SRK to The Telegraph - Calcutta

What about the international players?

(Chris) Gayle will be here till May 3. He will play at least eight to nine matches. David Hussey is there... we hope he is not selected for the Aussie Test team. I know that’s a bad thing to say (laughs). Then there’s (Brendon) McCullum who will be there fully... We have seen the kind of form he is in right now. Ajantha (Mendis) is there throughout. Dada (Sourav Ganguly, of course) will get to practise from the 16th. You know, more than the game, in Twenty20, it is about the team spirit. John is very realistic about our chances. He says that we should aim to be in the last four and then see what happens. [tscii:c36a971aaa][/tscii:c36a971aaa]

Shoaib made a brief, though spectacular, contribution to the inaugural IPL after signing with the Kolkata Knight Riders for a reported US$425,000. In his first game against the Delhi Daredevils, the Pakistani tearaway claimed figures of 4-11, but played just two more games thereafter before again being struck down by injury.

"It was a dramatic comeback for me," he recalled. "I had been going through so much with the five-year ban [for breaching the PCB's code of conduct, later overturned], and to go out there and play again was one of the hardest things I have had to do in my life. But it was a fantastic experience. Shah Rukh Khan, Sourav Ganguly and the whole team management really helped me a lot, and the Kolkata fans were very supportive. I had gone through a lot of mental trauma and was mentally not quite right going in, but they did a lot to help me."

[tscii:8e65b9f9a9]Buchanan has his way; Ganguly sacked as captain

Zeecric Bureau

Kolkata, March 25: Kolkata Knight Rider cricket manager John Buchanan dropped a bombshell on Wedneday, when at a press-conference, he announced that India’s most successful Test captain ever- Sourav Ganguly would not be leading Shah Rukh Khan owned franchisee’s campaign in the second season of the Indian Premier League.

“Ganguly and I have talked about it yesterday,” he said. “There will be no fixed captain.”

A crestfallen Ganguly tried to betray his emotions, putting up a brave face, even as Buchanan made the announcement. “I am not upset,” Ganguly said. “My goal is to score runs and take wickets.” This is a unique concept,” he added, saying “John has the right to implement his own methods.”

According to the new blue print, the team will also have a separate batting captain and a fielding captain. While the batting captain would decide team’s batting order during the match, the fielding captain would be in charge for all on-field activities during the match.

Eloberating on his plan, Buchanan said: “I really think in the course of this 20-over tournament we have the capacity to have the team coach, Matthew Mott, running the batting side of things. If we have to change the batting order or change personnel to fit a certain situation, then that is something that could fall under his control.”

"Once on the field, we have some very good leaders there in Chris Gayle, Brendon McCullum, Brad Hodge and Sourav Ganguly. The laws of the game state that you need a captain for certain formal roles, such as the coin toss, but that aside, I see there is scope to challenge the way teams have been run in the past.”

While conceding that Ganguly may not agree to him, Buchanan urged the Southpaw and the fans, to be open to his new concept.” We need to have open mind. Let’s not be judgemental. We have to give it a try.”

“In fact it could actually be of benefit to someone like him because it could free him up for his batting, when he just needs to his batting or for his fielding when he just needs to do his fielding or when he needs to just do his bowling without the burden of the twenty-over format."

Earlier, media reports had said that KKR`s director of cricket operations John Buchanan was not keen on including Ganguly in the team for the coming IPL season in South Africa, as he was unhappy with the ex Indian captain`s fitness.

Two days after Buchanan raised doubts about Ganguly`s captaincy of the side, the left hander held a meeting with the former Aussie coach though there was not much indication over the ice melting between the two.

Buchanan had created a flutter Sunday with his remarks that the KKR was yet to decide on the leadership issue.

Ganguly, who quit international cricket in 2008 amid much-fanfare, had a famous show down with Greg Chappell, when the latter was India’s coach. Buchanan too hasn’t shared best of relationships with his protégés, falling off with spin legend Shane Warne during his tenure as an Australian coach.

Knight Riders move set to sideline Ganguly

Kolkata: John Buchanan's new mantra for Twenty20 cricket was put out on Wednesday after the Kolkata Knight Riders announced here that they would adopt a policy of engaging multiple captains during the second edition of the Indian Premier League.

Buchanan, who has often been seen as the most successful international cricket coach after having taken the Aussies to three World Cup title triumphs, told a packed press conference that there won't necessarily be a fixed captain for the Kolkata team this season.

"We will choose the captain depending on the game. There can be multiple team captains in the series," he added.

"If I was Sourav I would be upset. He is the king of Kolkata and he has achieved everything that evrybody has been saying. But he is also a fine person beyond that. I don't think he fully agrees with what has been happening but he is open," he added.

The announcement only added fuel to an already raging hot debate over whether Sourav Ganguly should be replaced as skipper, after news of New Zealand wicketkeeper-batsman Brendon McCullum was on Monday reported to have been tipped for the top job there.

Wednesday's announcement though not an axing, indicates quite strongly the fate that may befall Ganguly in the coming days, much like the way it has in the case of Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman.

SRK backs Dada; still KKR’s main man

Zeecric Bureau

Kolkata, March 26: A day after Kolkata Knight Rider’s team manager John Buchanan announced in a press conference that his team would be doing away with the concept of Sourav Ganguly as a fixed captain during the forthcoming second season of the Indian Premier League, franchisee owner and Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan came out in support of India’s most successful Test skipper.

Backing Ganguly as the leader of the team, Shah Rukh said that “Ganguly is still our main man” and stressed that “no one was taking the captaincy away from Ganguly.”

Shah Rukh also clarified to a private news channel that “all decisions would be taken with Ganguly’s consent.”

In an apparent bid to avoid undermining Buchanan’s stance, Shah Rukh conceded that he was not averse to experiments and that “new ideas should be tried.”

Buchanan’s decision to experiment with a policy of rotation of captaincy had attracted severe criticism from within the cricketing fraternity, including from South African coach Mickey Arthur. Many experts felt that such a situation would lead to confusion amongst players.

Ganguly, who is a cult figure in India and enjoys frenzied admiration in his home town Kolkata had told reporters that Buchanan had not consulted him before heralding the radical changes to Kolkata Knight Riders team set-up.

Ganguly not fully convinced by Buchanan theory

March 26, 2009

Sourav Ganguly has made it clear that he is not completely convinced about John Buchanan's multiple-captain theory for Kolkata Knight Riders, the IPL team he led last year. Ganguly claimed that he was not consulted about the plan and said he doubted whether other players in the team were aware of the new theory.

On Wednesday, Ganguly had said at a press conference that he was not upset with Buchanan's plans that would drastically dilute his powers as a sole captain. But later, the former India captain indicated in interviews that he did not fully back the idea.

"Tomorrow I can jump out and say we need four batting coaches, four John Buchanans and Shah Rukh Khan can say we need six Andy Bichels," Ganguly told NDTV. "These are all opinions; these are the way they are thinking how Twenty20 cricket can be played. We'll have to wait and see because it's completely new, it has never happened in sports."

Ganguly said that he came to know of his team coach's plans through the media. "On Tuesday, John mooted the idea to me," Ganguly told Times of India. "All I can say is that I was not consulted on this. Frankly, it's a new concept. It may work, it may not. There are no guarantees in sport."

Ganguly, who retired from international cricket last year, said he hoped to discuss the concept with the other international players in the squad, including Chris Gayle and Brendon McCullum, before the IPL starts in South Africa on April 18. Buchanan has identified Gayle, McCullum, Brad Hodge and David Hussey as the potential leaders in the side, apart from Ganguly.

