in ravanaprabhu the song sung by Jayachandran--" ariyathe" has got the real look of vidyasagar's "manimuttathavani" from dreamz.yes suresh peters is good but he will have to strive hard than ever to create a symphony like "entharu mahanu" from devadoothan which vidyasagar has done excellently.even suresh peters copied his master A.R.rahaman. the bit between Thenkasippattanam's "oru simham" is the same as we heard it in "avaishanmughi".last year thenkasippattanam was a big hit but there were no nominations for suresh peters.but every year vidyasagar has his own style. 1996--azhakiya ravanan.1997--varanappakittu,krishangudiyil oru pranayakalathu.1998--pranayavarnangal,summer in bathlahem, oru maravathoor kanavu.1999--usthaad,niram,chandranuddikkunnadikkil.2000--millennium stars, sathyam sivam sundaram, dreams, madhuranombarakattu, raakkilippattu ,devadoothan.2001--dhosth,randam bhavam.he is a legend.

just don't say vidyasagar plays for money.u say he does several films a year. that's because he can do any music.he is the same one who did shukriya from niram and the classical yadhuvamsh yamini from dubai.even mohan sithara does several music a year.why didn't suresh peters' songs come in the vanitha top ten list in 1998 and 2000 when his punjabi house and thenkasippattanam released.but from 1996, vidyasagar had his first movie azhakiya ravanan's songs in the charts. then every year we had his songs.

I'm basically from tamil background. I started exploring malayalam songs only during college days, and am hooked since then. I just love the strongly melodic side MFM.
On this page I'll be posting songs with links (one at a time) that I recently found a linking for. Everyone is welcome to post songs that they liked recently or would recommend to others. It could be any song from MFM, but a link for the song and writing 2-3 lines on why you like it, is most appreciated.

I'll start with this song: 'orangalil' from Thalolam.
Thalolam (1998)
Director : Jayaraj
Lyrics : Kaithapram Damodaran Namboothiri
Music Director : Kaithapram Viswanathan
Singer : Sudeep Kumar
Year : 1998
http://www.musicindiaonline.com/l/20/s/movie_name.3928/singer.2611/
I have heard about sudheep. Though sounds like MG sreekumar, he has done a good job in this song. Resembles 'pramadavanam' (his highness abdullah) to some extent, but very melodious. I think it's based on Jog.

the king of music is none other than Jayachandran. He was/is able to sing all the varieties of songs. He is the only singer with variety. He never is pitch out while singing like other even famous singers
he maintains the form even at this age.that is his speciality

'shiva garuda' from Kochu kochu sandhoshangal.
Kochu Kochu Santoshangal (2001)
Actors : Jayaram, Kavya Madhavan, Samyukta Varma
Lyrics : Kaithapram Damodaran Namboothiri
Music Director : Ilayaraja
Year : 2001
kiru introduced this album to me. This has to be my favorite in this album. A composition by ilaiyaraja with a different flavour (for someone familiar with his tamil songs). Set in subhapantuvarali, gives a nice pathos touch. Chitra has done full justice to the song.

'chella charukaatre' by Venugopal and humming by Chitra.
Sainyam
Lyrics : Shibu Chakravarthy
Music Director : Venkatesh S P
This is a simple melody. I believe it's picturised on scenery background, for which the song sounds apt. Sung nicely by Venugopal too.

'maanasa nilayil' from Dhwani.
Dhwani (1988)
Director : Abu A T
Lyrics : Yusuf Ali Kechery
Music Director : Naushad
Year : 1988
http://www.musicindiaonline.com/l/20/s/movie_name.3255/
A very sweet melody. Right from the hummimg by KJY, this song will take you to a world of peace and harmony, every moment of which you'll relish. Aberi shades are there, but this light classical number can be enjoyed just for the tune & KJY. A classic from Naushad.

Nice thread. I've been looking for something like this for a long time!
So now, may I ask a question: you guys know about Ouseppachaan's second film, 'Chilambu', directed by Bharathan? What I would like to know is, are there any songs other than 'Thaarum Thalirum' and 'Kudamurai Kalyaanam' in the album, or is it just these two songs? These two songs are the only ones available at sites like musicindiaonline, so I'm wondering... were there any other songs that didn't get recognition?
I am allowed to post queries like this, aren't I?
RR
15th January 2005, 08:03 AM
Nitya: pls.. no formalities, anything on MFM is ok.
'Harikrishnans' was by him, rite? Haven't heard 'Chilambu'. Can you tell me about the two songs you mentioned?

