View Full Version : Unventured styles of music by Raja

As we all discuss the music scientist's prowess, i feel there are certain types of music he has not explored. Such as metallic music which i think raja is the best bet to bring a harmony with a indianised tune.

Anyone has any wishes in this aspect of what type of music they feel the music scientist should bring in? My personal wish is metallic /hard rock music. There is a high chance if a urban movie comes to raja he might venture into this provided the situation is right. The closest use was the high tempo strumming of the electric guitar for a bgm sequence in cheeni kum.

There are some more closests

Rock on with 'Maanguyiley Poonguyile' (http://www.mediafire.com/?mnzjdmzzdec) from Shivashankar & Teen Age'la (http://www.mediafire.com/?htzyzzfnnmw) from Devan :)

There was also 'Rasigane En Arugil Vaa' from 'Manipur mamiyaar' which can be said as closer to Hard Rock.

[tscii:d3de806811]Shri.Ilayaraaja has done several rock, rock & roll, swing compositions in 80s.

heavy guitaring, loud drums, repeated patterns of rhythms, raucous vocals

http://www.raaga.com/playerV31/index.asp?pick=88942&mode=3&rand=0.9226526615253344&bhcp=1

sing swing ..... in MOODUPANI.

baby babe........kaali.

of course everybody knows and enjoys

‘pottu vaitha kaadhal....’- singaravelavan and ‘Megam kottatum...’- Enakkul Oruvan.

He has done lots of SCAT(Scat is a vocal style often used in both jazz and swing in which singers improvise nonsense syllables instead of lyrics as part of the melody)/RIFF(A riff is a musical phrase that is repeated over and over until it becomes almost hypnotic)/ SWING
like
- with DENSE rhythm Thattom thalangu - Vetri Vizha

Vaanam yenna.... Vetri vizha with Call & Respond melody of Blues

format, singers responding to each other with chorus scat singing and

with rhythmic beats.

Does it adhere to 'BLUES NOTE' rule, I don't know! theory/format only I follow. Chord progression, I don't know!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blues

Many of them are Ilayaraaja and Kamalahaasan dance numbers.

:bluejump: :redjump:

vikram......kamalahaasan...vikram-film

http://www.oosai.com/oosai_plyr/playerWin.cfm?list=169

everything has been done to perfection in the 80s itself.

It's easy for him to churn out even now.

Hulkster,
No Indian MD has ventured into heavy metal. Yuvan's "Its my life" was close but not quite the real deal. If you are talking about rock, hard rock, Ilaiyaraaja has certainly done it and how!

Styles not done would include sufi, qawwali, contemporary hip-hop etc...
And contrary to popular opinion, many confuse jazz with blues, almost to the point of interchanging one with the other in usage (though its derivatives are jazz, rock n roll etc) and in that sense, blues is relatively less explored in general, though one may find semblances of it in Indian film music.

There is a piece of BGM that i don't remember too well, aana kettappa it sounded a bit like blues. Raaja padam. Johhny-a, illa vera padama nu doubt. Thats why i didn't/couldn't give any specific examples in my last post and i safely worded it as "relatively less explored" just in case....

"Spiderman, spiderman" - New (the opening riffs... its not blues but could have been blues) What do you think? Olarreno?

What genre does nagooru pakkathula nammaloda pettai fall into? Bhangra? Qawwali? Rendume illai - aanalum rendume irukkunnum sollalam

And what genre does 'Ada Maappillai' from 'Siva' and 'Sorgathil Nikka' from 'Rajasthan' fall under (Just Revisited the song and finding it has got some middle eastern flavor too!)

Rajasthan (http://www.mediafire.com/?zdzuloluvnt) was a much dissed album by one of the Hubber long back, due to his influence and the preconceived notion that its a dud album i've not listened to it much. Today When Iam revisiting the album 'right now' it seems excellent. The orchestrations are top-notch and every single song is great. It seems true that we cant find Raaja's music instead his music will find and dawn on us unexpectedly.

Hulkster,
listen to the 2nd interlude of 'Machan Machan' it has some traces of 'Hard Rock'.
'Pennendral' is total 'Jazz Bliss' wowwww....is one word that came out just listening to the 2nd interlude...Listen to the violins & Flutes going Jazzy (so technically He has composed a Jazz even before 'MX').
'Jai Jawan' is Western Classical.
'jinjillara' has 'Jazz', 'Folk' and many other things which are hard to point towards a particular Genre and same applies to 'Sorgathil Nikka'

Its hard to believe he has packed so many genres in this single album and one condescending hubber was backward in time while Raaja was forward  the Reason that these small pleasures Raaja gives to me, Iam becoming more and more 'Fanatic' over him

So metallic music is still largely unventured into. Pardon me but i think metallic music can merge well with indianish tunes and i feel raja must try this.

