I think Puthiya Mugam album is overrating here. IMO, it has only two very good songs (Kannukku Mai Azhagu and Netru Illatha Matram) and a good/average song (July Matham Vanthal) and a below average song (Sambo Sambo)

Any other songs?

imo, ARR has adapted the styles of MSV/IR and ofcourse his own style in pudhiya mugam. kanukku mai azhagu (MSV style), sambo sambo (IR style) and ofcourse naetry ilatha (his own). a very unique album with one legend paying tribute to two other legends in TFM.

How would you expect me to list then? Did you read what thineshan meant? The difficulty in sidelining ARR's album to worst categories. I was curious to know how many of them feel that ARR has letdown totally. There is a wide difference to categorize ARR's album from average to worst categories.

Dont just post rubbish for the sake of arguements. Your attempt is nothing but to lend a hand to encourage hypocrites.

Thineshan,

I appreciate your humour sense & audacity . ..

Alli Arjuna doesnt fit in to the category since it has got all dubbed songs. Few of them are really good even while dubbed. I think most of them will easily rate Parasuram as the worst album of ARR. I dont remember exactly when I listened to it. Though it has some genuine reason behind the production Its ARR album and we need to admit it fairly.

I am still wondering how the majority would rate Vandicholai Chinrasu, Udhaya, paarthale paravasam as an album in whole...

parthale paravasam is a totally underated album. its got amazing songs/experimentation. if u take into account the time lag for udhaya and imagine it came out in 1997 then thats also a great album (especially pookum malarum and udhaya title song). let me listen to VC (been a while).

Vandicholai Chinrasu - I love 4 Songs from this movie.Chithirai Nilavu and Senthamizh are some of my all-time favourites. So i wud eliminate this one

Udhaya - I wud infact rate this as one of his best. This is far better than ATM. Just becoz the movie was pathetic and this album went unnoticed, we shudn't discard this album as one of the worsts. I still listen to Pookum malargal and Udaya Udaya.

paarthale paravasam - This one has an everlasting melody. I think that his enough to remove this album from this list. Even then other songs aren't bad. Raathiriyin sonthakaarra was a big hit then.

So still Parasuraam is the only album so far in my list of worst albums.

:notthatway: New, Aa Aah and Godfather are really good albums. But i wasn't very impressed with Baba's soundtrack. So i wud add baba to Parasuram. In Hindi, Daud is an album which never really impressed me. And of course Lakeer.

Parasuram had "Kaadhal vettikili" song.. which was quite an innovative composition.. haven't heard other songs in the album, though.

That song is one in my top list of ARR songs.

May be it came in a period where ARR films as such were not doing well such as KKS, KV, E20U18, etc.

VC- is a good album

Udhaya i like around 3 songs in this album

PP- interesting album.

I wouldn't rate these as his worst.

To me if there was a worst album it would be Shivaji,Parasuram and Star

Shivaji- other than Athiradi and BOSS the other songs were repetitive and not the ARR. Basically an overrated album

Parasuram I like only Dolna.

Star- just OKAY

These are the only albums I can think of.

pay particular attention to vaaji vaaji, style, and sahana.

vaaji vaaji - the orchestration in this song is spellbounding, with the initial string section and the oriental drills leading to a powerpacked vocal performance by both hariharan and madushree (the melody that madushree sings is just wonderful)

sahana - the melody is top class. the song is based on a carnatic raga sahana (sahana in sahana), but arr takes things a bit further when he improvises another totally diff raga for the saranam. the orchestration is also unique with stacatto beats and ofcourse the mrdanga rhythms perfectly in sync with the western beats.

style - the most innovative song ihave ever heard from rahman. no one orchestrates like this. what seems like a slow song at first picks up speed (i say speed triples) and ofcourse the electrifying metal pads making it sound so powerful. i say style song is full of Rahman's style which perfectly portrays the style of Rajni

athiradee u have already mentioned.

imo, sivaji is one of the best albums coming out of shankar and ARR.

[tscii:b4823ee634]We need to exclude Lakeer, Star etc and other identicals like I held before for the reason of dubbed songs whereas originals are really good. It was the demand or non-availability made the producers/directors to pick songs from ARR collections.