"Frankly speaking, I doubt whether the likes of McCullum or Gayle too would have heard about such a concept," Ganguly said. "I am sure it will be new to them. At least, I have never been part of a team with four captains. We all need to first find out how it works."

CAPTAINCY ISSUES NEWS FROM THE IPL FRANCHISE
‘Skipper’ Sourav resurfaces
Dada Still The Man In Charge In KKR Practice Session
TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Kolkata: On Wednesday, sitting besides ‘cricket scientist’ John Buchanan, he looked dejected. On Thursday, Sourav Ganguly’s body language was a picture of contrast. In his own characteristic way, he made a point to everyone who was watching: That he was not yet ready to throw in the towel. During the Kolkata Knight Riders training session on Thursday, the swagger was back in Sourav’s attitude.
Since retirement from international cricket in November, Sourav has played in just one firstclass and three List A matches for Bengal.
He has also practised at the KKR nets, but has never looked as involved in the past five months during a training session as on Thursday.
The spring in his strides, the urgency shown while running between the wickets with a greenhorn like Arindam Ghosh, all showed that Dada is gearing up for yet another challenge.
The manner in which he ran a three with Ghosh, who is almost 15 years junior, spoke volumes about his never-say-die spirit.
During their ‘two-a-side match’, where Laxmi Ratan Shukla and Sourav Sarkar were teamed up against Arindam and Sourav, the leader in Ganguly was again on display.
May be he had a point to prove to the bespectacled big-bodied Aussie who had stationed himself at square-leg, keeping a keen eye on the Prince of Kolkata.
Buchanan, whose startling theory has made everyone sit up and put on their thinking cap, kept a watch on the proceedings after having joined the session around an hour late.
Later, the manner in which Sourav changed field placings (there weren’t too many of them) and even pushed the net bowlers to strive for extra pace, it appeared as if Ganguly the inspirational leader was back at the helm.
When he batted, he hit a few fantastic shots, the standout being a six over extra-cover off Shukla. However, he was occasionally troubled by short deliveries.
It has been learnt that some of the Indian players like Shoaib Sheikh, Aakash Chopra and Cheteswar Pujara will be joining practice from Friday after the team management of the Kolkata franchise realized that due to lack of players, the training is getting hampered.
Fans burn Buchanan’s effigies: A few Sourav fans burnt effigies of Buchanan as a mark of protest against his decision of ‘demoting’ Sourav into a ‘joint captain’.
The protest lasted for around half an hour.
KKR players to don new jersey:
The Kolkata Knight Riders players will be seen wearing a brand new design created by renowned Bollywood designer Manish Malhotra.
It has been learnt that though black and gold will be two dominant colours there will be white and grey shades in addition to it.

Kolkata to have one captain and many 'strategists'

March 31, 2009

The Kolkata Knight Riders have tried to put a lid on the controversy generated by John Buchanan's theory of multiple captains by releasing a statement that during a game the team would resort to a group of "strategists" who would report to one on-field captain while making decisions.

This move could be seen as a climbdown from coach Buchanan's plan for more than one captain on the field but arguably the only difference now is that the term "captain" has been replaced by "strategist".

Despite this latest decision, team sources have told Cricinfo that a compromise formula could lead to Sourav Ganguly captaining the team in the first five games after which, based on the team's position, the role will be open to others.

After Buchanan's radical theory stirred a controversy on the eve of the team's departure to South Africa, Ganguly and Buchanan met at the residence of their franchise owner Shah Rukh Khan. Jai Mehta, who owns a stake in the team, was also present at the nearly four-hour long meeting.

"Needless to say the term 'multi-captains' has raised a few eyebrows and questions. The idea is to have a set of strategists as is always the case classically in cricket, who will form a team of 4 to 5 core experts in the field of fielding, bowling, batting and data, etc," the statement read. "These coaches or strategists will assist the one captain on field with their viewpoints on the game-plan set earlier or shoot from the hip as the case maybe."

The statement stressed that there would be only one captain, who would be fed with suggestions from this core group of strategists. "The captain for the team is one and only one as in the case of most sports. Just the roles which are there in the regular format of the game as the fielding expert, batting coaches, are being better defined to be able to give quick suggestions ... All internal decisions are taken collectively by the core cricketing team which comprises John, Sourav, Matthew Mott (assistant coach) and a few others."

The management has also made it clear that a final decision on the captain will only be taken after the team's camp in South Africa. "As the team is not decided because of overseas venue changes, etc ... we will take the call on the issue of captain, vice-captain, the team, post the sessions in South Africa, prior to the first game. Reason for doing so is not to shirk the issue of who is the captain but to announce all that together to make that a cohesive decision from the team management to avoid confusion like it has resulted right now," the statement said.

Kolkata will be training at Bloemfontein from April 5 and players will leave in various batches starting today.

Time to move on: Ganguly

KOLKATA: Sourav Ganguly is keen to focus on the future after the recent controversy over the multiple captain issue.

“It’s time to move on. Everybody is professional. Everybody wants to live up to expectations. We did not have a good tournament last year. We have to ensure we play better cricket this time,” Ganguly said here on Thursday.

Ganguly said he would prefer to forget the past and focus on the future. “Whatever happened on the captaincy issue is not new in sports. I am sure it will happen in future as well,” he said. “As professionals, we need to put this behind and look forward to playing in South Africa.” — Special Correspondent

Shah Rukh Khan lashes back at Gavaskar

April 5, 2009

Shah Rukh Khan, owner of the Kolkata Knight Riders, has hit back at Sunil Gavaskar over his comments about franchise coach John Buchanan, and asked Gavaskar to stay away from issues concerning his IPL team.

In his column for the Hindustan Times, Gavaskar termed Buchanan a "failed former cricketer making a living telling international players to do what he couldn't do". It has not gone down well with the IPL franchise, which last week tried to put a lid on the controversy generated by Buchanan's theory of multiple captains by releasing a statement that during a game the team would resort to a group of "strategists" who would report to one on-field captain while making decisions.

Khan has come to Buchanan's defence, saying there was a marked difference in the time Gavaskar played and now. "I respect Mr Gavaskar - his knowledge about cricket is a billion times better than me," Khan told reporters in Mumbai. "But this is an era where Mr Gavaskar has not indulged in; nevertheless his knowledge about the game does allow him to make comments.

"This is a new format that's being tried out. Please give it some breathing space. I am the owner of the team, I bought it. If he wants to implement something, let him buy a team."

Gavaskar was scathing of Buchanan in his column, saying the former Australian coach had a way with words in India, a country Gavaskar said had few people capable of defusing opinion makers. "To comment on his multiple skipper theory is to give it the importance it doesn't deserve but what does require comment is how he has got his Queensland pals lucrative jobs with KKR," wrote Gavaskar. "They have a very big support staff which includes his son and most of them are from Queensland. The owners - poor souls - have little idea that they are being milked."

Gavaskar also said the Indian media granted unwarranted importance to Buchanan. "In India, where the media lives by the sound bite, Buchanan is a regular," he wrote. "If the Indian media had not made him out to be a 'super coach', he would have been just another failed former cricketer making a living telling international players to do what he couldn't at the first-class level."

Buchanan's radical theory had stirred a controversy on the eve of the team's departure to South Africa, forcing a nearly four-hour long meeting between Buchanan, Sourav Ganguly, Khan and Jai Mehta, who owns a stake in the team, in Mumbai. A subsequent statement released by Kolkata stressed that there would be only one captain, who would be fed with suggestions from this core group of strategists.

McGrath slams Buchanan's multiple captaincy idea
Monday, 06 April , 2009, 22:01
Last Updated: Monday, 06 April , 2009, 22:09

New Delhi: Legendary Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath on Monday said he couldn't accept his former coach John Buchanan's theory of multiple captains stating that a team should only have one captain.