What others he has not tried? I think electronica(made famous by vangelis) is one more genre he has not tried.

If anyone plays close attention to inimey naangathaan theres alot of genres involved as well. Vaazhuvu Venduma is certainly middle eastern.

Twinkle Twinkle little star has one number "salsalakkum kaatrey" which sounds middle eastern(qawwali?).

Vidungappa...i do know how many fans here are quick to diss alot of albums raja has done post his golden era. I have seen the film before and was surprised to see raja there as the film composer cause the numbers were really different.

In one of the singing competitions (or was it an interview) SPB sang the notes of post lude guitar solo of "en iniya pon nilavey" and he observed that it is actually blues under disguise.

Dhool boys have posted some amazing JAZZ articles with examples. Venkat have stated some outstanding examples from MSV-TKR. He is indeed GREAT.

There are several songs which IR adheres to the definitions of those genres like jazz, rock, rock and roll, blues etc... with usage of instruments( BLUE NOTE RULE, that I don't know)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blues

Some authentic examples from Indian cinema for you,
mullilroja....kalaikoil....LRE with PBS.... check out composer MSV-TKR.
Varavendum oru pozhudhu...-Kalai Koyil... EXQUISITE BEAUTY, aesthetic harmonic embellishment, Repetition to heighten the effect of the sentimental longing of the vocalist ... LRE... amazing crooner

Heavy metal by IR? How about "Edakku mudakkana" from Kalaignan? Is it hard-rock or heavy metal?

baroque
5th February 2009, 01:17 AM
Edakku...... I assumed it is HARD ROCK. high energy rhythm and IT HAS SOME MELODIC STRUCTURE. It is still not in your face.

don't you think HEAVY METAL is lot more crazy, guitar riffs and vocals are outrageous. extreme tempo shifts, pounding drums?

poo maalai oru ..... Thanga magan......Shri.Ilayaraaja.

The format is exactly following the Blues melody & rhythms like vaazha vaikkum......Aboorva sagodharargal or vaa vaa pakkam vaa....

1. Call and respond melody of singers responding to each other.
2. Scat singing and sonic, rhythmic gestures to reinforce the vocalists.
3. Instrumentation in the orchestration drum kit, trumpet, guitars, background vocalists.(In the song poo maalai...except a untraditional usage of Indian percussion by time 2:17- 2:37 in the interlude)

Refer the definition here,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blues

Now I don't know whether Shri.Ilayaaraja's compositions Blues and rhythms melodies vaa vaa pakkam vaa or poo maalai.... following the format have BLUE notes.

my Ipod in shuffle mode picked this (http://www.mediafire.com/?zfymomtmzzm) up for me today. Can we call it a 'Qawwali?!!

complicateur
5th February 2009, 11:14 AM
RS,
Definitely qawwali (interesting that it starts with AnAnap patta sivanE in the lyrics). As I was listening to it I had a sort of epiphany. vA veNNilA from Mella Thiranthathu is very qawwali (at least in the orchestration). Of course the song is as much MSV's as it is rAjA's.

baroque

RS ,
Indeed composition carries all the essential elements of QAWWALI.
But it has two lead singers in a conversational/Q&A type melody.

typical QAWWALI COMPOSITION HAS ONE LEAD SINGER WITH A theme emphasising, ensures the mood of the composition.

AAYIRAM PENMAI MALARATTUM....Shri.MSV.....Musical Ecstasy.
Brilliance of this composer is he embraces the best of the best attribute of the particular genre music, deliver to the masses with out diluting the standards. love it!

PARDA HAI PARDA........AMAR AKBAR ANTHONY.....LAXMIKANT PYARELAL

singalaththu .....punnagai mannan... has qawwali beats touches.
from time 2:22 second interlude. orchestration லே மட்டும் போட்டுடறார், ir

Where do we begin with Rahman's qawwali musical wonders? love, longing, devotion, joy and more more... Rahman's musical MAGIC has no bounds.

Thanks CR. Yes, I think the opening guitar riffs sets up nicely, although I'm beginning to scratch my head on blues. Much to do with the fusion as well. It has become something of sort "I know when I hear it". :)

:ty: very much Vinatha. I'll bookmark Dhool.com

And thanks much for the various songs you had listed. As I said to CR, I'm going to assert as I hear it. "Blue notes" complicates in context of Indian fusion, but any semblance to Blues would do, I think.I'm no big expert in categorizing them, although I'm familiar with country blues and blues rock ( this is a tricky genre as well, PF fans here should be familiar with PF's "More blues" from OST of More).

great jazz style song, mixing the feel of "vennila vennila" from Iruvar and "Niram pirithu" from Time. I think it can be called "big band jazz".
