sandiyare sandiyare
7. Niram pirithu(if Time came after 2000)
8. nee paartha and isaiyil from Hey Ram
9. edhilum ingu, nirpadhuve from Bharathi

Vaanaville, IMO is a very ordinary tune. Someone even compared it with Deva's Karuppu Nila for the way the songs start. IR has had better songs in the same scale.

Its only for the first two words or they way the songs start. The tunes are comparable in quality though. Orchestration might be the only saving grace in Vaanaville

alwarpet_andavan, where can I download Ilayaan's mp3 songs? This is the movie in which the guy who imitates Sathyaraj acts...right? Its supposed to have some good songs by IR!

Was just listening to Vaanaville song (Ramana). The harmonium kind of synthesized sound in the first interlude (after she sings "la..la...la..") is pretty neat. Nice orchestration. Just listening to "Nee thoongum nerathil". A melting tune and very apt interludes (humming in the first interlude is too good) and orchestration. Amazing song that is.

alwarpet_andavan, for a moment I forgot that the new name "Ilayaan" is nothing but IR :). BTW, what is the full form of Ilayaan? Read in some thread...but I forgot. I somehow dont like the name "Ilayaan"...maybe because the way it pronounces/sounds. Its my opinion. Was there a IR version of Vaanaville song?

Is mp3 songs of the movie Ilayavan available anywhere (coolgoose??) on the net? I heard a couple of songs were good in this movie.

thanks

The Hindu review says this about the music of "Ilayavan":

http://www.hindu.com/2000/09/29/stories/09290225.htm

"....All the five songs tuned by Ilaiyaraja are mellifluous. The best is `Vattanilaeva' written by Mu. Metha and sung by S. P. Balasubramaniam and Swarnalatha. `En Jeevanae' written by Pulamaipithan and sung by S. P. Balasubramaniam is also a captivating number. Unnikrishnan and Chitra have sung the song `En Idayam Muzhuvathum' written by Arivumathi which has beautiful rhythm. Good lyrics by Pazhani Bharathi for the song `Chinukku chinkkunnu' sung by Mano will linger long in the minds of the audience. `Nilavin Amuthu' a duet by Unnikrishnan and Bhavatharini, which is written by Pazhani Bharathi, is also a good one...."

thanks

Many ARR fans like IR songs and likewise many IR fans like ARR songs. Its just some stupid ppl who insult one or the other and start an un-necessary ARR-IR war. I know Arjuna, Dinesh, alias, MADDY and few other ARR fans like IR fans and gave encouraging feedback for TIS and many other IR songs. Lot of these folks like songs from ONOK / AOKK. Likewise, I am sure many of IR fans like Aa Aah / Rising. If we are just a bit open, then we will have a healty talk rather than bashing each other.

Nice recollections guys.. I was browsing this thread just to get a list of songs that I might have missed..

Vijayr, Comparing VanaVille song to a Deva number. Hmmm Very Interesting !! sometimes your observations just throw me off.. NOM

In my opinion, that's the best Dharmavathy scale i have heard since the Vikram song. and i like the interludes a lot .. The song is great ( inspite of SS's voice ). I agree that KSC or even Shreya would have done a better job in terms of the emotions.. but can't blame a non-tamil singer for that..it's IR who picked the singer.

Cheers

Vana Ville - IR version negates any comments one makes about the choice of singers to discredit it. People throw comments as they please. But the emotions the song evoke, even if one isn't aware of the context in the movie, is to be experienced. I know that as long he is alive he can come up with these and it is worth the wait.
