Recently, I have got a very big doubt. WHy do women buy jewels? I really think it is a waste of money. Paying thousands just to wear...it is rather ironic. That money can be used for so many constructive purposes.

I get irritated whenever my mother buys gold. It is so expensive and all people do with it is just to wear it during parties and functions.

What do u think? Can someone please educate me on what is so great about gold? IS it that important enough to pay thousands.

If this money spent on gold can go to charity, the world would be a much better place..

Yeppa vidunga pa avarai...avarae intha ipod naalae manasu odeinchi poi thirumbi vara mataar nu namma varputhi thaan vanthaaru...Jewellery is materialistic..it can look nice on us..but thats all it can do...once burned its nothing but ash just like human ash..and paper ash..and the reason why women buy jewellery is to make themselves look more presentable and sometimes for suitable grooms to notice them(olden days)...but now its more of a fashion statement.

But you should remember that humans are attracted to everything materialistic...just like women can be glued to jewellery at times...teens are glued to fashion trends like mp3 players..Hps which are materialistic...boys glued to a womans beauty which is also materialistic...and all of us glued to money which is also materialistic..the day all of us can overcome materialism is the day you can see all these money go for constructive purposes...:)

Personally, I'm not into Gold nor is my wife but I guess women normally view it as a purchase they can keep forever & hand over to future generations-perhaps, they seem to consider it inferior to wear Imitation Jewellery? Or what others would think ?

i guess buying/collecting jewelry/ gold is good in some ways. think we r running out of gold, somewhere near in future! what shall we do then! then i guess gold must have a great demand(though it could be made chemically) and selling them afterwards is quite worthy, just like collecting antics etc!

oh dear, aathma is not the activator, it is a substance or thing or divinity in each and every thing on this earth! its in u, its in me, its in stone, its in grass, its in every tiny atoms, electrons , neutrons and also protons. it is not a life substance

apropos ur question who is the lifeforce? hmmmmmmmmmmmm substance around us! oxygen etc etc.

lifeforce force that makes us living organism! do u prefer calling aathma as living force? does it make other non living stuffs/organism non aathmas?

I like gold, but not tons of it...I have a modest set of gold jewellery and I have personally selected all the designs and patterns with my own hard earned money...so I did not tax my parents for my wedding jewellery at all! :D

I think it all depends on the designs...if we select designs which are more like blocks than intricate ones, then anybody will have an aversion to it. :(

Imagine a woman without any jewellery...she will look very plain..a simple earring and a simple chain will bring out the hidden beauty :) When we dress ourselves in our traditional pattu sarees, what else can compliment our sarees except our gold jewellery :D

she wore NOOL SAREE and got married. She does not wear gold too.

I appreciate her with heartfelt respects. I plan to give up entire gold wearing funda (even if its migre) very soon, sadly my mom is against it

She would have stole the show if she was very simple. She has natural beauty, why adorn more and make it look like a glaring show?????????

It funny to see her all glitters and glares.

In olden days, I believe women wore jewellery of various metal, wood jewellery etc. It would reflect their personality.

These days everybody wears gold. Therez nothing to differentiate one woman's individiality, taste, attitude, personality with another. JUST GOLD SAME GOLD with diff designs. Therez no fun

I had some rare pictures of italian jewellery forwrded recently. Its just not merely gold. So many wonderfully decorated metals, wood etc were there.

[tscii:8cad0ea967]Jewellery has been around since the time man learnt to make tools. There are many Stone Age jewellery found and it continues to this day. So its no surprise that we are found of jewellery, mainly women because it looks good on us more than men.

When the commodity is not easily available, its value increases. Just a supply – demand gap. Example wars were fought over pepper in Europe simply because pepper was difficult to get hold of, in those days. These days the Supermarkets in UK are flooded with cheap pepper from Vietnam and the original Kerala pepper is still expensive.

As far as mining goes, mining is dangerous and there are many mining accidents from time to time. If we start boycotting for this reason then we cannot use any product starting from electricity (remember coal has to be mined).

Gold is a world accepted commodity (much higher in value than the paper currency) and there are a lot of livelihoods which thrive as a result. Surely we don’t want all of them to be jobless and increase the unemployment rates….

But I accept the boycott of silk (killing lots of silkworms) and real pearls (lots of oysters are killed for finding just a few pearls), but gold come on….give a break. :)

i'm a biggggggg bigggggg BIGGGGGG accessories fan! but only for silver and diff types of silver, and other cheap metals.

i duno why but cheap metals look so much better than expensive ones like gold!!!

