Yes, it is going to be Vanishree.

Like Devika, Vanishree too occupies a special place in the hearts of Sivaji Fans. Compared to Padmini or Devika, Vanishree may not be the epitome of beauty but she had a screen presence, which few heroines possessed. The very first thing that would strike you about Vanishree is her natural way of emoting, especially in love scenes [since we are talking about pairs]. Heroines before that had a queer way of showing facial expressions when it was demanded to show love and most of the time it would look artificial. But with Vanishree, it would not be.

Prabha was telling that though NT was more suitable for the older set of heroines [age factor], still NT- Vanishree pair rocked. But that was not right. NT started acting with Vanishree from 1968 onwards and if you care to check that was the period when NT was at his youthful best.

அடுத்து நிறைகுடம். உயர்ந்த மனிதன் போல் இல்லாமல் இருவரும் படம் முழுக்க ஜோடியாக வந்த படம். கண்ணொரு பக்கம் பாடலில் ரொம்ப பிரமாதமாக chemistry வொர்க் அவுட் ஆகியிருக்கும். ஆனால் கதையின் போக்கினால் ரொமான்ஸ் சிறிது நேரமே நீடிக்க, காதலுக்கு அதிக வேலை இல்லை.

சிவகாமியின் செல்வன்- ஆராதனாவின் ரீமேக் என்றாலும் கூட அதை மறந்து விட்டு மக்களை பார்க்க செய்ததில் இந்த ஜோடிக்கு ஒரு முக்கிய பங்கு இருக்கிறது. உள்ளம் ரெண்டும் பாடலில் வாணிஸ்ரீ பார்க்கும் ஒரு சுக்லேட் பார்வை பலரை கவர்ந்ததை நான் அறிவேன். அது போல இனியவளே பாடல். மேள தாளம் பாடலில் முந்தானையை இடுப்பில் சொருகி கொண்டு வாணிஸ்ரீ ஆடும் அந்த டான்ஸ்-ஐ பார்ப்பதற்காகவே எத்தனையோ முறை இந்த படம் பார்க்க போன என் நண்பர்கள் இருக்கிறார்கள்.[இன்டெர்வல் விட்டவுடன் வந்து விடுவார்கள்]. முழங்கை வரை ரவிக்கை அணியும் பேஷன்-ஐ அறிமுகப்படுத்தியவர் வாணிஸ்ரீ என்று பெண்கள் சொல்லக் கேட்டிருக்கிறேன்.

வாணி ராணி more of action oriented rather than romantic and even the two duet songs would be for Muthuraman.

But Rojavin Raja is one movie where NT - Vanishree pair would be great. The initial scenes of love developing would be so good. Especially the theatre scene. While NT and Vanishree would sit side by side before the interval, Sukumari (Vanishree's mother) would swap seats and Sivaji coming with a chiklet pocket would be caught unawares. He would try to give chiklets to Vanishree but Sukumari would stop him and NT would be offering the same to Veeraraghavan who would be sitting in the next row. Vanishree all these time would sit and watch with a romantic smile. இந்த காட்சியை வாணிஸ்ரீ வீட்டில் போய் பெட்-ல் படுத்துக் கொண்டு தனியாக நடித்து காட்டுவார். " மேடம் நீங்க சாப்பிடுறீங்களா, சார் நீங்க" என்று நடிகர் திலகம் மாதிரியே செய்து காட்டுவார். [On the side lines, after the theatre scene, Veeraraghavan would come and ask NT எனக்கு என்ன வயசு இருக்கும்-னு நினைக்கீறீங்க? For which NT would reply 45. Veera would say இல்லை 28. இந்த மாதிரி சுக்லேட் சாப்பிட்டே என் தலை இப்படி வழுக்கை ஆகிப் போச்சு].

If Rojavin Raja duet song was a curtain raiser, then அலங்காரம் கலையாத சிலை ஒன்று கண்டேன் shot in Bangalore Lal Bagh and Cubbon Bagh was one hell of a song sequence where the pair would be too good to watch. Rojavin Raja on any day would be a great watch for me.

Ilaiya Thalaimurai bordered on glamour in love scenes. Moreover it was delayed and so much charm was lost. Punniya Bhoomi was more of story and there was no place for love and Romance. Nallathoru Kudumbam was more on the lines of Iruvar Ullam but the only duet song சிந்து நதிக் கரையோரம் was a treat to watch. An arching Vanishree in the hands of NT singing

மஞ்சள் மலர் பஞ்சணைகள்
மன்மதனின் மந்திரங்கள்
கொஞ்சும் குயில் மெல்லிசைகள்
கோதை எந்தன் சீர்வரிசை

and NT replying

சொல்லிக் கொடுத்தேன் அதை அதை
அள்ளிக் கொடுத்தாய் அதை அதை
காதல் கண்ணம்மா.

is etched in mind.

