HOW CAN WE SAY NO TO THE CALL OF THE HILLS?

Peerumedu is located 50 km from Kottayam and 3500 ft above the sea level. It is a quite summer resort, offering a delightful climate.

Name: Peerumedu means the Hill of the Pir. Long time ago there lived a saintly Muslim Pir, respected by people of all creeds. His tomb may be seen at Kuttikanam, four miles from Peerumedu.

Game Sanctuaries

The Periyar Lake and the Royal Game Sanctuary are only a few miles form Peerumedu. The Lake has been formed by putting a dam across the Periyar and covers an area of many square miles. The waters are led through a one mile tunnel bored through the Western Ghats, to irrigate acres of wet land.

From Peerumedu the visitor can proceed to Thekkadi on the Periyar Lake where boat can be had for pleasure cruises on the Lake. The Lake lies in a cup of the hills, a magnificent sheet of water, surrounded by towering heights clothed with thick forests. The Game sanctuary is on the shores of the Lake. One can often find elephants, bison, deer, and other specimen of wild life disporting in their natural habitat on the shore, or coming down to the waters edge to drink. The entire catchments area of the Lake, that is about 160 square miles, has been set apart for the Game Sanctuary.

It is significant in the archeological and anthropological point of view. Excavations at Thangakkal near Vandi Periyar, resulted in the discovery of large dolmens, cromlechs, menhirs which were a great revelation on the burial customs of prehistoric races in South India.

You mean they allow you to hunt for elephants and other game at the "game sanctuary"? I thought the Govt of India has banned hunting long ago..!

Does that mean that the members of the royalty can hunt? No they are also prohibited. High time they changed the name of the sanctuary.
