very tough poll!!!!!

I voted for "Poovil Vandu Koodum"... I luv this kind of iyarkayai rasikkum songs similar to "idhu oru ponmalai pozhudhu".

I guess "Poojaikkaaga Vaazhum " was written by Panju Arunachalam.

veLLich chalangaigaL ... konda kalaimagaL...

(he starts with husky smiling secretive voice, full of love! ... minute things makes huge diff  )

"செவி ரெண்டும் கண்ணாக ஆகும் இனி (he is blind)

Again jathi steals and plays vital part in every song. Its these jathis which gives life to almost all songs in this movie.

Song brims with anticipation and love !

Just observe at the variation in SPB's voice in EVERY SONG.

Maturity highlighted in some songs, love in few, pathos in others, HE ACTS the tune

"தேஹம் கெடாது தீயில் விழாது யாரும் தொடாத சுருதி
அண்டம் பொடிபட நெஞ்சம் உருகிட தேவி வருவது உறுதி"

Here we are able to recollect

"ஆனந்த கங்கை வெள்ளம் பொங்க!.
...நித்தம் நித்தம் உள்ளம் செழிக்க
..முதல் முதல் ராக தீபம்"
(may be same raaga :? )

Good song. Somehow this rated lil lower for me . It had always!

I mean favs than the ones mentioned above
_____

nadhiyil aadum poovanam  :sigh2:

kuzhanju, neliju, ... epdi ipdi oru tune! IR   :cant-find-words:

Even when bg starts, it takes u high away from this world.!

"அலைகள் வீ...சும்.. :sigh2: சாமரம்

"அலையின் மிதக்கும் மாதுளை
இவள் பிரம்மதேவன் சாதனை"

Tune makes u literally shake ur head! :swinghead:

The lyrics says she is brahmma devan sadhanai (and he is blind! :) , quite emphasising beauty is in mind, never in appearance)

mruthangam

The song concentrates on physical urge which both suffer and yet control. Lyrics are quite explicit about the feel though. Hence the tune is kinda seductively intoxicating!

"நதியில் ஆடும் பூவ...னம்... "
ஜானகி at her best!

"இரு விழி இலை எனும் ஒரு குறை இது வரை

Kuyile kuyile

bg is fine...

SJ rules here than SPB

"வானத்து நிலவை தண்ணீரிலே
சிறை வைத்த கதை தான் உன் கதையே!"

 nice lyrics :)

"அழகே அமுதே வருவாய்...அஆ...."

The fall down is not gliding smooth and somehow so incomplete.

The strength for this song is

Raaga! (pathos)
SJ (romba anubavichu paadum sogam kuralil thaLumbugirathu)
She scores more than SPB

Overall a well tuned pathos, which takes u so low, that it becomes difficult to raise ur spiriits immediately. :(

Sangeetha jaathi mullai

I feel I am WAY MUCH UNDERQUALIFIED to comment on this song!

This song, makes me cry, tears roll down, involuntarily! A lump formed which doesn't clear that fast.

lyrics! bg! spb! jathi! Swarams! Variation in single song! raagam! tune! IR! Verses spoken between! picturisation! Dance! Radha! story!

and....much more which I cant place!

Simply a dance/bg/tune/music towards..... frustration/helplessness/death!

simply EVERYTHING

"

With just this post, I shall stop monopolising this thread.

I was hardly 13 to 15 or much less :? when this movie was released. I had not watched the movie then. My dad had these songs tape recorded.

It was one fine sunday morning. My tape recorder was playing these songs FOR THE FIRST TIME.

I was 13. Defintiely I did not know the story, movie, actors. NOTHING. I generally never used to watch much movies then (too young to watch).

and...I listened to these songs. I could not do anything but listen again and again and again.

and I cried, NOT knowing, why!

Power of music!
Power of IR!

Btw, lyrics of almost all songs speaks about

"impossible or unattainable love"

I voted for Naadham En Jeevanae, just for that violin bit , which comes at the end of every line. man thats out of the world feeling when i listen this song and esp that violin bit.

