Just returned from watching the latest Bond movie.

Burning questions:

Can Daniel sustain
Will QoS be as good as Casino Royale
Are Bond movies outdated?

ha ha! you are qucik Yoga. :D

1. the opening sequence is
a. much shorter
b. quite straight forward
c. related to the main storyline

thus one begins with disappointment,

2. immediately after the opening sequence we await the fantastic 007 music.
again we are disappointed  when the much loved adrenalin pumping music is no longer there.

3. bond, james bond
this immortal line is not there either! :x

4. shaken not stirred... :sigh2: expecting this would be silly.

I liked "Casino royale". And from what I hear, I'd like QoS a little less. Daniel Craig has made us forget Brosnan, and in many ways, brought substance to the character, no surprise for I consider him a capable actor.

And from what I hear, QoS looks, and feels like Greengrass's Bourne series. The good ol' bond style, and the fun is lost, apparently. I'm not complaining. :P

thilak, if you liked CR, you will certainly enjoy QoS. where he lacks in much-expected-wit-from-bond, he makes up with his body language. he gives a completely different make over to bond and there is no use comparing him with previous bonds.

The story for those who want to know....

CONTAINS SPOILERS

'Quantum of Solace' continues the high octane adventures of James Bond from 'Casino Royale'. Picking up literally days where the previous film left off, after being betrayed by Vesper, the woman he loved, 007 fights the urge to make his latest mission personal. Having captured Mr. White, and in pursuing his determination to uncover the truth, Bond and 'M' interrogate Mr. White who reveals the organisation which blackmailed Vesper to steal Bond's casino winnings is far more complex and dangerous than anyone had imagined.

Forensic intelligence links an MI6 traitor to a bank account in Haiti where a case of mistaken identity introduces Bond to the beautiful but feisty Camille, a woman who has her own vendetta. Camille leads Bond straight to Dominic Greene, a ruthless business man and major force within the mysterious criminal organisation known only as 'Quantum'.

On a mission that leads him to Austria, Italy and South America, Bond discovers that Greene, conspiring to take total control of one of the worlds most important natural resources, is forging a deal with the exiled General Medrano. Using his associates in the organisation, and manipulating his powerful contacts within the CIA and the British government, Greene promises to overthrow the existing regime in a nameless Latin American country, giving General Medrano control of the country in exchange for a seemingly barren piece of land which is, however, a main source of the South American water supply.

In a minefield of treachery, murder and deceit, Bond allies with old friends in a battle to uncover the truth. As he gets closer to finding the man responsible for the betrayal of Vesper, 007 must keep one step ahead of the CIA, the terrorists, and even 'M' herself, to unravel Greene's sinister plan and stop Quantum from getting its way.

Didn't see CR, so I am missing some pieces in QoS.

I was able to piece together the whole revenge thingie, but the last scene was blank for me. For instance, what does he mean when he tells M she was right about Vesper ? Something in CR ?

Another thing I didn't get is, why does Felix help Bond ?

A little too much action IMO.

But a very engrossing watch, nevertheless.

In one interview Tarantino mentioned that Action directors are the "true" filmmakers - in that the exploit the medium's possibilities to the fullest.Stunt Choreographers + Director + Editors may have gone through hell piecing this movie. I was floored by the Siena scenes. They did the cutting to two different things elsewhere in the film too. With equally good effect.

Not deeply into Bond. Went without much expectations and enjoyed the film a lot.

Heard it hasn't released in the US yet !!

For instance, what does he mean when he tells M she was right about Vesper ? Something in CR ?In CR JB says, "The B*** is dead."
But in QoS, it seems he cannot forget her and M believes that JB is merely seeking revenge.

Another thing I didn't get is, why does Felix help Bond ?According to the books, Felix and Bond are bosom buddies and appear together in a few books, esp when the happenings are in the US. Felix is US Secret Service agent.

