This thread is similar to the famous ROS Thread in tfmpage. <a href="http://tfmpage.com/forum/ros.html
" target="new">http://tfmpage.com/forum/ros.html </a>
This thread is to discuss the base-Raagam (carnatic/hindhustani) behind hindhi songs.

Based on the discussions we can build a raagam database for Hindhi songs.

Nandri.

Tu milae dhil khilae aur jeenE ko kya chAhiyE- from movie: Criminal.

I believe the old classic "prabhu tErO naam" from Hum Dono and
the recent "kismat se tum humko milE hO" from Pukar are also in Bhim Palasi.

Oldposts

Nalini,'Allah tero naam' starts in 'Gaud Sarang' and moves to Hari Kambhoji (kamaj thaat) in the charanam (reminding me of 'DheerE DheerE machal Aye dil-e-bequaraar' here ) ,ends with traversing the Karaharapriya notes and hence the resemblance to Abheri here. 'yeh zindagi usi ki hai' is predominantly in Bhimplasi with d1 also in the pallavi.
'nainOn mE badhraa chhaayE ' is a blatant lift by Madan Mohan from a Telugu Rajeswara Rao composition sung by S.Janaki. I will get back with the pallavi of the song. The telugu song sounds carnatic-ish and the Hindi version has been cleverly 'Hindi-ised'.

'Thoo mEra chaand main thEri chaandni' from Dillagi and 'Aaj puraani raahOn sE kOyee mujhE aawaaz na dE' (aadmi), both by Naushad have more than a generous sprinkling of Abheri.

SL,
I was referring to the song "prabhu tErO naam, jo dhyaye phal paaye sukh laaye tErO naam". Come to think of it, even this one doesn't sound like Bhimpalasi to me now. I hastily thought it was so, based on a couple of lines in the anthara. It sounds more like dhani to me. What do you think? Enjoyed your informative post. Didn't realise
"allah tErO naam" has sprinkles of so many ragas.

Nalini, nice to exchange ideas with you again. It is a long time since anybody contributed to the 'Old Hindi songs' thread.

'Prabhu terO naam'!!! I had almost forgotten the song. Raag Dhani ....first time I have heard the name :))) Do you have a link to the song ?

About 'Allah...', Jaidev was impressive till he got stuck in the Ghazal mould.

dhani -> hindustani counterpart of suddha dhanyasi?

RR : yes.
here is a list of equivalent ragas in the Carnatic and Hindusthani traditions. http://www.aoe.vt.edu/~boppe/MUSIC/RAGA/hc.html

There is one version of Dhani which uses the exact same notes of Shuddha Dhanyasi. The other version also uses the Chatushruti Ri.

Bhimpalasi and Dhani use many of the same notes, but emphases are different...Prabhu Tero Naam is more of a Dhani than a Bhimpalasi.

Some other Hindi songs that fit this Bhimpalasi/Dhani-ish category:

Chaand Maddham Hai - Lata for Madan Mohan in
"Railway Platform"

Maine Chaand Aur Sitaaron Ki - Rafi, N. Datta,
"Chandrakanta"

and the (in)famous
Tu Cheez Badi Hai - Udit, Kavita K., Viju Shah, "Mohra"

Sriram, I thought that might be you! Yes, the Old Hindi Songs thread was fun. The couple of HFM sites that I know of don't have "prabhu tErO naam". Will certainly provide the link if I can find it.

Sanjeev, thanks for those interesting clarifications.

The following also sound Bhimpalasi-ish to me:
Kuch Dil ne Kaha (Anupama)
Nirdayi Preetam (Stree)

'KhilthE hain gul yahaan' is mostly Dhan in that case. I think M2 creeps in , in the charanam in the line 'in lamhon....'.

Nalini, thx for reminding me of 'kuchh dil nE kaha', a stunner. AR Rahman's 'minnalE nee vanthathEnadi..' , has its origin in this song.

Another one in the same lines as 'MainE chaand aur sitarOn', 'HamnE dEkhi hai' from KhamOshi. Both songs touch G3 at a point and one song can be an extension of the other.

