Technological advances have been best made to use in Tamil films. Generally, it is accepted that Tamil films are miles ahead at least in terms of technology, when compared with films of other languages. The trend of having group dancers accompanying the lead pair in overseas locations continued into 2005 and is expected to also remain so in 2006!

Kannum kannum nokia from Anniyan was shot from angles never seen in KLIA and Petronas Towers. Inside sources say that the water bed (with goldfish swimming it it) - shown for a mere 10 seconds on the screen, cost the producers RM25,000 - that is almost 3 lakhs!

On the extreme other end, Raa raa, which was shot entirely in a studio, but which was the highlight of the movie Chandramukhi, too captured the fascination of audience world wide.

Yet another kind of picturisation - depending entirely on computer graphics - was also popular. Lakhs was spend doing fancy stuff in the song Mayilirage from the movie Ah Aah - though many would have prefered any other hero, other than director SJ Surya.

Other competition in this category was the very stylish picturisation of Suttum vizhi sudare (Gajini) and the ultra sexy Theeppidikka (Arindhum Ariyaamalum).

So what captured our Hubbers imagination?

Best Lyricist

Millions throughout the world are linked together in this forum through their love for Tamil songs. What are songs if not sheer poetry. Tamil Filmdom has produced just not lyricists (paadalaasariyar) but amazing poets (kavignar) too.

When talking about lyrics, we cannot forget the first name that comes to our mind - Kannadhasan! He has set a standard so high that even today, lyricists are struggling to meet his standard - which is delivering thoughts in a ordinary layman manner.
In fact many songs written by Kannadasan have acquired literary status.

Even immortal works of poets such as Bharathiyar and Bharathidasan have been given life by our film maestros.

But old songs does not end with Kannadhasan. In fact, the very first lyricist for Tamil film was Madhurakavi Bhaskaradas. Many others have places in history including Pattukottai Kalyana Sundaram, Papanasam Sivan. Kalaignar Karunanidhi, Maruthakasi, Aalangudi Somu, Panju Arunasalam, Pulamai Pithan, Gangai Amaran, etc.

Even now, there is no lack of lyricists, the more popular being Vaali, Vairamuthu, Muthulingam, Mu Metha, Arivumathi, Pazhani Bharathi, Pa Vijay, Na Muthukumar, Thamarai, etc.

With so many lyricists and thousands of songs, who will be the Lyricist of the year?

Best Lyricist 2005!

Vaali !

with 40% of the votes...! "Devuda" sure has blessed him.. He beats his nearest rival "Naa. Muthukumar" who got 29% of votes.
It was a sad year for last year's winner Vairamuthu. He received only 16% votes.. !

Thanks, Scale! Keep following the results.. You missed the lucky draw, but you may be in for the hubber award !

Album of the Year

If you could only afford to buy one album in 2005, what would it have been? Could it be Chandramukhi - to listen to the telugu Raaraa and maybe the only album with two SP Bala songs?

Or could it be the sole ARR album of 2005 - Ah Aah, quenching the thirst of millions world-wide? Yuvan Shankar Raja gave a feast in Arindhum Ariyaamalum, produced by Malaysian deejay Geetha - Is that the album you want to hear, especially Thyagaraja Bhagavathar's rendition? :D

Or would it be the electronic Shankar-Harris Jayraj combo's Anniyan. Kanda Naal Mudhal or Ghajini?

RR

Album of the year 2005!

Arindhum Ariyamalum !

which got 24% of the votes...! It is actually an impressive performance as YSR had 3 nominations (that could have lead to possible vote split) whereas the ARR gang had only 1 album to vote for. Yet this album emerged a winner. The race was actually very close. "A A" beat "Ah Aah" by only one vote! Chandramukhi got the third spot with 15% votes.

Song of the Year

Of the hundreds of songs released in a year, which song will have the prestigious award as Song of the Year?

Nominations poured in for several songs, with most not even seeing the light of the day. What would qualify for the best song of the entire year? Would it be the lyrics, the tune, the orchestration, the singers or the picturisation?

It’s all these and more. The song also needs to become popular. Thus the battle were among a chosen few:

Ada ennaatha solvenungo (Sivakaasi)
Andankaakka (Anniyan)
Kaatril Varum Geethame (Oru naal oru Kanavu)
Mayilirage (Ah Aah)
Raa Raa (Chandramukhi)
Suttum Vizhi Sudare (Gajini)
Theeppidikka (Arindhum Ariyaamalum)

Mayilirage from Anbe Aaruyire (Ah Aah)

Mayilirage from Ah Aah (with a slender margin) grabbed 22% of Votes over Suttum Vizhi Sudare (Ghajini) with 20% of votes.. Raa Raa (Chandramukhi) and Kaatril Varum Geedhame each got 12% of the votes...

