Um....tats nice Arthi but personally I dont believe tat rituals/customs nec. indicate sumone being pious....also these sumthing we can only see being followed physically in front of us, so we wudnt know how genuine tat person really is......

Good question!
My father married my mother only bcos he wanted to marry only a doctor, being one himself.....he was of the opinion tat if he married sumone of the same profession as he was in, they cud both spend good time together, discussing similar subjects/topics at home...so tat way he wudnt hav to bore his wife (or vice versa), unlike otherwise.... :roll:
& also being doctors, one cud help the other in times of dire need..........well, tat was true of course, my mum cud help my dad a lot during his last days when he was ill.....
As for me, well......I dont wna marry neone in too high a profession as I cudnt adjust my life to sumone like tat....plus I'm never goin2 be in one myself.....def. not too busy profession, as I've learnt from observing my parents!
I'd at one point of time wanted to marry a (school) teacher (& still do) as tats one of the few professions I respect.....:)

You can be both; religious and do good at the same time. They are found to be complimentary. Being religious don't mean going to temple all the time. I find it necessary to go (not necessarily frequently) and meditate with a group which is more effective than doing it alone.

The Gita clearly says, if one has to work and can't make it to places of meditation, the reason of work, is acceptible. If you are not working or can't make it to places of mediation/temples, you can listen to God's word; listening to bhajans is an acceptible compromise.

ok, you've gone off into a long digr. but, isn't teaching the same thing repeatedly year after year boring? i've never been a teacher before, not even part-time. but i have done and still do science workshops for kids and that's totally different cos it's only fun activities and interesting facts. not mundane teaching like a school teacher!

I agree its our rote & write education system tat has made this job mundane.....:(
Also the lack of motivation for this job bcos of factors like low pay etc....but wen I was teaching, I found it more fun to interact w/ differnt students from differnt backgrounds than keep in mind tat I'd be teaching the same thing again & again for each batch.....even at school we had many teachers who used to be lively & at times discuss many things other than the subjects they taught....so I feel its the interaction tat makes it go lively, as opposed to most office jobs & dont even talk abt customer service ones, wher almost the only interaction u hav comes in the form of complaints & frustrations.....:roll: added to tat, u hav to work for longer hours in most of these....!

When we talk of respectable profession I think we refer to those professions traditionally respected. What is a respectable profession these days? When it comes to medical, you find he doctors are failing to support the patients, as they should when legal issues arise. They do all they can to prevent having to go to court. They only care for the patient up to a certain point. The reports they provide on patients are often not truly reflective of the patients' records.

When it comes to the teaching profession, tell me about it. I have seen lecturers slopping together bits of notes just before the lecture, no effort to get new materials on current issues etc. and just give you straight from the book which you can read yourself in your own time :wink: . In many places it's a regurgitation of the same material. It's common in places where research is limited, common in countries developing at a slow rate if developing at all. Thus, the quality of teaching is poor and it takes no big brain, hard work and dedication to get through exams. The questions are likely to be the same year after year, only asked in a different way. Notes of pass students can be easly obtained and there you go, become what you want, no real sweat :evil: .

As a mater of fact, certain counties live off reputation and when examined closely, the reputation is far from present day realities in maintaining reputation. No changes to meet them.

We all can't be in the same profession, we need a variety. We chose according to what we thing we will be good at and our aptitude and we are supposed to do our best at what we do. If one study how each profession evolved, one would know that they are all meant to be reputable, but in reality, most are not and it's not an individual issue.

I know of people who started off at medical school, drop out, then hop to law school and that kind of thing. Did they first enter medicine because they think it is a reputable profession and was that their only concern? If so why the hop? :wink:

Good Sense: I am not sure if I made myself clear. I have nothing against religion and I didn't say that a religious person is not good, all I said was a person who is not religious is no bad. And I do think relgion is a very private thing and each person can be religious in their own way, and there is nothing wrong in it. I was just telling Arthi to have a open mind about it, that is all :)

Fire: Teaching is not at all boring. The teachers I had in school used to love teaching. Each year a new set of students, a new challenge :) A good teacher uses his/her skills to take up the challenge of teaching the students from the best to the worst. They have to get the attention of the most inattentive student in the class, but at the same time keep the class interesting for the most brainy! Imagine catering to 30+ students of varying interests and concentration levels at the same time. How can that be boring? If a teacher does their job right then there is no boredom in that :)

Esp. if its like, customer service, u may get to interact w/ diff. ppl. every single day but the nature of interaction will usually be the same......each & every one wud usually hav sum complaint or need for sum service to talk abt.......& therez no way u cud interact w/ customers/encourage such interaction from them on ne other basis....its always (supposd to be) business-like, to-the-point. Tats it!

They have to get the attention of the most inattentive student in the class, but at the same time keep the class interesting for the most brainy! Imagine catering to 30+ students of varying interests and concentration levels at the same time. How can that be boring?
Exactly again! :D Even tho I was teaching only adults, tat too for jus 2 hrs a day, I had one batch full of lively & jovial students who wer not only quick in picking up but also became like good friends to me.....the next (last) batch was...well, ......:) but then ther wer only 6 students in it, so...! :D