If you have noticed , most of the times IR used only KJY for carnatic based movies like sindhu bairavi, moga mul etc, on the other hand he used only SPB for movies based on classical dance/bharata natya like salangai oli, kadhal oviyam etc.

But the great, irreplaceable S.Janaki did both kind of songs with such ease and elegance that i really wondering will there be any female singer in south/north who is as versataile as she was.

I had this feelin that 'Sangeetha Jaathi Mullai' will win hands down, but now i can see the votes are evenly distributed, and i am expecting a close call like johny ,once all other regualr hubbers starts to vote.

Great album! Tough choice for me between "sangeetha jathi mullai" and 'poovil vandu"... finally went with "sangeetha jathi.."
an interesting snippet about this song:

IR on the ease with which SPB sings - For the movie Kathal Oviyam, IR had requested SPB to come and sing the song "Sangeetha Jaathi Mullai". SPB first refused saying he was very busy that day and had other stuff to do, and finally agreed on the condition that it will be done by 10AM. The recording finally was over at 3pm the same day. The phrase which caused the delay was "Kuyile Kuyile Untha Ragam Nenjil Indru Aadum." If you remember the song - at "Aadum" the tune reaches a crescendo (ri Ri) and then descends (to sa). Originally the descending portion was to be sung as sndpmgrs (avarohanam), but apparently SPB couldn't sing it. IR remaked "Ennapa SNDPMGRS paada mudiyaliyaa." IR had to simplified the tune twice before SPB was able to sing it correctly and the third version is what we hear today.

pls remove the two 'Nathil Aadum' and make it one. It will get votes

Yeah, it was my bad, but i can not do anything now, as per the FAQ;

'How do I edit or delete a poll?
As with posts, polls can only be edited by the original poster, a moderator, or board administrator. To edit a poll, click the first post in the topic, which always has the poll associated with it. If no one has cast a vote then users can delete the poll or edit any poll option. However, if people have already placed votes only moderators or administrators can edit or delete it; this is to prevent people rigging polls by changing options mid-way through a poll."

Any moderators or administrators, Please delete the janaki version as there is only a duet available.

Sorry for the inconvenience guys, let us keep the SPB choice as the official one for the time being, befor this thing get edited.

much like johnny, this film too had both BGM and songs competing feverishly with each other and the songs win by a whisker - what with SPB simply elevating the value of songs to add meaning to the movie. We have heard classical music in movies - mostly they add value but hardly convey any emotion and help movie carry forward - in this movie, the classically tuned songs were all
1 - in thamizh
2. rendered with so much emotion that the actors lip syncing it had to do simply nothing - because SPB and S.Janaki with Raaja had done everything in the recording studio itself.
3. One album where I felt Bharathiraaja could have done more than his best effort (which he had put in) to do justice to the songs. Offcourse a big turn off is to see Radha as a classical dancer and the blind lead played by some lanky guy(not that I have anything against Lanky guys) with no acting experience - hashing all the efforts of SPB and Raaja. In spite of Velli salangaigal and Sangeedha jaadhi mullai (simply recollecting the song - the way SPB catches the aeroplane with a slow raise of the volume in voice!!! causes the hairs along my ears and cheeks to stand up in awe!!) I voted for Nadhiyil aadum.. thats due to SPB for teaching me how to sing the word 'Thaamarai' with a gentle sway and glide - a hindusthani way of singing a carnatic based song... DELIGHTFUL!!!

I cannot even imagine how it would have been had BR accepted the offer to direct shankarAbharaNam (which then went to K Viswanath who made it phenomenal and followed up with sAgara sangamam / swAthi muthyam, nice treats for both music & visual lovers). My cousin used to remark that had BR directed that movie, the minor love-thread involving Rajalakshmi would have been blown to 75% of the time neglecting the Somayajulu part, thus killing the whole jeevan.

After losing that opportunity, BR perhaps wanted to show-off that he can also do a great classical-musical and failed miserably (despite great support from IR / SPB / SJ). This is one of the movie genres where BR totally failed (and KB proved >> BR with sindhu bhairavi later).
