I was watching "Sangamam"n Vijay TV yesterday, anchored by singer Mathangi, featuring SPB.
On "Ilaiya Nila", he said its a pure classical guitar based song. The guitar pieces were so intricate that the guitarist couldn't just get it right and Ilaiyaan would just play out the piece and say "avalo dhaane ya...?".

Dear Friends,

Today I have uploaded the last set of Maestro Andrum Indrum Endrum Series.

Unfortunately, the songs Unnai Vida (Virumandi) & O Priya Priya (Idhyathai Thirudathe) could not be recorded due to power failure at that time (Heavy rains in Chennai in Oct/Nov).

Also, there was Audio problem in Three Note Song (last one minute), Masatra Sodhi (full song, very unfortunate) and Ada Veetuku (first one minute). I could not correct it, since the problem was on the video tape itself.

IR was the only male singer throughout the show.

manjari, swarnalatha, sadhna sargam, bhavatharini, sujaya (Yuvan's wife.. for nela adhu song 'ajum ajum' bit) were the female singers.

show started at 7pm, but IR came to stage at 725pm with some amazing fireworks.

show was cut short abruptly by police at 11pm since it almost exceeded permissible time limit due to political and other usual restrictions.

more, later..!!!

There seems to be always something to bring up from this concert:-)

Initially, I hadn't paid much attention to the performance of Thumbi Vaa(IR singing). Shreya was alright, orchestration was great, but common music fan that I am, I didn't think beyond that. Then while surfing, came to know just how much malayalees like this song.

I was going through some malayalam songs when I found Thumbi Vaa from Olangal, and surprise surprise, it credited Chithra as the singer:-) So I had to listen to it! Loved it. But I was baffled, b/c it's a Balumahendra film and some said SJ had sung the song. I am not sure if another movie was released using the same song and title. I searched and found SJ's version on raaga. That's also good. For all those that have heard SJ's version, here's Chithra's:

I watched the One Man Show DVD IMHO it is the worst show I have ever seen. Even amateurs would have done a better job in signing. IR messed up most of his songs and also SPB, Jeyachandran, Yesudas etc songs too. It looked as if there was no rehearsel done before the show whatsoever. The instrumentalist did a great job even though a botched performance by IR. For every botched song he was excusing himself by saying "I know u (fans) will forgive me for that". This show portrayed what a egocentric individual raja is.

I think, expectations also were really high because of Jayatv concert. Most people went to the last without expectations, becaue IR hadn't done a show in more than 10 years in Chennai, and came out satisfied.

Today i watched a programme called "Iruvar" in Vijay TV particapted by SPB, Malasia Vasudevan, Chithra, Saindavi and Madu Balakrishnan. It was simply superb and it was better than IR's one man show.

Super selection of songs
Well taken rehearsal
Nice archestration
Good audio system

And they played 100% IR songs :D

What I liked the most in the "Iruvar" programme was the "dedication" to each other part wheRE SPB sang "aasai 100 vagai" song as dedication to MV, Chitra sang "Nilaave vaa" (!!!!) of SPB's and MV sang "mandram vandha thendralukku" song for SPB. Chitra's tiny improvisation in "Nilaave vaa" is much better than SPB's normal overdoing and spoiling effort. He did that to his most popular "iLaiya nila" , this time too. It is saddening to note that MV has lost his rugged voice[ due to ageing perhaps!!!]. My dream to hear my most favourite "aasai 100 vagai" in SPB's flamboyant voice was fulfilled :). It was also nice to hear Chitra sing "kannan vandhu paadugiraan" and "Sendhurapoove". SPB did a pleasing work of "nee partha paarvaikkoru nandri" ("Hey Ram").Sandhavi no doubt has a sweet voice, but lacks expressions in songs like "mudhal mudhalaga kadhal duet", "Germaniyin sendhen malare" . She has miles to go before she could be clubbed alongside legends like SJ, CHitra etc. Even her "partha gyabagam illaiyo" lacked energy. MadhuBalakrishnan sang most of MV's songs like "Kodai kaala kaatre" etc. The orchestration was good. Special mention to those who played the trumphets exactly like the recorded version.

[tscii:c5b470c580]Yesterday, I saw Sangamam programme in which Gangai Amaran interviewed. A great show by Vijay TV with singer Mathangi, this time is a special for IR fans. GA told about IR larger than about himself. There was new and old informations.

He told that he has penned lyrics for saranam part for song "Intha minminikku kannil oru". Ofcourse, Kannadasan wrote the entire song including saranam, pallavi. But IR wanted to change the saranam and due to IR's wish GA changed the saranam by his lines. GA added that, "even Kannandasan did not know about the changes, he was too busy at that time no need time to know the changes or what he wrote". It is a shocking news.

However the programme will continue next Sunday. Don’t miss it :D

I hated the entire program. Everybody praised MR as if he is the tamil savor and he is a god etc. I didnt expect IR to do the same. May be I dont know enough about what MK did for TFM!!! By hatered towards SunTV was growing everyday, but this is it. Now I switched to Vijay TV!!!!

The best part is Vadivelu comedy and the reaction on Rajini watching Vadivelu performing. Rajni looked so funny but on the other hand, here is a man, who can come down to a common man level and enjoyed a stage show! Vadivelu speach also was great and definitely had impact on MK.

buggle
11th October 2006, 12:05 AM
You are correct njv. Lately SUN TV is a pain in the b***, esp after MK took over the CM position.
I did watch the show, i guess IR showed up for that function just because it was MK who conferred the title 'Isaignani' for IR.