Kuch dhil nE kahaa is one of my all time fves. Have to listen to it again to sense Bhimplasi base.

There was an old old old song by Lata ( can not remember the lyrics) sounding very close to "Kandan Karunai.....", a master piece by Madurai Mani Iyer. Anyone?

Hi Ramji,
Yes, long time!!!! Email me (sriramlak@yahoo.com). Give me the opening lines of the Lata number. Laxmikanth-Pyarelal's 'kOyee nahin hai' (Lata) from Paththar kE sanam shows flashes of Abheri and is impressive.

Vidhya, MS, thanks for that link.
I do not recognize those Tilak Kamod songs either.
Neither could I come up with any Tilak Kamod songs on my own! I'm sure there are many. Does "hum tErE pyar mein sArA Alum Kho baitEn hain" from Dil ek Mandir come close, or is it Desh?

CP, the Hindustani equivalent for Valachi is Kalavati.

hello viren

I have just hear your mp3 composition.I think that you are very good and you must carry on.You have great possibilities in making fusion or mixing genres etc.I hope you will continue your effort and not get discouraged by puritanics even when you are into learning classical music.
wish you very good luck.

I am myself an indian, living in denmark, and a singer.I am myself interested in projects like singing indian and mixing in a funky or rock way.But there is hardly anyone here in denmark who can be approached.
Anyway goodluck to you.

Can the scale start from any note or does it have to start with a certain specified note?

what i mean is, can a raag such as Kafi start E (western scale), or does it always have to start with C?

All of "mayee ree" and "piya basanthi re" are available from music india online under the indipop section. As far as I know, the "pardesiya" song was released in '99 and there are no samples on the web. I would like to know the raagas for these songs that have a distinct punjabi flavor:

1. Hey yara da koi naiyo rabba rabba rabba (Aks)
2. Sajna ne phul mariya (Deewane)
3. Sola baras ki baali umar ko salaam (ek dooje ke liye)
4. Mainu ishq da lagiya rog (Dil hai ki maantha nahin)
5. Jaanejaana o jaanejaana jab jab teri soorat dekhoon (Jaanbaaz)
6. Ki aaja teri yaad aayi, o baalam harjaayee (Charas)
Do such punjabi songs have certain ragas as a base?

I would also like to know ragas of new hindi songs:

1. Meri zindagi mein ik ajanabee ka intazaar hai (Ajnabee)
2. Roshnee se bhari bhari (Ashoka)
3. Tere siva kuch yaad nahin (Title song of Mast)

Hello,

I would really appreciate it if someone could give me a clue on where I can find a list of Hindi film songs having raag bhairavi as their "backbone". I have gone to the geocities page and it is really a treausre trove of information but unfortunately I need songs from the last four years as well to show the evolution of film music (with Raag bhairavi as the "skeleton") over the last fifty years.

Anyone out there who can help me on this one? It would be a real lifesaving mission you're undertaking as this is part of an international project initiated on Indian music and its omnipresence in the lives of Indians.

Thanks in advance.

but i found some possible mistakes in the list.
i am no authority, but wish to confirm from experts in this forum if i am right.

FOLL. songs HAVE BEEN PUT UNDER BHAIRAVI, WHICH I FEEL IS NOT CORRECT

1 Ajahun na aye balma should be chandrakauns or kalyana vasantham?

SONGS 2-8 MENTIONED BELOW ARE NEAR TO ASAVARI(NATABHAIRAVI)
2 Dost dost na raha - Sangam
3 Mera juta hai japani - and Ramiya vasta vaiya - Shri 420
4 Ai mere dil kahin aur chal - Daag
5 Tera jana - Anadi
6 Jare, jare ud ja re panchhi - Maaya
7 Bhari duniya men akhir dil ko samajhane kahan jaayen - Do Badan
8 Hame tumse pyar kitana - Kudarat

9 Jiya jale jaan jale nainon tale - Dil Se...WILL COME UNDER SARAMATHI(WHAT IS THE EQUIVALENT IN HINDUSTANI?), though it has some parts of BHAIRAVI

but i learnt a lot about raagas from this site.
i havent seen the list fully yet, just some observations as of now.

pls let me know whatever is right or wrong. i want to learn from u experts:-)

Probably ARR got inspiration for the 1st line of Vennilave Vennilave(Minsara Kanavu).
right?

satsona: "Megh de" is a nice simple tune.
:)
Yep. Bot the lines sound very same.

