Well Si Ka!

Kaaviyaththalaivi revolves around Sowkaar in a dual role as the estranged mother and the ebullient daughter who grows under the tutelage of the Mother's erstwhile lover GG! The mishap to Sowkaar happens when GG the lover goes abroad in pursuit of his higher studies, in the era of no Cell Phones or Smart Phones or Skype or Whazzup...facebook...or even a hub mayyam! Due to the overpowering of MRR Vasu a middleman in the cursed business of women trade, Sowkaar gets her female child, another Sowkaar! The daught Sowkaar is in her unrelented search for her mother....by circumstances the saviour GG nurtures the daught....the Mom Sowk ultimately happens to come in cross currents with the daught Sowk in her B'day party amidst the silent spectators GG the Godfather and Ravichandran the unfortunate lover to daught Sowk, seemingly a bit aged to Ravi! But Ravi's Love has no eyes!!

After Iru Kodukal Sowk tried to anchor her market through this own home production directed by KB whose choice by default is always GG but he slipped or even slid when he had chosen relatively young Ravi pitted against over made-up Sowk as the lover!! This scar remains in my hearts and minds till today.....some how the saving grace of this film is GG whose presence and his brand subtle acting keeps us cool and magnetised even with his aged get up!!


The astonishing feature of this film is the brilliant and life-time portrayal by MRR Vasu who also shows his maturity in acting particularly in scenes when his soul breaks down upon seeing his grown up daughter and he gets caught in the haunting of love and passion for his blood is thicker than water daughter!! Outstanding portrayal on par with GG!

Geysers are artesian outburst of water as hot water springs against gravity above the ground surface due to pressure release from confined aquifers or water bearing formations underneath the ground! They symbolize the eruption of happy moods of people with joy and mirth surrounding them!

A cool water fall on the other hand is visibly enjoyable but it has to fall from heights due to gravity symbolizing the unprecedented drainage of a happy mood in unfortunate situations!

However, geysers and falls have to be down to the earth eventually so long as the globe is controlled by the gravitational attraction!!

So are the moods generated in our movies too!! Particularly GG movies have these alternating currents of geysers and water falls,,,happy moods and dejection.....and the way GG handles these situations are superb and he makes us feel that we are also travelling inside the movie with him observing him....!!

ஜெமினி என்ற தோழனின் நினைவு நாள்.-22 மார்ச்

நடிகர்திலகம் என்ற அழகனை,ஆகர்ஷ சக்தியை,சுடரை,நடிப்பின் தெய்வத்தை நட்சத்திரமாக அண்ணார்ந்து பார்த்து பிரமித்தாலும் ,ஒரு மென்மையான தோழனாய் நம் தோளுக்கு அருகே வருபவர் ஜெமினி. சிவாஜியை பார்த்த போது பேச்சே வராமல், காலடியில் வீழ்ந்த நான் ,ஜெமினியிடம் சரளமாக உரையாடியுள்ளேன்.

இவரை பற்றி ஏற்கெனெவே எழுதியவற்றை நினைவு கூறுகிறேன்.

உண்மையாக சொன்னால் ஜெமினி ஒரு நடிகர் என்ற ரீதியில் மட்டும் வைத்து பார்க்க பட்டால்(தமிழகத்தில் உயரமான நடிப்பின் இமயம் இருந்ததால் ,நடிகர்திலகத்தை உலகத்தின் உச்சிக்கு விட்டு விட்டே மற்றவரை எடை போட இயலும்),அன்றைய தமிழகத்தில் இருந்த ஏனைய எல்லோரையும் விட உயர்ந்து,கிட்டத்தட்ட ஹிந்தி நடிகர்களின் தரத்தில் இருந்தவர்.

இத்தனைக்கும் கைகளை உபயோகிக்க தெரியாது,multi tasking acting ability ,coordination அறவே கிடையாது. ஸ்டைல்,ஈர்ப்புள்ள signature actions ஊஹூம். நடனம்,action ஹே ஹே ஹே. கொஞ்சம் பெண்மை தன்மையுள்ள soft நடிகர்.

3)காமெடி,செண்டிமெண்ட்,tragedy ,கிராமத்தான்,நடுத்தரன்,பணக்காரர் எல்லா பாத்திரங்களுக்கும் பாந்தம்.(Action ,ஸ்டைல் விட்டு விடலாம்)

4)நாடக பயிற்சி இல்லாதது blessing in disguise . அதனால் சினிமாவிற்கு வேண்டிய சினிமா நடிப்பை மட்டுமே தந்தார்.

5)Acting is not about Acting and reacting but behaving as the character என்பதற்கு அற்புத உதாரணம்.

6)இவர் காட்சியை தன வய படுத்தும் (Scene Stealing )அழகு அவ்வளவு பாந்தமாய் ,மெருகூட்டுவதாக அமையும். ரங்கராவ் கற்பகத்திலும்(எல்லா காட்சியும்),சிவாஜி பார்த்தால் பசி தீருமிலும் (குழப்ப காட்சிகள்)என்று சொல்லி கொண்டே போகலாம்.

7)நான் அவனில்லை படத்திற்கு, சிறந்த நடிகர் பட்டம் வழங்காத இந்திய அரசை என்னால் மன்னிக்கவே இயலாது,.

தமிழ்த் திரையில் உக்கிரமான நடிப்பு ஆகிருதிகளாக சிவாஜி கணேசன், எம். ஆர்.ராதா, நாகேஷ் இவர்களைக் குறிப்பிடலாம். மென்மையான நேர் எதிர்த் திசையில் சாதித்தவர்கள் ஜெமினி கணேசன், எஸ்.வி.ரங்காராவ், டி.எஸ்.பாலையா ஆகியவர்கள்.


19 வயதில் பாப்ஜியைத் திருமணம் செய்துகொண்டவர். அதன் பிறகு நடிகைகள் புஷ்பவல்லி, சாவித்திரி இருவருடனும் வாழ்ந்து குழந்தைகள் தந்தவர். பின்னும் ராஜஸ்ரீயோடு affair. 78 வயதில் ஜூலியானாவை மணந்து பிரிந்து இப்போது 85 வயதில் வாழ்க்கையின் சலிப்பைத் தாங்க முடியாமல் மூச்சை நிறுத்திக் கொண்டவர்.