McGrath, who will be playing for Delhi Daredevils in the second edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), said that he was surprised at the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) coach's four-captain theory.

"I am not sure why he (Buchanan) has come up with this idea. I have played under him for a long time and he had a lot of such theories, maybe this is another. I think what he meant was that there should be one captain while other players should help him in decision making," said the 39-year-old Australian.

McGrath said that being a good captain was a tough job and his success depends on the team.

"I feel senior players in the team should know their role and come forward and help the captain in decision making. But at the end of the day, their should be one leader on the field and he should be accountable for all the decisions," he said.

On Sunil Gavasakar's criticism of Buchanan's idea and KKR owner Shah Rukh Khan's rejoinder, McGrath said that the media seems to be thriving on the controversy.

Ganguly among runs for KKR

Coach John Buchanan's multiple-captain strategy for the Kolkata Knight Riders does not seem to have affected Sourav Ganguly's performance - as can be seen from the side's practice tie against the Eagles in Bloemfontein on Wednesday.

Ganguly hit a brisk unbeaten 61 and was well-supported by Cheteshwar Pujara (66 not out) as KKR ran out winners by nine wickets, the Telegraph, a Kolkata-based daily reported. With the IPL getting underway on April 18, the good pre-tournament form will come as a welcome boost for Ganguly, who has lately been embroiled in a controversy surrounding Buchanan's theory.

"I don't wish to comment on the captaincy issue. But, yes, it's nice to get runs in one's first match in new conditions. However, there's a long way to go, there's plenty of work to be done," Ganguly said.

Buchanan's concept of having multiple leaders, later altered to 'one captain, many strategists' would redefine leadership in cricket. It has been on trial during these warm-up games, albeit with little success. The first two games against the same opposition on Tuesday, with Laxmi Ratan Shukla at the helm, resulted in heavy defeats - by 48 runs and four wickets respectively.

Ganguly, who sat out both those matches, replaced Aakash Chopra on Wednesday. Although it remains uncertain if the side would have a regular or rotating captain, Ganguly would no doubt have made a firm claim.

Ajit Agarkar and Charl Langeveldt also showed good form with the ball picking up two wickets apiece. However, an injury to wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha, who underwent surgery on his left thumb late on Monday, caused some concern.

"Nothing can be assumed till the stitches are removed. For now, we've just got to wait and watch," said Joy Bhattacharjya, KKR's team director.

Gayle will join camp tomorrow
A STAFF REPORTER

Calcutta: The West Indies captain Chris Gayle will join the Kolkata Knight Riders at their base in Bloemfontein on Sunday. The belligerent left-hander had missed the first edition of the Indian Premier League last year.

Fast bowler Ishant Sharma’s position will be known on Tuesday when he submits his visa application for South Africa in New Delhi. The lanky pacer was unable to submit the paperwork earlier due to the long weekend.

Therefore, post Sunday, the Knight Riders will have all their players at the camp with the exception of Ishant.

New Zealand vice-captain Brendon McCullum and the Sri Lanka duo of spinner Ajantha Mendis and all-rounder Angelo Mathews joined the camp on Thursday evening.

Knight Riders’ next warm-up match is on Saturday when they are to play amongst themselves. Friday was devoted to practice.

Sourav among runs
A STAFF REPORTER

Calcutta: The rotational captaincy on Saturday saw Brendon McCullum and Brad Hodge lead the two sides during the intra-Kolkata Knight Riders match in Bloemfontein. In a close finish, McCullum’s team won by two runs in a T20 game.

According to information received here, batting first, McCullum XI scored 190 for five. Sourav top scored with a half-century. Cheteshwar Pujara scored in the 40s while McCullum contributed in the 30s.

In reply, Hodge top scored for his team. He retired after scoring a half-century and then returned to finish in the 70s. Morne van Wyk was dismissed in the 40s.

Ajantha Mendis, playing his first match since joining the camp, took a couple of wickets for McCullum XI.

Meanwhile, Knight Riders’ next warm-up match on Tuesday against Free State will not be held as scheduled. Instead, John Buchanan and other members of the support staff have decided to play it on Monday. The opposition is still undecided. It could either be Free State or another intra-Knight Riders match could take place.

Sourav had authored an unbeaten 61 for Knight Riders in their last warm-up game, an innings which helped thrash Free State by nine wickets.

Sourav to be KKR’s ‘undisputed’ leader
K Shriniwas Rao | TNN

Mumbai: Sourav Ganguly has retired from international cricket, but still loves romancing controversies and creating debates.
Perhaps that is why even before Knight Riders announced their plans for 2009, Ganguly’s captaincy issue preceded everything else.
However, that could still be something dished out only for public consumption. Behind the curtains, in the Knight Riders’ camp, a solution has already been chalked out.
In Bloemfontein, where the team is currently practising, TOI has learnt that Sourav Ganguly has been anointed the undisputed leader once again. In other words, the former India cricketer is going to be the captain of the team as far as the Knight Riders’ public face is concerned. It is behind the scenes that the team management has worked out the idea of what was being widely perceived as a ‘multiple-captain theory’ all along.
The idea has been picked from baseball and former Australian coach John Buchanan is at the helm of it. What matters, say KKR sources, is that team owner Shah Rukh Khan is impressed with what Buchanan wants to implement and has no problems in giving the coach a go-ahead.
“In baseball, you have coaching instructions from the dugout. It is called signalling where coaches who have confidence in certain players for certain specific abilities, conspire with them as the game is on,’’ explains a team official.
It is this idea that Knight Riders might well give a try when the time comes. The basic idea is of players receiving coaching instructions from the dugout which acts as a conduit for those on the field, implementing the plans and may need changes from time to time. The coach or those who form a part of the team’s strategy, but aren’t on the field, act as the conduits.
There are also some other aspects being looked into - to have players like Brendon McCullum and David Hussey more involved in the leadership role where their key performance areas are concerned.
“Did you watch that McCullum catch? It shows how a thinking cricketer reacts. That’s precisely how we want our team to be on the field. What’s wrong in experimenting? Isn’t the whole concept of IPL an experiment itself ?’’ says the team official.

Countdown has Begun
Posted by Ankur in April 14th 2009

With five practice matches over, Sourav Gangully in blistering form and with one of the strongest line up this season with the like of Chris Gayle, Brendon McCullum, Ajanta Mendis, Brad Hodge and Mashrafe Mortaza, Kolkata Knight Riders are all set to avenge their early exit in last year’s IPL. The players are all charged up and look pretty much unaffected by the off-field contoversies regarding the captaincy issue. Unlike last year, KKR will not be hit by the absence of strike players as Chris Gayle will be the only player leaving mid season.

But the situation is not all rosy for the boys as Cheteshwar Pujara and Wriddhiman Saha, one of the most valuable players for the team have been injured right before the start of the series. Saha is down with an injury to his thumb while Pujara has hurt his knee. The team and fans wish a speedy recover to the duo and also wish them luck for the IPL.

Captaincy card is still held tight
- Collective leadership has worked: Buchanan
LOKENDRA PRATAP SAHI
Buchanan

Calcutta: The last of the Kolkata Knight Riders’ warm-up matches ended late on Tuesday, with cricket manager John Buchanan “very happy” at how his collective leadership concept had worked over the past week.

His mantra: One captain, but multiple leaders on the field and in the dressing room.

“Indeed, I’m very happy… I’m feeling good about the whole thing… The players are now aware about how it works,” Buchanan told The Telegraph, around midnight (IST), from Bloemfontein.

