Hi Venky,

Nice videos.

When I saw the song from Manasinakkare, I was reminded of my recent trip to Munnar. We went to the Kundale dam near Munnar and there was no crowd since that day was 'Munnar Bandh'. As we were standing there, amidst the greenery on one side and water on the other side, this same song, "Mellaiyonnu" started playing on someone's radio. The whole effect was fantastic. Great calm of that place combined with this soothing song. When I saw the song picturisation now, I was surprised that the song is picturised in a very similar place !!

I dont know why I am unable to view/listen to this video. Any other alternative link.

Pt. Rajan & Sajan Mishra are very famous Hindustani musicians, considered to be icons in Khayal form of Hindustani Music. They belong to Banaras gharana.

I am realy curious about Maestro's collaboration with them. But disappointed that the song is not available in cds. Is it so? If so, how can we get this song?

This is only a promotional material with the additional CD Hence it needs to be promoted

Mandir Sabari (http://www.esnips.com/doc/ebd4abbe-173d-46e9-b448-422a1dcc329d/MGM09-Mandir-Sabari) - Beautiful tune and rendition it definitely gives us a blissful feel in the begining and moves towards Ecstacy during the crescendo, making us get immersed into the 'Bakthi' Feel. A must listen for all Believers and Rationalists like me :| ( Nalla irukku Just like when I listen to 'Polla Vinayen'. This song also transcends us into a different plane)
This should be a new and one of the kind song since there may not be any 'Bhajans' on 'Iyyappa'
Enjoy Listening :)

While Discussing with Suresh we landed upon the album 'Maayabaazar'. It was surprsing he hasnt listened to the album, hence it is here (http://www.mediafire.com/?k24vmbwyzcz) now :)
It was a revelation for me too listening to it after a long time. Stunning Album with the Melodious 'Thumthanathum' & 'Adadaa', Rocking 'Muthu Muthu'...Amazing Orchestration & Arrangements...Listening to 1st interlude is pure entertainment with the violins and the vocals going into uncharted territories, 'Oru Oorilee' is a charming story and Iam happy to have found another story-song for my son :) The situational based fun filled 'Birthday Party' and Ofcourse peaking the album is 'naan Poranthu' with only vocal harmonies forming the musical structure of the song.

Naan Porandhu is a brilliant composition. I remember i was once listening to a song from ARR's 'thiruda thiruda', which had no instruments but only vocals and i wondered if IR ever tried the same. And later, i came across this Naan Porandhu.

(no intention to drag ARR into this or to compare, just that i had thought listening to that song and later found this song. That is all it is and that is all it needs to be too.)

I was just thinking yesterday of listing out the erotic/soft romantic songs of Raaja...the two songs that came to my immedietly were 'Enulle Enulle' from Valli and 'etho mogam' from Kozhi koovuthu. Thanks for reminding this song. Every instrument oozes sexuality perfect in harmony with the inner longing and desire of a female.

The reason I wanted to 'study' such songs stemmed out of the discussions we were having regarding rootedness in some other thread. this single genre will show the mastery of IR in understanding the female body in her own language within the cultural context which she resides and transforming it into music. Listening to a city girl singing 'Naane Naana', 'enthan kannil ezhulagangal', 'mounamaana neram' 'maalaiyil yaaro' and an educated village girl singing 'Enulle Enulle', 'Enullil Engo', 'Ponvaanam paneer thoovuthu', 'manasu mayangum' and an uneducated village girl singing 'orakka kathuthu kozhi' and a drama artist singing 'Sivarathri'.....Perfect research material :notworthy:

The feeling is same but the situational and cultural context plays a definitive role in expressing it musically or otherwise.

The original film did not have name. I am not sure if it was RGV also. There was a film started by Singeetham with Chiranjeevi & Tabu but it got shelved (i think it was titled Bhooloka Veerudu). Ofcourse, RGV also discussed (not started) a film with Chiranjeevi but it didnt materialize. And this Vinaalani Undhi album has songs from various shelved films. So no two songs are by same composer. I think the audio company might have had rights to the audios of those films, which got shelved and it later released all singles woven into one album. The title 'Vinaalani Undhi' was also given to the album just for the heck of it and it was not the original name of any of the films whose songs are put into this album. They didnt credit the album, but i think composers include Ilaiyaraaja, Keeravani etc. And my guess is that the ilaiyaraaja song could have been from the shelved Singeetham film.