‘ உங்கள் வாழ்க்கை வரலாற்றை நான் எழுதட்டுமா? ‘ என்று ஒரு சினிமா பத்திரிக்காசிரியர் ஜெமினி கணேசனிடம் கேட்டார். “நீ எதுக்குடா எழுதணும்? Even a Rickshaw Wala in the street corner knows my whole history" – ஜெமினியின் பதில் இது!

தன்னுடைய வாழ்க்கையைத் திறந்த புத்தகமாக வைத்துவிட்டு மறைந்து விட்டார் ஜெமினி. "My life is a open book. You should read it to know what not to do."

1947இல் நடிக்க ஆரம்பித்திருந்தாலும் 1953ஆம் ஆண்டுதான் – தன்னுடைய 33 வயதில் – கதாநாயகனானார். அன்றைய பிரபல நடிகைகள் அனைவருடனும் நடித்தார். சாவித்திரி, அஞ்சலிதேவி, வைஜயந்தி மாலா, பத்மினி, சவுகார் ஜானகி, தேவிகா, சரோஜா தேவி, கே.ஆர்.விஜயா, ஜெயந்தி, காஞ்சனா என்று எல்லோருக்கும் பொருந்துகிற மாதிரியான கதாநாயகன்.

நாடகப் பின்னணி கொண்டவர்களே சினிமாவுக்கு வந்துகொண்டிருந்த காலத்தில் அத்தகைய பின்னணி இல்லாமல் நடிக்க வந்தவர். அன்றைய காலத்தில் நன்கு படித்துவிட்டு சினிமாவுக்கு வந்த மிகச்சிலரில் ஒருவராக இவரைச் சொல்லலாம். அபாயமான காட்சிகளில் டூப் போடாமல் நடிப்பார். நடிகராவதற்கு முன்னரே, கல்லூரி மாடியிலிருந்து குதிப்பாராம். ‘ எப்படிக் குதித்தாய்? “ என்று பிரின்சிபால் பதறிக் கேட்டபோது மீண்டும் மாடியேறி குதித்து ‘இப்படித்தான்’ என்றாராம். புதுக்கோட்டை மகாராஜா இவர் தலையில் ஆப்பிளை வைத்துக் குறிபார்த்து ஆப்பிளைச் சுடும் பயிற்சிக்கு அடிக்கடி ஒத்துழைத்த தைரியசாலி.

சிவாஜிக்கு முக்கியத்துவம் தரும் 13 படங்களில் அவரோடு இணைந்து நடித்தவர் ஜெமினி. ஆனாலும் தன்னை விடச் சாதாரண நடிகர்களான ஜெய்சங்கர், முத்துராமன், ஏ.வி.எம்.ராஜன், போன்றவர்களின் படங்களில் கூட நடித்தார். நடிகைகளுக்கு முக்கியத்துவம் தரும் படங்களிலும் இவர் நடித்திருந்தார்.

எந்தப் பாத்திரத்தில் நடித்தாலும் சிவாஜியிடம் அவரது பிரம்மாண்ட இமேஜ் அவருடைய மாறுபட்ட பாணியையும் மீறி மறக்க முடியாத விஷயமாயிருந்தது. ஆனால் ஜெமினியால் சராசரி மனிதனை மிக இயல்பாகத் திரையில் காட்ட முடிந்தது.

சரித்திரப் படங்கள், சமூகப் படங்கள் என்று பல வகைப் படங்களைத் தந்தவர். எந்த அளவுக்கு ‘ கல்யாணப் பரிசு’, ‘சுமை தாங்கி’ என்று சோகமான படங்களில் நடித்தாரோ அதே அளவு ‘மிஸ்ஸியம்மா’, ‘யார் பையன்’ என்று நகைச்சுவைப் படங்களிலும் நடித்தவர் ஜெமினி. இவருடைய ‘சாந்தி நிலையம்’, ‘ சங்கமம்’ வண்ணத்தில் தரமானவை.

ஏ.எம்.ராஜா, பி.பி.ஸ்ரீநிவாஸ் ஆகியோர் அவருக்காகப் பாடிய பாடல்கள், அவர் நடித்த படங்கள் ஆகியவை எப்போதும் இந்தக் காதல் மன்னனை நினைவுபடுத்திக் கொண்டேயிருக்கும்.

ஜெமினி கணேசனுக்கு இரண்டு பெண்குழந்தைகள் பிறந்த பின் ( மூன்றாவது பெண்ணுக்கு ஹிந்தி நடிகை ரேகா வயது தான் . சர்ச் பார்க் கான்வென்டில் இருவரும் ஒன்றாக படித்தார்கள்.நான்காவது பெண் ’ஜிஜி’ கூட ரொம்ப பின்னால் தான் பிறந்தவர் ) புஷ்பவல்லியுடன் affairஏற்பட்டது .புஷ்பவல்லிக்கு முன் மனைவி பாப்ஜி தவிர வேறு பெண்களை தொட்டதே கிடையாது என ஜெமினி சொன்னார்.

1940களின் பின்பகுதியில் புஷ்பவல்லி பெரிய திரை நட்சத்திரமாய் இருந்த காலத்தில் ஜெமினி அவர் பெயருக்கு காரணமான ஜெமினி ஸ்டுடியோவில் உத்தியோகம் பார்த்தவர்.அதோடு சினிமாவில் (புஷ்பவல்லி கதாநாயகியாய் நடித்த படத்தில் கூட)அப்போது ஜெமினி கணேசன் சிறு சிறு கதாபாத்திரங்களில் நடித்துக்கொண்டிருந்தவர்.

1951ல் செப்டம்பர் 22தேதியில் பீச்சில் ஏற்கனவே தனக்கு நன்கு அறிமுகமுள்ள நடிகை புஷ்பவல்லியை சந்திக்க நேர்ந்தது அவர் வாழ்வையே புரட்டிப்போட்டது. புஷ்பவல்லி ஜெமினியிடம் தன் குடும்பப் பிரச்சினைகளைப் பற்றி பேசினார். (புஷ்பவல்லிக்கு ஏற்கனவே அப்போதே ஒரு மகன் பாபுஜி.இந்த பாபுஜி பின்னால் குட்டி பத்மினியின் அக்காவை மணந்தார் . வியட்நாம் வீடு படத்தில் சிவாஜியின் மகளுக்கு காதலனாக நடித்தார்.)
ஜெமினியின் காரை புஷ்பவல்லி ஓட்டிப் பார்க்க விரும்பினார். காரை ஓட்டிப் பார்த்த புஷ்பவல்லியை ஜெமினி அன்றே ஓட்டி...