Best Female Singer

As far as 2005 is concerned, established singers such as S Janaki, Chitra and even Anuradha Sriram hardly sang enough songs to merit interest. Hindi singers Shreya Ghosal and Sadhana Sargam gained stronger foothold in Tamil film while Telugu singer Binny with her rendition of Raaraa in Chandramukhi, astounded Tamil audience. Many new voices who made impact with just their first song like Grace and Kalpana continued to grace Tamil cinema.

Not surprisingly, all singers nominated for this category sang melodious songs and I personally look forward to the day when dappangkuththu songs and malaysian-style songs will not be the main focus of Tamil cinema.

Besides Raaraa, our Song of the Year, Mayilirage, Suttum vizhi sudare, Saamikkitta, Oru vaarththai solla, and Kadavul thandha songs were the nominations for 2005. The big question, of course is who will win this coveted award.

And the best Female Singer is

Shreya Ghosal

for her sweet rendition of Saamikitte & other songs, with a comfortable 36% of votes to Binny krishnakumar's 18% (for Raa Raa). Madhusri (Mayilirage) with 15% came third.. Bombay Jayashree (Suttum vizhi sudare) and Sadhana Sargam (oru vaarthai sollu) came 4th with 10% of the votes each..

Best Male Singer

We are now at one of the remaining two highlights of this award results announcement. The best singer award for the year 2005!

Old timers like SP Bala, Shankar Mahadevan and Karthik continued to mersmerise us with their voice and rendition in 2005. Unfortunately one time popular Hariharan was not featured as often. TFM also saw the talents of relative newcomers like Madhu Balakrishnan and Sriram Parthasarathy, who sang the now popular Suttum vizhi sudare song in Ghajini. One notable newcomer in this field was Naresh Iyer. Though singing only one song in 2005 - Mayilirage - he managed to capture the attention of many. A known fact to many would be that this singer is only 16 years old and was a runner-up in a talent show judged by AR Rahman.

Generally, 2005 was a reasonable year in terms of singers with many melodious songs, which enabled them to prove their mantel. But that does not answer the question on which singer captured the attention of the majority of the Hubbers….

Best Male Singer 2005

Naresh Iyer !

who got 26% of the votes. This category was really one of the closest fought this year. Most of the singers including Shankar Mahadevan, Karthik,Madhu Balakrishnan continued to get almost equal number of votes. But it was the new voice Narash who stole everyone's heart with his soothing 'Mayilirage'. Madhu Balakrishnan gets the second spot with 18% votes.

Best MD

Five nominations were received for 2005:

1. AR Rahman (for just one movie in Ah Aah)
2. Haris Jeyaraj (Ghajini, Anniyan, etc)
3. Ilaiyaraja (for Oru Naal Oru Kanavu)
4. Vidhyasagar (Mainly Chandramukhi)
5. Yuvan Shankar Raja (Many, including the Album of the Year, Arindhum Ariyaamalum)

Notables missing were Bharathwaj, Deva, Srikanth Deva, Devi Sri Prasad, etc.

Right from the start it was clear that the fight was among ARR, VS and Yuvan.

Around the middle of the voting process, ARR went into the lead, Yuvan was in 2nd and Vidyasagar's position was precarious and was losing out.. A few days later Yuvan's votes also started building up... It was getting to be tough fight between ARR & Yuvan..

So who won finally? It was .....

Yuvan Shankar Raja !

who pips AR Rahman at the post with a 2 vote lead. YSR polled 32% votes and ARR 28% votes. It was a repeat win for YSR in Hub awards! (But he better watch out, his lead is slipping.) Vidyasagar makes a third place finish with 16% votes.

This was really surprising. Even I noticed it. Still a single album from the MAESTRO for an idiotic SJS is much better than what we have expected. I was wondering how great if these two songs Mayilirage & Maramkothiye were been picturised by SHANKAR. Aararai Kodi another a perfect intro song went unnoticed.

Mayilarage (song) & Naresh Iyer is a clear winner.

Congrats to all the winners

Hubber Award (TFM) 2005!

After going through the nominations.. unfortunately no one has got all 7 awards correctly. The maximum score anyone got was 6. This happens to be the best prediction. So, who came up with it? Not 1, not 2.. three hubbers have made it..! They are..

The three TFM "visionaries" of 2005 are dinesh2002, Scale and ansa400.. Good show, guys!

But the prize has to go only one and so a tie breaker applies. We have chosen the hubber who posted the predictions the earliest (and hence may have "influenced" others).

So the award goes to the earlybird...

dinesh2002

Congrats! You win a music CD of choice..! I'll contact you shortly for details.