'azhage ninmizhi' by KJY,Chitra.
Amaram (1991)
Director : Bharathan
Lyrics : Kaithapram Damodaran Namboothiri
Music Director : Raveendran
Year : 1991
Nice melody... I thought this song had an unusual usage (very light) of Kanada
Nitya
16th January 2005, 05:47 AM
RR, what I can say is, both songs are available to listen at musicindiaonline and other Malayalam music sites. 'Kudamurai Kalyaanam' is a semi-classical song based on Aarabhi or Sudhasaveri raagam, and has some awesome and intricate orchestration, including harp, naadhaswaram, kanjira, etc. Its singer is KS Chitra. 'Thaarum... Thalirum..' sounds like a pathos or semi-pathos duet song by KJ Yesudas and Lethika. This song also has some extravagant orchestration. I don't think this is a song that can be mapped to any raaga, so let's just say the scale used is a juxtaposition of the Western natural and harmonic minor.
These two songs sound infinitely more classy than so many of the half-baked tunes Ousepachan has given of late. Could this have been due to Bharathan's assistance? I think so!!
Regards,
Nitya
RR
16th January 2005, 08:39 AM
nitya, both are superb finds. Yes, 'pudamurai kalyanam' seems to be in the suddha saveri family. The orchestration is cool, at the level of 'kaadhal mayakkam'.
I found another song 'poovenna poo' here:

This too is nice. I think it's in Arabi.

'iniyum parimava' by KJY & chitra.
Kaikudunna Nilavu (1998)
Director : Kamal
Lyrics : Girish Puthenchery
Music Director : Kaithapram Viswanathan
Year : 1998
http://www.musicindiaonline.com/l/20/s/movie_name.3465/ (first song)
I saw the tamil version of this movie ('nilave unakkaaga') in 1999 and liked this song instantly. Since then I've been looking for the original but couldn't find the malayalam title until recently.
This is a beautiful abogi-based song. very sweet on the ear. In the movie, shalini is picturised as learning the song from her guru. Chitra who has given her voice has excelled in this song. Just listen to the short neravals and high pitched swaras at the end.

Cindy,
I searched for 'nee januaryil' but couldn't find it here:
http://www.musicindiaonline.com/l/20/s/movie_name.6817/
So explored each song and found it's been called 'rose blue rose' (last but first song in the list). Pretty good attempt 'remix-ing' Beethoven's Fur Elise, in the lovely voice of sujatha. I like it.
Akale is a very different, and a bold album. Did it become a hit?
Cindy

I dont know... i dont think it became a hit.. that was a movie *ing Sheela, Geethu, Prithvi.
most of the time when the songs become a hit.. the movie flops.. so is the case with Five star hospital.. the songs are too good. maranno nee nilavil... is my all time fav.

1. Dwadasinalil Yamini (one of the most beautiful and complete classical based songs of India)
Two Fantastic VJ songs of the 70s: (this is one super genius composer)
2. Lovely Evening (chandana chola)
3. Aazhi Thira Maalakal Azhakindey
One song in the league of Salilda' Sandhye of SJ:
4. Natha Nee Varu Kalocha Kelkuvan (unbelievable song)