When i wear gold i try and make it look more modern....like big gold hoops, and really light gold that looks fake, cos if gold looks gold its just UGLYYYYYYY!

WHITE GOLD

it looks exactly like silver! its just gold dipped into some white stuff and so it turns out in the colour of silver

yeah gaayu, whilte gold, and oxidised looks more pleasant.

Even wooden jewellery is very trendy and nice.

I recently got a nice cute set which had painted preserved leaf and beads.

Believe me it looked awesome :) So trendy to wear with any kinda outfit.

***
Electricity has become necessiry from luxuary
Paper is deforestation too. we need to atleast recycle if not atleast boycott.

So its never ending. Why only gold is it not?

well because, THOSE ARE NECESSITIES, whilst gold is
FOR EXTERNAL SHOW.

Atleast therez no use of gold except for ornamental issues and lil health values (which is too minimal)

Unemployment by killling so many innocent lives?Atleast killing is better, sad that are deformed. In and around mining areas of gold, I was told, many lives (not humans alone) are deformed by birth due to the pollution of mining.

ALL THAT AT THE EXPENSE OF WE DECORATING OURSELVES. ?

oFCOURSE the whole world functions on demand and supply theory. Prices and inflations result on demand and supply theory.

A forture for torturing millions of life and the gain is FLAUNTING OURSELVES?

hmm....... ateast I would like to reconsider.

again...... its just my 2 cents alone.

Yup white gold is awesome! but silver is the best!

its soo pointless, people spend so much on gold for a show off but u can look so much better and buy so many other different types of accesories with a cheaper metal.

i personal believe that silver looks so much better than gold. if u spend the same amount u spend on one gold earing on silver, u can buy soooo many more things, like nearly 10 silver necklaces!

plus silver necklaces look so much better tooo!!!!!!!!!!

i tell my mum that silver looks so much better than gold, so why can't i just wear silver to temples etc

and she answers back:

golda pota thaan mariyathay kedaikum :banghead:

its soooooooooo annoying

but one thing....silver only suits some type of out fits, like jeans etc, and gold only suits some types out outfits like half sarees

i'm not against gold. i just hate it the way people wear it to look rich

i would wear it, if it suits the clothes i'm wearing, thats why to temples, if i go in chudhidhar i won't wear silver, simply because it doesn't suit it, and i wont wear gold for jeans, cos they aint go together.

i will wear gold if it looks good with the dress i'm wearing, but i wont wear it just too look rich :banghead:

Recently I celebrated my 13th wedding anniv. My husband was all bent on buying something for me.
Something really worthy. He opted to buy a big

I went to check some designs and prices.
I was TAKEN ABACK to listen to how much it costed. I could BUY SOOOOOOO MUCH WITH SAME MONEY.

loads of salvars, dresses, books, paintings, interiors for my house, art works,........... my god!!!!!!

[tscii:857d348994]SP,
Electricity is still a luxury in many parts of India.
In the financial market gold is an indispensable commodity. Its said the wise always invest in gold.
I do understand your concerns about mining disasters. This is a problem in all mining industries. The conditions of the miners have to be improved and technology has to be deployed in the miner’s best interest in all mines.
Just don’t look at gold as something we flaunt, if its not gold it would have been something else.
Gold is a flexible metal and mixed with copper, we can make very intricate designs and this might be the reason that it was considered to make jewellery.
Personally I don’t find it wrong to wear gold. Its individual preference and interpretation I guess.

theres nothing wrong in wearing gold....but we shouldn't wear it just to look rich.....

we should wear anthing that suits the outfit we are wearing and NOT TO SHOW OFF

thats just what i think.

I do agree with u totally here. Things go on. If not this therez something else. Guess its survival of fittest after all. Man has brain, power, inteligence, to use and to misuse too. I understand its too late to change and go back into stone age :D. We do have to live along.

Why do some buy Jaguar, a car is a car and just a means of transport.
There are lot of other things that can go on the list
My question is why zero in on Gold…………….

I would like to share this with all of you.

Recently I celebrated my 13th wedding anniv. My husband was all bent on buying something for me.
Something really worthy. He opted to buy a big
necklace (lil long trendy ones in gold, which is in vogue now)

I went to check some designs and prices.
I was TAKEN ABACK to listen to how much it costed. I could BUY SOOOOOOO MUCH WITH SAME MONEY.

loads of salvars, dresses, books, paintings, interiors for my house, art works,........... my god!!!!!!

I refused it saying its costing too much.