அதிகாலை மனைவி பாப்ஜி வீட்டில் திண்ணையில் குற்ற உணர்வுடன் வந்து படுத்துக்கிடந்தார் . பாப்ஜி வெகுளியாய் ஜெமினியின் தாயாரிடம் " அம்மா! உங்க பிள்ளைய பாருங்க இங்கே!"
தான் மெம்பராய் இருந்த கிளப் ஒன்றிற்குப் போய் மூன்று நாட்கள் அங்கேயே கிடந்தார். புஷ்பவல்லி அவரை தேடி அழுதுகொண்டே வந்தார்."உங்களை எங்கே எல்லாம் தேடுவது?"
அப்படி ஏற்பட்ட உறவில் தன் தாய், மனைவி, இரண்டு பெண் குழந்தைகளோடு ஒரு Distance வந்துவிட்டது . புஷ்பவல்லி Very possessive lady!

புஷவல்லிக்கு இரண்டு பெண்குழந்தைகள். ரேகா,ராதா. சாவித்திரியை வீட்டுக்கு கூட்டிவந்த போது விளையாட்டாக புஷ்பவல்லி " சாவித்திரியையும் கட்டிக்கங்க " என்று சொன்னபோது வானத்திலிருந்து முப்பத்து முக்கோடி தேவர்களும் "ததாஸ்து " என்று சொல்லிவிட்டார்கள். ஆனால் விஷயம் சீரியஸ் ஆகி சாவித்திரி ஜெமினியுடன் இணைந்த போது அதை கடுமையாக எதிர்த்தவர் புஷ்வல்லி தான். வாகினி ஸ்டுடியோவில் சாவித்திரி மீது காரை ஏற்ற முயற்சிக்கிற அளவில் கடுமையான கோபம். சாவித்திரி பிணைப்பு அதிகமானவுடன் புஷ்பவல்லி குடும்பத்தை விட்டு ஜெமினி ஒதுங்கினார். ஒதுங்குதல் என்பதை விட புஷ்வல்லிக்கும் ஜெமினிக்கும் கடும்பகை அப்போது ஏற்பட்டு விட்டது என்று தான் சொல்லவேண்டும்.

சாவித்திரிக்கு இரண்டு குழந்தைகள். விஜயசாமுண்டீச்வரி , சதீஷ். சாவித்திரியுடன் கருத்து வேறுபாடு வந்த பின் வந்த 'பாமா விஜயம் ' ராஜஸ்ரீ கொஞ்சம் வித்தியாசமாக ஒரு நிபந்தனை விதித்தார். ' உங்கள் முதல் மனைவி பாப்ஜியை விவாக ரத்து செய்து விடுங்கள்.'ஜெமினி இந்த நிபந்தனை ஏற்படுத்திய கடுப்பில் " என் மனைவியின் பெயரை உச்சரிக்கக்கூட உனக்கு யோக்கியதை கிடையாது " என கடுமையாக ராஜஸ்ரீயிடம் சொல்லி விட்ட பின் அந்த உறவு அறுந்தது.

1970 களின் மத்தியில் ஜெமினியின் வீட்டிற்கு கமல் ஹாசன் தான் ஹிந்தி நடிகை ரேகாவை விருந்தாளி (!)யாக அழைத்து வந்து இன்ப அதிர்ச்சி கொடுத்தார்.

சாவித்திரி இறந்த போது புஷ்பவல்லி அந்த சாவுக்கு வந்திருந்தார்.


பாப்ஜியின் நான்கு மகள்கள், புஷ்பவல்லி யின் இரண்டு மகள்கள் , சாவித்திரியின் மகள் எல்லோரும் சேர்ந்து க்ரூப் போட்டோ எடுத்துக்கொண்டார்கள்.சதீஷ் ஜெமினியின் வீட்டில் கொஞ்ச நாள் இருந்திருக்கிறார். ஜெமினி கணேசன் 64வயதில் துப்பாக்கியால் தற்கொலை முயற்சி மேற்கொண்டதற்கு சாவித்திரி மகன் சதீஷ் குறித்த சர்ச்சை தான் காரணம் என்று ஹேஸ்யம் உண்டு .

ராஜஸ்ரீ உறவும் கசந்து பத்து ஆண்டுகளுக்குப் பின் சாவித்திரியின் மறைவுக்கும் பின் சிலவருடங்கள் கழிந்து, ஜெமினி ஒரு பேட்டியில் சொன்னார்." இவ்வளவு வருடங்கள் கழித்து எனக்கு ஒரு உண்மை புரிகிறது. என் முதல் மனைவி பாப்ஜியைத் தான் நான் மிகவும் காதலிக்கிறேன் என்கிற விஷயம் இவ்வளவு ஆண்டு கால வாழ்வுக்குப் பின் தான் தெரிகிறது ."

நாற்பது வருடங்களுக்கு முன் ' சாவன் பாதன் 'இந்தி படத்தில் நடித்த ரேகா பேட்டி கொடுத்தார். " என் தந்தை பிரபல தமிழ் நடிகர். "

" ஆமாம் பிரதர்! புஷ்பவல்லி யும் நானும் காதலித்து ஒன்றாக வாழ்ந்த போது பிறந்தவள் தான் ரேகா! நாங்கள் டைவர்ஸ் செய்துகொள்ளத்தேவையில்லாமல் போய்விட்டது. ஏனென்றால் நானும் புஷ்பவல்லியும் கணவன் மனைவியாக வாழ்ந்தாலும் திருமணம் செய்துகொள்ளவே இல்லை." என்று கூலாக சொன்னார்!


ஜெமினிகணேசன் பேச்சில் எதைப்பற்றியும் சுலபமாக அபிப்ராயம் சொல்பவராய் இருந்தார் என்பது தான் உடனே என் மனதுக்குப் பட்ட விஷயம்.

இரண்டு வருடம் கழித்து அவ்வை சண்முகியில் நடித்தார்.