Down music lane
P.K. AJITH KUMAR
Veteran composer V. Dakshinamoorthy's hallmark is the classic touch he added to all his evergreen songs.
When P. Leela, who was supposed to sing a lullaby for the 1960 film, 'Seetha,' failed to turn up, music director V. Dakshinamoorthy decided to introduce a new voice to Malayalam film music. Her name was P. Susheela, but she nearly gave up on that song.
"I can't sing this song, the pronunciation is difficult," she told the composer. He didn't pay heed to her.
The song was 'Pattu padiyurakkam njan…,' which remains a popular lullaby in Malayalam cinema, nearly five decades on. Making Susheela's golden voice heard in Malayalam is one of the many contributions of Dakshinamoorthy.
"I had heard Susheela sing some Tamil songs and was impressed by her voice and rendering; I wanted her to sing that song in 'Seetha,' but she had a problem with the Malayalam letter 'na.' She just couldn't get it right. I told her that she should touch her teeth with the tip of her tongue. She got it right finally, and we recorded the song the following day," says Dakshinamoorthy, who was in Kozhikode recently for a Carnatic vocal recital at the Navaratri festival.
Full of anecdotes
He may be 88, but he can still regale you with many such anecdotes. "It is the first tune that comes to my mind as I go through the lyrics of a song that I retain in the final composition; first impression is the best impression after all. And usually, the producer and the director agree with my choice too. But when I composed 'Kakkakuyile cholloo…,' for the film 'Bharthavu,' the producer T.E. Vasudevan wasn't happy with it and there was no consensus. So I composed another tune and it was decided that we should vote as they were five of us at that time. My original tune won by a huge margin," he chuckles.
This living legend in Malayalam film music says he never wanted to impose music on the lyrics. "What I did was just apply music lightly on the lines."
When he did that, we got immortal songs. He took a two-decade break after composing 'Vathil pazhuthilooden…' ('Idanazhiyil Oru Kalocha'). Recently he recorded three songs for a film titled 'Mizhikal Sakshi.'
It was with Sreekumaran Thampi that Dakshinamoorthy worked with in the highest number of films. They formed one of the most fruitful combinations in Malayalam film music, like Vayalar-Devarajan and P. Bhaskaran-Baburaj.
"Though I was just 26 when I began associating with Dakshinamoorthy, for 'Cochin Express,' I felt comfortable working with him. Our first hit together was 'Hrudaya sarassile…' I would say Dakshinamoorthy was the first composer who brought pure Carnatic music to Malayalam cinema. He knew precisely how to use classical music in Malayalam light music," says Thampi.
If one looks at Dakshinamoorthy's compositions, Kharaharapriya would seem a favourite raga. He explains why: "When I found that 'Uthara swayamvaram…' was loved by people, I thought I would as well tune one song in Kharaharapriya in all my films," he says with a smile.
The Chennai-based composer, who would be visiting Kerala more often as he is one of the judges of a classical music talent hunt on television, is surprised that only a few of his songs are heard in ganamelas. "Maybe because they can't sing some of my compositions for K.J. Yesudas, like 'Kattile pazhmulam…' I have seen only Madhu Balakrishnan attempt that song," says the man who made his debut in Malayalam cinema, with 'Nalla Thanka,' way back in 1950.
Unforgettable
Some of Dakshinamoorthy's unforgettable melodies:
'Ponveyil manikacha…' ('Nrithashala')
'Swapnangal…' ('Kavyamela')
'Hrudaya sarassile…' ('Padunna Puzha')
'Uthara swayamvaram…' ('Danger Buscuit')
'Kattile pazhmulam…' ('Vilakku Vangiya Veena')

Can anyone point me to a good quality link of 'ente vAnampAdi' songs (I could only find the MIO link thru google). FYI, this is not a movie album but a light music album from Tharangini. KJY & KSC singing in their best, prime years and this was a huge hit inside Kerala in late 80's. Interestingly, the "bus audio" culture of TN caught up with Palakkad district during those days and they had these songs all the time.
I had a habit of getting this cassette and gifting to my college mates / relatives in TN. Most appreciated agreeing with me that this was OOW! shalabangnaLE (KSC), poonguruvi nee pullAnguzhaloodhi (has both KSC & KJY versions), vAnampAdikkiLikaluNarnnu (KJY), kAyal thiRakkuLLil (KJY) were my top favourites.
As I don't have that cassette anymore (and neither in any other form), yearning to listen in good quality. Can't locate Tharangini's website (does it have one?).
Any good link will be really appreciated! Also if someone can show me a way to get this CD (or cassette) in USA, it would be great!!

