Best Picturisation/Choreography

Technological advances have been best made to use in Tamil films. Generally, it is accepted that Tamil films are miles ahead at least in terms of technology, when compared with films of other languages. The trend of having group dancers accompanying the lead pair in overseas locations continued into 2006 and is expected to also remain so in 2007!

Hubbers picks this time were:

Chithiram Pesuthadi's immensely popular vaala meenukkum
Dishyum's soulful nenjangootil neeyE nirkkiraai
Parijatham - unnai kandEnE
Sillunu oru Kaathal's new york nagaram
Vallavan's hip hop loosu penne
Varalaaru - innisai alabadaiye and kaatril
Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu - title song karkka karkka and manjal veyyil
Veyyil - GV Prakash's awesome entry of veyilOdu vilaiyaadi

So what captured our Hubbers imagination?

'Vaala meenukkum' turned out to be a disaster (3%), and 'Loosu penne' could muster only 8%.

Only 5 songs got vote percentage in double digits. Notable among them was the upset 'New york nagaram' (11% votes) - audience were obviously not too impressed with the picturisation! 'Veyyilodu' (veyil) also had 11%. The surprise third comer was 'unnai kandene' from Paarijaatham.. Looks like all the lakhs that went into the CG and all were well worth it!

The contest finally came to between the two tamil ilakkiya songs: "Karka Karka" (VV) and "Innisai alabedaiye" (GF)...

And the winner is:

Best Lyricist

Millions throughout the world are linked together in this forum through their love for Tamil songs. What are songs if not sheer poetry. Tamil Filmdom has produced just not lyricists (paadalaasariyar) but amazing poets (kavignar) too.

And what a feast they provided us throughoout 2006.
Kudos to Vaali, Vairamuthu, Muthulingam, Mu Metha, Arivumathi, Pazhani Bharathi, Pa Vijay, Na Muthukumar, Thamarai, and many others.

In the running for THE Lyricist of the year, we have veterans like Vaali and Vairamuthu and also Naa. Muthukumar. Thaamarai, a favourite of Gowtham Menon is also in the race, while the surprise newcomer is none other than Silambarasan for his creation of loosu pennE.

With so many lyricists and thousands of songs, who will be the Lyricist of the year?

Best Female Singer

As far as 2006 is concerned, established singers such as Chitra and Anuradha Sriram hardly sang enough songs to merit interest. Hindi singers Shreya Ghosal and Sadhana Sargam gained stronger foothold in Tamil film. Many new voices like Sangeetha (dailamO), Sonu Karkar (dhinam dhinam deepavali) and Sunidhi Chauhan (vallava ennai vellavaa) continued to grace Tamil cinema.

The big question, of course is who will win this coveted award.

There were two groups, the 'S' group (Sadhna,Sangeetha,Shreya,...,Swarnalatha - 7 of them!) and the 'non-S' (3) group that were trying to edge each other out. But it was not to be a close contest. The 'S' group led outright. What's worse was, Harini in the non-S group didn't get a single vote..! (hey Harini-nominator, who did you vote for? :) )

And, the winner..

Album of the Year 2006

Compared to the olden days, the music album of a movie plays a vital role in promoting and the business of a movie. With audio CDs,TV, Internet and FM radios, the reach of the music albums are huge compared to olden days which purely depended on few Radios and gramaphone discs.

The number of music directors and new comers are higher than in the olden days. But compared to previous years, 2006 had not many music blockbusters, where all the songs in a movie became super hits. Still, a few albums were received by audience with great enthusiasm.

Yuvan SR had 3 hits in his account. Pattiyal (Namma Kattula etc) , Pudupettai ( Most of the songs are hits) and Vallavan with loosu penne, which was huge hit even among kids.

Vijay Antony's Dishum had atleast two superhit songs Dailamo and Nenjangkoottil.

Karthick Raja 's Manathodu MazhaiKaalam and Vidyasakar's Thambi are partially hits with some good melodies.

Very young talent GV Prakash caught the attention of music lovers with Veyil . Uruguthe is one of the best melodies of the year.

Harris Jayaraj's Vettaiyadu Vilayadu had a variety of songs: Partha Muthal Naale was an instant hit. Manjal Veyil and Chikki mukki neruppe also became audience picks.

Isai Puyal ARR came with 2 hit albums. Sillunu oru Kaathal with songs new york, munbE vaa etc well received more than the movie. Varalaru , a Super hit movie of year 2006 came with few hits innisai alabadaiyE, theeyil vizhundha, though ARR's usual punch was missing.

Album of the Year 2006 goes to...

The washouts for the album for the year 2006 were Dishyum (Vijay Antony) and Manadhodu Mazhaikkaalam (Karthik Raja). Wonder who the hubbers who nominated them voted for.

Veyil (GV Prakash), Thambi (Vidyasagar) and Vallavan (Yuvan SR) did not impress our Hubbers very much.

The remaining albums in contention are: Pattiyal (Yuvan SR), Pudhupettai (Yuvan SR), Sillunu oru Kaathal (AR Rahman), Varalaaru (AR Rahman) and Vettaiyadu Villaiyadu (Harris Jayaraj)

Pattiyal was slightly better at 13%, with Vettaiyadu Villaiyadu being runners up at 17% .

Sillunu oru Kaathal, which didn't do well at the BO, was stupendous as far as the album was concerned and received a whopping 40% of the votes!

AR Rahman has indeed captured the audience in 2006!

Nenjaankoottil and Unnai Kandene were washouts for this category. Vaala meenukkum - hugely popular not long ago - was pushed to the bottom of the charts for the award!
Sharing space there were Innisai Alabedaiye & Manjal Veyyil .

The contest was then just among a chosen few: Loosu Penne, Munbe Vaa, New york nagaram, Oru naalil and Paartha mudhal naale

and the SONG OF THE YEAR is....

6th February 2007, 11:21 AM
It is now time to get to the Best Music director of the Year 2006. 2006 was quite good with handful of effective albums.
But is that enough to decide the Best Music.
Let us see..

The nominees are....

1. Vijay Antony(Dishoom). He had made already a slight impact with Sukran. But Dailamo song made him more popualar
among youth. Also the song Nenjaankootil. Beautiful melody. But is that enough to select him as best MD.. Let us see...

2. Karthik Raaja.(Manathodu Mazhaikalam,Naalai) -- IR's elder son.. Was in his peak during Kathala, Naam iruvar and Namakku Iruvar time.
But gradually went down in the later years. Once again back last year with 2 good movies. Let us see where he stands.

3. GV Prakash (Veyil).. Made a very big impact in his very first movie itself.. Uruguthae song is still pouring our ears.. Nephew of AR Rehman
is now contesting along with ARR itself..

4. AR Rahman (Varalaru, Sillendre Oru Kaathal) --- Among actors, If we say Rajini a kind of energy will fill us. The same way ARR in Tamil
Music.. 4 national awards and 16 Filmfare awards(9 in South indian movies). Let us see now if he is deserved to be this year's Top MD.

5. Vidyasagar (Thambi,POI, Emtan Magan, Sivapathigaram) --- National award winner for the year 2005. He is a master in evergreen classic "Nee Kaatru" to
fast numbers like "Appadi Poadu" .. Is he the best MD of 2006 ?????

6. Yuvan Shankar Raja(Vallavan,Pudhupettai, pattiyal) --- Loosu pennae is still being heard among youth. IR younger son is one among the TOP MD now..
Came to this profession at very young age but did not fail to deliver. He had Won The Ciff Award for Best Musical Score for the Film Raam .. Will he ????

7. Devisri Prasad (Unakkum Enakkum) --- Not only a MD, a very active dancer too if u would have seen him in the stage... Started his film career with Telugu films and now
doing Tamil films too which is good for us.. 2 Times filmfare award winner. Will he get the hub award?

8. Joshua Sridhar (Uyir,Chennai Kaadhal) ----- An Young talented MD who made an impression with movie Kaathal had given 2 beautiful albums. Will he be the one?

9. Harris Jayaraj (Vettaiyadu Villaiyadu) ----- Started Music career as MD for the film Minnalae. From that point every year he would come with one big album. Last year it was VV. His future releases include Pachaikili Muthucharam, Vaaranam Aayiram, Bheema.. Is he the best MD of 2006.

Stay tuned.. The award is going to be announced in few hours................

Looks like the hubbers recognized essentially three MD's for the contest. The rest of the 7 nominations lacked far behind with 1% or less votes..! The leading three were of course

AR Rahman
Harris Jayaraj
Yuvan Shankar Raja

Can Yuvan make a hat trick in Hub awards? Or, Will it be AR Rahman this year? Or will Harris Jeyaraj outsmart both and VVin?

The three TFM "visionaries" of 2005 are 1. 2. 3...... Good show, guys!

But the prize has to go only one and so a tie breaker applies. We have chosen the hubber who posted the predictions the earliest (and hence may have "influenced" others).

So the award goes to the earlybird...

TFM Hubber Award: Results

Several hubbers had predicted the following 5 awards: Song of the year, Album of the year, Best Music Director, Best Playback Singer - Female, Best Lyricist, fairly easily. The "Best Playback Singer - Male", "Best Picturisation / Choreography" proved to be ones many faltered on. ARR (as singer) and Innisai (picturisation) proved to be dark horses :) We scored the nominations in the order predicted, i.e. the first nomination was taken as the prediction. Second/third were considered only if the final score resulted in a tie. We didn't have to resort to it in this category. There was a clear winner.

The hubber who got the best score is..