Marthi, I had Sivaji in my mind as well , certainly an overrated album. The songs didn’t gel with the movie anywhere script itself a collasal mess. Maltreatment of Superstar for a "Boys" hangover is pathetic and It has certainly failed to withstand the expectations. IMO, Biggest disappointment in TFI.

thineshan, we shud not expect everyone to dwell deep to analyze ARR's, string orchestration, usage of metal pads, interludes, vocals alone as a positive measure. On a general perspective how does the album fare even songwise? A particular genre/song may not be liked by all like "oru koodai" "Athiradi" "style" thats different but the album is chock-full.

Good one! Lets see what others had to say..

YES! Sivaji is one of his top albums, it shouldn't even be considered for this worst albums list. There is no musical knowledge needed to apprecite these songs. Each one is different, innovative and serves its purpose well in the film. Vaaji Vaaji, Sahana and Style are spectacular songs. The only average song in Sivaji this was Balleileka.

are you trying to be sarcastic to what I said ?

The melodies are NOT the one's we've had from ARR.... If you listen to vaaji vaaji or sahaana right after munbe vaa or some other melody of your choice then you'd be able to notice the difference. it does not have the same Quality like other albums. Just because the album became a hit doesn't mean the songs were good. It's not appealing. It's no where near the Rahman standards.

how can u people ever say Sivaji album was a dissapointment...i really dun get it... wut more better songs u need in an album???

Sahana - Beautiful melody with excellent interludes/perludes... not to mention and excellent ending of the song...

Vaaji - Peppy number with indianized tune. Loved the "aambal...aambal" chant which comes during the starting & ending of the song... not to mention excellent interludes...very rich...

Athiradi - beats were strong, excellent chat of " Sanja...manja..."..the tune of this whole song is very catchy...

Style - Wow.... wut a very modern number... its so tough to listen to this kinda songs in Tamil industry, why even in Indian Film Music industry. its one of a kind.... loved the "Aaeyo Aeyo...Lets throw the fido" bit... and loved the beats that pick up after the charanam... and wut a creative ending.... very lively & youthful...

Balleilaka - Ok...this is probably the most simple song. Nothing really extraodinare bout this song, even the picturisation. The lyrics & SPB's voice were the only interesting in the song IMO. Rehana some parts she sounds nice, and some annoying. Music beats were 'heard it b4"....

4/5..... thats like WOW...... and people can complain.... tsk tsk tsk...

New is a very good album to me. The songs were chartbusters right from the day it got released if i am not wrong.

GF is a very good album as well. I liked the songs from GF in this order
1) Innisai alabadai (Pure Class. Infact i voted as song of the year and i was listening to them often before/after GF release) 8-).
2) Ilamai original and remix
3) Theeyil vizhuntha
4) Kaatril oru
5) Thothapuram and kamma karayil aren't bad either.
I think they both are good albums 8-).

godfather and New are atleast above average albums.. cant classify them as bad..

baba has atleast 2 good songs.. and this movie has some good BGMs too..

[tscii:a923ec7159]We need to exclude Lakeer, Star etc and other identicals like I held before for the reason of dubbed songs whereas originals are really good.

[/tscii:a923ec7159]

are you trying to be sarcastic to what I said ?

The melodies are NOT the one's we've had from ARR.... If you listen to vaaji vaaji or sahaana right after munbe vaa or some other melody of your choice then you'd be able to notice the difference. it does not have the same Quality like other albums. Just because the album became a hit doesn't mean the songs were good. It's not appealing. It's no where near the Rahman standards.

so even you know how silly it sounds to say sivaji is in worst list, thats the whole reason why you thought he was being sarcastic when he wasn't. keep it up!

Ok Guys, opinions differ. Good to have different opinions and glad to note many of them liked it.

From Sanjeevi list, Does Udhaya/Baba are that bad? What do you guys say?