Nostalgic notes
K. PRADEEP
‘Snehasangeeta Sangamam’ celebrated the launch of the K.P. Udayabhanu Foundation.
[Picture: Defining moment: K.J. Yesudas and K.P.Udayabhanu go down memory lane. (Click here http://www.hindu.com/fr/2008/08/29/stories/2008082950370400.htm)]
This was perhaps the most defining moment of a day wholly dedicated to music. The koothambalam at Vylloppilly Samskriti Bhavan in the capital city was packed. The valedictory function of ‘Snehasangeeta Sangamam,’ to mark the formal inauguration of K.P. Udayabhanu Foundation, was over.
The guests on stage were on their feet, the crowd was settling down for the music show ahead, when the compere announced that K.J. Yesudas would sing ‘Kilichilachu…’ (‘Samasya’), that soulful melody composed nearly 30 years ago by Udayabhanu and written by O.N.V. Kurup, both of whom were on stage.
Magical moments
The next couple of minutes were magical. Requesting the orchestra to play softly, Yesudas crooned the lyrics. In the silence, his voice harmonioulsy merged with the orchestra.
Perhaps that one moment was a fitting reply to a loaded question debated at an earlier panel discussion. Lyricists Kaithapram Damodaran Namboodiri, Anil Panachooran, Rajeev Alunkkal, Beeyaar Prasad, music director M. Jayachandran, and critic T. P. Sasthamangalam tried to pin point in vain the reasons for the present state of Malayalam film music. It was pointed out that the change had a lot to do with the changing time and the way songs are pictured by directors.
Visual moods
Ace cinematographer Santosh Sivan had the audience spellbound while recounting his experiences as both cameraman and director.
Training his sensitive lens on visuals and songs from the films he had made, Santosh explained how he tried to capture light, colours and moods. The session threw light on how the quality of a song sequence could be enhanced when it is picturised by a sensitive director and cinematographer.
An interactive audience session headed by singers M. Radhakrishnan and Preetha provided the audience some fun. Keertans by Aswathi Thirunal Rama Varma, patriotic songs by Udayabhanu’s choral group, and other events were packed neatly into the programme schedule.
‘Old is Gold’ featured songs of yesteryear singers. Many were the singers who got a new life through this group, while many young singers used this platform to hone their skills.
Sreekanth and Lalu George, son of the famous singer K.S. George, impressed the listeners.
Curtains came down on the event with a musical tribute, a programme in which Vani Jayaram, Sujatha, G. Venugopal, Kallara Gopan, Sudeep Kumar, Manjari, Azad, Shwetha Mohan, Rajalakshmi, and Aparna Rajiv breathed life into old Hindi and Malayalam songs.
The lasting image was that of Udayabhanu, who played a perfect host the whole day, took the stage with all singers in tow. ‘Evideninno, evideninno…’ in that hauntingly, mesmerising voice evoked not just feelings but images and memories of a singer and man who knows no malice.[/tscii:d1a2ffbe67]

Scoring a winner
S.N.
Ouseppachan wins his first National Film Award for music for his songs in ‘Ore Kadal,’ all of which were composed in Shuba Panthuvarali.
The Gods decided to smile on me and give me this award after working in this field for more than two decades…
Tuneful: Ouseppachan’s hallmark is sheer melody.
It’s third time lucky for music director Ouseppachan who wins his first National award for music with his soulful songs in ‘Ore Kadal,’ the film which has bagged the National award for the best regional film.
“I was told that I had narrowly missed the National award for ‘Unnikale Oru Kathaparayam’ and ‘Freaky Chakra,’ the only film in Hindi that I had composed for… So maybe the Gods decided to smile on me and give me this award after working in this field for more than two decades,” says Ouseppachan speaking on the telephone from Chennai.
Enhancing the mood
He says he considers himself lucky that the award jury were able to judge the merit of the five songs (written by lyricist Gireesh Puthencheery) that are all composed in one raga – Shuba Panthuvarali. The evocative, poignant numbers sung by singers like Bombay Jayashri, flautist Naveen Nair, Sujatha, G. Venugopal and youngsters Vineeth Sreenivasan and Swetha, and the composer himself, had enhanced the mood of the film and the theme.
The music composer is all praise for the director of the film, Shyamaprasad, who suggested that he compose all the songs in one raga to retain and accentuate the mood of the theme. To ensure that the songs did not sound monotonous, he “decided to vary the shruti and tempo” of the songs.
“It was a challenge for me. It is not a difficult task to compose songs in certain ragas like Mohanam or Kalyani but Shuba Panthuvarali is a difficult raga and so the director wondered if it would prove to be a difficult task. But, surprisingly, I took only three minutes each to compose four of the songs. It was the title track sung by Naveen that I had to work on,” recalls Ouseppachan.
He remembers that he was a little perturbed when Shyamaprasad wanted one of the songs (‘Pranaya Sandhya Oru …’) to be rendered in Bombay Jayashri’s silken voice as the tracks for the songs had already been done in a certain pitch. “Jayashri has a lovely low pitch and so I had to rework the pitch for her voice. It turned out to be one of the hits of the audio album although she had a few problems with her diction when we were recording the song.”
The haunting songs in the album reigned over the charts as the film continued to make waves on the festival circuit. However scoring hits is not something new for one of the most consistent music directors in the Malayalam film music industry. Ouseppachan’s hallmark is sheer melody; a trait he has maintained right from the time he entered the music industry as a violinist for maestro Devarajan Master. And ‘Kathodu Kathoram,’ the first music album tuned by him in 1985 was soon followed by the State film award for best music direction for ‘Unnikale Oru Katha Parayam’ in 1987. Over the years many of his songs for films like ‘Aniyathipravu,’ ‘Harikrishnans,’ ‘Kakkothikavile Appoppan Thadikal,’ and so on continue to enthral listeners.
Busy finishing his work for several films scheduled for release, Ouseppachan is in an upbeat mood.
“After 17 years, I am working with Kamal again in his film ‘Aagatham.’ I also have a crop of interesting films such as Jayasurya’s Mohanlal-starrer ‘Angel John’ and Siddique’s Dileep-starrer ‘Bodyguard,’” he says. As long as melody reigns supreme in the world of film music, directors like Ouseppachan will continue to score.

