Rahman's new love

Prithwish Ganguly / DNA

Mumbai: Double Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman, who has displayed his fetish for using new sounds in his compositions thereby surprising his fans as well as the industry, is using a brand new technology developed in the United States in his songs.

A source close to Rahman tells us that Mozart of Madras is currently specialising in the use of a brand new instrument called the Continuum Fingerboard. He thus becomes the only man in Indian cinema to use the musical device that's been developed by the University of Illinois.

Rahman has apparently got inspired to use this instrument after he listened to the compositions on the Continuum by John Williams who scored for Steven Spielberg's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

The insider reveals, "Continuum Fingerboard is like a synthesizer. It, however, is not a sound producing device but has to be connected to a sound-producing source. It does not have keys like the synthesizer or the piano but has a touch screen panel and has two lengths -- 72 cm and 132 cm."

The source adds, "Rahman was fascinated when he used this instrument in some of his concerts and also used it purely as a test this year while composing Rehna Tu for Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's Delhi 6. Since then, he has taken a big fascination for it. He is expected to use this instrument in a lot of his compositions from now on."

Did you know?
The Continuum Fingerboard also called the Haken Continuum is a music performance controller device created by Lippold Haken, professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of Illinois. It is being sold by Haken Audio also located in Illinois.

Guys,

Interesting discussion on ARR's music progression, from the 90s to 2000s.

I conur with one of the posts, ARR is associating himself with some poor directors and that is one of the key reasons for his mediocre (by his own standards;still exceptional compared to the current crop of MDs) output.

Let us look at the post 2000 scenario. Bharathiraja and Balachandar are down and out. Mani Rathnam is not the force he once was in the 90s, poor health is taking its toll. That leaves only Shankar as the top Director he has been associated with.

None of the current crop of top Directors have worked with ARR. I am eagerly awaiting Vinnaithandi Varuvaya. I hope ARR forges a good partnership with Gowtham Menon. I listened to his Varanam Aayiram and was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the songs.
I have not been a big fan of Harris but the music of VA is one of the best in Tamil I have listened to in the past couple of years.
Gowtham has the knack of extracting the best from HJ. Hope he can do it with ARR.

I wish Selvaraghavan, Aamir, Vishnuvardhan, Bala or Cheran get to work with ARR. Would be a treat for all of us fans.

My sincere request to these Directors, please work with Rahman atleast once in your career. The timing is now when all of you are at your peak and so is Rahman. I am hoping that Vinnaithandi Varuvaya would inspire these directors to work with ARR.

[tscii:dc45d9b333]Gautham Menon patches with Harris Jeyaraj?

July 22, 2009

Director Gautham Menon’s Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaya is creating a huge expectation among the fans. With Silambarasan and Trisha starring in the film, the expectation just soared higher.

AR Rahman has scored the music for VTV and all the songs are said to have come out well. The director also has plans to sign up Rahman for his next venture. Does that mean he would never consider working with his close pal Harris Jeyaraj again? In a recent interview to a magazine, Gautham said that the decision was made by Harris. Could it mean that this successful duo will patch up at some stage?

[tscii:6261bbe6a2]Jai Ho to be screened in LS

Saubhadro Chatterji / New Delhi July 24, 2009, 0:54 IST

After the Budget, it’ll be time for some Bollywood entertainment in Parliament. The Lok Sabha secretariat has arranged for a special screening of Danny Boyle’s highly-acclaimed film, Slumdog Millionaire, on August 3 for the MPs.

But the icing in the cake will be the presence of its Oscar winners—music director A R Rahman, lyricist Gulzar and sound engineer Resul Pookutty—at the special screening. This will be the first time when Rahman and the two other Oscar winners will be felicitated by Parliament for their achievement. The three had won the much-coveted US Oscar awards on February 23. The Congress, meanwhile, had used Rahman’s award winning tune, Jai Ho, as its campaign song during the run-up to the Lok Sabha election.

“As per the information available to us, A R Rehman and Resul Pukutty will be present during the special screening in Parliament. We are inviting Gulzaarsaab too,” Lok Sabha secretary-general P D T Achary told Business Standard on Thursday.”We will felicitate them before the film is screened.”

It was actually Pookutty’s idea to bring the Oscar winners to Parliament. When Achary contacted Pookutty, currently stationed in the US, about the secretariat’s plan to show the film for the Parliamentarians, Pookutty suggested bringing Rahman there. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi are expected to be present at the function.

The Lok Sabha secretariat had shown films for the MPs earlier as well but this will be the first time when a commercial film will be screened because of its worldwide fame. Last year, the secretariat screened Shyam Benegal’s Bose: the forgotten Hero for the MPs. Benegal is currently a nominated MP of the Rajya Sabha.

Earlier, stalwarts like Lata Mangeshkar (then a Rajya Sabha member) had performed at the special programme held on 50 years of Indian independence in 1997. A few years ago, shehnai maestro Bismillah Khan was also felicitated by the Parliament.

Will Rahman perform like Khan or Mangeshkar? Achary doesn’t see much hope: “He is not coming with his musical troop. We can’t ask him to sing just like that.”

Did you guys read ARR's biography by Kamini Mathai? I just finished reading the book. It was an excellent read. Before this the only ARR bio I read was that of Gops himself. Didn't read the Ananda Vikatan article as I don't know tamil.

Anyway the book gave lots of insights into ARR's life, particularly on his life as Dileep. There were also many interesting tidbits, one of which incidentally cleared a longstanding doubt I had.

I always felt Kadhalan's bgm was not really upto ARR's standards, particularly towards the climax. It had a whole "rushed into" feel throughout. Turns out it was indeed a rushed production. There is a tidbit on how the complete bgm of Kadhalan (which took weeks to compose) got deleted accidentally and then they had to do the whole thing again in just 4 days. I believe we may have lost some bgm gems with that deletion.