Not deeply into Bond. Went without much expectations and enjoyed the film a lot.I guess ordinary fans will enjoy it but Bond fans have certain expectations and for them this is not your typical Bond film.

Heard it hasn't released in the US yet !! Yes. Releases there on Nov 14 to coincide with their peak season.
It may interest you that ALL Bond movies are British. And QoS has already been screened in UK.

[tscii:78d265c314]Didn't know there is a separate thread on QOS...I am reposting my links here :

If CR is a legitimate standalone film, would QOS be Godfather II, or Star Wars: TESB? Well, sadly it would be Superman II…which is not bad, but not as good as the first.

Where do I start? Allow me to break it into elements that we normally would like to look out for in the Bond films.

Script.
Convoluted? Nope, pretty straight forward…a slight rehash of LTK, its padded with more action sequences that actually slows down the progress of the story…which is not that great either. Problem is, in CR they had great source material to work it and in QOS, they had to go back to cooking their own little dish. And this time, its revenge dish…not necessarily the first time in the films history. Not entirely original, since Fleming dealt with it in YOLT, and the filmmakers had earlier dealt with it in LTK (I am pretending that Brosnan Bond never happened, so to hell with TWINE etc).

Speaking of LTK, in QOS, M asks Bond to hand over the weapon, then Bond escapes by kicking the MI6 dudes, and jump over the balcony. Is that Déjà vu or the scriptwriters were just plain lazy.

So, you have a pretty so and so script to work with, and the problem is tossed to…

Direction
Forster did a good job, when the scenes are quiet, introspective, exploring a bit of Bond’s psyche. Marred by overlong and too frequent action scenes, this could have made a more intelligent film if there were more brainwork, instead of gunwork, involved in what could have been a wonderful sequel to CR. I hear Forster might return to Bond 23, so I hope he would pay more attention to the criticism on the action scenes, and help to come up with stronger, more intelligent film.

Action
Bourne? Before Greengrass there was Bruckheimer, Bay and West. At that time (90s seems far away now), the style was referred to as “MTV style of quick cutting and shooting”. Shaky cam included. And for you kids out there, go and watch The Rock, and you know what I mean.

And it’s the same feeling I get watching this film. Slam, bang, crashes, breaking of glasses (like one reviewer said, too many glasses were broken during the making of this film), running, shooting, jumping, thumping, spinning (on the rope), explosions, fire, its all there. My fiancé was gripping my hand during those scenes. Alas, it was the grip that kept me on focus. I was not interested most of the time. I just wanted the quieter scene.

I never say this to anyone, but I want to say this to the editor: “You are wrong”. We care about what happens to Bond during this scene. We want to see him to know if he is in pain, if he is suffering, if he likes the killing or not, if he has moments of doubt, if he cares for his life or not…none of this can be seen during these action sequences. In between milliseconds you see grim, cold face of Bond’s doing his thang.

Music.
Contrary to popular belief, there is Bond theme interspersed throughout the film. That’s a good thing. The bad thing is Arnold is still one board. He has to go. His sound evokes irrepressible awful memories of the four Brosnan/Bonds (it happened…not it didn’t…it did…). This is a rebooted Bond. This is a different world. It’s like listening to Dmitri Tiomkin in a Clint Eastwood movie.

Take a bow Arnold. Maybe the producers are nice. Please don’t take advantage of other’s generosity. Move on.

And I don’t even want to talk about the turd that is the theme song. But then, there has been many animal faeces disguised as theme songs in the history of Bond films.

Characters.
Supporting.

Leiter and Mathis are a joy. It’s good to have them back…and yes, they could have longer screentime. I want to see Bond palling around with them a lot more. There are more fun with scenes of Bond with these two then all the action scenes of both CR and QOS combined. Almaric’s Greene is boring. When he stands on top of the balcony and gives that speech, you see Carver, you see Graves (Brosnan Bond did not happen…did not happen). The others were there, I don’t know. I don’t care. Gemma Atherton is total waste. Why was she there? Why was her character sent to bring Bond back? Why not some tough agents…like they did in LTK. Oh, the scriptwriters were probably scared that they are accused of stealing ideas from past. Too late, dudes….