Asked if there still were areas which needed to be fine-tuned, he replied: “Don’t think so… The communication within has been clear and, obviously, that’s cause for satisfaction…”

Buchanan said that a full-time captain would be appointed for the IPL’s second edition, from April 18, but declined to name him. :x :x :x

“Look, we may not make an announcement till our first match (against the Deccan Chargers, on April 19)… I’d say one from among Sourav (Ganguly), Brendon McCullum, (Brad) Hodge and Chris Gayle would be the captain… That’s all from me at this stage.”

The chuckle couldn’t be missed.

Buchanan confirmed that the captaincy issue would be “discussed” with principal owner Shah Rukh Khan, when they meet in Cape Town.

Sourav, who was indisposed on Tuesday, captained the Knight Riders in the inaugural season. However, McCullum has emerged as a very strong contender.

In fact, right now, Sourav has reason to lose some sleep.

Clearly, McCullum (the New Zealand vice-captain) is set to serve the Knight Riders for much longer than Sourav, the franchise’s icon-player, whose position will be reviewed in 2010, at the end of three years.

Buchanan’s tone suggested he wasn’t at all worried about the captaincy issue, but definitely concerned about the knee injury to the in-form Cheteshwar Pujara.

“Pujara’s going for an MRI… Let’s see what the report reveals… At this stage, we aren’t sure about (Wriddhiman) Saha either,” he signed off.

The Knight Riders move out of Bloemfontein on Wednesday afternoon.

Incidentally, co-owner Jay Mehta is understood to have watched the last two warm-up matches.

Sourav unwell; :( Sarkar is coming back
A STAFF REPORTER

Calcutta: Sourav Ganguly is running mild temperature and didn’t play in any of the last set of warm-up matches against Free State for Kolkata Knight Riders on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, Brendon McCullum was the nominated captain but since they were back-to-back matches, he didn’t take the field during the second game. Brad Hodge was the on-field captain then.

According to information received here, Bengal’s Sourav Sarkar and Sunny Singh of Haryana will have to return home. The Haryana allrounder was carrying an injury.

Wriddhiman Saha and Cheteshwar Pujara are also injured but will stay back. While Saha underwent surgery on his left thumb, Pujara has hurt his left knee during an intra-Knight Riders match on Monday. Pujara had been in fine form during the warm-up games.

It was learnt Knight Riders’ squad could be as strong as 25 players.

On Tuesday, Knight Riders suffered a last-ball defeat in their first match. Batting first, Knight Riders were bundled out for 140. Free State reached the target with two wickets to spare.

In the second match, Knight Riders made 204, with McCullum and Chris Gayle making 76 each. Free State could manage only 145 for seven in their stipulated 20 overs.

Gayle had joined the Knight Riders’ base in Bloemfontein on Sunday and didn’t play in Monday’s warm-up games. His being among runs should be a welcome sign for the side.

Knight Riders opening match in he Indian Premier League is against Deccan Chargers on Sunday.

Knight Riders had thrashed Free State by nine wickets in the first match. Sourav Ganguly had authored an unbeaten 61.

Meanwhile, according to an agency report from New Delhi, KKR’s lanky pacer Ishant Sharma Tuesday denied supporting cricket manager John Buchanan’s multiple-captaincy idea, saying he favoured single leadership for his team in the second edition of the IPL in South Africa.

Ishant denied comments attributed to him by a television channel that Buchanan’s multiple captaincy idea should be tried if KKR want to improve their performance this season. “I have not said anything in support of the idea. It will be good for the team if we have only one captain. I don’t know how having four captains will work,” Ishant said.

“I don’t know the team strategy. I will know only after I reach South Africa and meet my team members. So, I can’t say anything more, whatever is good for the team I am for it,” Ishant said.

Ishant also refused to pick his favourite team for the IPL. “I can’t say which team is the favourite to win. It depends on the momentum of a team in the tournament. Keeping the winning momentum will be important,” the 20-year-old pacer who leaves for South Africa Wednesday.

Asked whose wicket he would want most to take in the IPL in South Africa, Ishant said: “There are lot many batsmen whose wicket I would want to take. But Sachin Tendulkar’s would be something special. He is legend of the game.”

‘Don’t know if four captains will work’
NEW DELHI

Having stirredup a hornet’s nest by supporting coach John Buchanan’s multiple captaincy theory, Kolkata Knight Riders’ paceman Ishant Sharma sought to play it safe on Thursday.

“I never said that I supported John’s idea. I said that I was a just a player and it was up to the team management to decide what they can and cannot do. I can only follow what I’m told,” said the lanky fast bowler on the sidelines of an event in the capital.

As an afterthought, he added: “It will be good for the team if we have only one captain. I don’t know how having four captains will work.” The 20-year-old rightarmer’s unequivocal denial comes close on the heels of his controversial assessment of the Knight Riders’ strategy for the second Indian Premier League season.

“Sourav Ganguly is a good captain but sometimes you need new ideas which Buchanan theory can generate,” Ishant was quoted as saying by a news channel earlier this week.

“He (Buchanan) is a very good coach and bit of support from other players can turn things around for KKR,” he had said.

The Kolkata-based oufit are likey to take a final call on their captain for IPL-II on Thurday, in their bid to end the debate that has raged on for the past few weeks.

On the cricketing front though, the team are pretty optimistic about their chances, according to Ishant.

“The Twenty20 format is such that you cannot predict a winner. It depends on the momentum of a team in the tournament.

but I am sure myself and Mashrafe Mortaza will do well as a bowling pair.

He’s done well for Bangladesh.” Ishant felt that the IPL-II would also give him an opportunity to renew rivalries with his Team India mates, who he felt were difficult to bowl to.

“I’ve bowled to them in IPL last year and also in nets without much success. Hopefully I can do well against them, since the wickets will be more conducive to pacers. Taking Sachin Tendulkar’s wicket would be special.

He is a legend,” he said.

KOLKATA KNIGHT RIDERS
KNIGHTS NEED TO REVISIT THE ROYAL BASH
Kolkata Knight Riders, on the very first day of IPL-One, had shown how the new game has to be played — only to forget the formula themselves. But, then, that flying start in Bangalore had much to do with just one man: Brendon McCullum.
The in-form Kiwi is expected to be among those who will set the pace again for KKR. And if coach John Buchanan can press home his muchdebated initiative of having multiple captains, he will be allowed to get into more captaincy roles along with the likes of the West Indian dynamite Chris Gayle. It should surely bring out the best from both.
Australian captain Ricky Ponting will not be around to find out if he benefits from the law of averages after the disappointments of Season One, while T20 specialist David Hussey will be available only if icon Sourav Ganguly and his men can make the semifinals. Sure, the shock of mercurial and controversial Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar’s express deliveries or the nippy accuracy of Umar Gul will be missed badly. And new recruits Charl Langeveldt of South Africa and Bangla pacer Mashrafe Mortaza will be hardpressed to fill that void. Carom-ball expert and mystery Lankan spinner Ajantha Mendis wasn’t quite discovered last season.
Infact, Sourav Ganguly opted to use his services for just one game. But if he can cast his magic this time, the KKR attack will acquire a cutting edge. Sri Lankan allrounder Angelo Mathews is an interesting addition too.
But KKR will have to first imbibe more of the T20 spirit. Bangalore 2008 can still be the point of reference.
IN: Moises Henriques, Angelo Mathews, Mashrafe Mortaza, Morne van Wyk, Charl Langeveldt, Sunny Singh, Arindam Ghosh, Sourav Sarkar, Anurith Singh, Shoaib Sheik.
OUT: Ricky Ponting, Tatenda Taibu, David Hussey, Umar Gul, Shoaib Akhtar, Salman Butt, Mohammed Hafeez.