Another good one was how ARR couldn't come up with a tune for Thiruda Thiruda for days and finally he called up ad makers Sharada and Thrilok for permission to use an unused jingle he composed for a detergent ad years ago. Sharada, being Mani Ratnam's cousin, had no problem with it and jingle became Thee Thee.

I don't know if all these have been mentioned in the Ananda Vikatan article (would be great if someone translated the series to English). This book is a must read for fans.

Ananda Vikatan series doesn't have anything new for ARR fans. These things are not mentioned there.

I'll try to post the English translation of the series. I think I saw the translated version in Orkut ARR community.

Guess_Me,

I came across few negative reviews about the book (repetition etc..), so I didn't buy it.
I also saw some negative reviews but still went ahead and bought it as it was only Rs. 370. I was a bit skeptical too but was completely wrong. The book has lots of insight on ARR's life as Dileep and also his dad Rajagopala Kulasekhar (who became RK Sekhar due to his obsession on astrology), which I found fascinating. There were a couple of mistakes (like mentioning Suresh Menon as the director of Yodha) but that is acceptable.

Here are couple more tidbits.

We all have heard about how Mani Ratnam, who had a fallout with IR, and went to Dileep for Roja. But what I didn't know was director Kathir (real name Kathiresan) also had a fight with IR when he made Idhayam in 1991. At that time Dileep was well known in the recording circles as someone who improvises the music director's vision tremendously. Having heard about Dileep's work, Kathir went straight to his home. Dileep at the time had just started working on Roja (but Kathir didn't know that as Mani guarded it as a secret for about 8 months). Kathir met Dileep and handed over a cheque for Rs. 10,000 as advance. Dileep was astounded and was not sure what to do. Kathir said "don't worry, I have faith in you". Those particular words remain engraved in ARR's mind even today. This is the reason why ARR still works with Kathir, the man who showed blind faith in him for the first time in life.

Another one is about Boys (2003). Senthil has a cameo role in the film as a beggar whom Sai meets at a temple. Senthil explains to him his weekly routine and he says something like "on Fridays I go to A R Rahman's house to collect Biriyani". This is actually a true bit of information. Every Friday, ARR's mother Kareema serves Biriyani to all visitors, irrespective of their classes. When ARR came to know that Shankar is going to use this in Boys, he requested him to remove that part as it felt cheap for him. Shankar felt there was nothing wrong in retaining it and was adamant on keeping it. ARR wasn't happy with this and expressed it openly to Shankar. This is one of the reasons for their fallouts. Years later when Sivaji was announced, Shankar almost signed Harris Jayaraj for the project. Rajini called Shankar and said Sivaji won't happen without ARR, which ultimately made him patch up with ARR.

There has been several theories floating around, one of them being there was no fallout between them actually and it was only between IR and KB.

In the book it is mentioned that Mani and IR had a fallout during the making of Thalapathy. Nothing more is given on IR vs MR issue. But regarding K Balachander and IR, the book says their fallout started back in 1989.

There was a union strike in Tamil cinema industry that year. KB had completed the picturisation of Pudhu Pudhu Arthangal and was waiting for IR to do the re-recording. But IR was pretty adamant that he won't work until the strike is over. The strike went on for about 7 months. Ultimately KB had no choice but to reuse soundtracks from his old movies and do the re-recording in Bombay. This infuriated Ilayaraja. And KB didn't bother to calm him down. They never worked together again. Next year KB made Oru Veedu Iruvasal which had V S Narasimhan as the composer and in 1991 for Azhagan he introduced Maragada Mani. For Roja, both MR and KB went on a hunt for a new composer and found Dileep.

[tscii:bb549830da]Aishwarya Rai’s Tandav Dance for RAAVAN!! [27 Jul 2009]

Move over sensuous dancing like Kajrare in Bunty Aur Bubbly, which Aishwarya Rai had done with Abhishek and Big B. Now the gorgeous lady is learning Tandav dance from reputed Indian classical dancer Astad Deboo, which will be a fusion of Kathak, ballet and contemporary form of dancing.

The dance will present a potent mixture of passion, retribution and redemption on the screen in Mani Rathnam’s upcoming mega venture ‘Raavan’. Sources from the set of the film reveal that director Mani Rathnam wanted to have a climactic dance showing life and death, and he zeroed in on Astad Deboo, as he is considered to be the master exponent of contemporary and classical Indian dancing.

Deboo specializes in fusion dance choreography and hence was considered by Mani Rathnam to be suitable to teach Aishwarya Rai these new steps for the upcoming flick.

In fact, Aishwarya Rai is required to perform this new dance twice in the film—first time it will be with hubby Abhishek Bachchan for the Hindi version, and second time with southern superstar Vikram for the Tamil version of the flick.

As the shooting for ‘Raavan’ is taking place into the deep jungles of Athirapally in Kerala and the floors are not very conducive for dancing, Aishwarya Rai has to learn these intricate steps on slippery grounds with her new guru Astad Deboo.

Though Aishwarya Rai had vowed the audiences with her sizzling hot dance performances in flicks like(Kajrare number) ‘Bunty Aur Bubbly’ and with Hrithik Roshan in Yashraj Films’ super hit ‘Dhoom’, but this Tandav dancing is entirely new to her, and the graceful lady is finding it really difficult to come to terms that easily.

However, it must be admitted that Aishwarya Rai was no less graceful while going for classical numbers in movies like Taal’ (Kahin Aag Lage… number) and in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’ (Nimbuda …..number), and so should not have much difficulty in performing intricate steps for Mani Rathnam’s upcoming magnum opus ‘Raavan’.