But one thing that made her as a permanent favourite was the one and only வசந்த மாளிகை. A film that is close to the heart of every Sivaji fan gave her that position. என்ன சொல்வது! காலத்தால் அழிக்க முடியாத காவியம்.

ஹமீது சில பல வசனங்களை அழகாக சொன்னார். The main plus point is the way Vanishree played that self respecting (to the point of being egoistic) girl Latha made it great. For me two scenes in that movie stand out. The first one is the drive in the Geep when the saree because of the wind would caress NT's face. [Hameed had alrady given the dialogues]. The second is the scene at the hut where both of them take shelter during rain. [பசிக்குதா? குளிருதா? வேற என்ன செய்யுது?]. The subtle way in which both would express their feelings always used to fascinate me. The பார் லதா பார் dialogue followed by the evergreen மயக்கமென்ன was the icing on the cake.

As long as NT and Vasantha Maligai are talked about, Vanishree would remain a favourite.

I dont think so Murali sir. When comparing his dance steps with JJ in first part of "KalyAna ponnu kadappakkam pOnA" in Raja, the scene in UM is not that much celebratable. (but I dont like the second half in Kerala boat scene. Because NT's movements were restricted in the small place in boat). But his steps in first half of the song were wonderful, especially his hip movements for the line......

Yes.. self respect is clearly illustrated the scenes how Nagesh insults her and the scenes follows when she resigns and when even Sivaji asks her " ஏன் இப்படி செஞ்ச?" her reactions are awesome.. :thumbsup:

Yes, the real Heroine in Gaurawam is none other than Pandaribhai. What a terrific performance. Who can forget that "kaNNa engEdA pOrE?".

Usha Nandhini is just a pickle in that movie. Strictly speaking her roll is not even important in story, comparing to Ramaprabha and Jaikumari.

And next to VM my fav NT films are Gowravam and Thangappathakkam.. but when we talk about pair to NT and their chemistry it worked out well in VM than any other movie..

My pick is still Padmini.. i have said it many times before.. but VS comes next solely coz of VM..

Both the films are about friendship but as you are probably aware, Karnan is based on the Mahabharatha. If you think Dhalabathy is excellent, watch this one. :)

No one knows how Karnan would have looked like but after watching the film, if the real Karnan appears before you, you'd probably demand to see his id. :lol: That is called Sivaji effect.

Anyway, it was about Karnan, which happens to be my favourite historical/mythical NT film. I wrote that Devika is the gravity that pulls NT back when he is in mess emotionally. Such wonderful performance on her part, especially when she is the calm amidst the storm that is NT, the yin to NT's yang. To borrow line from Jerry Maguire, she completes NT in this film.

I have seen Andavan Kattalai Many Time. Devika 's expression will be very natural and beauty. In Bale Pandya her youth is watchable. Her films might have not been so succeesful like with NT AND SAROJADEVI. but Saroja devi irritating acting is the worst part of it. Among the best of Sivaji and devika is Bandapasam(less adverided)

In my humble opinion, none of the actresses may find a right foil for NT due to very fact that NT is far far above these actresses in terms of overall capability to execute a role. In fact, because of this very fact NT himself used to enact scenes (including that famous pregnancy scene by saroja devi in Bhagapprivinai).

However, to some extent the following pair clicked in some movies or may be in some scenes......

a) NT-Padmini - Thookkuthookki, Uthama Puthiran (near perfect), Pudhaiyal (Vinnodum Mugilodum song sequence), Deivappiravi (Anbaale thediya en song sequence), Thillana Mohanambal, Vietnam Veedu (some scenes).

b) NT-Devika - Pava Mannippu (Paalirukkum song), Shanthi (Nenjathilae nee netru vandhaai song), Andavan Kattalai (near perfect), Bale Pandiya (songs), Neelavaanam (near perfect), Annai Illam

c) NT-Saroja Devi - Iruvar Ullam & Paalum Pazhamum (Near perfect), Aalaya Mani (certain portions), Pudhiya Paravai (certain portions)

d) NT-Vani Sree - Nirai Kudam (near perfect as both look pretty young), Vasantha Maaligai (songs and some portions), Uyarntha Manidhan (near perfect)

e) NT-Lakshmi - Thiyagam (near perfect) - This pair could have acted more movies, especially between 1970 and 1975.

f) NT-Jaya Lalitha - Galatta Kalyanam, Enga Oor Raja, Enga Mama

g) NT - KR Vijaya - Iru Malargal

h) NT - Vyjayanthi Mala - Irumbuthirai (near perfect) - should have acted in more films

i) NT - Sowcar Janaki - though underrated, was a good foil in Motor Sundaram Pillai (where Mani Mala was also quite apt in a few scenes), Paar Magale Paar and Uyarntha Manidhan

j) NT - Savitri - Pre-Pasa Malar movies

The one pair I always hate is NT-Manjula for obvious reasons!