My finance-manager husband reply was

"Please go ahead and buy, money is not an issue, even if u dont like it, u can save it for our daughter's future"

I was kinda pissed off that all this hype was just to save and invest than buying me something for our aniversary..........

Much as i admire your notions & principles, I can't help agreeing that your husband is also right- the gold prices are only going to spiral up not come down, so anything you buy now will be useful at the time of ur daughter's wedding- I'm sure ur husband wouldn't have said this if u had no daughters.

Recently, I have got a very big doubt. WHy do women buy jewels? I really think it is a waste of money. Paying thousands just to wear...it is rather ironic. That money can be used for so many constructive purposes.
Why do men buy such a rich costumes? Why do men uses high class boots? Why do men uses high class fragrance? Why do men boose and smokes? Why do ppl uses ipods and camera mobiles? If you say these things are their rights and for their pleasures ofcourse women does the same thing for their pleasure only!! and its an investment!!

I get irritated whenever my mother buys gold. It is so expensive and all people do with it is just to wear it during parties and functions.

Have you ever know that how far your mother got irritated for the expenses you have made? If not then you are a smart son,Only during parties? Come to India even a poor old lady will wear a small amnt of gold in her body! Who said India is poor?Country like US has gold in their depository..Here it got spread all over!! If every citizen of India gives one gram of Gold to their country,India can even buy Singapore!!

What do u think? Can someone please educate me on what is so great about gold? IS it that important enough to pay thousands.

Dont tell this to your Girlfriend!! Dont expect dowri as gold..Why not Platinum??

If this money spent on gold can go to charity, the world would be a much better place..

Good that you are thinking about charity!! How about cut short your personal expenses and donate it to the charity!! I think more than 10K can be donated :D

Girish you have to answer my queries cleary to get the proper clarifications about Gold!

Well, I will answer you. Ipods and camera mobiles have purposes and can serve as entertainment. However, jewels cannot do any thing useful. It can't entertain and is just very very expensive. Objects like camera phones and Ipods are more useful and are cheaper than gold.

Precisedly, that is the weird thing about Indians. They have too much of a fanatsy for gold. These poor people can do so much with the money used for gold. I daresay that even animal manure is more useful than gold.

Gold is indeed very expensive and is perfectly USELESS. It can't do a single thing except helping in the future. Don't worry....I won't tell my Gfs

Regarding charity....why should I cut my expenses. I am not using my money on things which are perfectly no use to me. If I buy an Ipod, it helps me pass time. But gold is much more expensive and does not help anyone at all. It just creates many evil and bad thouhts in women.

This gold and jewels is the cause for many prestige problems we see in our daily lives. So..what is the point of buying it. Ok..I am not talking about charity as I am not really very generous. But...the money has so much better purposes. For $4000 used in buying gold, something better like a TV or computer can be bought. Such objects have much more purpose and value.

Funny Girish ! Most of them invest on this for their GFs or Wife or Mother !
how much gold do u wear dear ? hardly a chain n a ring thats it max !

Also such kind of rare elements are presented to make the person feel important and special (as Shakthi rightly pointed out) ! U r just rare like that jewel :-) is wat i would say my wife and my mom, if i buy her something rare like GOLD or any JEWELS !

Nowadays even girls are feeling irrirted wearing jewellery ... u can see so many with bare necks  but a lot of rings in the fingers (some metal) and

A beautiful simple diamond necklace or a platinum necklace would add beauty for any feminine beauty !

Women have their own interest like men. As long as they dont pull a guy to jewel shopping, it should be fine (I guess :P).

I agree with dsath, on gold as an investment. Gold prices have doubled in 6 years (from Rs 392 in 2000 to around Rs. 800 presently).

Alan,

I like being gifted cause, 'I AM SPECIAL'
not because 'ITS TIME TO INVEST"

Then why just anniversary ? Any normal day would do.
Why my choice ? Anyone else's would do.
Why necklace? Just a coin or gold biscuit would do.

sorry....... I was hurt. I refused the gift and...
I would refuse it if its offered in similar way.

Yeah, I understand what you are saying......... :o

:o :P why are u surprised :D

btw, my hus was very hurt too. He is bent on getting something, esp using better words with me, during my birthday :D (which is very soon)

:P

Well, I understand but still I think you should not have let your ego come in between & refuse it- after all, your daughter is a part of you, an extension of u...........buying for her for her marriage really does not mean anything else- My mother used to buy heavy Gold every year for her wedding Anniversary to give my sister for her wedding- My sis got married in 2001 when the gold prices were just beginning to spiral upwards & the recesion had already set in........but we did not have to take any extra gold as all the pieces mom had bought were real solid & heafty pieces, done so with careful planning, ie certain amount of traditional jewellery, certain amt of stone jewellery etc.