Main characters.
Camille.
Boring. My fiancé said, for a Bond girl, she is pretty plain looking. Well, it didn’t bother me none. But she did not add to the movie. No glamour, no danger. Nothing.

M.
Dench’s M should go. She is incompetent, emotional, insecure, insipid, and basically an idiot (betrayed by agent working 8 years with her). One scene she asks Bond, “How come we didn’t know about this organisation”? I wanted Bond to say, “It’s because you are incredibly stupid, you old hag!”

Why does she have to tag around Bond, travelling all those places? Is she in charge of Bond only? Doesn’t she have other important task to do back in the office? Also, looking at her facial expression most of the time, is she suffering from internal haemorrhage? Also, instead of the pleasure of having a Bond girl in her bathroom, we have M in her bathroom this time. What is happening, dudes?

I understand Dench is known to be an excellent actress (I prefer others, I find Dench to be dull…but then incredible dullness have been mistaken for great performance, so its just a matter of opinion). So, dear producers give her a rest. Let M go and look after an orphanage or something. Get someone more professional. I don’t care if it’s a woman, man, transvestite or a fat orange Tabby.

Bond.

Ah…the glue. The one element that holds the whole movie together. Daniel Craig is James Bond. He owns the role now. Anyone out there claiming to be Bond should be arrested and made to watch all Brosnan Bond films over and over again (no, it did not happen).

HE brings dignity to the role. He brings nobility to the role. He is not exactly Fleming’s Bond. He need not be Fleming’s Bond. Dalton was Fleming’s Bond. Connery was the ultimate movie Bond. Craig now has the advantage of being both.

Forster and the scriptwriters committed a terrible crime by not allowing Bond to have more moments for himself. More moments to reveal himself to the audience. Why a crime? Because they are using a wonderful actor. But Craig made best use of what material he has…and he added to it. I don’t mind seeing him doing even mundane things like making coffee or explaining to his maid that his eggs must be boiled three and a half minutes. That would be more exciting than the badly cut car chase in the beginning.

I beg the producers to keep Craig for more movies. If he asks more money, pay him. If he asks for a small Latin America country, negotiate with the dictator and get it for him (the scriptwriters can help, they are pretty good with the dictator thingy). I am watching this film for Craig again.

And thanks to Craig, I am giving this film 6/10 rating.

Movie is an out an out action thriller. Daniel craig is so badass. Much convincing as a Bond. He is so ruthless and remorseless :P. Sorry ya fellas Bond is no more the gadget savvy and flirty type. Welcome to the new era of bond films. He is bound to kick ass and ass and ass.

I would guess the movie is already a big hit here. 25 freakkin shows in a day and all of em mostly house full. I liked this much better than Casino Royale, Thanks to the action scenes. Movie was never and I say never was boring which is what is most expected of this genre films.

Daniel craig is here to stay. I may watch it again.

Daniel Craig is by far the only Bond one can take seriously. It was an excellent movie in terms of setting the stage for the follow-ups (Quantum is the new Spectre) and performances. Judi Dench plays one of the most involved M's and Craig's indifferent dialog delivery just adds to his perceived coldness. I liked the little symmetry of having Bond save Kurylenko from fire in light of him having lost Eva in the water. All in all a well spent 12 dollars.

Agreed. But Bond is not a regular action or a regualar hero figure , he is a super agent , and deadliest spy in Mi-6. I bet my money one more movie of this sort. Daniel craig is out of this franchise. thatz far sure.

Again Casion Royale , he was just too good for that role. Infact the only other bond who came close roger interms of mass appeal.