M.G. Sreekumar to be honoured
Thiruvananthapuram: Well-known Malayalam playback singer M G Sreekumar would be honoured at a function here on December 24 in recognition of his completion of 25 years in the film world.
K J Yesudas, P Jayachandran, K S Chithra, Usha Uthup and eminent personalities from cinema would participate in the 'Mega-Show' organised as part of the felicitation celebration, Kerala Tourism Development Corporation and Programme Committee Chairman Cherian Philip told reporters here.
Sreekumar, also present at the press conference, said it was a rare honour and he was very happy. Answering questions, he said he never experienced any kind of obstacle from his seniors Yesudas and Jayachandran during his 25-year-long career.
"If you look on things like that, it would be difficult for one to concentrate on work," he said. Sreekumar, a recipient of two national and three state awards for best songs, became a professional singer after quiting his job with State Bank of Travancore in 1986.
New generation singers were not getting attention due to limitation and poor quality of songs, he said to a question. "Singing for superstar Mohanlal in a good number of films is a turning point and one of the main factors that contributed to the success in my career," Sreekumar, who was born in a family of classical singers here, said.

Sharing a sad news with all. :(
Noted lyricist/scriptwriter Gireesh Puthenchery passed away yesterday due to a brain haemorrhage. The dark hands of death snatched away this prodigious talent at a ripe age of 49, when he had a lot more to offer us art lovers! He was in the process of scripting 'Raman Police', his second film with Mohanlal in the lead after the commercially successful n' critically acclaimed 'Vadakkumnaadhan.' He has also scripted 2 other films, Kinnarippuzhayoram with Sreenivasan in the lead n Pallaavoor Devanarayanan with Mammootty in the lead, both of which met with mixed reactions. The story of blockbuster Jayaram film Melepparambil Aanveedu was also written by Gireesh.
Very few Malayalam films released in a year that did not have "Lyrics: Gireesh Puthenchery" in its title cards. Amidst the quantity, he strived to keep the quality of the lyrics high too, even when writing for the most inanely driven commercial cinema songs. His loss, thereby, leaves a great void in the lyrics department of Malayalam Cinema.
This article is my small way of paying tribute to one of the genuises that graced Malayalam Cinema. Thanks for the magical moments, Gireesh...R.I.P.!
Sharing with you all some of the gems from Gireesh's pen:
Sooryakireedom Veenudanju (Devasuram)
Ethrayo Janmayi (Summer in Bethelehem)
Oru Rathri Koodi Vidavangave (Summer in Bethelehem)
Pinneyum Pinneyum (Krishnagudiyil Oru Pranayakalathu)
Kaikkudanna Niraye (Mayamayooram)
Varamanjaladiya (Pranayavarnangal)
Ponnil Kulichu Ninnu Chandraika Vasantham (Sallapam)
Harimuraleeravam (Aram Thamburan)
Moovanthi Thazhvarayil (Kanmadam)
Marannittumenthino Manassil Thulumbunna (Randam Bhavam)
Aksharathinte (Puraradhivasam)
Sreelavasantham Peeliyuzhinju (Nandanam)
Gange (Vadakkumnathan)
Kalabham Tharam (Vadakkumnathan)
Innale Ente Nenjile (Balettan)
Amma Mazhakkarinu Kanniranju (Madambi)
Apart from the above, Gireesh Puthenchery also wrote lyrics for many successful films in Malayalam Cinema History from the early 90s till 2009 like Thenmaavin Kombathu, Niram, Meesha Madhavan, Hitler, Usthad, Narasimham, Ee Puzhayum Kadannu, Chandralekha, Manassinakkare, Rasatanthram; the last 2 set to tune by none other than the maestro Ilayaraja!