‘Raavan’ is a contemporary adaptation of that great epic ‘Ramayan’ by master story teller Mani Rathnam. However, the catch in the film will be that it is going to be depicted as seen from the point of view of Raavan, and not from Ram’s point of view, as is usually the case. The title character of ‘Raavan’ is played by Abhishek Bachchan, and its he who kidnaps Aishwarya Rai in the flick.

This will be Abhishek Bachchan’s third film with Mani Rathnam after ‘Yuva’ and ‘Guru’, which were super hits at the box office. However, it will for the first time after marriage with Aishwarya Rai that Mani Rathnam will be directing Abhishek and Ash together in a flick (at the time of ‘Guru’, Abhi and Ash were dating ).

The upcoming flick ‘Raavan’ also features Govinda, Ravi Kissen, Sonu Sood, etc, from bollywood, and Vikram from southern film industry in pivotal roles.

As far as I can see the only reason ARR still composes in Tamil is due to his allegiance to TFM. Otherwise there is no monetary/fame benefit for him to work on Tamil films.

And that too the kind of stupid commercial pressures they put on him (ATM :banghead: ) and the relative freedom/scope he gets in bollywood, one feels sorry that he wastes his talent in the one or two tamil movies he does.

I sincerely hope that his future tamil ventures (VTV, Endhiran... ) puts a full stop to this and let us experience the real ARR in full splendour, last seen in albums like KKS and songs like Newyork nagaram.

[tscii:fe76093227]JAI HO: Music director A R Rahman and Apollo Hospitals founder Prathap C Reddy interacting with the parents of a child after the inauguration of Apoll

CHENNAI: Apollo Children’s Hospital, a standalone Quaternary Care Paediatric Hospital, was inaugurated by Oscar award winning music director A R Rahman amidst much fanfare on Thursday.

With a tagline that reads ‘Touching little lives’, the hospital offers world class healthcare in a child-friendly ambience - with painted motifs of teddy bears and playpens - that are a departure from the regular hospital atmosphere. Speaking on the occasion, Rahman said: “I don’t want children to come to hospitals. But children, if you happen to come here, I can tell you that you are in safe hands.”

He recalled how he had once bought a piece of land to build a hospital for children and said: “now there is no need for it as this hospital has fulfilled my dream.”

The Apollo Children’s Hospital is designed to provide comprehensive paediatric care to children and adolescents up to the age of 16 under one roof. The hospital has in its employ 45 top paediatric specialists in the country and over 180 nurses.

Established on an area of 39,000 sq ft, it is complete with a neonatology care unit, paediatric intensive care facilities, three operation theatres, 24-hour paediatric emergency services, sunshine ward, cheerful private rooms and tastefully decorated suites.

Dr Prathap C Reddy, Chairman, Apollo Hospitals, said: “ In India, with the world’s largest population of children, this hospital is a major moment in the journey of the Apollo family. We had to find the right specialists for the quality care we intend to provide, which is why it took us so long to launch this project. Now we have world class paediatric specialists, 45 of them with us.”

Apollo Hospitals Managing Director Preetha Reddy said: “This is a first in our chain of children’s hospitals. Soon we will take it to other centres.” Sindoori Reddy, Vice-President Operations, Apollo Children’s Hospital, welcomed the gathering that included Chennai’s crème de la crème.

[tscii:29bb988eb7]AR Rahman sneaks back to Chennai from LA to spend time with his family.

Double Oscar winner AR Rahman’s life has become super-hectic after his international win. This Chennai-based music composer who has been dividing his time between Chennai, Mumbai, London and Los Angeles, has now begun to miss the time he used to spend at home with his wife and children. So Rahman took a totally unscheduled break from his assignments in LA and was back in Chennai on Friday for two weeks.

Confirming the news, Rahman said, “The kids were always there with me when I worked regularly from home in Chennai. Now I get to spend less time with them. Even now when I’m here in Chennai, work for my pending Hindi films like Blue has to be taken care of. I’ve come at a time when I cannot afford to take a break. My first Hollywood soundtrack for Couples Retreat has to be ready because the film is releasing on October 6.”

Not that Rahman is complaining. He is used to being rushed. “I always liked to work at my own pace and that hasn’t changed. But now the volume and profile of the workload is so eclectic that I need to find more time to focus on the individual assignments more carefully. Yeah, it’s a tough balancing act. But I’m enjoying myself. After I finish the soundtrack of Couples Retreat, which is 80 per cent complete, I’ve an artistes’ album coming up. It is one of my biggest international challenges. It’s too early to talk about it. But yes, it will involve musicians from all over the world and I’ll be composing the music. Recently, I also got to work with the John Williams Orchestra and that was a dream-come-true. I guess my dreams are coming true,” gushed Rahman.

Rahman wants all his children to be adept at music. In fact, Rahman’s son, Ameen, who has sung in Couples Retreat, attends Rahman’s music academy in Chennai. Commenting on Ameen’s early start, Rahman said, “It’s just a small part of a song in Couples Retreat. We found his voice to be suitable for it. And that’s it. My son is certainly not embarking on a singing career at that age. He’s just a child. He has so many things to do and achieve before he decides on a career. I think he should be allowed to do what he likes. The final call will be his. No peer pressure.”

Rahman returns to LA in the second week of August. Tease him about being Dr Rahman and he says, “You will have to say the ‘Doctor’ thrice,” referring to the three doctorates that he has received since the Oscar triumph.

Rahman, Stalin get honorary doctorates

Sat, Aug 1 10:01 PM
Chennai, Aug 1 (IANS) Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman, Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and Chandrayaan project director M. Annadurai were Saturday conferred with honorary doctorates by Anna University here.

Governor and varsity chancellor Surjit Singh Barnala gave away the honourary degrees at a special convocation.