Dada slashed off from KKR captaincy: Reports
Cape Town, April 17: It seems that Kolkata Knight Riders coach John Buchanan had his own way in the scheme of things as reports in a news channel claim that Sourav Ganguly has been slashed off the captaincy of the IPL team and the responsibility has been shouldered to Brendon McCullum instead.

Reports claim that the changes will be only for the first match of KRR, that is, on 19th April against Deccan Chargers.

A lot of controversy had been created earlier regarding John Buchanan’s ‘multiple-captains theory’ wherein he proposed to have different captains for the different aspects of the game, i.e. - batting, bowling, fielding and the toss as well.

The concept seemed more of conspiracy to remove Ganguly from the captaincy of KKR than to bring about some changes for the betterment of the team.

However, later, team owner Shah Rukh Khan dismissed the possibility of having multiple captains and said that “Dada will always remain our (KKR’s) main man”.

The reports have indeed come as a major jolt for Ganguly, but for McCullum, it must be a chance of a lifetime

People are severely underestimating ganguly here. Ganguly should once again prove that he is an indispensable force in the team as he has always done. He had (has) atleast 2 years of Test cricket in him. Yuvraj aadi kilikura lachanathai than naama paakuromae.

His knock of a 80 odd in last year's IPL was a blitzkreiger. Hope he accumulates runs this year.

Exclusive Ganguly Interview.
I-So wat news??
S-And news

I-Wen di you know
S-yesterday buchanan came to my room and said that he wanted Mccullum for captain.

I-Wat did you say??
S-What can i say?? I listened. its not in my dignity to say anything against the coach.

I-Heard that even SRk came up??
S-Yea.he came up and said sorry coz the coach wants Mccullum as captain. And i am doing just that. I want to give the coach a chance, so that he cant crib about it later.

I-Do you think its totally buchanan's discretion alone??
S-I dunno and dont want to kno either. The owner has the last say and srk is the owner of this team.

I-But last year, if you were unsuccessful, even the coach was.
S- Please lets not get into that.

I-But you scored heavily in the practice matches
S-Not only that, i captained all the matches and won them.

I-Did you imagine somethin like this could happen?
S-i did. Thats why i tried my level best in these matches.

I-What happened then??
S-I an as confounded as you are.

I-So are you shocked??
S-naah.

I-Well, looking at you, it seems so.
S-Nopes. But i have to play well now(jaw hardened)

I-Do you kno that ur ouster from captaincy has raised a flutter in most franchisees??
S-nopes, havent heard bout it. No one told me so.

I-All your close ones and fans are flabbergasted and want to you to leave the franchisee.
S-Well. I thought about it. But i want to give them all a fitting reply by playing well. I have to play well.

I-Mcullum said that you would help him..
S-Yes, he came to me

I-Are you surprised that mccullum was rased to the helm??
S-Well, doesnt matter if m surprised. I heard that the captaincy was first offered to gayle who declined for he dint know the team too well. you still think that i should cry for that post?

I-What plans for tomorrow.
S-nothing. Will hit the gym and go on a ride to cape town.

John Buchanan :rotfl: :rotfl: Knight Riders' night mare!!!

McCullum :lol2:  What a brilliant captain he is? His decision to chose to bat first under gloomy conditions and got out to a mediocre delivery proved that his inexperience as a leader. Even his field placements as well as his shuffling of bowlers was also not good.

Nothing is worked for Buchanan yesterday. i.e. Buchanan's brain as well as his Laptop. Actually, after severely scanning Buchanan's brain, his laptop might have said, "Mr. Buchanan! Leadership, Kolkata's wafer-thin mint

The multiple-captains saga has hung around the otherwise fragrant Kolkata Knight Riders like a bad smell ever since their coach, John Buchanan, mooted the theory at a press conference last month next while sitting next to a decidedly unimpressed Sourav Ganguly. Everyone had an opinion, which is why Shah Rukh Khan - a man never knowingly ruffled - suggested earlier this week that, contrary to speculation, he would be captain. After everything that had happened, you couldn't rule it out.

On Friday, the Kolkata PR machine - and it is the most impressive of the eight franchises out here - rolled into action, announcing that Brendon McCullum, the combative Kiwi, would be the one and only leader, but with "the full support of the team". To prevent a complete strop from certain members of that team, a crucial rider in the press release added the words: "including the Knight Rider's more senior members, such as Sourav Ganguly, Brad Hodge, Chris Gayle and Matthew Mott". Today, as Kolkata embarked on their first game of this year's IPL under the Newlands lights, breaths were duly held.

The problem with issues flogged to within an inch of their relevance by a near-rabid media is that they quickly lose whatever sting they previously possessed once it becomes clear that the story may have been - how shall we put it? - blown out of all proportion. And while Kolkata were slipping to 101 all out (McCullum 1, Gayle 10, Ganguly 1) leaders appeared thin on the ground.

But the real test would come when Kolkata were in the field. Buchanan had tried all along to point out that all he really wanted was for his senior players to share the responsibility. This, predictably enough, was seized upon as a slight to Ganguly, and there are few phenomena in cricket that produce such feverish reporting as a slight to Ganguly. In reality, it was nothing of the sort.

And so McCullum, after a cursory huddle and pep-talk, did what any half-decent captain would do and arranged his field according to the assets available to him. Gayle, never the most talkative anyway, was positioned at slip, where he grazes nonchalantly for West Indies. The athletic Hodge was dispatched to the covers, while Ganguly - who has always regarded fielding as cricket at its most inconvenient - was kept out of harm's way at mid-on.

At one point Ganguly discussed a field placing with Ajit Agarkar. At another, the lesser-known Bengali Laxmi Shukla appeared to be offering advice to his captain. McCullum chivvied and chirped, as wicketkeepers do anyway, and waved Murali Kartik a touch squarer at short extra cover. No matter: Rohit Sharma went down the ground instead and lifted Agarkar for six. During the time-out, which the Deccan Chargers took at 69 for 2 - needing only 33 to win in 10 overs - the sermons were delivered by the assistant coach Mott and McCullum.

But the truth is that captains only have a limited say in what happens in Twenty20 cricket. Richie Benaud's old maxim about skippers needing 90% luck and 10% skill probably shift towards a 95-5 split in the game's speediest format. What constitutes that 5% is, for the moment, most people's guess. A bowling change here, perhaps a well-placed sledge there. Above all, the appearance of authority.

Ganguly had a word with McCullum at the end, but by then it was far too late anyway. He may just as well have been pointing out that captaincy is over-rated in any case. As Kolkata slunk to an eight-wicket defeat with a whopping 41 balls to spare, it may have been the only piece of advice worth imparting.

Ganguly great as captain: Shoaib

International Cricket Council (ICC) has decided to shift the 2011 World Cup matches from Pakistan. So, you have lost the opportunity to play the World Cup on your home ground...

It’s shocking. In fact, it is the worst possible news for Pakistan cricket. Players will miss the opportunity to perform in their own country in the World Cup and Pakistan cricket will have to suffer a major financial loss. It will be a loss for cricket fans, sponsors and organisers too. Most importantly, it will not give out a good message to the world about Pakistani cricket.

But who is responsible for this?
Is it terrorism or is it the organisers? Do you think ICC officials have taken the decision too early?
I am not allowed to talk about this. I don’t know who is responsible either. Name a single place where you can guarantee that there won’t be any threat of terrorism! The entire subcontinent is facing this problem but it’s only in Pakistan that matches cannot be held! I can’t take that logic.