Madhu, I thought joby was not good compared to vidyashankar - seemed to me that the sms votes catapulted him ahead. That might be one reason. It was quite obvious throughout, including finalsa, that vidya was a class apart, not just better.
I was wondering how joby was declared as winner despite awesome comments for vidya's performances from judges in finals compared to him. Later learnt that sms votes plus judges marks were considered. in sms votes, it seems like joby won with a margin of something like a lakh to a thousand

Hi V_S ,There were a lot of these songs in the late 70's and eighties which was a golden era for Lalitha Ganams and devotional albums. Most of the songs which came during these times were smash hits. Dakshinamoorthy was one composer who contributed enormously and the other one was Ravindran. Good to see that youtube has links to some of those memorable classics of yesteryears which shouldn't be missed.

A nice composition in raga darbari kannada from the movie "appu". P Sundarajan who had worked as an assistant for ilayaraja has just scored one song in malayalam and that turned out to be a super hit.Shades of raja found somewhere in those interludes:- Listen to this below

Dam 999 tracks in Oscar's best song list
Three songs from Dam 999, which triggered a political storm between Tamil Nadu and Kerala over Mullaperiyar dam, are competing with 36 other tracks in the Oscar's Original Song category.
The film's songs 'Dakkanaga Dugu Dugu', 'AM999 Theme Song' and 'Mujhe Chod Ke' are in the Academy Award's long list.
The songs are penned by director Sohan Roy and are composed by Indian music director Ousephachan, a well known name in Malayalam cinema.
Ousephachanbn has also given music in Bollywood films like Aakrosh and Khatta Meetha. He won a national award for Malayalam film Ore Kadal.
Dam 999 was banned in Tamil Nadu amid claims that it is based on the sensitive issue of Mullaperiyar dam.
Other tracks competing for the coveted golden trophy include 'The Living Proof' from The Help, 'Coeur Volant' from Martin Scorsese' Hugo, 'When the Heart Dies' from Angelina Jolie's directorial debut In the Land ofBlood and Honey, 'Bridge of Light' and 'The Mighty Sven' from Happy Feet Two.
The 84th Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on January 24 in the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theatre.

This song is a very addictive one. I couldn't stop myself replaying it :) Super melody.. Good watching the younger days 'late' murali too..
I'm in mood for nostalgia :D Panjaagni is one the earliest movies I remember watching on DD sunday afternoon regional movies. I think that's when we shifted to madras, and got a new videocon tv set. I was not really keen until I saw geetha. I instantly recognized her as the 'scissors locket' geetha from ninaithale inikkum. I got interested and watched the full movie bef i realized it's finished. I vaguely remember seeing nadhiya too in some 'thudukku' pen character. what impressed me was mohanlal's cameo. I didn't know his name then but his subdued performance was interesting. I also recall the scene with him and geetha 'sharing bed' together. I think that's when I wanted to know the director's name. I would forget all these for a long time.. until I watched his highness abdullah and rekindled my memories. I guess I'll put a 'thodarum' here ;)

That's an interesting view from a Chennai-vAsi on Panchagni, RR!
This was the 2nd movie I watched after becoming a Palakkadan. The first one was 'kaNdu kaNdarinju' that had M & M where LAlEttan makes a very late entry into the movie (jail-return or something like that) and the theater went raptures...TF-like movie and I don't remember any songs now from that.
Honestly, I didn't like panchAgni movie much at that time (loved it during revisits years later on VHS). I didn't understand a lot of dialogs (fresh to the language) and felt "slow" (too many TF-dose during college days effect).
However, instantly loved the songs! So nice on ears and both KSC & KJY are gifted with the capability to "do something inside" :-)
A rAthri mAnju pOyi lyrics (in English, pls check HERE (http://lyricsview.blogspot.com/2010/02/aa-raathri-maanju-poyi.html)for Malayalam) :

Super! Thanks App and RR for posting your Malayalam favorites mixed with your nostalgia. Aa rathri manju pOyi. What a song by Ravi sir. The way they pronounce 'manju', I will never get it. I don't understand the language much, still can feel the sweetness in the lanuange, like we say sundara telugu, sweet malayalam. I too have watched few films on Doordharshan, but mainly b&w Prem Nazir, Madhu, Jayan movies. Especially sunday 2.00pm they show mainly award winning movies and mostly feature either bengali or malayalam films. They all are good memories.
on-screen: Geetha of 'vAn pOlE vaNNam koNdu' / nalleNNai Chitra  You also have to add 'Idhayam NalleNNai Chitra'
Thanks for the lyrics. So, App you understand Malayalam and can talk fluently?