The degrees were conferred on Rahman and Annadurai for their achievements in the realm of music and space technology respectively and on Stalin for his contribution to the state's administration, Anna University Vice Chancellor P. Mannar Jawahar said.

This is the third doctorate for Rahman after he won two Oscars for Hollywood movie 'Slumdog Millionaire'. The first was from Aligarh Muslim University and the second from London's Middlesex University.

This is the first honourary doctorate conferred on Stalin, 56, a graduate of Madras University.

Honorary doctorates from Tamil Nadu universities are normally given to chief ministers of the state with incumbent M. Karunanidhi, as also M.G. Ramachandran and Jayalalitha who have previously occupied the post, among the major politicians to have been conferred the honour while in power.

Rahman turns emotional on Lankan Tamils' plight

Chennai: Oscar Winner A R Rahman on Saturday turned emotional over the plight of suffering Sri Lankan Tamils as an honorary doctorate was conferred upon him by Anna University.

Speaking after receiving the doctorate, the music maestro said that he had been skipping functions in Tamil Nadu keeping in mind the plight of the Tamils suffering in Sri Lanka.

"Soon after I won the Oscar, I was invited for several functions in Tamil Nadu. But I had avoided them because many Tamils were suffering in Sri Lanka. I hope that a solution will come," he stated.

"If I had hurt anyone by not accepting their invitations, I apologise to them," he said, adding, this was his second function in Tamil Nadu after winning the Oscar.

He said the first public function he had attended was the inauguration of Apollo Children's Hospital a few days ago.

"A last minute AR Rahman song featuring Akshay is being added to salvage Blue"

Akshay Kumar has a negative role, but has been asked to perform an extra song for the film. In fact, the film’s music composer A R Rahman, who’s currently down in India, has been busy putting together a song for Akshay.

Director Tony D’Souza confirms this last-minute embellishment. He said, “We have a song to shoot with Akshay. We’re waiting for him to find time to shoot it. It will be played with the film’s end credits. Akshay prefers the British Bhangra band, RDB. But in Blue, we’re giving him a Rahman track to jive to. Now that’s an offer Akshay cannot resist.”[/tscii:99a978d1ed]

Rahman's son to sing in Tamil
IndiaGlitz [Friday, August 07, 2009]

A week after reports claimed that music composer AR Rahman's son Alim would sing in a Hollywood film, the Oscar-award winner today said his son would render voice for Tamil movies too.

Speaking at a function to release the album 'Sing along with rhythms', brought out by the students of KM Music Conservatory run by him, Rahman said, 'Alim is just six. He is learning music now and he will certainly sing in Tamil films soon.'

On the album he said, 'I am happy that my students have come out with an album. My prayers to Almighty for these students to go and rock in the world of music.'

Andrea, Shruthi Haasan and filmmaker Goutham Menon among others were present.

[tscii:415c5b54c7]Rahman join hands with Middlesex University
IndiaGlitz [Friday, August 07, 2009]

Oscar-award winning music composer AR Rahman on Thursday revealed plans for a first-ever collaboration in music instruction between his K M Music Conservatory and UK-based Middlesex University.

¡®We started the conservatory out of nothing. Now, this collaboration is the next step for us. This is really a big thing and we believe that it is the right way forward to provide quality education,¡¯ Rahman said at a felicitation function in Chennai.

According to circles close to the music maestro, a three-year programme will be launched where students could complete two years at the conservatory ad the final year at the university.

Middlesex University conferred an honorary doctorate on Rahman, after he won two Oscars for the movie Slumdog Millionaire. He said plans for the partnership were made when he was awarded the doctorate.

Today I was listening to ATM BGM's that someone had uploaded in the net...Wow...Wat a collection....So many variations in the same tune...Cool intro for Shreya...

Great but the downside was "Liquid Dance" theme in ATM opening credits. I was shocked to see the exact music .ARR has simply modified with all gamakams and reused it in Slumdog Millionaire...Hmmmm..I thought Jai Ho was the only reused song...

A R Rahman delighted the six winning musical teams at the launch of Ooh La La, a music album by Sa Re Ga Ma Indian Limited.

The non film albums in Tamil and Telugu were released by Rahman and were received by Gautam Vasudev Menon, Andrea and Shruti Hasssan in the presence of KR Vijaylakshmi and Apurva Nagpal from the music label.

Speaking on the occasion Rahman agreed it must have been a great test of patience for the music bands to wait nearly two years for this big day. 'Hold on to your music and go back to your roots and have fun' said Rahman.

Gautam Menon told the gathered bands, 'Bands wither away due to financial and creative reasons but don't let that happen to you.' Andrea who is a singer said, 'As artists you will be bombarded by people telling you what to do but don't listen to anything and stay true to what you believe in.'

Shruti Hassan added, 'I am an upcoming musician and I know how hard it is. I hope the music stays with you all forever.'

Rahman's KM Conservatory students will be involved with the next project of the music label titled Sing Along Rhymes. Asked whether his son will sing in Tamil in the future, Rahman replied in the affirmative saying, 'Yes, he's interested in music and has the talent.'

The albums have non-film music created by the bands who have put together songs that talk of their experiences and reflect their thoughts. A short AV presentation gave an insight into the project.

[tscii:a792e7ded4]Slumdog composer reaches around the world in harmony
Email Printer friendly version Normal font Large font A.R. Rahman … concert will be a gesture of goodwill.

INDIA'S Oscar-winning pop icon, the Slumdog Millionaire composer A.R. Rahman, wants to counter recent attacks on Indian students in Sydney and Melbourne with a free concert during the Sydney Festival in January.

''Considering the recent hassles that have created a bad vibe I thought this concert would be a statement of peace,'' he told the Herald yesterday.

Rahman said he hoped to deepen the connection between India and Australia.

''I hope it will do what ever it can to reunite culturally and spiritually,'' he said.