And that reminds me, few years ago (2000-2001), a telugu director Kodi Ramakrishna shot a film, a fantasy film (like Jaganmohini) with Balakrishna. Ilaiyaraaja completed the score and i have even seen a photograph of ilaiyaraaja's composing session with veteran singer 'Bhanumathi' for this film.the film didnt get complete(shot 70% i think), because Balakrishna superstitiously felt that such them doesnt work for his image in this age(he got into faction films) and producers also lost confidence that audience might not appreciate a fantasy subject. But the score must be lying somewhere.. finished score that too.

kavarimAn is IR's music, isn't it? 'pooppOlE un punnagaiyil' used to be my most fav song during that time period.

It seems there's a Bharathiyar song sung by Varalakshmi in this raaga.

@app Engine - need to hear it to see if it was actually tuned by IR - For bharathiyar songs, most of them have the raaga to be used specified (though IR deviated from the set raagas in his songs). Need to check if it was an actual bhairavi or a modification.
That apart - are you by any chance in a data mining project?

I don't think the writer literally meant it. My take is that he was saying that Raja has used a wide variety of ragas and talas and in that he is correct.

no no - I am not disputing the writer - I agree with him completely, just wanted to know in the context if anyone mined out a bhairavi by IR. A_E has done it and I am pretty happy.

As I have not heard that "kavarimaaN" song, I cannot comment. But Raja normally retunes Bharathiar songs ,example being 2 different tunes for "nalladhor veenai seidhe" . Bhairavi, Thodi etc are called "gana" ragas and as they are quite difficult to play around, normally our film MDs avoid them and esp Bhairavi" is close to Mukhari which is considered as an "oppaari" raga :))
And Rahman's "enna seiya pogiraai", except for that tiny flute bit in the interlude is just not Bhairavi

I would be happy to know what you feel about this book. Also, if someone could throw more light on the background of the authors of the book, it would be great.

It says our Maestro's name entered the Guinness Book of World Records for the maximum number of movie scores. Is it true? Do any of us have information about this?

'solla vallAyO' is here :

Those who are raga-literate, please confirm if this is bhairavi.

If this is true, the "classical Ilayaraja" series that claims that IR has never done a bhairavi song is incorrect. (I just saw a portion of that article which contains another error - of attributing the KJY bhairavi song 'thiruppARkadalil paLLi koNdAyE' to MSV. I think it was by Dhakshinamoorthy for the film Swami Ayyappan)

app_end and Jai,

The song from 'Kavariman' does not contain any Bhairavi!! As thumburu rightly mentioned, Bhairavi is a raga which doesn't yield itself easily to film music. The well known modern Bhairavis from film music would be 'Tiruparkadalil' from Swamy Ayyappa. Music by Devarajan. (Not MSV or Dakshinamoorthy Swamy). The other well known Bhairavi appears at the fag end of the song 'Adisaya Ragam Ananda Ragam'. The song from the Malayalam film, Chandrakantam, 'Hridaya Vahini' has shades of Bhairavi. As with the 'Adisaya Ragam' song, this too was composed by MSV. The Malayalam song is infact sung by MSV.

As thumburu had pointed out, expect for a brief flute piece that appears in an interlude, 'enna seyya pogirai' has no connection to Bhairavi.

Today I bought a Kannada CD which had the music from the movies 'Chandanada Kombe', 'Bayaludari' and 'Hombilsilu'. Honestly I know nothing about these movies. It so happened that in the CD credits, two instrumental songs were mentioned and the credit said that the orchestration is by 'Pavalar Bros'. This is what prompted me to buy the CD. (I am sure all of us know who the Pavalar Bros are :)

Now, the two instrumental versions are not songs tuned by Pavalar Bros but songs of another MD (from the Net I found out it was Rajan Nagendra.) The 'Yaro Kurudu' has the flute playing for a lot of time with some harmonium / accordian accompaniment. The other song 'aakasa' has the harmonium playing most of the song. We all know Raja used to play the harmonium. So is it Raja who is playing the harmonium here?

You can download and listen to these two pieces here:

http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=8e33cb20ac50d571d6baebe61b361f7cb065535c c1bc00064ca8d2a77d7aad89

BTW, I was surprised that the credits were given to Pavalar Bros because I couldn't find the names of the MDs for any of the three films that the CD had !!!

IR needs that kind of emotionally packed scene or at least a decent script to give something phenomenal

the Pazhassi Raja bgms (especially the deliberate discordant sound from the wind instrument in the title score, the various themes/motifs) and the Kannukkulle bgms (its been a long time since i heard such heavy strings usage in IR's bgms) just show that if ppl are not using IR, then they are the losers and not IR!