Ajahu na aaye - is Sindhu bhairavi predominantly.
Ni3 that clearly comes in the start itself gives the chandrakauns feel.

The song Jab dil jale aana... from the movie Chitchor is mentioned under Kalyan and Yaman at different sites. But in the movie itself, Amol Palekar says it is in Malkauns!!!
So which is correct??

This "Saarang family" article has one sample that differentiates Megh and mahdmath Saarang, clearly showing that megh is madhyamavathi.
http://www.geocities.com/promiserani2/hcragatable.html
this site lists Madhyamavathy===madhmathsarang.

madhmadh Sarang = megh in swarams.
The sample(in Hindhi) discusses the difference. From swarams point of view, both are madhyamavathi.
First he sings madhmath Sarang(more of ma->ri prayogam), second Megh(all swarams independent).

ghanana ghanana - Lagaan is Megh Malhar.
(derived from kaapi).

3. Tu padh le sajan meri aankhon mein --dhai akshar prem ke (Dhai akshar Prem ke)

Bindiya : amazing ! first three sound very similar and are indeed in Pahaadi. 2 & 3 look like they r inspired from 1 !

4th sound similar to "ae mere hum safar" rather than "Jo vaadha kiya".
Listing similar songs for 4,
Chand ne kuch kahaa, raath ne kuch sunaa - Dil tho paagal hai
Dil tho paagal hai Dil deewanaa hai - Dil tho paagal hai

(Played "Dil leke" in keyboard with the first note as PA) it is pure kalyaNi.

This raga jog is very very similar to Thilung.we can identify it only using a few prayogams, which differentiates it from thilung... for example the second line of the song pramadavanam, which goes like.....Hridu raagam pole.... ( sorry for lyrics ), actually is a very good example. If you carefully see, all the songs mentioned will have this payogam.

Tere bina zindagi has more of ahir Bhairav- (chakravakam in carnatic) in its structure. It is not based on one raaga, since the scale progresses to other notes as well. The pallavi is very similar to Pihare Ramarasam sung by Balamuralikrishna.

`kehna hai' is raag kedar of hindustani( similar raag in carnatic music is Valachi).
Chookar is in the C-major scale of western music. Very close to Bhimplas of hindustani and Sankarabharanam of carnatic.

hi guys
tere mere beech mein is shivaranjani as well. As for tere bina zindagi se koi , there is nothinh to suggest ahir bhairav in the beginning. It is shivaranjani as well but it does take foreign notes later on in the song As for rasm-e-ulfat by lata, it is in raga Hemavathi, the 56th melakarta in the karnatak sangeeta system. Lots of karnatak ragas have been adopted into the hindusthani system and hindi songs . This is one of them . Another example is the song meghare megha re mat pardes jare in charukesi, the 26th melakarta. And kehna hai kehna hai aaj tumse kahna hai is in raga abheri, the hindustani equivalent for which is bhimpalas. It has got nothing to do with shankarabharana which is bilawal in hindustani and c-major in western music.khilte haI GUL YAHAN IS also in abheri/ bhimpalas.do diwane is I think based primarily on shuddha dhanyasi[ in karnataka sangeeta] although it takes many foreign notes including dhaivata

* In the song "Tere Mere Sapne" from the film ``Guide," there is an eclectic mix of the traditional and modern facets. Although S. D. Burman has set the song in a rare raag, Gaaraa, the saxophone in short spells for a Jazz effect by Manohari Singh in the original added novelty. Manohari Dada, going strong with half a century of association with the industry, was present at the programme to perform live for a thundering applause from the audience.