நான்கு வருடம் கழித்து தான் ஜுலியானாவை திருமணம் செய்தார்.

கற்பகம்-1963

எனக்கு தெரிந்து வாழ்க்கையில் என்னுடன் முரண் பட்டவர்கள் உண்டே தவிர ,கெட்டவர்களை நான் சந்தித்ததே இல்லை. ஜெயகாந்தனின் ஒரு நடிகை நாடகம் பார்க்கிறாள் போன்ற கதைகளை படிக்கும் போது,உலகத்தில் நல்லவர்களை தவிர யாருமே இல்லை ஆனாலும் மனித பிரச்சினைகளுக்கும் அளவே இல்லை என்ற ரீதியில்தான் இருக்கும்.

கே.எஸ்.கோபாலகிருஷ்ணன் மேல் அளவற்ற மதிப்பு கொண்டவன் நான் என்ற முறையில் ,அவரும் ஜெமினியும் இணைந்து,மற்ற திலகங்களை மீறி 1963 இல் பிரம்மாண்ட வெற்றியை சுவைத்த ,வாலியின் ,விஜயாவின் நுழைவு வாயிலான கற்பகம் பற்றி பேச போகிறேன். பார்க்கும் தோறும், இந்த மாதிரி ஒரு நல்லசிவத்துடன்,ஒரு சுந்தரத்துடன்,ஒரு கற்பகத்துடன்,ஒரு அமுதாவுடன் ,ஏன் மற்ற பண்ணையாட்களுடன் ஒரு நாளாவது வாழ முடியாதா என்ற எண்ணமே மிகும்.

100 சதவிகித புத்தி கூர்மையுள்ள படத்தை(nan avanillai) அலசி விட்டதால்,100 சதவிகித இதயத்துக்கு இதம் தரும் இந்த படத்தை அலசுவதில் ஒரு இனிய சுவை.சிலர் இது போன்ற படங்களை synthetic ஆன ஒரு wishful assembly என்று உதறுவார்கள்.இருக்கட்டுமே,வாழ்க்கையில் நாம் சந்திக்கவே வாய்ப்பில்லாத தீமைகள்,தற்செயல்கள்,தீயவர்கள்,நல்லவர்களாக நடித்த தீயவர்கள் எல்லாவற்றையும் சகித்த நமக்கு,இந்த சுகமான சகிப்பினால் சுகிப்புதானே?

என்னதான் சொல்லுங்கள்,கே.எஸ்.ஜி படம் பார்க்கும் போது நமது கலாச்சாரத்துடன் இணைந்து ,அதன் நீட்சியாக பண்பட்ட நல்லிதயங்களுடன் வாழ்ந்து,ஒத்து,முரண்பட்டு,பிரச்சினைகளை சந்தித்து ,தீர்வு கண்டு, இல்லம் திரும்பும் ஒரு இதத்திற்கு இணை இல்லவே இல்லை. (கிட்டத்தட்ட ஒரு வீடு ஒரு மனிதன் ஒரு உலகம் ஹென்றிக்கு எளிமையான இணை இப்பட சுந்தரம்)

இப்படத்திற்கு வேறு யாரையோ கே.எஸ்.ஜி தேர்வு செய்திருந்தாராம். நல்ல வேளை, அப்படி ஒரு விபத்திலிருந்து தமிழக ரசிகர்கள் தப்பி, ஜெமினி-ரங்காராவ் இணைவில் மெய்மறந்தோம்.

அதுவரை நல்லவனாக வாழ்வதே ஒரு தண்டனை என்றே தமிழ் படங்கள் நமக்கு போதித்து வந்தன.கண்ணோ,கையோ,காலோ இழப்பது நிச்சயம், போனஸ் ஆக சந்தேகம்,உதாசீனம்,மற்றவர்களால் உறிஞ்ச படுதல் என்றெல்லாம் உப-பிரச்சினைகள் வேறு.இறுதியில் அகால சாவும் உண்டு .அதை மீறி நல்லிதயங்களால் சூழ பட்டு நல்வாழ்வு வாழும் மனிதனுக்கு சிறு சிறு பிரச்சினைகள் வந்தாலும் அவை மேலும் அவனை மெருகேற்றி ,நற்சூழலையே ஏற்படுத்தும் என்ற உணர்வை தந்த காவியம் கற்பகம்.இனி அதை விரிவாக அலசுவோம்.

விமர்சன ஆய்வு மரபின் படி கதை என்ற prelude தவிர்க்க முடியாதது என்பதால் அந்த மரபை பின்பற்றுகிறேன்.

மனைவியை இழந்த நல்லசிவம் பிள்ளை என்ற தர்ம சிந்தனை கொண்ட பெரும் பண்ணையார் ,தன் ஒரே மகள் கற்பகம் மற்றும் பட்டணத்தில் படிக்கும் மகன் ராஜாங்கம் என்ற இரு வாலிப செல்வங்களுடன் தனியாக,விசுவாசமான கணக்க பிள்ளையுடன் நல்வாழ்வு வாழ்பவர்.சுந்தரம் என்ற அநாதை சிறு விவசாயி ,தன்னுடைய தொழிலில் அக்கறை காட்டி நேர்வாழ்வு வாழ்பவன்.இந்த இரு நல்லிதயங்களும் கற்பகத்தை சுந்தரத்துக்கு மணமுடிப்பதில் வாழ்வில் இணைகிறது.மகன் ராஜாங்கம் ,தந்தையுடன் பிணங்கி,தாண்டவன் என்ற குணகேடு,மற்றும் சுயநலம் கொண்டவனின் பெண் பங்கஜத்தை திருமணம் செய்கிறான்.

நல்லசிவம் தன் பொறுப்புகளை சுந்தரத்திடம் ஒப்புவித்து அவனை வாரிசாகவே கருதுகிறார்.இதனால் கருத்து வேற்றுமை அதிகமானாலும்,பங்கஜம்-ராஜாங்கத்தின் பெண் குழந்தை கற்பகம்-சுந்தரத்தாலேயே போற்றி வளர்க்க படுகிறது.ஒரு மாடு முட்டி விபத்தில் கற்பகம் இறக்க,துயரத்தில் வாடும் சுந்தரத்தின் விருப்பமின்றியே தன் நண்பன் மகள் படித்த பண்புள்ள அமுதாவை சுந்தரத்திற்கு மறுமணம் செய்வித்து,குழந்தை மீனாட்சியின் அன்பை பெற்றால் சுந்தரத்தை அவள் மணவாழ்வில் நேர்செய்து விடலாம் என்றும் அமுதாவிற்கு,நல்லசிவம் ஆலோசனை சொல்கிறார்.சிறிது முரண்டுகள் மற்றும் பிரச்சினைகள் (தாண்டவன் உண்டாக்குபவை)முடிவில் சுந்தரம்-அமுதா-மீனாட்சி இணைந்து ,நல்லசிவத்தின் ஆசை படி நிறைவாக முடியும் படம்.