So, that was why I was surprised when you refused to take the gift from your hubby.

Shakthiprabha.
9th May 2006, 02:55 PM
:surprised:

well......... I am clueless what to say.

yup I agree it ws my ego after all.

not only ego....... also pondering on matters regarding........ why so much money on something which would lie in my locker 90 percent of the time.

Buying gold can be looked as an investment...as it has high liquidity and a rare metal.
Buying at these high prices can be avoided..it will come down in a few months period.

Charity can never eradicate poverty..
Charity lets laziness to grow and it curbs the self-esteem of the receiving people especially when they are children.

My wife likes silver very much and had bought a couple of silver sets. But the sets did not include nose studs. So she asked me to get silver nose studs to match. I really had tough time getting them, because silver nose studs are just not avialble. Ultimately, I think she got some 4 -5 silver nose studs made.

To look good...see i wouldn't wear green trousers and a tight orange top..it jus doesn't look good, like that with most indian clothes gold looks the best but now for the most western style indian clothes white gold looks the best because you can have white gold with many different types of stones like diamonds n stuff etc....but for casual stuff silver and plastic is the besttttttt...i only wear what goes with my outfit and what suits me.....

I think Gold jewels were purchased by the parents of the women who were going to get married, bcos it's considered auspicious to wear Gold ornaments. Besides, the Gold will help the family in times of crisis, like severe debt, or if the woman's husband passes away without leaving behind much of savings. Later on, the glitter of Gold & the status associated with it made Gold jewels much sought after by women. Even though branded jewel makers tried to project Platinum jewels as the "in" thing, Gold jewels are the ones most preferred by women. As for charity, the old saying is "Charity begins at home" !

The problem is, the husband and wife have different conception of what marriage is.
For the man (like Mr. Lambretta !!) wife is an equal partner. (That I am still wondering where is this equality coming from, is another issue)
For the wife, the husband should be like a puppy, collared and leashed, jumping around her, and grateful for the little crumbs of biscuits that she throws at you now and then.
She is Queen of Sheba and the husband has to be continuously trained and moulded (!!) to deserve to be her attendant. :D :D

Nope...Well if we really take marriage up as a path to eternal love instead of looking it as a struggle, a hindrance..then perhaps such thoughts will slowly be erased. Compromising and understanding is a must in marriage as we have to remember that marriage consists of two individuals who have aspirations and at the same time also want to live with each other. Both husband and wife must be able to accommodate each others wishes and dreams provided it is justified instead of looking at man as superior and woman as inferior or vice versa.

And you see, there is nothing like chicks in T shirts for motivation to jog 6 kms.!!!

hmmm.. That doesn't give the real picture.
I guess it depends..
To jog 6 kms, I don't think we would require that extra motivation. If We have to sleep more, We might require :?

Also, The distance that we can jog is directly proportional to that too !

Some interesting information relevant to the thread's topic:

This week's issue of Tamil weekly Kumudam carries an article on acupuncture. The article claims the art was born in India but became popular in China. According to its author the various jewels worn by our ladies are curative for various ailments.

Here is the list of beneficial effects of the ornaments our ladies wear:

netrisutti for avoiding migraine
earstuds for the good of eyesight
nosestud for the good of stomach
neck jewels for stimulating the brain nerves
bangles for correcting hormonal deficiencies
rings for sexual stimulation
anklets for strenghtening the pelvis
'metti'(toering) for strengthening the uterus

Seems our ancestors were wise to bedeck the womenfolk with jewellery! :D In old historic movies menfolk are also seen fully adorned with heavy jewellery. When did we lose our gender equality? :P No wonder men are realising what they lose & are hastening to rectify the loss by wearing jewels again!

I don't think this is true..
Inspite of wearing jewellery,
women give migraine to others,
every thing appears to them in colours,
they can't stomach husband's joys,
their nerves don't seem to reach their brains at all,
they attempt to be more manly than men,
they seem to stimulate 'head aches' to coincide with husbands sexual stimulation,
their pelvis seems to be strengthened by tyres of fat,
and Indian women don't need any strengtherining of their uterus !!!!

Shekhar, your findings may be true, truer it is that conditions might be worse without this 'jewellery protection'! Just imagine your plight then! :rotfl:
