I was wondering why there was no thread for this man. Now i have started one for him.

One of my favourite Raghuvarn's character is:

Chidambaram - From "samsaram adhu minsaram"

The way he says, "mister ammayappan" the whole scene between visu & raghuvarn is fantastic

not in particular.... but somewhere here & there....

but i would rate his family oriented roles as best ones, like:

samsaram adhu minsaram
mugavari
aaha

but he would be one among the best villains of tamil cinema

Bhavani in RGV's debut film: Shiva (dubbed as Udayam in Tamil).
In one great scene, Raghuvaran is sitting in a chair after being berated by his boss. You can see he is fuming with anger and humiliation. An underling walks in and asks for some money. Raghuvaran gets up from his chair and slaps him in one action. Powerful

Looking at the films of Kamal in past decade not sure which role Raghuvaran should have suited.

Even prakashraj very recently acted with Kamal(VR and VV).

Raghuvaran's drug addict may be a reason too :?

To the point the one scene which i will remember of Raghuvaran always is the story telling scene in Mugavari. So Natural

Yes, Raguvaran is a senior officer, who knows who the Narasimma is (another police officer but for others a terrorist like man, as in vetrivizha kamal)... Nasser & Anandaraj are sincere officers who donno about this but try to catch the Narasimma... idhula 1 or 2 combinationla varuvanga....

I dont think he over act, besides, he introduced a different style of villanism(Italian Mafia kind of look), without his 'Meesai' he should have acted as a hero with his good looks, but shame he cant dance or fight, cos unfortunatley Indian Cinem relies heavily on this DUMB things!!!

what about 'Amarkalam' ?? as Shalini's father, he out performed Ajith in every way and stole the film...

there was one movie, he acted as Surya's brother, an ill minded brother , excellent performance

Raghu,
In that film, performance from most of the characters were good. Radhika performed well even in that little role. Raghuvaran did a good job during his conversation with Nasser. Nasser was just a filler in that movie along with others.
Ultimately, it was Ajith & Shalini who stole everyone's heart

I think it was the least memorable out of all the Surya-Jo movies. Although Raghuvaran pitched in with an excellent performance, his being the child of Radhika was hard to digest. He didn't suit the role, but performed very well, especially in the last court scene or whenever he explains what motivated him to go against his brother.

Powerful

Just caught this thread, and I was about to post this. absolutely agree. This film also has the reasons why one couldn't stand him in Baasha. (IMHO)

I also agree with CR on the hero of this film, Ilaiyaraja. But let's not forget RGV. The sequences were brilliantly captured, and he extracted the apt background score. Incidentally, Raghuvaran got his own motif track. One more vicious scene in the film, with Raghuvaran(Bhavani) taking his belt out to choke Kota Srinivasa Rao in a fit of rage! As he takes his life away, Bhavani's eyes bulges out with a gratifying grin, that you just know it's (personally) purposive for Bhavani to Gnaw this guy out.

Contrastingly, he followed it up with Shekar of Anjali next year! And he pulled it off (I know, I'm being a bit too careful here, but nonetheless a convincing father role from Mani)..

Though I wouldn't expect nuances from him, I'm a fan of his understated qualities. If it lacked, he would get a bit too excited, like in Puriyadha pudhir or Mudhalvan (though a bit comical here, he tries to render a corrupt old coot of a politician), though I've enjoyed these films. I like the casual avatars like Ullasam, Mugavari more. He used to be a Fazil favorite with two strong roles, En Bommukutty Ammavukku saw him sport a reasonable husband in search of her kid, to its opposite, the rich slimeball after the kid in Poovizhi Vasalile

Regarding Kamal's indifference to Raghuvaran. a) Could be because he's no fan of his acting.

kaNNukkuL nilavu wasn't bad really. Some typically farcical comedy tracks aside, there are quite a few genuinely good moments in the film. Songs are, of course, just lovely in the film. There are many glimpses of the superb actress in Shalini, and the Fazil who made pUvizhi vAsalilE. This is our only 'decent' attempt at, ahem, a psychological thriller, guys, otherwise, we have only Ghajini to boot!

Yeah, true, and I suggest you revisit 'kaNNukkuL nilavu.' Fazil picks up the basic premise of 'Memento', it's really worth a watch. And, I agree with Selvakumar, I think Vijay is not bad at all in the film (and that's saying a lot). There are some genuinely thrilling moments towards the end of the film. It's Fazil, often thought of to be sweet and mellow, who also made one of the best thrillers (I'm talking about 'pUvizhi vAsalilE' here) in Tamil cinema. Here too, he doesn't let you down, not completely.

I've not seen 'Julie Ganapathi.' I probably should. But, 'mUdupani', I thought, was hardly thrilling. Balu Mahendra turns 'Psycho' into maudlin melodrama. (I've NO idea why it's revealed that Pratap's mom is actually dead much early in the film. What was that, a stab at "neo-realistic thriller" genre?) There's a single shot that runs for minutes in the film when the policeman uncle of Pratap looks for him in his estate bungalow which has always struck me as so well crafted, but so dull and useless. But for Raaja's brilliant Herrmann-like score and god-awesome songs (anyone heard the less-heard discotheque song 'Sing Swing'?), there's not much to savour here.

It's Fazil, often thought of to be sweet and mellow, who also made one of the best thrillers (I'm talking about 'pUvizhi vAsalilE' here) in Tamil cinema. Here too, he doesn't let you down, not completely.

I'll try to watch the film again. I remember the climax et all, but the film was boring. Though I wasn't all that attentive back then :D

I've not seen 'Julie Ganapathi.' I probably should.

I liked JG. It's a worthy adaptation. Check it out! :)

Yeah, I don't remember the film all that all. But I remember Shoba to be natural (how I wish I could use that word at any actress today), Raaja's score (yes, I also analogize his score as Herrmann-like for this film) and songs!

I remember that song too,
s(w)ing with me now
i'll show you how
Some really "funky" music. Rhythmic riffs from start to finish! Must have been a sensation for the time. :D

There's a long awfully boring comedy track (the ever-irritating Charlie and Dhaamu, constants in Fazil films, and Madan Bob), so you're sufficiently warned. :) The introductory scenes where we slowly realise that Vijay is a "gaan-case," without things being spelt out loud and clear to us with a hammer, the entry of Sri Vidya and her scenes with Vijay and Shalini, and the portrayal of Raghuvaran-Shalini relationship are all rather well done.

avar Udhadu kooda nadikkum thiran kondulladhu ..... ena oru miga periya nadigaraleye paaraata pattavar :-)

Hes simply a wonderful character artiste ... i really cherish his performance in Samsaaram adhu Minsaaram ..... he was really like a chosen one for that character .... a very simple actor - but a great deliverer .... !

Mark Antony - many would remember him by this name only :-) hes so very famous on this name ....

Love Today was one of the best movies for Raghuvaran i would vouch for ! Though he has acted in a lot of movies as a villian ... he is best suited for this role these days ! even Ahaa movie was a good one for Raghuvaran !

these were some roles which he performed apart from acting as a villian !

Raghuvaran is one of the finest actors that Tamil cinema has produced. Hero, villain, character role - you name it. He does with aplomb and perfection. Even in small cameo roles he leaves an inimitable impression on the screen.

It's unfortunate that such a gifted actor like Raghuvaran has not acted in a single movie with Aandavar! :(

Apart from the irritating comedy track, a film of this genre could have done without it because all it served as was a distraction, this movie was not bad. And I'm not just saying that for Vijay. Although his performance cannot be deemed as amazing, it was not bad considering the roles that he is used to performing. His performance did have some noteworthy scenes like the end when he loses control and his various child-like tantrums. His scenes with Shalini were all immensely sweet (esp when Shalini tells him to be with her and his immediate shyness then hesitation) and SriVidya also lent amazing supporting. Raghuvaran wasn't as prevalent in this movie, but nevertheless the relationship between him and Hema regarding Vijay was depicted well. All this coupled with Ilayaraja's amazing music and bgm make this movie worth a watch. :)

Very well summarised !! And yes, to me the movie is worth a watch for all the above reasons mentioned. Vijay to me was good considering even the movies he has done after kaNNukkuL nilavu. Raguvran did a good job as a caring, loving and understanding father of Shalini.

The telugu original story by Selva seems good, so I think this film should be good with a significant role for the father character that Raghuvaran plays. Regarding Kamal's indifference to Raghuvaran. a) Could be because he's no fan of his acting.

Nasser has acted with Raghuvaran in other movies too. There are two Arjun starrers which come to my mind.

Probably no artist can go into hibernation time and again and bounce back like Raghuvaran has. The actor has done it at least thrice. “Yes! I often do a turn and turn about. Rajinikanth keeps asking me about it,” he guffaws, as you sit do wn for a chat in the greenery of the porch in his home in T. Nagar, Chennai. “I have to give my all to the role I play. And when I feel I can’t, I opt out. Once I even decided to renounce the world. So it was long robes, rudraksha et al.” Today the versatile actor is an indisputable value-addition to films, big and small. What does he attribute it to? “God,” he says simply.

Every moment of the meet with the veteran is a rewarding experience as myriad telling emotions crisscross his visage despite the shades over his eyes — quiet and serious one minute, voluble and laughing the next.
Cinema and life

After a short silence he looks you straight in the eye and says: “Acting is like puking! I take two days to come out of a character, and two more days to get into another. That’s the problem with me. See, because you told me you were coming over to meet me I’ve cancelled today’s dubbing for ‘Yaaradi Nee Mohini.’ I have to think and field your posers honestly. I can’t, if I have another commitment after this.” You can only gape at him perplexed! “Now I’ve given my life to cinema. You see the caravan there. That’s where I am most of the time, doing homework for my roles and listening to stories.”

Are his ideas accepted by the director? “He gives me a hearing and then decides. After all he’s the chief,” notes Raghuvaran. The conversation steers towards the famous, “I know” dialogue in ‘Puriyadha Pudhir,’ which he utters again and again in a scene lending a different expression to the phrase each time. “I’m indebted to director K.S.Ravikumar for it. He had given me four pages of dialogue. I suggested we could do it differently and after much deliberation I came up with the words,” smiles Raghuvaran.

He vibes well with heroes Rajini, Ajith, Vijay and Vikram. And he’s all praise for Dhanush, his ‘son’ in ‘Yaaradi Nee Mohini.’ He acts out the scene he had dubbed for, the previous day. “Nayantara slaps me. Dhanush warns her and pulls me away. While dubbing for the scene I really felt a bonding with Dhanush,” he says. How many takes did it involve? “Six!” Did Nayan really slap him? “Yeah! She really did!” The candour makes you smile.

He had always wanted to be an actor but not a hero. “A lead role has limitations, my characters don’t,” he says. “In Rajeshwar’s ‘Indra Vizha’ I’m back to my ‘Baasha’ kind of role. And I loved my part in ‘Bheema.’” Raghuvaran has significant parts to play in ‘Kandasamy,’ ‘Sila Nerangalil’ and ‘Ellam Avan Seyal.’

Again breaking the norm that once you work on the small screen it’s impossible to find a foothold in films, Raghuvaran did Sivasankari’s ‘Oru Manidhanin Kadhai’ — the story of an alcoholic — in the early years of his career. And only rarely do you see him talk to the media, visual or print! The man’s niche is safe and secure without any effort from his side!

He also does many first-time directors’ films. “Every assistant dreams of making it as director. When he comes to me with a role he says he has created with me in mind, I don’t have the heart to send him back disappointed.” The goodwill speaks volumes about Raghuvaran’s nature.

What about your mood swings? “How do you know?” is the repartee. “You are right. But I feel most artists do. That’s why it is better that my son Sai Rishi is growing up with his mother … Do you know I’m divorced? But Rishi comes over very often. He even has a set of his school uniform here. In fact despite my divorce from Rohini the three of us enjoy a very good relationship.”

Raghuvaran has worked with Amitabh Bachchan in ‘Lal Badsha.’ “I’ve also played Dilip Kumar’s son-in-law in Hindi. Madhuri Dixit was the daughter.” But he’s done just three Hindi films so far … “Here, in 10 days I finish a role and go on to the next. But it’s not possible there,” he says. The actor also works in Kannada, Malayalam and Telugu films.
His pastime

“Music. It’s more a passion, though I’m an avid reader too. I began playing the guitar when I was eight. I have a music room where I compose.” It’s a revelation! “Yeah! I hardly talk about it,” he says. Raghuvaran has passed Grade II in piano at the Trinity College of Music, which is headquartered in London and conducts its exams here. “A real musician should be able to notate. I can. When I left Coimbatore for Chennai to try my luck in acting, I had the confidence that if need arises I could earn playing my guitar.” The actor has 30 compositions of his own. “I can easily pull out 10 and make an album. But that isn’t my aim. I just want to keep in touch with music. I plan to take the Grade III exam soon.”

How many more talents of the man remain hidden, you wonder![/tscii:9d5268a1c0]

Just saw Aahaa yesterday. Nice portrayal as elder son of a family. Climax was well set . Raghuvaran explaining to wife Banupriya on his earlier life . All ends well.

The man is remembered for his "I Know" dialogue ..... he is a brilliant artiste .... acknowledged for his amazing portrayal in villian characters ....
yeah... the way he repeats the dialogue " I KNOW" in different modulations, excellent...
also his acting in poovizhi vasalile worth mentioning.... when he shows the pencil drawing of the villain drawn by jeeva (sathyaraj) and says "appadiye achu adicha madhiri varanju irukkan" his expressions are wonderful...

Recently watched a film called "Kai naattu", Good performance by Raghuvaran. Those days "Madhuri" was a regular in Raghuvaran's films!