இந்த திரைக்கதையை படிப்பவர்கள் எப்படி இதனை சுவாரஸ்ய படமாக்க முடியும் என்று வியப்பர். சுவாரஸ்யம் மற்றுமல்ல இது ஒரு superhit படம்.அனைத்து தரப்பு மக்களையும் கவர்ந்து இன்று வரை ஒரு cult classic என்றே பேண படுகிறது.(இதன் சாயலில் வந்த முந்தானை முடிச்சும் மெகா வெற்றி)

இந்த படத்தின் highlights என்றால் கே.எஸ்.ஜியின் வசனங்கள்,ஜெமினி-ரங்கராவ் ஆகியோரின் அபார நடிப்பு,விஸ்வநாதன்-ராமமூர்த்தியின் பாடல்கள்(வாலி எழுத்தில்),நான்கு பாடல்களும் சுசீலா சோலோ(ஆண் பாடகரே கிடையாது),கர்ணனின் நல்ல படபிடிப்பு .புதுசாக இளசாக விஜயா.

இதன் தனி பட்ட சிறப்புகளை விரிவாக அலசுவோம்.

நடிகர்திலகம் நடிப்பு,அதன் வீச்சு,வேறு படும் நேர்த்தி இவையெல்லாம் அளவற்ற பிரமிப்பை தந்து ,அவரை உயர பீடத்தில் வைத்து தொழ செய்து விடும்.ஆனால் ஜெமினியின் நடிப்பு வேறு விதம்.உங்களுக்கு சிறு வயதில் உங்களை பார்த்து புன்னகைத்து,உங்களுக்கு அவ்வப்போது சாக்லேட் தரும் பக்கத்து வீட்டு பாந்தமான மாமாவை நினைக்கும் தோறும்,மனதில் ஒரு ரம்மிய உணர்ச்சி பெருக்கு உடைத்து வருமே?அந்த ரகம்.

அதுவும் இந்த படத்தில் ரங்காராவ் இணைவில் அவர் தந்த இதத்தை எழுத்தில் வடிப்பது இயலுமா?முயற்சிக்கிறேன்.

இந்த படத்தில் அவரை தவிர வேறு யாரேனும் பொருந்த முடியுமா என்று பார்த்தால்,எல்லோருமே நடித்து ஊதி விட கூடிய சாதாரண பாத்திரமே.ஆனால் இந்த பாத்திரத்திற்கு அவர் அளித்த அமரிக்கையான மெருகை,ஒளியை,உண்மை தன்மையை வேறொரு நடிகர் கனவு கூட காண முடியாது.ஒரு சாதாரண நல்லிதயம் கொண்ட விவசாயியாக,மற்றோருடன் மென்மையான அணுகு முறை,ஒத்திசைவு-சலசலப்பு சூழ்நிலையில் அவர் குடும்பத்தில் காட்டும் யதார்த்தமான இதமான அணுகுமுறைகள்,மனைவியிடம் ஒரு மென்மையான பரிவுடன் கூடிய நிஜ காதல்,குழந்தையை போற்றி அனைத்து வளர்க்கும் இயல்பான கொஞ்சல் கலந்த அன்பு,மனைவியை இழக்கும் அதிர்ச்சி,தொடர்ந்த பற்றற்ற விரக்தி,பெரியவருக்கும் மன சஞ்சலம் தராமல்,இரண்டாவது வாழ்க்கையில் ஒட்டவும் முடியாத தடுமாற்றம் என்று நண்பர்களே ,இந்த அற்புத நடிப்பை பார்த்து மட்டும் மகிழாதீர்கள் அதனுடன் உணர்ச்சி பூர்வமாக ஒன்றி அந்த நிமிடங்களில் உண்மையாக வாழ்ந்து பாருங்கள்.என் எழுத்தின் விகசிப்பு புரியும்.

ரங்கா ராவ் ,ஒரு மனைவியை இழந்து சொந்தங்களில் தோய்ந்து ,உண்மையை நேசித்து,ஊர் உறவுகளுக்கு உண்மையாய்,உபயோகமாய் நெறி வாழ்வு வாழும் நிஜ மனிதராய் அவ்வளவு நேர்த்தியாய் தன் இயல்பு நடிப்பை தந்து,படத்தினை நடத்தி செல்லும் சூத்திரதாரியாய் பரிமளிப்பார்.மற்ற பாத்திரங்களை ஒளியூட்ட வைக்கும் ரங்கராவ் அவர்களின் பங்களிப்பு.அவர் சூரியனாய் ,மற்ற நிலவுகளுக்கு ஒளி கொடுத்து பரிமளிக்க வைப்பார்.

பெண்ணிடம் காட்டும் பரிவு,உண்மை மனிதர்களை நேசிக்கும் நேர்மை,உண்மையற்றவற்றை சுடும் பிடிவாத நிராகரிப்பு,மகன் ஸ்தானத்தில் மருமகனை நேசித்து அவன் நலனில் காட்டும் பிடிவாத அன்பு,தன்னுடைய கொண்டு வந்த மருமகள் உறவை ஓட்ட வைக்க முயற்சிக்கும் தவிப்பு,அந்த முயற்சி தோற்கும் போது உருகியோடும் தன்னிரக்கம்,என்று வாழ்ந்திருப்பார்.என்னவொரு இதயத்தை பிளக்கும் இதமான வன்மையான தென்றல்!

கே.ஆர்.விஜயா நடித்து பரிச்சயம் காணா புது மொட்டு.ஆனால் இந்த கபடம் ,சூது தெரியாத கிராமத்து இள மொட்டு பாத்திரத்திற்கு,இந்த மங்கள கரமான rawness அவ்வளவு பாந்தம்.