If a teacher does their job right then there is no boredom in that :)
Exactly again! :lol:
The trouble is, teaching has lost its true value today wher most who take up this job do so as an only option for the time being or bcos of the convenience they get (less working hrs than office-goers & as GS says, no need for seeking more sources for teaching, enuff if u teach within the book syllabus!)......I'd notice the teachers in the school wher I worked......most of them looked like bored housewives going for daily shopping or on sum picnic! This lack of zeal within them themselves is responsible for making teaching a mundane, almost mechanical job! Apart form the fact abt low-pay!
Ironically, the Govt., wich is promoting techie jobs so much doesnt care abt a more important job like this!
Oh well! I seem to be digressing again.......! :P :lol:

in the place i study, the profs have very interesting breaking research to do. these research areas are closely linked with the next thing on the market! or they have some other job just as interesting. and the lectures are very interactive with demonstrations and they also talk abt the cool things they are doing research on. so i don't know abt the type of prof u r talking abt. i wouldn't become like that kind of prof anyway. if i were to become a prof i would come back to my uni here. but i am not totally interested in teaching actually.

yeah, in the best schools yes. like the schools i went to. but most of the other schools, no. and at school level of education, there is only so much one can do. whereas at a uni level, the prof will tell us sth according to the syllabus and then sometimes say sth like all that is crap and when u take this subject in the 2nd year, we will say sth else, which is also not totally accurate and then he will go on to talk abt his research and what has been found out and what is still being debated etc. and at times when they want to show us evidence of what they are teaching they will either bring along sth from their research or show us video clips and pics, etc. for eg, one of my profs is working on flat projection tvs which are capable of showing 3d images cos projection beats digital hands down except for the fact that projection tv can't be flat (i mean, that's why serious photgraphers use film cameras rather than digital cameras, though digital is also improving greatly.) but now projection tvs can also be flat. so we've got a winner!

ok, sorry for the long digression.

after my time i guess. loads of changes with the education system recently. what with IP, etc. but i think they are actually stressing the kids out by giving them too many options. kids don't know whether to do AP or O levels. and there seems to be an entrance exam for nearly every JC. and removing the official ranking for schools is not going to change the fact that some schools will always be at the top!

i guess you would most likely say that u would prefer sth like that, but not really put it down as one of your expectations. just say what kind of person you would prefer when you are casually talking. but not really go up to your parents when they are looking for a guy/girl and tell them that this is what you expect.

My wish list:

-To be open-minded;
-A Rational thinker;
-Not tooo sensitive to simple issues;
-Shud not be a couch potato - aprum enakku soru kidaikkadhu.;
- to be interested in Tamil literature: Reading tamil literature will make one's mind broad;
-Be practical and assertive.

N Important of all these - Rasippu thanmai....similar to the creative design that Kamal Hassan & Madhan will do from the spilt dish in the film "Anbe Sivam".

I want a wife who will work and send me to school. And while I am going to school I want a wife to take care of my children. I want a wife a wife to keep track of the children's doctor and dentist appointments. And to keep track of mine, too. I want a wife to make sure my children eat properly and are kept clean. I want a wife who will wash the children's clothes and keep them mended. I want a wife who is a good nurturing attendant to my children, who arranges for their schooling, makes sure that they have an adequate social life with their peers, takes them to the park, the zoo, etc. I want a wife who takes care of the children when they are sick, a wife who arranges to be around when the children need special care, because, of course, I cannot miss classes at school. My wife must arrange to lose time at work and not lose the job. It may mean a small cut in my wife's income from time to time, but I guess I can tolerate that. Needless to say, my wife will arrange and pay for the care of the children while my wife is working.

I want a wife who will take care of my physical needs. I want a wife who will keep my house clean. A wife who will pick up after my children, a wife who will pick up after me. I want a wife who will keep my clothes clean, ironed, mended, replaced when need be, and who will see to it that my personal things are kept in their proper place so that I can find what I need the minute I need it. I want a wife who cooks the meals, a wife who is a good cook. I want a wife who will plan the menus, do the necessary grocery shopping, prepare the meals,serve them pleasantly, and then do the cleaning up while I do my studying. I want a wife who will care for me when I am sick and sympathize with my pain and loss of time from school. I want a wife to go along when our family takes a vacation so that someone can continue care for me and my when I need a rest and change of scene. I want a wife who will not bother me with rambling complaints about a wife's duties. But I want a wife who will listen to me when I feel the need to explain a rather difficult point I have come across in my course of studies. And I want a wife who will type my papers for me when I have written them.

I want a wife who will take care of the details of my social life. When my wife and I are invited out by my friends, I want a wife who take care of the baby-sitting arrangements. When I meet people at school that I like and want to entertain, I want a wife who will have the house clean, will prepare a special meal, serve it to me and my friends, and not interrupt when I talk about things that interest me and my friends. I want a wife who will have arranged that the children are fed and ready for bed before my guests arrive so that the children do not bother us. I want a wife who takes care of the needs of my quests so that they feel comfortable, who makes sure that they have an ashtray, that they are passed the hors d'oeuvres, that they are offered a second helping of the food, that their wine glasses are replenished when necessary, that their coffee is served to them as they like it. And I want a wife who knows that sometimes I need a night out by myself.

I want a wife who is sensitive to my sexual needs, a wife who makes love passionately and eagerly when I feel like it, a wife who makes sure that I am satisfied. And, of course, I want a wife who will not demand sexual attention when I am not in the mood for it. I want a wife who assumes the complete responsibility for birth control, because I do not want more children. I want a wife who will remain sexually faithful to me so that I do not have to clutter up my intellectual life with jealousies. And I want a wife who understands that my sexual needs may entail more than strict adherence to monogamy. I must, after all, be able to relate to people as fully as possible.

If, by chance, I find another person more suitable as a wife than the wife I already have, I want the liberty to replace my present wife with another one. Naturally, I will expect a fresh, new life; my wife will take the children and be solely responsible for them so that I am left free.

When I was in college this was a piece that was recommended by my teacher. Hard hitting and funny is a deadly combination. Most memorable piece of feminist writing I have come across. It stings precisely because the exaggeration is only mild.