QOS -> was a big let down.
1) This was not a full fledge regular Bond script which Ian wrote

2) This was short story (like many others Live at 5, Blast from past and for your eyes only james , others) If I recollect rite only The living daylight other short story which was turned in to movie even that bombed.. at box office.
I just to add
I think even octopussy other exceptional short story which did well.

[tscii:f319d521d8]Dilbert, read your review on the other thread, you should repost it here. You are right, QOS is a big let down.

A correction, The Living Daylights did not bomb. It did exceptionally well, on top of its predecessor A View To A Kill which did poorly. It’s the follow-up, Licence To Kill which did poorly in the US (tough competition with Indiana Jones, Batman, Die Hard, Lethal Weapon – they call it the summer of bloodbath).

You said:
“There was a reason why they didn't make this movie as sequel to original Casino royale. When they had 3 stories to pick from ! Even Ian himself agreed to this ..!”

Don’t understand. What did you mean by original Casino Royale? The ’54 version? Which three stories do you mean? After the first novel, it was followed by Live & Let Die, Moonraker and Diamonds Are Forever…all standalone stories.

1) Your are rite its License to Kill which replaced Timothy Dalton with peirce brosnan

2) Original Casiono Royale was Released in 1967 And not 1954 .

I was refering to the original script which Ian wrote for this Casiono royale television series in 1954/55 CBS televised this script as part of its Television Series called Climax! which was an instant hit and they wanted him to continue with more to that epsoide, it was believed to be that he had 3 stories. at that time Which he himself felt that will not work.

Charcater James Bond = was referred as Jimmy Bond.

And in 1967 MGM brought the rights from CBS and turned in to an Movie - Rest is history !

My Review :

This got to be a very unique and exceptional movie in Bond Franchise
coming from Director Marc Forster - > this subject completely different league, from is previous venture" The Kite Runner" he did a good job

Bond after winning the high stakes poker tournament Casino Royale in Montenegro and loosing his friend (or the only Bond girl he feel in love with). And we all remember he standing at Mr.White's house with gun.

The opening scene of Quantum of Solace was heart breaking scene for me to see the same Austin Martin.. which I really loved.. got smashed and doors rip opened in the opening car chase.. which was stunning But not as gripping as Casino Royale's opening chasing on construction site. Then he drags out Mr.White from his car and we get to see M and her colleagues waiting for bond in Italy.. Thatz the first frame where you get to see the bond or I should say a Blue eyed Killing machine..with heart filled with vengeance. for a minute I couldn't believe my own eyes that 00-Mi6 top agent who has license to kill was killing out of emotions not with a purpose. That was an interesting angle. But that very same view kind of let's down whole "Importance of BOND" the secret agent.

This leads to, Mi6 trying to put a stop on bonds movement and he turns Mathis who he thought was a double agent. Mathis agrees to help. Movie moves to Italy,Bolivia, and other European destination. And finally ends in Russia Where he meets Vesper Lynd boyfriend who would have set her up to get the winning to the organisation (and thatz the last point of Bond's revenge)

Main Plot : - Villan trying to negotiate between developed countries and developing countries leaders to take control of last biggest oil reserve in the world in Bolivia (or perhaps the only water source of Boliva).
Ford has displayed all its small cars and land rover !! No Bond Girl, No Car for Bond. Dainel craig was more of an angry lover and less of Bond.

He even forget this signature cocktail .. mix - in a scene he will ask bartender to explain that to Mathis..

Let me remind him , Mr. Bond - it is "A dry martini,One. In a deep champagne goblet." Three measures of Gordon's, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it's ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon peel.

For me This Movie is a big let down as a sequel for Casino Royale. !

Hope Bond comes back with next assignment which needs him as a secret agent And not as anything else. !

I don't want to claim that I am an expert in Bond history.. There was a reason why they didn't make this movie as sequel to original Casino royale. When they had 3 stories to pick from ! Even Ian himself agreed to this ..!

For this Action Flick - > We can push it to.. ***1/2 (Good)