How is vijay tv working for u? you got a separate dish with DIRECTV for that? i know you are in NJ, so they telecast programmes just like SUN( i mean the 12 hour delayed/recorded programmes)

kiru
11th October 2006, 07:06 AM
I also moved to Vijay TV recently. Got sick of Sun's hero-worshipping MK/DMK and very many re-broadcasts of the same sapth swarangal.
Vijay TV content is better, but their telecast is not of good video quality. Especially with movies and it is very annoying on a big TV. I also find the repeated commercials of the shows very annoying. There is no news as well. But since there is more quality music/music programmes I am happy. With DirectTV we also get more kids' channels (like Boom, NOGIN).

Jaya TV's coverage of "Andrum endrum maestro" programme was leagues ahead the sloppy, "eno thaano" Kalaignar TV's "Raja Raja thaan". I felt disappointed by the timing, coverage, publicity given to an extremely rare event like this.
About the programme, flautist Napolean deserves full praise for his impeccable rendition in many songs, esp in the "Azhagi" song "paatu cholli" , his frontal flute passage was spell binding. Chitra , just about effectively replaced SJ in many of her duets with SPB. Her "endhu paranjaalum" solo melody from "achuvinte amma" melted many hearts for sure. SPB cut short his usual "over the top" improvisations[ IR's looming figure around?]
Khush and Jeyaram could have done better.
IR and his family cannot sing for nuts . So why are they indulging in this cruelty time and again?
IR composed around 30 tunes before his first tune "Andhi mazhai" was selected, for "Raja paarvai". Raja also admitted to have used the remaining tunes. Iam left wondering what those songs could be.

Good, but still will be behind his programme for Jaya TV.

* Same songs were repeated making viewers wonder at times whether they are seeing the same programme again.

* Rehearsal could have been surely better. Lot of misses and problems in sync.

* Acoustics and mikes. Many violin and guitar pieces were almost unaudible. Why did they try "Rakkamma" on stage

But one thing was made clear. Raja's association with Malayalam land was brought forth in a way as never before.

So our Tamil people who might have been thinking that Raja has retired, would have now come to know that he has been capturing Mallu people hearts silently all these years

Saw "Idea Star Singer" in Asianet. They have a separate round for "IR hits" now !

Aug 15 2013 - If you have not seen today's DD where they telecast musical discussion with Raja, TVG, mridhangam player Arun Prakash [ I vaguely remember a couple of his posts in TFMPage during ULiyin Oasai" times. But Iam not too sure if they are the same ], and the ever present Mano , you have missed a fantabulous session with Raja big time. Hurry up and grab the youtube links of the DD programme from hyper[linked]active youthu like SKV and get saaba vimOchanam.

Being a DD programme and having a carnatic music doyen and legend like TVG who is Raja's Guru, the session seemed to revolve around classical raagas used by Raja. I could watch only from the middle, Hamsadhwani in "Mayile mayile". I think there was some recap about the composition of the kannada evergreen "jotheyalli" before that. Then Raja recalled how he got motivated by TVG constantly humming a ThyagarAja kruthi in Bilahari and came up with the classic in Raja's own stamp, "koondhalilE mEgam vandhu". Raja was also showering his appreciation on KaNNadAsan who could on the spot come up with the poetic lines that followed the long, short phrases and the tumbling fall like flow in the pallavi tune. This was the first of the last 3 songs penned by him. Raja was at home and ease with musicians and the session was music focussed. Compare this with the apparent discomfort with sycophant kodambAkkam gumbal and gnyAna shoonya media/press who conduct interview session with him.

Any body attending the Garland TX event next Saturday. I couldn't find any publicity or event management video online. Also whether the San Jose event is happening currently . I don't have much friends in the west coast Bay area and so didn't hear much about the event or whether the Maestro arrived with his battalion.

was planning to book the tickets for garland event and Alpharetta GA event. Booking thru sulekha /ticket-hungama is it a good option? I haven't tried previously.

any advice from hubbers.

I am seeing everyone is in quiet mode past few weeks.

Hope we have a gala event and successful one across all the centers

Stumbled upon the BATA official site (Bay area telugu association) and got to see the pictures of Greet N Dine for a small crowd with IR and KSC.
Man ! what a pleasant atmosphere and Raja at his best in terms of smiles and happy mood.
I get a feeling Raja belongs to Tollywood (Industry). The kind of reverence people are seen exhibiting and the whole hearted greetings and pleasantries being exchanged it is surreal. some how TFM (Tamil) is showing a bygone attitude towards this genius of a rare kind. Mollywood and Tollywood hail him as supreme and all the young and upcoming musicians and MDs in these two Industries have just surrendered to his prowess.

well, looking forward to seeing him at the dallas and few other venues and will try and attend the remaining ones as they suit my schedules as well.

buggle- will try and catch up amongst the huge crowd.

The Ilaiyaraaja interview: 'Why should filmmakers know about music creation?'

By Srinivasa Ramanujam

Ilaiyaraaja, who turns 75 tomorrow, gets chatting on his early years as a composer and how he adapted to the film music of that time.