Could you analyse this further?
I am just a cricketer and don’t want to analyse the episode. Being an
optimist, I want to think positive. The responsibility to create a positive image through which people will show an interest in Pakistan cricket, rests on all of us. The performance of the players should be outstanding and the administration should take initiatives to restore Pakistan’s image. I am sure the situation will improve in the near future.

Are you following the IPL this season? As one of the key players last year, don’t you miss being part of it?
No, I am not watching IPL and have no interest in it. I am only focussing on the matches against Australia, starting in Dubai from April 22. I don’t have the time to get involved in other things now.

You must be aware of the ‘multiple captaincy’ concept of John Buchanan...
I have heard about it, but I can’t digest it. What is it all about? In every sphere of life, a leader can only be a single person who can lead the group. If everybody is leading, who will follow? It’s really confusing. Maybe he has something else in mind.

Sourav Ganguly is no longer the captain of the Knight Riders...
I can’t comment on the team management’s decision. But as I have played with him, I can only say that as a captain, Ganguly is much better than lots of other cricketers. He can think differently and has the ability to read situations really well. Most importantly, he is a great motivator.

The buzz is that you may not play in all the five ODIs against Australia as there are doubts about your fitness level...
I know about it, but I have come into the squad after passing the fitness test. I will play all the matches. Let my performance prove my fitness.

New Delhi: History has been witness to many a battle that have been lost because egos got the better of those involved in the contest. In the Knight Riders' case, barring a win and a rain wash out, one has only witnessed abject surrender.

After a hammering at the hands of Messrs Tendulkar and Jayasuriya on Monday night, the Knight's commander Brendon McCullum has said that he will step aside if the team fails to make it to the semi-finals of the IPL. Basically, he'll go once it's all over and there's nothing to play for.

Where's that famed Aussie spirit, eh, Mr Buchanan? What happened to that multi-captaincy theory? And why this rigidity in persisting with a man who just can't deliver?

And there's more. The Knight Riders boast of what many would say is an 'impressive' think-tank. Besides the two-time World Cup winning coach for Australia, the support staff include chief coach Mathew Mott, assistant coach Brad Murphy, wicket-keeping coach Wade Seccombe, bowling coach Andy Bichel, assistant coach for strength training Michael Buchanan (John's son), team director Joydeep Mukherjee, trainer Adrian Le Roux, physiotherapist Andrew Leipus and fielding coach Jon Deeble.

Even at the cost of sounding clichéd, the truth is that it's really been a case of too many cooks spoiling the broth for the Knight Riders.

What they needed was just one coach and one captain. And Sourav Ganguly surely was the best bet for the latter position. A man who taught Indian cricket to believe in itself; to pay back the opposition in the same coin; to infuse a thought process that had earlier been missing was treated with utter disrespect.

But more importantly, Ganguly knew and still knows the art of building a team from scratch. Something that even Buchanan cannot claim to have done; he always had the best talent available when he was coach of Australia.

What the King Khan and his coterie need to do is to keep their egos aside and just ask the Maharaja to take over the reins of the team. No more talk, no more theory, just plain action - being led by a man who lives his emotions on his sleeve.

Just have a look at the advertisements involving the Knight Riders. In both the soft drink and phone commercials, SRK is seen alongside Sourav Ganguly. Why? Because that was the winning combination. So why did that equation change after the team landed in South Africa? Because their egos were larger than the team's cause.

Well, now is the time to put aside egos and ask Ganguly to script a comeback for the team. The rescue act is needed now. The next edition might be too late.

Why Knight Riders coach John Boka-known must go
Avijit Ghosh - Tuesday April 28, 2009

The seven deadly sins of Kolkata Knight Riders coach John Boka-known (boka means stupid in Bengali) and why he must go:

1. For floating the four-captain theory: It’s surely the dumbest theory in the history of cricket. The last thing that a team, which certainly isn't the strongest on paper, needs is man-made confusion and demotivation. But Boka-known's, oops, Buchanan’s theory did exactly that. At a time when the team should have been focusing on strategies to synergise its performance and outsmart its opponent, Buchanan’s non-theory ensured that KKR’s team spirit had taken a free hit before a ball was bowled.

2. For making Brendon McCullum the captain: In retrospect, it appears that the idea of having four captain was only a way of getting Sourav Ganguly out of the leadership role. But why McCullum? True, he can be a blazing bat, but what leadership quality has he ever displayed at home or abroad? Undeniably Buchanan’s initiative has weighed down a mercurial batsman with the crushing load of responsibility. Since he became captain, his scores are: 1, 21, 3, 1. And, by the way, has anybody seen any intelligent, pro-active move made by McCullum in any of these games. And one is not even getting into his using rookie trundler Anureet Singh in the last over against Rajasthan Royals and things like that. It appears the upgrading of McCullum has more to do with the Kiwi’s lack of experience, because it enables Buchanan to wield real power.

3. For downsizing Sourav: The Ganguly-Buchanan story is pretty similar to the Ganguly-Greg saga. Greg too wanted to control the team like a football manager does, forgetting that cricket and soccer are two different games. And he was out to prove that all ills in the national team originate from the Bengal left-hander. Initially, everybody listened to Greg. In this case too, owner Shah Rukh threw his lot with the coach. With IPL2 moving to South Africa, it was easier to downsize Ganguly without any fear of a public backlash. The deed was done. Except that the script has gone all wrong for Buchanan after that. Ganguly hasn't faded away as expected by the Australian coach. On the contrary, he has been one of the few performers in the team. Go through the overall KKR record of IPL1 and IPl2. Ganguly has been the best KKR player by miles. So why has he been relegated to No 4?

4. For his touching faith in Brad Hodge: The Australian coach’s faith in the podgy middle-order Australian batsman is touching. Before he came out to bat against Mumbai Indians on Monday, Hodge’s IPL strike rate was in the 80s. That is like having a No 3 ODI batsman with a strike rate of 50. Hodge is yet to get a single 35-plus score in the eight IPL games he has played. A compact player, he seems to have no fourth gear, imperative for Twenty20. But Buchanan continues to persist with him.

5. For being clueless about the lower middle-order: It is one thing for the middle order to fail. It is another matter being clueless about it. Look at KKR’s 5-7 in the four games it has played in IPL2: against Deccan Chargers (A Chopra, Laxmi Ratan Shukla, M Henriques), against Team Punjab (Yashpal Singh, Chopra, Henrique); against Rajasthan Royals (Ganguly, Sanjay Bangar, Yashpal) and against Mumbai Indians (Yashpal, A Ghosh, Shukla). By the way, who’s A Ghosh? All I can say: It isn’t me. And, by the way, whatever happened to Debabrata Das who was reasonably successful last season?

6. For sending back Chopra and Bangar: Isn’t it strange that with the lower middle-order in such disarray, the think-tank feels confident enough to send back Bangar and Chopra. In all fairness, the two shouldn’t have been bought in the first place. Chopra is a rare batsman who dances down the track against spin only to offer a defensive shot, as he did against the Deccan Chargers. But why send them back when it means that KKR is left scrounging for the likes of A Ghosh. And if Ghosh deserves a second chance, why don’t Chopra or Bangar, who are at least proven internationals. And has Buchanan thought about the decision’s impact on the remaining KKR players? Can they really perform with the sword of being sent back hanging above their heads?