I like fans like us here at least (mothama setha oru lorry kooda fullagathunnu ninaikiren :D ) buy original CD's of Raaja's albums. But i do understand sometime it becomes next to impossible thing to get the CD's of 70's, 80's.

I am trying to collect original CD's or LP's as much as possible. Recently i was surprised to find of of his rare album , the movie is "Enakkaga kaathiru". I love all the songs... absolutely fantastic. I know MP3 versions are available in the net but very poor quality. If any of you need the songs from the album do mail me.

The uploader(artist) is a musician based in New York and he improvised the Mouna Raagam theme into a song (as a tribute to Ilaiyaraaja and Maniratnam). He did quite a good job. i wouldnt say he strictly stuck to IR school of thought alone, but he took the theme and did his own thing, quite well. Pretty impressive.

Check out Violin Vicky's latest post of Raja - Janaki combination in Malaylam.

http://raagadevan.blogspot.com/

Great post there!

I knew it was IR for #8,9 & 10 as they came during my Palakkad tenure. Actually 'yamunE ninnude' was a rage when I started there in Jan'86 with being played everywhere. I didn't know it was IR initially but instantly liked it (was thrilled to learn that it was our man's in BM / Mammootty's yAthra). pappayude swantham appoos was a Fazil / Mammootty / IR combo with songs written about in every Malayalam magazine (Manorama even printed an exclusive IR article which started with the 'Olaththumbaththu' lines).

OTOH, about others - excluding the ones that had equivalent TFM versions, I didn't know those were IR's though I've heard them here and there. Must have been hits when they arrived. Whether it was the customers' taste (i.e.directors) or IR's motivation to be competitive, his MFM had a superior melodic content always :-)

Well said app_eng. Exactly my thoughts when I had written about Raja's Malayalam film songs in my blog: http://sureshs65music.blogspot.com/2008/02/crossing-boundaries-down-south-2.html

I am giving the relevant portion here. This is what I wrote, "While Illayaraja has done some great work in Kannada and Telugu, he seems to have given, as Julie Andrews would have said,"better than his best" for Malayalam. Traditionally, Malayalam Film music is supposed to be biased on the side of melody. Added to it Illayaraja had to match up to the glorious music of people like Baburaj, Salil Choudhary, Devarajan and his own guru, V.Dakshinamurthy. I guess nothing spurs a genius more than a challenge and Illayarja responded by creating magic in Malayalam movies."

there is another absolutely mind-blowing track in SATHYA (kamal, amala) that never made it to the screen - "ingeyum angeyum" - which has all the trademark unorthodox tala structures, twists and turns - special components include a piano motif and a stunning second interlude - in terms of evolution of motifs within a composition, that is under 5 minutes long, this piece is matchless in creativity!

somehow IMHO, IR always reserves such completely unorthodox styled scores for Kamal!

I added the following comment there...

Can we term it as a Thaalamaalika ala Raaga maalika. Also it sounds to me a marriage of diverse rhythmic schools - fusion at the level of rhythm - not just at harmony alone. the picturisation that we got to see finally had that element of jerk, jolt , then harmonious joining of a family doing a ring around the rosie with the centre piece being couple holding hands and going around and finally stumbling and jerking their way into reality. I find the song, the melody and rhythm shifts and beat cycle joinings reflecting the context aptly. Truly the hall marks of a genius on his day at the office.. and you too have proven your diligence with this wonderful post .. yet again....

It is my assumption that Kamal must have shelved the picturisation of this song keeping in mind the length of the film, or, perhaps the commercial appeal for the same, given that the album already had a whopping number 'valai osai' the like of which had not been composed earlier and has not been bettered by the master himself!

if this is the case with someone like Kamal who despite his daring to venture into unchartered areas still had to shelve such an unorthodox composition, it is mind-boggling when I think of how many countless such musical ideas/themes IR must have sacrificed for lesser more stereotyped directors insisting on formulaic songs/compositions from IR, when IR must have had better ideas!

I think Kamal has the musical sense to describe the situation in a way that makes sense to Raaja. Ofcourse - If Kamal simply stops saying hero heroine 'seeing' song or something like that, Raaja would have still have given him a gem, but Kamal sells his visualization idea to Raaja like a script writer pitcher his idea to a star actor. I just wonder what he must have explained the 'Unnai naanariven' for Guna - the whole mise en scene (thanks to zero) of it all for Raja to come up with that collage of andhra folk, to hindustani to carnatic tour of the whole area. Now that is an awesome experiment in 'sound scaping' - not what we hear in recent albums thanks to digital technology.