* Raag Maand (known as Hemant too) has 24 versions of it sung in the desert land of Rajasthan, and Pahadi originates in Jammu's folk songs, said Ajoy.

* Raag Keeravani was mirrored in many forms: Rafi's "Yaad Na Aaye" was brought to life by Javed Ali, while Ajoy gave a Hindustani touch followed by Carnatic and then traversed the scales effortlessly for a jazz configuration.

* Reliving C. Ramachandra's music in Bhairavi was Mahalakshmi and Javed in "Kaise Avoon Jamuna Ke Teer" while Ajoy brought it out in tappa, khayal, tumri and the Iranian and Afghanistan versions in different taals.

The carnatic equivalent of raag "jinjoti" sounds similar. It is "chenjurutti", and is represented by a lot of compositions dating from far back to folk tunes in tamil.

I was reading the general thread on raags in hindi film songs. I can suggest the ragas. I am pretty sure I shall get it right, at least to the neighborhood. "manamohana" is in raag "jaijaivanti" and not "madhuvanti". It will be hard for me to make a list of songs from this thread. Has anyone compiled a list that I can start from?

Thanks

Wonderful. Happened to check about this Raag Pahaadi and found this link informative with recomendation of few hindi songs.

http://www.soundofindia.com/raaga_details.asp?raaga=72

Heard few of them, and it was just amazing to listen after having an idea of what you are listening to.

But I tend to feel that this raag is quite appealing when its used for a pathos song. How come its soothing for duets too ? Does all raags have this same property or is/are there exceptions ?

RR

Pahadi has a rustic feel, but it's a versatile raga - meaning that it lends itself to other feels in light-classical songs. Sivaranjani and Sindhu bairavi are two other versatile ones. You can do both the happiest and saddest songs with them. No wonder the three are very popular in film songs..

Of course not too many ragas are such versatile - normally! If the composer is creative enough, theoretically any feel can be brought from any raga. It sure is challenging for some ragas, and may sound far-fetched. But IR is an exception to all this. :smile2: He has made a dappankuthu out of chakravagam and a pathos song in mohanam!

I see ...
Checked the list of Raags of IR songs posted by Karthickcb and was amazed to find these songs under the Raga Chakravagam - they all sound entire different :

- Appa Kada Anna Kili (Payul Puli)
- Marandhen Pirandhen (Gitanjali Devotional)
- Vanithamani Vanamogini (Vikaram)

To an amature like myself, these 3 songs don't have the same sound. Amazing.
But I find that this Raga was used by IR for duets alone in Film Music and Mohanam is mixed, the female solo taking the centre stage.

- Abc Nee Vaasi (Kaidhiyin Dairy) is a jolly song, now I find it more jolly.
- Poovil Vandu (Kadhal Oviyam) super Pattu
- Oru Ragam Padalodu (Anandha Ragam) Yesudas humming just ignites means. Did you mean the pathos version of this song or is there another ?

By the by, all my favorite songs are under Mohanam Raga, thus making it my favorite Raga ... LoL

Wonderful.
You see, it took me years to just come to know that the songs I hear often fall under Mohanam. I would like to know more about this raga (or ragas in general).
Can you suggest me a book that covers the basics and goes into details about them ? Internet source has limited autenticity and I always go by books which are researched and explained by authors who have authority over a particular field/subject.

RR

mappi,

For basics I think wiki is ok. If you really want a book, Raga nidhi (B Subba rao) is considered quite authoritative. But this is just the theory of it. The real raga beauty can, of course, be understood only by listening to various compositions and renditions.

Lakshman and others may have better book recommendations.

I came across this site : http://www.chembur.com/carnatic/
There are list of books in there, think I will start with author Rao.

Here is a song I listen to often (eventhough, I do not understand it completely, I am usually awstuck with it. I listen to it basicially for the tabla beats/rythms).
From 3m23s, the way she vibrates her voice is mesmerising, what is the term for such voice modulation in Carnatic/Hindustani music ?