7. For being unsure about team’s bowling strength: Buchanan is clueless about his team’s bowling strength. Other coaches were much quicker in discovering the potential of slow bowlers on South African pitches. It took the KKR think tank three games to discover Ajantha Mendis. It was Mendis who put RR on the backfoot. His 4-0-19-2 was the first match-turning spell by a KKR bowler this season. Agreed he got clobbered by Yusuf Pathan in the Superover (whether he was the right choice for that specific job is another question only Buchanan can answer) and by Tendulkar-Jayasuriya in the following game. But he remains a wicket-taker whom lesser players find impossible to handle. Again, Murali Karthik, an experienced Twenty20 bowler, was left out after two games where his figures were 4-0-23-0 and 1-0-7-0. Why?

Agreed, KKR doesn’t have the best bowling attack in IPL. But it isn’t the worst either. Don’t forget they also have Moses Henrique, Moshrafe Mortaza (why buy somebody with so much fanfare if you don’t play him?) and Ishant Sharma. How about a bowling attack of Ishant, Henrique or Mortaza, Mendis and Karthik? With Ganguly, Gayle and Shukla there to do the fifth bowler’s job. But to do that, Buchanan will have to drop Hodge. The four foreigners in this playing XI would be: Gayle, McCullum, Henrique/Mortaza and Mendis.

Solution: There’s only one way to save the season for KKR. Sack Buchanan. Now. Replace him with anybody, even Mandira Bedi. But Buchanan must go down under. There’s nothing he can contribute positively to this team. Sacking him will not make KKR the winner of IPL2. But it will improve the dressing room atmosphere and bring some passion back into the side.

If he cannot be sacked, then I have a 'phony’ theory, rather appropriate in times of fake bloggers, for KKR owner Shah Rukh Khan to consider: Why not have four coaches and one captain? Surely having 25% of Buchanan is better than having 100% of him.

In a pre-match vetti pechu sessions in the studio, Mohinder Amarnath was talking to Mandira Bedi, who was on the ground. I don't know the context but Jimmy said "Mandira, whatever you do, please do not go to the team dressing room when the team has had a great win or a bad loss. Why Knight Riders coach John Boka-known must go
Avijit Ghosh - Tuesday April 28, 2009

Solution: There’s only one way to save the season for KKR. Sack Buchanan. Now. Replace him with anybody, even Mandira Bedi. But Buchanan must go down under. There’s nothing he can contribute positively to this team. Sacking him will not make KKR the winner of IPL2. But it will improve the dressing room atmosphere and bring some passion back into the side.[tscii:e83081fa22][/tscii:e83081fa22] Mandira Bedi ya coachA pOttA kandippA dressing room atmosphere improve aagum. :rotfl3:
In a pre-match vetti pechu sessions in the studio, Mohinder Amarnath was talking to Mandira Bedi, who was on the ground. I don't know the context but Jimmy said "Mandira, whatever you do, please do not go to the team dressing room when the team has had a great win or a bad loss. You don't want to go there and you have no idea what it will be like" (or something to that effect, IIRC). Adhukku Mandira Bedi, "Its ok, i want to go where no woman has gone before"

Zaheer’s injury a concern: Sourav
A STAFF REPORTER

Calcutta: Sourav Ganguly may not be a part of the Indian team any longer, but that he has not lost his touch was evident from the elan with which he answered questions on Team India and cricket on Wednesday. Sourav was officially inducted into ESPN-STAR Sports’s commentary team at an event in the city and the former India captain will hold the commentator’s microphone in the semi-finals and final of the World T20 Championship in England, which begins on Friday. :D

For those with a penchant for facts, Sourav is once again making his debut, though off the field, in England, the country where he slammed two centuries on his Test debut in 1996.

Sourav backed Team India to clinch the T20 title: “If you ask for my favourite, it’s India. They are a strong side and I’m hopeful that they will do well this time as well to retain the trophy. But to be honest, no one can be picked as a favourite in the T20 format… Anyone can win on a given day.”

On whether he foresees pressure derailing Team India’s campaign, the stylish southpaw said that in T20, all the teams are under pressure. “Pressure is on everyone… And I think this Indian team handles pressure well. One also has to remember that the last time (in 2007), when India won the World T20 Cup, they were a young side. Two years down the line, they have become more matured and experienced and that will definitely help,” Ganguly asserted.

He was also all praise for India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni: “Dhoni has been doing a fabulous job as the captain. He has been producing results for the past two years, not only in T20 but also in Tests and one-day Internationals. I have been in those shoes and I know how difficult a role that is. He is only 27 (years old) and has truly been doing a brilliant job,” said the man who took India to the ODI World Cup final in 2003.

He also played down India’s 9-run loss to New Zealand in a warm-up tie on Monday saying that Dhoni’s boys have had quite a good record in T20s.

He voted for Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir as the ideal and best opening duo for India. But when reminded that since Sehwag was nursing an injury what if someone like Rohit Sharma is pushed up, Ganguly said: “I don’t really know… Rohit hasn’t done the job before, so I don’t know how he will perform.”

Sourav expressed concern over Zaheer Khan’s injury saying, “He has been playing a lot of cricket… His injury is definitely a concern… But injury is part and parcel of the game and you will have to cope with it.”

When asked whether T20 is more of a batsman’s game, the owner of 11,363 runs in ODIs refused: “T20 is not necessarily a batsman’s game. In fact, there’s a lot of pressure on the batsman… A bowler has 24 deliveries (the 4-over limit in T20) to prove himself while for a batsman a single delivery may bring about his downfall. So the batsmen are always under pressure.”

When asked whether his one-time teammates will take his criticisms from the commentary box sportingly, Sourav had a mischievous answer: “Let’s see… It’s just the beginning. I hope they shake my hand after the match!”

His message for the Indian team ahead of the World T20 bore a stamp of his own inimitable style: “Just win it, once again!”

KKR rope in TN’s ‘rebel’ Vignesh
Allrounder Feels ICL Experience Will Help Him Excel In IPL
Krishna Kanta Chakraborty | TNN

Chennai: The Knight Riders management is believed to have sealed the deal with Tamil Nadu allrounder Ganapathi Vignesh for the next edition of IPL. Vignesh is the first ICL player to have signed for Shah Rukh Khan owned franchise and is likely to turn up during the next camp in Kolkata in September.
The 28-year-old represented Chennai Superstars in the ICL and was one of the most successful players in the shortest version scoring 892 runs and grabbing 29 wickets.
“I am very happy to have got this opportunity. It is like a dream come true. I am proud that I will be sharing the dressing room with a player of Sourav Ganguly’s stature. I hope it is an experience that is worth savouring,” Vignesh told TOI on Sunday.
Vignesh who hasn’t enjoyed too much success at the first-class level (47 runs and 11 wickets from eight matches) knows that there will be a lot of pressure playing in a high profile tournament like IPL.
“The level of expectation will definitely be higher as the competition will be of highest level. But I’m not afraid of such challenges. I’m looking forward to have a great going in the IPL,” Vignesh stated. The allrounder didn’t forget to mention that experience of playing ICL will only come in handy.
“Playing a quality T20 tourney like ICL will come in handy.”
He didn’t forget to wax eloquent about the cash rich league.
“IPL is a fantastically organized tournament and it has a global appeal and naturally it demands a lot from the players. I look at it positively and will learn from every match to help my game improve,” he added.
Being an allrounder will definitely be of great help as that may help him shoulder that extra responsibility.
“Being an allrounder, I’ll have to shoulder little more responsibility than others, but that’s a great advantage for me,” he said.
He also expects that he can contribute in his own way which will help KKR finish better than their last edition debacle when they finished last.
“I’ve great confidence in my ability and will always give my hundred percent. We have quality cricketers in our rank and I believe that we would fare much better than the last edition,” he signed off.