The lead guitar bit - portions of it was used (or imporvised upon) in Nothing But Wind.
the waltz in the first interlude was again improvised and used in 'Vetri vizha' Vaanamenna keezhirukku - whose rhythms were also a composite pattern incidentally. The symphonic(with due apologies to Madhan) twirls in the ludes - I hope would have been used in a movie and as usual we all would have missed it.

A very nice reason to revisit Satya and find out what is the relevant situation.

"satya" and "agni natchatiram" were both released Tamil new years day, 1988! between the two, AN was a chartbuster, while in the BGM dept, 'satya' was heads and shoulders over AN - the use of the percussion based on the sound of the (chennai suburuban) rail running on tracks had an amazing impact!

when kamal tries to persuade amala who is inside her house and kamal outside, a brilliant violin piece and then again, when they both reconcile on the beach, a romantic smooth jazz piece!

all this from memory, its been more than a decade since I last saw 'sathya' !

I wrote earlier in the mysteriously disappeared thread "Appreciating decent picturisation of good songs" about my horrible experience.

We bachelors were watching olium oLiyum at Palakkad, thanks to the newly opened "Kodaikkanal antenna" and the fabulous vaLaiOsai made us rush to the theater without delay.

Kamal's team tortured us in this movie. I would recommend people to watch that song on youtube and that's about it :-)

Are you referring to Kamal-K Viswanath's telugu dubbed movie? It had music by Keeravani.

A nice article by Raj about the song from 'PonMegalai' , "aadum padam", based on Latangi and sung by Sudha Raghunathan. A nice song and a nice explanation of details relating to dancing in this blog.

One interesting observation for 'engengO sellum' in this blog post :

பாடலின் காட்சியில் 56 வயது யுவனும் 26 வயது யுவதியும் தோன்றுகிறார்கள்.Real stunner!

I was earlier thinking that this song should have been for Sridevi + lover who also acted in PKB. Sometime back, youtube proved otherwise - that Sivaji provided unintentional comedy on-screen for this gem of a song:-(

five nice songs (http://radiospathy.blogspot.com/2010/08/blog-post.html)

Wonderful BGM.
on the loop for the best part of this morning..

Goose flesh inducing music.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGWYaXI129E

watch out for the mellow variation of the theme when a small boy enters the scene. Subtlety and grandeur mixed in equal proportions - thy name is raaja.

BTW I did not find Raaja's speech in NBW (Nothing but wind - not non bailable warrant) function out of place or odd. Typical IR speech - the degradation of rasanais is there very much to see.

Saw the program called 'Hariyudan Naan' on Jaya TV today. Quite a few Raja songs sung today. This episode was Onam special and one beautiful girl sang 'Thumbi Vaa'. Sarath, who is one of the judges, remarked, "I don't think any song has been such a massive hit as this song in Kerala. Janaki has sung this wonderfully. You don't know whether you should follow the tune or the orchestration. Illayaraja is known as 'Isai Gnani'. I think he should be called 'Isai Raja Maha Gnani' " One guy sang 'pitchai pathiram' decently and was overcome by emotion and couldn't complete the song.

[tscii:249752a224]You learn something new every day!!! One of my classmates from Osmania Univ, a Telugu person, is a major Raja fan it seems and I didn't know that till around yesterday!!! Here is what he wrote about his experience with Raja's music:

"That reminds me of another incident in our college days. Actually I was crazy about Ilayaraja's music (once my friend took me to his recording in Chennai, I was simply thrilled). As there are not much Ilayaraja's songs in telugu at that time, I used to tune to tamil songs on radio; with great difficulty I used to catch some stations such as radio Ceylon. There is this Yesudas solo in tamil with Ilayaraja's music which I liked so much that I requested Natarajan and Kumaravelu to write in English and I practiced it for a day or two and I gave a live performance to my dearest audience Natarajan and Kumaravelu. It was in evening twilight, fading light falling through those large windows of hostel room, both my friends were sitting face to face with a study table in between them, little nervous and shakily I started and sang that beautiful song `Eeramana Rojavae, Ennai Paarthu Moodathae ……."

The impact that Raja made !!!![/tscii:249752a224]
