In the movie gauravam, there will be a quote:

"thanninilai thaazhaamaiyum thaazhnthadhenil (?) uyir vaazhaamaiyum maaNam enappadum"

I believe this is not a thirukuRaL! :)

Where does this come from :?:

Thank you in advance! :)

It is a classic definition of the word "Á¡Éõ" which can be found in most commentaries of the chapter entitled "Á¡Éõ" in ThirukkuRaL. It reflects the principle contained in a thirukkuRaL verse. The kuRaL is:

Á¢÷¿£ôÀ¢ý Å¡Æ¡ì ¸ÅâÁ¡ «ýÉ¡÷
¯Â¢÷¿£ôÀ÷ Á¡Éõ Åâý.

You should be able to find the given definition in most commentaries, either in the words you have quoted or in words to the same effect.

Dr Mu. Varatharaasanaar says: ¾ÁìÌ Â¡§¾Ûõ þÆ¢× §¿÷ó¾¡ø ¯Â¢÷ Å¡Æ¡¾(Ð) Á¡Éõ. Á¡Éõ «Æ¢Â §¿÷ó¾¡ø ¯Â¢¨Ã Å¢ðÎÅ¢ÎÅ÷.

Cross refer: Àâ§ÁÄƸ÷, ¸¡Ç¢í¸÷, Á½ì̼Å÷ ¯¨Ã¸û. These are old commentaries.

Actually it goes:

than nilai thaazhaamaiyum annilai thaazhthakkaal uyir vaazhaamaiyum maanam enappadum.

I think you are absolutely correct.

This must have come from the thiru kuRaL you have quoted! :smile2:

in German:

das Pferd - kuthirai
der Hengst - "aaN kuthirai"
die Stute - "peN kuthirai"
das Fohlen - "pillai kuthirai"

Sorry, my Tamil is like this. I can only describe these things this way. Sure, I learnt all these things but Mala please update me if you don't mind.

der Gaul - Horse (especially south german)

poetically
das Ross - steed
auf dem hohen Ross - on one's high horse

der Schimmel - white/gray horse

Is this enough for a while?

Hindi word for horse is close to the Tamil word.