வீ.கே.ஆர் இவ்வளவு நல்ல தன்மையுடன் இதமாக நடிக்கவும் செய்வாரா என்று ஆச்சரியம் தரும் ,இணைப்பு பாலமாய் செயல் படும் விசுவாச கணக்க பிள்ளை.

முத்துராமன்,ஷீலா இருவருமே வில்லத்தனம் இல்லாத குடும்ப பிணக்கத்தை ,வேறுபாடுகளை ,முரண்டுகளை காட்டுவார்கள்.எம்.ஆர்.ராதா வழக்கம் போல்.

இந்த படத்தில் ஒட்டாதவர்கள் நாகைய்யாவும் ,சாவித்திரியும்.பாத்திர படைப்பின் குழப்பத்தில்,நடிகையர் திலகத்தின் உழைப்பும்,தேர்ச்சியும் வீணாகி விடும்.

கற்பகம் படத்தில் மிக முக்கிய அம்சம் வசனம்.என்னதான் கே.எஸ்.ஜி படத்தில் வசனங்கள் அதிகம்,அவரே எல்லா பாத்திரத்தின் வாயிலாகவும் பேசி விடுவார்,எல்லா பத்திரங்களும் நல்ல தன்மையில் லீட் எடுக்கும்,அதிக பிரசங்கம் இருக்கும் என குற்றசாட்டுக்கள் வந்தாலும் நான் அதை கசக்கி தூக்கி எரிந்து விட்டு, அவர் வசனங்களில் வந்த தெய்வ பிறவி,படிக்காத மேதை,குமுதம்,சாரதா,கற்பகம்,கை கொடுத்த தெய்வம்,செல்வம்,பேசும் தெய்வம்,பணமா பாசமா ,சித்தி போன்ற படங்களை எவ்வளவு முறை வேண்டுமானாலும் பார்த்தும் ,கேட்டும் மகிழ்வேன்.

தமிழ் நாட்டில் வள வளவென்று உரக்க பேசும் மனிதர்கள்தானே அதிகம்?நம் படங்கள் அதைத்தானே பிரதிபலிக்க வேண்டும்?அதைத்தான் அருமையான லாஜிக் கொண்டு,சுவையாக ,சுத்தமாக,நற்தன்மையோடு கே.எஸ்.ஜி தந்தார்.

கற்பகம் படத்தில் எனக்கு பிடித்த காட்சிகள் என்றால் அனைத்துமே. குறிப்பாக ஆரம்ப ஜெமினி சம்பந்த பட்ட விருந்துக்கு வரும் காட்சி,கல்யாண சம்மந்தம் பேசும் காட்சி, ஜெமினி-விஜயா அன்னியோன்ய காட்சிகள்,குழந்தையை வைத்து வரும் காட்சிகள்,ஜெமினி மற்ற குடும்பத்தாருடன் அனுசரிக்கும் காட்சிகள்,ரங்கா ராவ் ஜெமினியை மறு கல்யாணம் செய்ய வற்புறுத்தும் காட்சிகள்,ரங்கராவ்-சாவித்திரி காட்சிகள் எல்லாமே ஒரு அன்பான நட்பான குடும்பத்துடன் வாழும் இதத்தை தருபவை.

சுசிலாவின் தேன் குரலில் மன்னவனே இதயத்தை துளைக்கும். ஆயிரம் இரவுகள் முதலிரவு மனநிலை இன்றும் தரும்.அத்தை மடி நம்மை குழந்தையாக்கி விடும்.பக்கத்து வீட்டு நல்ல பாட்டு.ஆனால் படத்தில் ஒட்டாது.(மனசுக்குள்ளே தேரோட்ட மைவிழியில் வடம் பிடிச்சான்)

இந்த படத்தில் melodrama ,செண்டிமெண்ட் எல்லாமே நல்லிதயங்கள் சம்பத்த பட்ட ,நடக்க கூடிய ஒன்று என்பதால் படத்தில் ஒன்றுவதில் எந்த தடையும் இருக்காது.

கர்ணனின் கேமரா படத்தின் சிறப்பம்சங்களில் ஒன்று.படத்தின் தன்மை,மனநிலைகள் ஆகியவற்றுடன் ஒன்றும்.கருப்பு-வெள்ளை படங்களின் சுவை ,அவை நம் மனதிற்கு தரும் இதம் அலாதி.(ஒன்று தெரியுமா?நம் அத்தனை பேரின் கனவுகளும் கருப்பு-வெள்ளையே.பத்தாயிரத்தில் ஒருவருக்கே கலர் கனவு யோகம்)

ஆரம்ப காலத்தில், ஜெமினி ஸ்டுடியோவில் நிர்வாகப் பொறுப்பு பணியில் ஜெமினிகணேசன் இருந்த போது, அவருக்கு நடிப்பு மேல் தான் ஆசை இருந்தது. அதனால், ஜெமினி ஸ்டுடியோவை விட்டு விலகி, நாராயணன் கம்பெனியில், மாதம், 1,000 ரூபாய் சம்பளத்திற்கு நடிக்க அழைத்த போது, தயக்கத்துடன் ஒப்புக் கொண்டார். முதல் படம், தாய் உள்ளம். வில்லன் வேடம் தான் கிடைத்தது.

தொடர்ந்து, நாராயணன் கம்பெனியின் உரிமையாளர் நாராயணன் , கணவனே கண் கண்ட தெய்வம் என்ற படத் தயாரிப்பில் ஈடுபட்டார். அதில் கதைப்படி கதாநாயகனுக்கு, வீரம் நிறைந்த வாலிபன் மற்றும் கூன் விழுந்து, அருவருப்பான முகம் கொண்ட இரு வேறுபட்ட வேடம். அதை அழகான தோற்றம் கொண்ட ஜெமினி கணேசனால் செய்ய முடியுமா என்று சந்தேகப்பட்டார் தயாரிப்பாளர்.

இதை அறிந்த ஜெமினி கணேசன் ஒரு தந்திரம் செய்தார். அவரே ஒரு மேக்கப் மேனிடம் சென்று, கூன் விழுந்து அருவருப்பான பிச்சைக்காரன் போன்ற தோற்றத்தில், யாரும் கண்டுபிடிக்க முடியாத அளவுக்கு மேக்கப் போட்டுக் கொண்டார்.