app, now that you said I too didn't like the movie, or rather didn't understand the overall point. It was a bit too complex for me, and could digest only bits and pieces. Later I think I saw a golt remake (heroine 'fat' radha) and was able to appreciate better. I was too much into IR, so songs, or rather MFM genre, didn't make any impact those days. I was slowly getting into HFM also those days (rafi, kishore, mukesh ones). Now I am much more open, and can take in good music in any genre :)
With lyrics, some translation also pls..
V_S, have to thank app for inspiring us to get nostalgic. singer chitra is just too good in mallu pronounciation. we can only listen and enjoy, can't even dream of pronouncing the words. :) As for the other chitra, she is indded good-looking in this movie ;)

V_Sji, yes I can handle Malayalam (read / write / speak / understand) :-)
RR sir, my Malayalam is not "translating-lyric" level, though  I can try my hand on prose (difficult but possible) but not songs - they have too much of tough Sanskrit portions with complex phrases (means even when I can translate words, I can't do justice to the meaning of the whole sentence). On top of it, sub-text etc...so, let me not distort them :-)

ok, my first attempt on translating a couple of poetic lines from MY to EN
There will definitely be mistakes, could even be total opposite meaning - poRuththaruLka (and I'm doing without any assistance at this point of time)
Also, remember this is from a formidable MTV/Hariharan/ONV Kurup combo and there could be double, triple, multiple meanings to those lines and they should be viewed / fitted in context (This is the team that worked with IR in PR and the MY media manipulated some innocent words of IR into a controversy)...
pallavi:
A rAthri mAnju pOyi (That night has vanished / either the sweetness or the darkness gone)
raktha shObhamAi (blood glowing / blood rush to face / either life is hell or bloody red in the horizon meaning sun rise at last)
aayiram kinAkkaLum pOyi maranju (thousands of dreams have gone away or no more nightmares)
anu pallavi :
pAdAn marannu pOya pAttukaLallE? (aren't these the songs that we forgot to sing / stopped singing?)
nin mAdaththE madhuramAi pAdunnu (that sweetly reverberate now around your dwelling?)
Situation :
A naxalite woman, who is on parole, visits her old friend and this poor thing sings the sweet song to her, in front of her now-drunkard hubby, whom she had "love married". (Geetha is the naxalite woman who is on trial for a murder of an affluent man and gets parole to visit her dying mom, Chithra is the friend). With that being the situation, both interpretations that I've given as translation within brackets for the pallavi are possible :lol2:
However, the anu pallavi is clearly optimistic :-) So, IMI, the singer thinks there's hope for better times...
(IMI - in my interpretation)

Sathyan also directed a sequel to this, called 'pattaNa pravEsam' (with the same Mohanlal / Srinivasan pair) and that was a success as well.
IMO, Sathyan movies were more natural comedies than the Priyadharshan ones which were more famous. (Personally, I immensely love both).

Wasn't there a third part with Dasan and Vijayan - but it was a diluted version in foreign locale. There are talks of a fourth part but never materialises. Yes, Sathyan Anthikkad tapped Mohanlal's talent for everyman roles more astutely. Sanmanasullavarukku is another gem. So is varavelppu.

Plum is right. The third part was called Akkare!Akkare!Akkare! that dealt with the robbery of a crown that happens in US and Dasan and Vijayan are sent to investigate the same but it was directed Priyadharshan and so the natural comic flavour of Sathyan was missing and the film flopped. The role of Gopalakrishan Panniker in Sanmanasulavarukku Samadhanam is one of Lal's best performances [IMO]. As app was talking about Illam in hin SPB - IR thread, somebody talked about Chandrasekar song. People should see Srinivasan doing that here[Pavazhamalli poothulainju-or neelavaanam] -hilarious. Sathyan -Lal combo, another unforgettable is Gandhi Nagar II Street and the Nepali goorkha is still fresh in mind. Thanks app for reminding.