Festival organisers said Rahman suggested a free concert as a demonstration of cultural diplomacy and a gesture of goodwill. It will be held at Parramatta Park on Saturday, January 16.

''This show is very important to me,'' said Rahman, who won two Academy Awards for composing the soundtrack for the hit movie Slumdog Millionaire. ''I hope it creates a bridge of understanding and love.''

A series of attacks on Indians studying in Australia over the past two months has received widespread media coverage in India and damaged Australia's reputation as a safe destination for students.

''As a musician I believe in peace and I believe in the good nature of people, so I feel that it was one of my duties to come and perform in what ever way I could help building a bridge between both countries,'' Rahman said.

He hopes the concert will help break down cultural misunderstandings and boost the morale of tens of thousands of Indians studying in Australia.

Rahman, 43, is a superstar in India, where film and pop music are one. His film scores and soundtracks have achieved sales of more than 300 million, making him one of the best-selling recording artists in the world.

Rahman has won 13 Filmfare Awards, four National Film Awards, a BAFTA Award and a Golden Globe for Slumdog Millionaire.

A Time magazine critic dubbed him the ''the Mozart of Madras''.

The film's anthem, Jai Ho, became an international hit and Rahman promised fans to expect songs from the movie at the Sydney concert.

Rahman's friend, the Australian filmmaker Baz Luhrmann, choreographed Rahman's performance of Jai Ho at this year's Oscar ceremony.

The song was used by the Congress Party as part of its triumphant re-election campaign in May.

Rahman has fond memories of playing to packed crowds in Sydney and Melbourne in 2005.

''They were probably some of the best concerts we have ever done,'' he said. ''I want to re-create that in Australia this time.''

The Premier, Nathan Rees, congratulated Rahman for ''his leadership and goodwill'' in offering to perform at the free concert.

''We all look forward to having him here next year.''

Rahman's mega bang!
Prithwish Ganguly / DNAMonday, August 10, 2009 23:59

Mumbai: AR Rahman is gearing up for a big international venture that will see him compose music for some of the most prominent artistes of the world. If sources are to be believed, he will team up with the Pussycat Dolls, Mick Jagger, Kylie Minogue, Joss Stone and several others who will render their voice for an album that is expected to boast of a galaxy of singers and artistes who have earlier worked with the Mozart of Madras.

An industry source says, "Rahman is currently busy with a track for the film Blue and he will then set his eyes on completing his Hollywood venture Couples Retreat. Post these two assignments, he will take a plunge at doing this international album that will see him make music for some of the best singers and artistes of the world. It is a very hush-hush project as Rahman is now currently meeting with officials who are firming up the names that will feature in this star-studded album."

The insider adds, "It is heard that Rahman might be teaming up with people he has already worked with for this compilation. He has worked with Pussycat Dolls for Jai Ho and they are certainly the hot favourites on the list. Rahman is also very fond of Mick Jagger and Joss Stone having been associated with them. Efforts to rope them in can't be ruled out. He has also recently recorded with Kylie Minogue and she is a huge star in the West. She will definitely be approached for the album. Several other big names who have expressed their willingness to work with AR Rahman are also being looked at."

The informer further says, "Rahman has also worked with the Finnish folk music band Varttina for whom he did the music for the theatrical production The Lord of the Rings. Vanessa Mae could also be in, as also Karen Shenaz David."

Despite several attempts, while Rahman remained unavailable for a comment, his aide confirmed, "Rahman has been contracted for this and he will start working on the album at the end of this year. The list of the artistes are being finalised, so we can't reveal much, but yes, it will have all international artistes in it. The album will be a compilation."

Kollywood observers feel that there has been a marked change in the public conduct and speeches of 'Maestro' Ilaiyaraaja for the past few months. The 'Isaignani', as he is popularly known, seldom involves himself in any activities other than composing music and making a rare appearance at functions. Of late, though, his speech appears to have been 'aimed' at having a go at his peer and junior A.R. Rehman, his one-time keyboard player.

For the first time in more than three decades of his musical sojourn, Ilaiyaraaja has appeared in an entire song in his recent film 'Azhagarmalai' . The melodious title song in the film not only features him but also is sung by the Maestro himself. Even the lyrics were penned by himself and had lines such as "whosoever wishes to go away from this country may do as they please; I would remain here forever in the service of my people".

These lines could be taken as against no particular individual; but his recent remarks at an event to launch a carnatic music-based album were unmistakable. Speaking at the launch, Ilaiyaraaja said that "Some persons claim that all the fame 'goes' to the Lord. This is wrong; why would be a God be in need of fame. Isn't He the one who showers on us fame and popularity and money? How can we 'return' to Him the fame given to us by Him? It won't be proper at all!"

While all these queries raised by the Maestromight sound genuine, the reference to the man is unmistakable. When even a child knows that it's Rahman's popular habit to admit on stages that "all fame goes to the Lord", it's highly surprising as to what the Maestro expected the people to think of his reported remarks

[tscii:e41f9880e6]Rahman moves from Slum to Stars

Just when we thought the Slumdog mania is over, here’s a smack up. A R Rehman is making a big song and dance.

In his next big international venture, he is going to team up with Mick Jagger, Kylie Minogue, Pussycat Dolls and Joss Stone as they are on his favourite list for the new project he wants to produce.

The mini Mozart of Madras is currently busy working on a special track for the film Blue, after which he will finish work on Couples Retreat, which also has his son singing in it. Now that’s a combination we all want to hear.

Earlier, Rahman worked with Pussycat Dolls and took up the Slumdog fever one step up on music charts across the globe. And now with more names adding to an all out international project, things can only get better for the musician from Slum land!