Definitely Baba is not bad album, since it was not upto Rajni album standard I listed it but I liked Maya Maya song much and Baba Kichu thaa a little bit. Ofcourse I hate Dippu Dippu Kumara top to bottom. When taking Udhaya, again I go with public opinion despite it has one or more good songs. However a weak album of ARR will beat a best album of any 2nd/3rd grade MD :)

My list, based on:

- Innovativeness
- Memories associated with the album. The main reason why Kaadhalan beats Roja in my list!
- The album as a whole
- Picturisation (I think this does play role, even if it is subconsiously)
- Play count (on my computer!)

1.Kaadhalan
2. Roja
3. Minsara Kanavu
4. Jeans
5. Bombay
6. Mudhalvan
7. Kandukondain Kandukondain
8. Alaipayuthey
9. Uyire
10. Alagiya Thamil Magan

I decided not to give any albums joint positions! Some of the other contenders were:

Kadhalar Dhinam
Sangamam
Padayappa
Ah Aah
Duet
Taj Mahal
Sivaji
Iruvar
May Madham
Duet
Rhythm
Mr. Romeo
Ayutha Eluthu
Ratchagan
Sillunu Oru Kaathal
Boys
Karuthamma
Kangalal Kaithi Sei
Love Birds

Really thought long and hard about the number 10 position more than anything. I decided on ATM, optimistic that this will stand the test of time and remain a great album in years to come.

I also agree that ATM is one of ARR's best in the last 5 years especially in Tamil music. There was too much pressure for ARR to do Sivaji. I'm still listening to ATM. I'm not saying that Sivaji is not good but ATM reminded me the good old days of Kadhal Desam, May Madham, Mudhalvan, etc.

I vaguely remember Kadhal Virus - it was released before or after Boys? I didn't like the Mano song. I also hated that Simbu sang a track on the album. After Kadhal Dhesam and Kadhalir Dhinam - I was expecting a lot from Kadhir and ARR but it was disappointing for me personally.

For me Thiruda Thiruda will always be the album that made me an ARR-Fanatic since 1993. I liked Roja, Asogan, Gentleman, Puthiya Mugam but it was Thiruda Thiruda that made all the difference for me. The album was huge in Malaysia - I think Warner Malaysia gave ARR a gold disc or something for high sales. Tony Fernandez - the current CEO of AirAsia who was the director of Warner Malaysia in 1993 said that ARR single-handedly revitalized the music industry of Tamil with that album especially in Malaysia. I lost my MagnaSound CD that had Thiruda Thiruda/Puthiya Mugam combo:(

Its apparent ATM, Kadhal Virus, Pukar does have customary mediocre stuffs but cannot discard it completely. There are good songs in it.

To rate ARR's Best/ *worst* is the most <spine-tingling> task and I have failed inconsolably several times. That’s why I feel there is a wide spectrum of difference to classify ARR's works. Its shows the amount of effort he put forth to maintain consistency. Keep going!

I think Pukar was released late in 1999. The reason I didn't have fond memories of Pukar was because of Kay Sera Sera - the song from ESK. The song was the intro for Madhuri Dixit and ARR had to reuse a Tamil song. Ek Tu Hi Bharosa was also another song reused from a concert in Malaysia. Was this the second song that Lata Mangeshkar sang for ARR after Dil Se?

For the Top 10, I try to choose the albums that all or almost all (at least 80%) of the songs created an impact on me. The album that can stand on its own.

I remember when I listened to Gangmaster/Manitha Manitha in 1995 - I was so disappointed - I was expecting another Super Police but as a collection of tracks - Gangmaster is quite OK though not everyone might like it or remember it compared to ARR's other albums.

I personally think that Sivaji is ARR's best commercial work to date. I agree with you on the Sahana sad version. But my pick was Athiradee. I was never fond of fast numbers except if done by ARR of course. In these days of mindless kuthu songs, Athiradee was refreshing with ARR's masterclass singing.

IMO, there is no bad ARR album as every one of his work stands out for its uniqueness.

I was trying to listen to all of them collectively for a long time and just listed them not in any particular order. Got much more excited and checked Gopals' ARR discography (http://members.tripod.com/gopalhome/arrdisc.html) and stumbled upon the other instrumentals, jingles, others etc. It seams that he composed more than 200 jingles and we could find only few of them