அந்த தோற்றத்துடன், காலை நேரத்தில் தயாரிப்பாளர் வீட்டு வாசலில் நின்றார். ஏதோ பிச்சைக்காரன் என நினைத்து, அந்த வீட்டில் இருந்தவர்கள் கண்டு கொள்ளவில்லை. ஆனால், எதிர்பாராதவிதமாக திடீரென்று வீட்டிற்கு உள்ளேயே நுழைந்து விட்டார்.

அந்த சமயத்தில், கம்பெனி முதலாளி நாராயண ஐயங்கார், ஜெமினியை அடையாளம் தெரியாமல் பிச்சைக்காரர் என நினைத்து, திட்டி, வெளியே போகுமாறு விரட்டினார். நிலைமை விபரீதமாகும் முன், வேறு வழி இல்லாமல், "நான் தாங்க கணேசன்...' என்று வேடத்தை கலைத்து, சிரித்தபடி நின்ற ஜெமினியை பார்த்து, பிரமித்து போனார் தயாரிப்பாளர்.

"நீங்க என் மீது சந்தேகப்பட்டீர்கள் இல்லையா? கூன் வேடத்திற்கு நான் பொருத்தமானவன் என்று, நீங்கள் ஏற்றுக் கொள்ளத்தான், நான் அப்படி நடித்தேன்...' என்று சொன்ன போது, ஜெமினியை கட்டி அணைத்துக் கொண்டார். "கண்டிப்பாக நீதான் நடிக்கிறாய்...' என்று உறுதி அளித்தார். அஞ்சலி தேவியுடன், ஜோடி சேர்ந்து நடித்த, கணவனே கண்கண்ட தெய்வம் வெள்ளி விழா கொண்டாடி, சாதனை படைத்தது.

வீரபாண்டிய கட்டபொம்மன் படத்தில், வெள்ளையத்தேவன் கதாபாத்திரத்திற்கு, முதலில், எஸ்.எஸ்.ராஜேந்திரன் தான் ஒப்பந்தம் செய்யப்பட்டிருந்தார். அவர் நடிக்க முடியாமல் போகவே, ஜெமினியை தேடி வந்தனர். " என்னால் நடிக்க முடியவில்லை...' என எஸ்.எஸ்.ராஜேந்திரனிடமிருந்து கடிதம் வாங்கி வந்தால் தான் ஒப்புக்கொள்வேன்...' என்று டைரக்டர் பி.ஆர்.பந்துலுவிடம் சொல்லி விட்டார் ஜெமினி. அவரும் கடிதத்தோடு வந்த பின்தான், நடிக்க ஒப்புக் கொண்டார்.

இப்போதெல்லாம் ஒரு நடிகர், நடிகைக்கு கிடைக்கும் வாய்ப்பை, மறைமுகமாக தட்டி பறித்து, இன்னொரு நடிகர், நடிகை அதில் நடிப்பது சாதாரணமாகிவிட்டது. ஆனால், அந்த காலத்தில் ஒருவருக்கொருவர் விட்டுக் கொடுப்பர் என்பதற்கு மேற்கூறிய சம்பவம் ஒரு உதாரணம்.

Through her home productions, Anjali Devi as the heroine offered the anchor to GG's life-ship to endure with Tamil Screen with his cult image as the demi-God of Love!

Anjali Devi (24 August 1927 – 13 January 2014) was an Indian actress, former model and producer in Telugu and Tamil. She was well known for her role as the mythological Sita in Lava Kusha as well as for the titular roles in movies like Suvarna Sundari and Anarkali.


Early life
Anjali Devi was born in Peddapuram, East Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh, India, as Anjamma. She changed her name to Anjani Kumari when acting in dramas. Later, director C. Pullaiah changed her name to Anjali Devi.

Career
As actress
She was a theatre artiste before venturing into movies. Her debut film role was as Lohitasya in Raja Harishchandra in 1936. Her first movie as a heroine was Kashtajeevi by L. V. Prasad in 1940, but that movie was abandoned after three reels shooting. Later, C.Pullayya discovered her and gave her the opportunity to star as Mohini in Gollabhama. Based on her acting ability and looks, she became a star overnight in 1947. She eventually acted in more than 350 Telugu films and a few Tamil and Kannada films as the heroine.

She acted in Lava Kusha, a milestone film and the first color film in the Telugu film industry in 1963. She is well known for playing Sita in Lava Kusha and her performances in films like Suvarna Sundari and Anarkali were also appreciated. She has acted in nearly 500 films. Brundavanam (1992), Anna Vadina (1993) and Police Alludu (1994) were the last few films of her career. In Balaiah's Police Alludu and Anna Vadina she appeared alongside Brahmanandam. She acted in various roles, such as a damsel, an angel, a dancer, a demon, a goddess, a traditional woman and later in mother roles.

As producer
In 1955 she produced the film Anarkali, in which she herself played the titular role, with Akkineni Nageswara Rao as Prince Salim. Then she produced V. Madhusudan Rao's Bhakta Tukaram and Chandipriya. Bollywood and Tollywood actress Jayapradha played the lead role in the latter alongside Shobhan Babu and Chiranjeevi. As a producer she has produced 27 films. She was an ardent devotee of Sathyasai Baba and produced a tele-serial on Sathyasai.

Personal life
She married P. Adinarayana Rao, a music director, in 1940. They settled in Chennai. They have two sons. Together, they produced many Telugu films under the banner, Anjali Pictures. Their granddaughter, Saila Rao, is also an actress.

Death
She died at the age of 86 on 13 January 2014 at Vijaya Hospital, in Chennai, with her organs donated to Ramachandra Medical College.

Penn is a 1954 Tamil romantic comedy film written by Ra. Venkatachalam and directed by M. V. Raman. The film starred Vyjayanthimala, Gemini Ganesan, S. Balachander and Anjali Devi in the lead while Chittor V. Nagaiah, V. K. Ramasamy, K. N. Kamlam, K.R. Chellam and K. Sankarapani as the ensemble cast, was produce by A. V. Chettiar of AVM Productions. The film's score was composed by R.Sudharsanam with the lyrics were provided by Papanasam Sivan and Udumalai Narayana Kavi, Ku. Sa. Krishnamurthy, K. P. Kamakshi and V. Seetharaman. Editing was done by K. Shankar and M. V. Raman while the camera was handled by T. Muthu Sami.