AR Rahman to host music show to mark DD’s 50 years

Mumbai, Aug 12 (ANI): Oscar winner AR Rahman is all set to host a music show on Doordarshan to mark the leading Indian network’s golden jubilee.

The show called ‘The Big Band’ will have close to 40 music bands from countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Singapore, and Sri Lanka competing with each other.

Rahman said that he has a three-decade-old association with Doordarshan and termed this proposal as a great comeback.

“I have been associated with them 29 years back, when I used to play for a children programme and it used to be famous. So, it’s great to be back on 50th anniversary of Doordarshan,” Rahman told ANI (Asian News International).

Director general of Doordarshan, Aruna Sharma, said that the show would be telecast in December this year.

“We are planning to come up with a major programme in the coming months along…under the guidance of Mr. A R Rahman for that show, which would be coming very soon on Doordarshan,” she said.

Doordarshan, the public television broadcaster of India and a division of Prasar Bharati, started in Delhi in September 1959. (ANI[/tscii:5b50cf31ab]

Genius Needs Company

It’s good to see you all come here this evening. Usually, we have a big show with over a hundred musicians and dancers but this is different. We’re here tonight to only play music,” said AR Rahman as he took the stage for A R Rahman Unplugged, with singers Hariharan, Sadhana Sargam and percussionist Sivamani at Delhi’s Siri Fort Auditorium. The concert marked the beginning of the year-long celebration to commemorate 50 years of Doordarshan.

Rahman took to the piano and Hariharan’s voice soared to the haunting tune of Tu Hi Re from Bombay, one of their first collaborations together. “In the early 90s we featured Rahman on Doordarshan and today he is an international phenomenon. We had to celebrate this occasion with his music,” said Aruna Sharma, Director General, Doordarshan. And Rahman will be taking his association with them further with the Big Band, a reality TV talent hunt for India’s best music group. Conceptualised and headed by Rahman himself, it is slated to be one of the most exciting talent shows to hit our TV screens this year.

Considering the Rahman aura and the other heavyweights who were part of this concert, the attendance was remarkably thin. From outside Siri Fort Road you could barely tell anything was happening. Haphazardly marketed and poorly publicised, the audience consisted mainly of Doordarshan employees. The show began with the high-voltage and thoroughly entertaining Kailash Kher and his band Kailasa. The little man with the big voice sang Rahman’s hits from Mangal Pandey, Delhi 6, and Swades. “Everybody in Delhi is a VIP but I do think it would be nice if you could lift your bodies from those cushy seats and dance to the music,” chortled Kher as the band played the title track from Rang De Basanti. The evening also saw the debut performance of 30 students from Rahman’s music school, the K M Music Conservatory in Chennai, who performed a medley of seven raagas and Amazing Grace. “We have different musical cultures in India and these children are training in the best of Indian classical and Western classical music and I hope there is room for both tonight,” said Rahman, founder and Principal of the institute. It was only after the rousing applause for his students that Rahman settled down behind the piano and played uninterruptedly for 40 minutes, gems from Roja, Bombay, Lagaan and Guru, a rare treat for his fans and music lovers.

[tscii:e275b583fc]Rahman moves from Slum to Stars

A StarBoxOffice source confirmed the news, “Rahman has been getting a lot more names who want to associate with him after his new found success in the international arena. Rahman pays tribute to MJ

In a matter of few months, AR Rahman has lost two people he looked up to - sound engineer H Sridhar and Michael Jackson. Sound engineer H Sridhar passed away in December due to cardiac arrest and the cause of MJ’s death is still a mystery.

Consequently, Rahman has decided to put together a special album as a mark of respect to MJ. Of late, Rahman has been making several trips to the US because his secret dream project is ready to take off. Artistes from all across the globe will contribute to this album. It is believed that the album will have a few recreated songs of MJ, along with Rahman’s original compositions.

The King of Pop’s untimely and mysterious death unsettled Rahman. A source said, “The two deaths one after the other made Rahman realise the uncertainty of life. These tragedies have made him more spiritual.”

Rahman had earlier said, “Artistes and their art lives for ever. My late sound engineer Sridhar had brought me a video of the premiere of Michael’s Remember the Time when I was recording the track Kadal Rojave for my first movie Roja. That afternoon, that video inspired all of us. Now, there is no Sridhar and no Jackson anymore.”

Rahman was looking forward to working with MJ whom he had met during the Oscar Awards in Los Angeles earlier this year. Talking about his meeting with the pop star, Rahman had said, “MJ was concerned about contemporary developmental issues such as global warming, wars and their consequences. He asked me to compose a unity anthem on the lines of We are the World for him. I nodded in awe.”

When asked about the album, Rahman, who is going LA this week, said cautiously, “It’s too early to talk about it. Talking about it right now may jeopardise things.” [/tscii:9ae74422d8]

F Prev 1/2Next LMumbai: There are still some people who are not affected by the dust of this so-called "materialistic world". It is correctly said that music drives away all your sins. The Oscar winner music director A.R. Rahman has proven his worth.

With the repeated racial attacks on Indian students, the Academy Award winner has decided to express his plight over it. Now, he has planned to stage a concert in Australia free of cost on January 10, 2010.

In an exclusive interview with media channels, Rahman has said, "I hope this musical concert will sort out racial problems and bring peace and harmony amongst everyone."

It is worth mentioning that Rahman's musical album "PRAY FOR ME BROTHER" based on World peace was universally acclaimed.

Rahman, UK University to collaborate in music, education

14 Aug 2009, 0516 hrs IST, PTI

LONDON: Seeking to build a "great bridge" between Asian and Western music, Oscar-winning maestro A R Rahman will join hands with a leading British
university on blending the two genres.

A Memorandum of Understanding in this regard has been signed between Rahman's Chennai-based K M Music Conservatory and Middlesex University that will also look at opportunities to provide a collaborative three-year music programme, a University press release said today.