Sorry to be digressing but I really feel that Kerala is ignoring a great artiste, Madhu Balakrishnan. Watching some recent televised Malayalam shows, including the Kerala film awards on Asianet, I get annoyed that the singers who are getting most exposure are the likes of Karthik, who sing Tamil songs in Malayalam shows, or others who move about their arms and legs but can't can't even stick to pitch. Madhu isn't even getting sufficient recording chances since the field is still dominated by older artistes who can no longer sing on stage but are able to sing on records owing to multi-track recording technology. The field is also croweded out by artistes from up north, some of whom can't even pronounce decent Malayalam. Here's a link to a recent gem by Madhu

Another rare one; the only Malayalam film song the legendary Talath Mahmood ever recorded.
From the movie DWEEPU (1975) - Music: M.S. Baburaj.

app,
Kannur rajan sure sounds like a IR wannabe (but falls by a mile ). I vaguely remember there are better songs in this movie. But lizzy is lovely.
Wasn't chithram remade as 'Engirundho vandhan' with satyraja? MSV-TKR got reunited in this movie.

Beautiful songs from Thoovanathumbigal and chitram. I recently saw Thoovanathumbigal (on youtube) but I don't remember seeing this song, may be they took the songs out.
<dig>Wonderful movie, except I don't understand the relationship between Mohanlal and Sumalatha. Suddenly she loves him and one day she abscondsl Later she comes back one night and again disappears. Lastly she comes back married (with another man) with a child. Mohanlal paavam, alaya vitta maathiri thOnichu (may be he was doing the same to girls in the earlier part). May be it is a different subject which I didn't understand.</dig>
Yes, Chitram song resembles IR style, but I also saw resemblances of 'Indira LOgatathu' by TRR from UyiruLLavari Usha.
raagadevan,
Thanks a lot for swapnangal swapnanaLE. Is this song in Sahaana raagam? The starting is very close to krithi, vandhanamu. That was a very rare video of great legends singing the composition.

V_S:
I remember an old interview in which V. Dakhshinamoorthy (Swami) stated that he never worried about which raagam he was composing in when it came to movie songs! Most Malayalam songs those days had pre-written lyrics, and Swami apparently made the tunes to match the situations in the movie, and the lyrics. In fact, several of his great compositions have been raagamaalikas.
In spite of the name raagadevan, I am not an expert in raagas. To the best of my understanding, the duet version of "swapnangaL swapnangaL swapnangaLE..." is in Sahaana, Shanmughapriya and Kalyani. RR and other experts would be able to verify this. I hope to post a few more of Swami's multi-raaga compositions later.
Some trivia on CHITHRAM. Like most Priyadarshan films, CHITHRAM was also remade into Telugu [ALLUDUGARU with Mohan Babu, Shobana and Ramya Krishna]; Hindi [PYAR HUA CHORI CHORI with Mithun Chakraborty, Gautami and Shikha Swarup]; Kannada [RAYARU BANDARU MAAVANA MANEGE with Vishnuvardhan, Dolly and Bindiya]; and Tamil [ENGIRUNDHO VANDHAAN with Sathyaraj, Roja and Aamani]. Thyagaraja's "nagomOmu ganalEni..." sung by M.G. Sreekumar and Neyyatinkara Vasudevan in the Malayalam version was rendered by K.J. Yesudas and Poorna Chandar in Telugu (orchestration by K.V. Mahadevan); and the same recording was reused in the Kannada version too.

RR sir,
Yes, there are definitely better songs in Chithram but I have some personal attachment to 'eeran mEgham' because of the "cool Mohanlal" :-)
Here are the youtube links for other major hits from that movie :
pAdam pooththa kAlam (after Ranjini develops some romantic interest with Lal, there's even some thAli sentiment here):

Prior to this, there's some animosity from Ranjini to Lal as they're only acting as couple for the welfare of the dad of Ranjini, there's even a song, "dhoore kizhakkudhikkum" :

There's a beautiful recital of some standard carnatic song, which is a high point of the movie Chithram (nagumO) :

V_Sji,
thoovAnaththumbikaL has some symbolic stuff, with even rain being a character in the movie :-) That makes the "connection" between the 'thadi contractor & the aspiring vEsi' a very terrific relation!
Well, Lal is not shown to be a "womanizer" in the movie (though he arranges situations for his friends to enjoy women, he himself is shown to be "clean" prior to his relationship to the Clara character and after)...
Their relationship is both shocking and enticing - even for a karnAtakam like me - and that's what making the movie so interesting. OTOH, the relationship with Parvathy is just commonplace / ordinary in the life of a MalayALi...you got to watch the movie a couple of times to relish the whole thadi contractor - Clara relationship...too complicated in my view...
Also, the performance of Lal is simply OOW!