The film's story revolves around two friends played by Vyjayanthimala and Anjali Devi.

The success of this movie basked the producer A. V. Chettiar to remade it in Hindi as Ladki with Kishore Kumar and Bharat Bhushan in S. Balachander and Gemini Ganesan role respectively. The film also made simultaneously in Telugu as Sangham with N. T. Rama Rao in Gemini Ganesan's role while S. Balachander reprises his role from the original. Among the cast Vyjayanthimala, Anjali Devi and Chittor V. Nagaiah are the only actors to reprises their role in all three language.

Kanavaney Kankanda Deivam,(1955) a Narayanan Company production directed by noted filmmaker of yesteryear T. R. Raghunath, was rather like folklore, written by Sadasiva Bramham (he was so famous and successful in Telugu cinema that he was known as Katha Sivabramham!), Umachandran (Poornam Viswanathan's brother), and K. V. Srinivasan, (also a filmmaker sadly forgotten now). It had music by well-known Hindi film music composer Hemant Kumar and noted Telugu film music composer Addepalli Rama Rao.

Gemini Ganesan by now established as a star played the lead opposite Anjali Devi. (He took his bow in cinema as hero at 33 with Manam Pol Mangalyam in 1953). Lalitha was cast as a vamp. Not many are aware that she was brought on board after production commenced, as a substitute for P. Bhanumathi. Surprising, yet true.

Bhanumathi who made a splash way back in 1945 as a vamp in B. N. Reddi's Swargaseema entered Tamil cinema playing such roles in her first few films. She was similarly cast in this film and a song filmed later on Lalitha, ‘Unnai kann theduthey...' was first rendered by Bhanumathi and the sequence was shot when she chose to walk out of the film. This song (P. Susheela) is still fondly remembered by Tamil movie buffs.

(Bhanumathi told this writer years later that in the song recorded with P. Susheela, the hiccups were hers! This was one of Susheela's early hits as a playback singer.)

Others in the cast included M. N. Nambiar, V. Nagaiah, M. N. Rajam, T. P. Muthulakshmi and 'Friend' Ramasami.

This film narrated the story of a king who loses his sight and needs a ‘Nagi Jyothi' (‘serpent light'!) found in ‘Sarpaloka' (serpent world!). A young man (Gemini Ganesan) working in the palace and in love with the princess (Anjali Devi) undertakes the hazardous journey of going to the netherworld and getting the magic light from the hood of a snake in the custody of the serpent queen (Lalitha). The queen is attracted to the young man who pretends to be in love with her mainly to get the light. He succeeds in getting it and the queen curses him to become an ugly man. The princess marries the prince, but they are banished and live in a hut. Soon a boy is born. The devoted wife faces many trials and tribulations before she and her son help her husband regain his original form. And they live happily thereafter…

The interesting story with many twists and turns was well narrated on screen by Raghunath, younger brother of well-known director Raja Chandrasekhar. He began his life as a sound recordist after getting his M.A. degree, and later joined his brother in Bombay to work as his assistant and soon graduated to film direction. Not many are aware that he directed the dance sequences of Madhavi in Kannagi and married the actor (M. Saroja). The multilingual filmmaker of today, Kartik Raghunath, is his son.

One of the contributing factors to the box office success of the film was the melodious music. Some songs became hits, the most popular being, ‘Unnai kann theduthey…'

The movie ran for hundred days at many centres and was dubbed into Malayalam and Hindi (Devta). Anjali Devi, then in her late 20s, was glamorous in this movie, and in the later sequences as the devoted wife fighting for the well-being of her husband revealed that she was also an actor capable of touching emotional heights. The popularity of the handsome as ever Gemini Ganesan soared and the success of this film helped him reach the top where he stayed for many decades ….

Remembered for: Excellent onscreen narration and melodious music with some of the songs becoming hits.

Vepathur Kittu, a noted Tamil journalist and screenplay writer, worked in Gemini Studios as creative assistant to the studio’s boss and Indian movie mogul S.S. Vasan and to T.G. Raghavachari (who signed his film as Acharya). Kittu was always looking for new story ideas and was responsible for the basic content of Gemini Studios’ magnum opuses Chandralekha, Motor Sundaram Pillai and Vaazhkai Padagu.

He was a voracious reader and a movie buff who never missed a good English movie running in city theatres. He told this writer that he read a French novel (translated), which was the inspiration for Vaazhkai Padagu. The film was first made by Gemini Studios in Hindi as Zindagi (1962) under the direction of Ramanand Sagar, with Vyjayanthimala and Rajendra Kumar in the lead. The Tamil version Vaazhkai Padagu expectedly was written by Kittu, and directed by C. Srinivasan, popularly known as ‘Hollywood’ Srinivasan because he had trained at the Mecca Of The Movies. He worked for Gemini Studios for a few years and moved to Nigeria where he designed and established the Nigerian National Television Network with much success.

Vaazhkai Padagu begins with a young, attractive and unemployed woman Seetha (Devika) taking up stage acting as career. A wealthy man Kannabhiran (Balajee) is after her, and uses his henchman (Manohar) to kidnap her. During the attempt, Rajan (Gemini Ganesan) and his clever dog ‘Honey’ rescue her and the two fall in love. Rajan is the son of a zamindar (Ranga Rao), who has a poor opinion of Seetha. However, after many hurdles, the two marry. The director of Seetha’s stage troupe, Gopal (Muthuraman) too is in love with her, but she never responds. When Kannabhiran is murdered, Gopal is arrested. He has an alibi — on the night of the murder, a young woman stayed with him in his house, but then he does not disclose her identity. The woman turns out to be Seetha, and she gives them the evidence. One of the members of the jury is her father-in-law, and complications follow, with the husband leaving her and wishing to marry again. However, the truth comes out and the family is united in the end.

Vaazhkai Padagu fared well at the box-office. The film was Devika’s first for Gemini Studios. Her performance in this film was brilliant and she virtually carried the film on her shoulders. An import from Tamil theatre, she became a star playing the lead role in many Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam movies thereafter. Gemini Ganesan as the hero and Ranga Rao too give impressive performances, as does the smart dog. Aada Brathuku