Rahman, who was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University recently, described the collaboration in music instruction as a "great bridge" between the two genres.

Middlesex University offers programmes in music composition, music management, jazz and popular music.

"The two organisations have agreed to explore the possibilities for collaboration in music and education and to support one of A R Rahman's 'pet projects', that of blending Asian and Western musical styles," the release said.

Rahman's KM Music Conservatory started only a year ago, but already has 200 students.

Asked what he considers his biggest achievement, Rahman said it is his film music.

"As a human being I have so many interests. The Academy Awards (for Slumdog Millionaire) opened doors worldwide and legitimised Indian musicians," he said.

[tscii:e714036609]Rahman waits for Farhan to sing!

Shooting for Kartik Calling Kartik and hunting for exotic locales for Don 2 is keeping Farhan Akhtar so busy that he is unable to find time to record a song for Blue with AR Rahman.

The song will be filmed on Zayed Khan. Rahman, who is scheduled to return to India from the US next week, has the option of scrapping the song or recording it with a different singer. But the composer is willing to wait as he is keen to work with Farhan. He says, “It’s not just his voice.

It’s the attitude that he extends to his vocals. I thought Farhan sounded terrific in Rock On!!. But the song I have in mind is totally different. I am against talking about something which is uncertain. What if the time factor plays villain? No point in jumping the gun.”

Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya Exclusive :smokesmirk:

In an exclusive interview with Goutham Menon, he talked about Rahman among other things he was asked about eg. Surya, Simbhu, HJ, his movies, etc

When asked about ARR, he said just the same as anyone else. He feel humbled. "Naan kooda ethanayo pera ivan waste-u  appadinnu ellam sollirukken. Aana avaru oru vartha kooda mathavangala pathi thappa sonnathu illa."

And another exclusive news about VTV:

When discussing for the songs, ARR suggested a theory in Bible - that if one hand slaps the face, let the other side of the face to be slapped, since the heroine plays a Christian in the movie - to be used in the song. Thamarai and GM liked the idea and Thamarai came up with a lyric like "En idhayathai thirudinaal maru ithayam thirudida thanthiduven" :)

Aadhavan’s a treat to the ears’
SRINIVASA RAMANUJAM, TNN 19 August 2009, 12:00am IST
Print Email Discuss Bookmark/Share Save Comment Text Size: |

The uproar over his supposed rift with Gautham Menon has just died down, with the director getting Oscar winner Rahman to set the tunes for his

Harris Jayaraj
next movie.

Harris Jayaraj seems a bit tired on that front, but that’s not stopping him from turning to his first love — music.
His songs in Vaaranam Aayiram came in for a lot of praise and going by the hard work he’s put in, that’s the same result that he’s expecting for his tunes in the upcoming Suriya-starrer Aadhavan. And, he’s just waiting for the album to hit the stores.

“There’s a surprise for my fans in it,” he starts off, “The album will be a treat to the ears. I’ve used Dr Burn for a rap bit that’ll have the youth on their feet.” But, that’s not all — in the craze for composing peppy tunes, the affable musician hasn’t forgotten the old-world charm associated with yesteryear singers. “I’ve also gotten Mano to sing a song for me... now, how’s that,” he asks, with a twinkle in his eyes.
It could well be coincidence, but Harris has been scoring for a lot of Suriya movies. Harris expects the music of Aadhavan to be as popular as his Ayan, if not better. So, what’s the connection between Suriya and soulful music? “There’s some connection there, I think,” he muses, pondering for a minute, “Actually, when it comes to Suriya, he’s able to translate my songs well on-screen. His expressions and moves add value to the songs that I compose.”

So, like Suriya, is Harris a romantic at heart too? “No, not at all,” he smiles, “I’m more of a spiritual person these days. My romance is with God.”

It’s on that same note that he talks about his once-favourite director Gautham Menon, with whom he worked on Vaaranam Aayiram. “Anyone will want to work with Gautham,” is all he has to say when asked if he’ll work with the Kaakha Kaakha filmmaker again, “He gave me a chance to try out a dappankuthu type of a number in his film (Anjala...) and I’ll never forget that.”
Does he feel that he ought to have got Vinnaithaandi Varuvayaa, a project in which Gautham joins hands with A R Rahman? “Not at all,” he states, “I’m sure that this new combination will rock.”

Will he want to sign Gautham’s next film at least? “It’s not in my hands,” he says, shrugging his shoulders, “God gives me a decision when it has to be made and that’s how it works. I have no say in my decisions.” Philosophers, take a bow!

[tscii:ec3d1577cf]I make sure my hair and tie are in place

By Subhash K Jha
Posted On Thursday, August 20, 2009 at 03:47:33 AM

So full are Rahman's hands with current assignments in the West that he has decided not to accept any new films. "At the moment, I'm racing against time to complete the Indian projects I've on hand and that includes Mani Ratnam's Raavana, Rajnikanth's animation film Sultan and Tony D'Souza's Blue. The last new assignment I accepted was Abbas Tyrewala's 1:800-LOVE. I've stopped taking on anymore for now."

Rahman is going through a schizophrenic phase. He says, "In the studio, my outer self has to be completely switched off. But when I'm at international public events, I've to be all there, shaking hands, making friendly talk. I've to ensure that I am saying the right things. I've to prepare myself physically, look into the mirror and make sure my hair and tie are in place."

Rahman doesn't mind letting his `outer self' look dapper. But people around him don't seem that comfortable with his upgraded look. Chuckles Rahman, "My south Indian friends say, `Oh look at him… he's changed!' And that makes me uncomfortable. I realise I have to go out there with a certain amount of dignity and even style. I know I'm representing my country and everyone is watching."

