Vijay TV will be the first Indian TV channel to have a transgender anchor for a talk show, titled 'Ippadikku Rose'.

K Sriram, head, Vijay TV, said Rose, a transgender person, would deal with current affairs touching a wide variety of social issues including traditions, taboos, rebels and culture.

Rose is a former student of Satyabhama Engineering College who later did higher studies in the US for over three years before returning to Chennai. She is now working for an NGO.

Vijay TV had always come out with innovative and creative concepts like 'Kadhaiyalla Nijam' through its talk shows and current affairs programmes, Sriram said, adding that 'Ippadikku Rose' would be a first-of-its kind talk show. It would be aired during the weekends beginning sometime in December and would be on once a week.

Initially, the programme would have a studio audience comprising largely of youths from colleges. Later, questions from viewers would be included, Sriram said.

Rose said she hoped that the misconceptions in society about transgenders would be cleared through her show. It was not a show about transgenders though it may also deal with issues including homsexuality and transgenders but essentially she would just be another TV anchor.

"I will deal with issues honestly and transparently," she said.

Talking about herself, Rose said she decided to "come out" from being a man since she felt that urge for long. After completing her studies, she decided to announce the change but had to face oppression from family and friends too for her decision.

She thanked Vijay TV for reposing faith in her and entrusting the job of a show anchor. The show would deal with thousands of problems and social issues, she added.

Dr Jaya Lakshmi Shreedhar, founder of Centre for Security Analysis, said she was glad to be of assistance to Rose in projecting herself as a professional and show anchor. "She is intelligent, articulate and well-informed. I am sure she will be successful as an anchor," Jaya added.

Pradeep Milroy Peter, head of programming, Vijay TV, said the show would be a late night programme so that families could watch them. Each episode would deal with a topic on a social issue.

I love to watch ipaddikku Rose not just because it's a good talk show but because it's a talk show by a transgender. In india we've been cursing this one race to the core and actually treated them like animals/cannibals. This show will really help to eradicate the wrong impression about transgenders in general. Kudos to Vijay TV for bringing up such programs and I really appreciate their creativity in doing the same.