I don’t want captaincy: Viru

New Delhi: Dashing opener Virender Sehwag on Monday said he doesn’t want to be the captain of the Indian cricket team and suggested that a new face should be given the responsibility of vicecaptaincy so that he can be groomed to take the reins after skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
“I don’t want to be a captain, I have already told selectors about it. I have said that a new player should be made vice-captain and be groomed to be a captain,” Sehwag said. “I want that I should continue to score runs and keep winning matches for the team,” he added. The Delhi-batsman said he would regain his fitness completely before the Champions League which starts from October 10.
Sehwag, who has played under many skippers in his career, considers Saurav Ganguly as the best ever captain. “Saurav Ganguly has been the best ever captain India ever had,” he said. PTI

I let down KKR in last season: Shah Rukh
PTI, 11 January 2010, 07:19pm IST

KOLKATA: Blaming himself for his team's failure in previous two seasons, Kolkata Knight Riders prinicipal owner Shah Rukh Khan on Monday admitted his "lack of knowledge" had led to few wrong decisions as the side failed to perform as a unit in the IPL.

The superstar, who attended the team's preparatory camp for IPL-3 at CC&FC ground, however said everything was past and he would like to win the IPL this time to prove that he can deliver.

"We did not go about it the right way. I think I let down the side in the sense that I could not make it a cohesive team. I would like to take the responsibility.

"Somewhere down the line, I think a lot of decisions were taken by me or I was at least part of some of it... Maybe a lot of things with lack of knowledge about how things should be done in a new format like Twenty20," Shah Rukh said.

"This season the attempt has been there. Let's forget everything. I want to win IPL to prove to myself that I can win. If I take on something, I will deliver," Shah Rukh asserted.

KKR was mired in controversy last season especially after former coach John Buchanan floated a "multiple captaincy" idea that was never implemented but the side had decided to remove Sourav Ganguly from captaincy.

The side finished at the bottom of the standings after Australia's World Cup winnning coach John Buchanan was sacked and replaced with Dav Whatmore, who was Sri Lanka's coach during their 1996 World Cup truimph.

Shah Rukh further said he was feeling bad to come to Kolkata as his side had finished second last and last in IPL first and second editions respectively.

"I regret losing. With all honesty, I'm saying that I regret for having let down the people of Kolkata. I don't owe them anything and they don't expect anything from me. But for the love they have showered on us, we should have done better. We are a better team from the way we have done so far.

"Hope is always to make Kolkata proud. People here are very warm... I feel little bad as I have a team here, we all belong to the city and we have not been able to do well.

"I am genuinely a wrong person to talk about cricket. There are more experienced people around... Dada (Sourav Ganguly), Wasimbhai (Akram), Dav (Whatmore) they all are here and guiding the side.

"We are thinking positive. Hope this season, the city feels very proud of Kolkata Knight Riders for the way we play here. This season, we have been able to base most of our work here. We have time now," he said.

Asked whether they have decided to bid for any particular players in the IPL auction on January 19, Shah Rukh said he was not aware of it as yet.

"The decision will be taken by 17 or 18th (January). We want to wait till the last time. We want to get a clearer picture of the availibility of international players. Of course, if Dada and Dav decide we'll go for that player."

The KKR has a new jersey and colour this time around and Shah Rukh said they have changed everything.

"Everything is fresh now. We have a new staff starting with the coach. We have made few changes in the administration. We have a mix of old and new now. One of the things Dada suggested was let's even change the colour."

He jokingly added, "Let's not have anything left from the past side. I'm glad they have not changed me. They only retained me."

Sourav: Bowling our strong point
- Jogiyani tipped to be Saha’s backup

A STAFF REPORTER

Calcutta: Saurashtra’s wicket-keeper batsman Sagar Jogiyani is the favourite to be Wriddhiman Saha’s standby in the Kolkata Knight Riders squad for the upcoming Indian Premier League.

Although, a formal announcement is awaited, it is clear that there will be a two-way fight between Jogiyani and former Bengal captain Deep Dasgupta during a practice match scheduled on Thursday. Rohit Sabharwal and Thilak Naidu are out of contention for the third wicket-keeper’s slot as of now.

It has been learnt that the KKR captain Sourav Ganguly was impressed with Jogiyani’s performance in the recently concluded Vijay Hazare Trophy and summoned him to the camp. On Wednesday, Sourav was seen talking to the youngster and also giving him valuable suggestions.

Sourav seemed pretty certain about the composition of the squad for the first match against Deccan Chargers on March 12. “I have a fair idea about what kind of squad we would take to Mumbai for the first match. The squad of 15 is in the process of finalisation. We will have a couple of practice matches before we take a final call,” Sourav told reporters after a two-hour session at Eden Gardens. Ajit Agarkar, Ishant Sharma and Manoj Tiwary were also present at practice.

Sourav, though, is still not sure about his batting position — whether to open or bat No. 3. “Throughout my international career, I have mostly opened or batted at No. 3. Though I haven’t decided, it will be either opening or at No. 3.”

Asked whether he will be missing Tiwary, Ashok Dinda and Wriddhiman Saha who will not be available for the camp due to Deodhar Trophy commitments, he seemed unperturbed.

“It’s always good to play matches... They will get some serious match practice in the process,” he said.

Sourav also feels that contrary to popular belief, bowling is the KKR’s strong point.

“We will be getting the services of Shane Bond from the second match. His raw pace can make a lot of difference. There is Ishant Sharma who is a current India player. We have a seasoned campaigner in Ajit Agarkar. I wouldn’t count Eklakh Ahmed out as he is a left-arm pacer. Left-arm pacers have done quite well in the IPL. Eklakh brings in the necessary variation. We have a good prospect in Varun Aaron who can bowl at 90 miles per hour.”

He feels it will be difficult to choose four foreign players. “When you have players like Chris Gayle, Brad Hodge, David Hussey, Angelo Mathews, Ajantha Mendis in your ranks, it becomes a difficult choice.”

On the Bengal players, Sourav said that he has spoken to Manoj about his batting position. He also made it clear that Wriddhiman and Dinda’s form were not a worrying factor.

“Wriddhi, in fact, batted well in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. But he is batting way down at No. 6 whereas he should be batting up the order. Obviously Sreevats (he plays for Royal Challengers Bangalore) was outstanding. Laxmi (Shukla) is bowling pretty well but he also needs to score runs. Dinda did pretty well. But we played mostly on good batting wickets where the batsman made good use of the Power play overs.”

same here... 2,3 per kitta bet ellam vera kattirukken we wil reach semis this time-nu... :P but, for the first 2,3 matches no gayle and bond... mccullum wil join for last few matches only... no idea abt david hussey... so, our team wil miss key players for the first few matches... not enough of foreign players...only 5 in the current squad...

The Knight Riders will have all the 23 registered players for the first match in Mumbai. However, the team management won’t travel with more than 15 players when they hit the road next time. The final XV will be decided on Wednesday, two days before KKR’s first match against the Deccan Chargers.

The five foreigners available for the first match are Owais Shah, Brad Hodge, Ajantha Mendis, Angelo Mathews and Charl Langeveldt.

Likely squad for 1st match: Sourav Ganguly, Manoj Tiwary, Cheteshwar Pujara, Laxmi Ratan Shukla, Wriddhiman Saha, Ashok Dinda, Ajit Agarkar, Murali Karthik, Ganapathy Vignesh, Ishant Sharma, Angelo Mathews, Brad Hodge, Ajantha Mendis, Charl Langeveldt, Owais Shah
then probable 11 would be...
Tiwary
Hodge
Sourav
O Shah
Pujara
A Mathews
Saha
Vignesh/Shukla/Agarkar/Dinda
M Karthik
Langervelt
I Sharma[/tscii:1cf5d2d47d]