It's not easy being India's brand ambassador in the West. And Rahman, shy and reclusive at the best of times, finds it tough to assume his new gregarious, well-groomed persona with international brands vying to dress him up from head to toe.

"It's all new to me. I've just begun to get a hang of it. But I'm not uncomfortable, " he says. At the moment, Rahman is fighting off the temptation of taking on too many international assignments. He explains, "I take on what is physically possible. Money is not the main criteria. If I did anything for money, everything will fall flat. I want to do only those assignments to which I can give my fullest."

However Rahman admits money is important. He says, "Money is not my dream. But it fulfils my dreams. The way I travel and accompanying expenses are costly. It is, for me, my family and my children's future."

With success, come the riders. He says, "My wife dreamt that one day I'd win an Oscar which I did. But after that I've been constantly traveling. The kids are growing up now and one of us has to look after them. I'm spending as much time with them as I can. Or trying to make them part of what I do so they can be with me."

At the moment, Rahman has only one ambition. "I want to be happy."

[tscii:aa0d990a06]ARR roped in for Yuddham Sei?Sabtu, 22 Ogos, 2009 03:49

If the grapevine is to be believed, then A. R. Rahman will be composing the music for Kamal Haasan’s period film Yuddham Sei directed by Mysshkin. According to sources, Kamal felt that Rahman’s magical touch would do wonders for this film. Apparently, ARR had earlier agreed to compose the music for one the actor’s films, which was to be produced under his home banner of Rajkamal Film International and, by agreeing to work on Yuddham Sei, he is just fulfilling that commitment.
Meanwhile, the audio of Kamal’s forthcoming movie Unnai Pol Oruvan, which also marks his daughter Shruti’s music directorial debut, will be launched by the end of this month. The film will hit the screens around the third week of September.

ARR meets Vangelis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vangelis)

[html:bd02fd5745]

[/html:bd02fd5745]

I was visiting the late L Vaidyanathan, composer brother of L Subramaniam in 1987 when he first played me the music of Vangelis and explained to me his ability to bring soul into synthesizers.

My memories of listening to his music on headphones on the way from Bangalore to Chennai after finishing arranging work for music composer Vijay Anand while travelling in third class due to delayed bookings are still fresh.

Vangelis' music used to transport me to another planet, releasing me from those inevitable noises in a train.

It was such a surprise when one of my friends took me to Vangelis' house last week in Greece. He is very philosophical and a great lover of art and science. He still plays the keyboard with a child-like interest.

I asked him if he is interested in doing an Indian project with talent in India. His response was, 'Why not?'

Here is the picture of him and I!

It must have been a dream come true for our A.R.Rahman.

Vangelis is a legend on his own. Being a hardcore ARR fan, I came to know about Vangelis when someone mentioned "Pudhu Vellai Mazhai" was inspired from Vangelis' Oscar winning work "Chariots of Fire".
That track was released in 1982 and I was spellbound with the musical masterpiece. Immediately I began to hear his other works and I soon became a hardcore fan of Vangelis as well.

I have read that A.R.Rahman is a great fan of Vangelis, Chic Corea and Dave Grusin. That has greatly influenced our man's music.
I would humbly request our TFM forum people to listen to Vangelis' works like Chariots of Fire","Tao of Love","The Bounty Opening and Closing Titles","Pulstar", L'Opera Sauvage, Blade Runner", Albedo to know the greatness of his music.

He was also a single man orchestra (which later ARR also adopted) and his works with Yamaha CS80 synthesizer(that majestic CS80 Brass) is just out of the world.

He is no doubt our ARR's greatest inspiration. People working with music synthesizer S/W may please download Arturia CS 80 vst and see its effect..

I kindly request the moderator not to delete this scrap....

Definitely like the re-recording idea, not sure about dubbing to English though!

Wait, maybe I understood the article wrong. They're probably dubbing the film & re-recording the songs in Tamil/Hindi.

Just few months back everyone was asking whether Roja could be re recorded. Because those tunes + today's technology + ARR's touch of the present would be just awesome.

Wow!! Thats great to hear..But I think international audience are already exposed to this movie. I think, MR has already released it in English as Rose for the International audience...

Yes of course, ARR can retain the same music but can record it in new technology that will elevate the immortal classic...

But that original music should not lose its magic....Thats my biggest concern...

Yes..That old synthesizer will surely show up...Dunno whether its is a Yamaha DX7 or Juno synthesizer...But I have observed whenever ARR performs live on stage, Roja's songs can give the current songs a run for their money both in terms of sound quality and crispness.....

No one can describe the feeling one gets when we hear the prelude of Chinna Chinna Aasai" or the intro humming of Sujatha in Kaadhal Rojaave"...We get emotionally chocked...

[tscii:e747394bab]Gautham wants to work with Rahman and Harris

August 27, 2009

Time and again one question that director Gautham Menon faces is if there are any chances of working together with music director Harris Jayaraj again. And this time too, the director has maintained that the decision not to work together was not his but Harris’.

Gautham adds that his dream to work with AR Rahman came true in Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya and this paved way for signing him up for his other projects as well. However, the director maintains that he prefers to work with Harris as well as Rahman in future.

Wonder what Harris has to say about this!

 We need to send Prabhu Deva to chreograph some steps for them.Yeah, their choreography is anything but impressive. Perhaps the judges are impressed to see them dancing to "Bollywood" tunes, something new for them. But they better buck up before they are bored with it. :)

Thalafanz,
they are not europeans (though spain is). it is more Spanish.. In spanish "J" is pronounced as "h" so for ex "Jesus" is pronounced as "Yesuus". so Jai Ho is something like Yai Ho...

Oh ok. Thanks for the explanation. :) But, I feel the same for PCD version too... Instead of 'Jay Ho', she pronounce as 'Jaiii Ho'... :P
