A two-time winner of the Academy Award (Oscar), A. R. Rahman is popularly known as the man who has redefined contemporary Indian music. Hailed by Time magazine as the ‘Mozart of Madras’, Rahman, according to a BBC estimate, has sold more than 150 million copies of his work comprising of music from more than 100 film soundtracks and albums across over half a dozen languages, including landmark scores such as 'Roja', 'Bombay', Dil Se', 'Taal', 'Lagaan', 'Vandemataram' and more recently, 'Jodhaa Akbar', 'Delhi 6' and 'Slumdog Millionaire'.

Rahman pursued music as a career at a very young age and after assisting leading musicians in India went on to compose jingles and scores for popular Indian television features. He also obtained a degree in western classical music from the Trinity College of Music, London and set up his own in-house studio called Panchathan Record-Inn at Chennai.

In 1991, noted film maker Mani Ratnam offered Rahman a movie called ‘Roja’ which was a run-away success and brought nationwide fame and acclaim to the composer. The movie also won Rahman the Indian National Award for the best music composer, the first time ever by a debutant. Since then, Rahman has gone on to win the National Award 3 more times, the most ever by any music composer.

In 1997, to commemorate 50 years of Indian Independence, Sony Music signed up Rahman as its first artiste in South Asia. The result was ‘Vande Mataram’, an album that instantly made Indians relate to it and succeeded in rekindling the spirit of patriotism.

In 2001, Andrew Lloyd Webber, the well known composer of musicals like ‘Phantom of the Opera’ & ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ invited Rahman to compose for his musical, ‘Bombay Dreams’, the first time he would produce a musical he did not compose for. ‘Bombay Dreams’ opened to packed houses at London’s West End and had an unprecedented run for 2 years and later premiered at New York’s Broadway. Rahman recently composed the score for the stage production of 'The Lord of the Rings', one of the most expensive productions mounted on stage.

Rahman has undertaken several sellout concert tours in over 30 international destinations including one at the prestigious Hollywood Bowl in 2006.

Recently, Time magazine rated the soundtrack of ‘Roja’ in the Top 10 of their all time best movie soundtracks of the world; The Guardian, UK, listed the soundtrack of ‘Bombay’ in ‘1000 albums to listen before you die’.

Rahman’s music led him to be noticed internationally with several of his tracks featuring in movies such as 'The Lord of War', 'Inside Man' and 'The Accidental Husband'. His composition, Bombay Theme holds the distinction of being featured in over 50 international compilations. He also scored the music for the Hollywood productions, 'Elizabeth - The Golden Age', 'Slumdog Millionaire' and the Chinese movie, ‘Warriors of Heaven & Earth' produced by Sony Pictures.

In 2008, Rahman's work gained global prominence and accolades with the extraordinary success of his score for 'Slumdog Millionaire' that won 8 Academy Awards including two for Rahman, for Best Score and Best Song. Rahman won over 15 awards for his score including the Golden Globe and the BAFTA.

Rahman has been bestowed with the 'Padma Shri', one of India's highest national civilian honours, recognizing his contribution to music, in addition to several other awards including 4 Indian National Film Awards and 24 Filmfare Awards, India's leading recognition for films. He has also been conferred with honorary doctorates from the Aligarh Muslim University and the Middlesex University.

Rahman has expanded his focus to newer horizons like setting up the A R Rahman Foundation to help poor and underprivileged children. He released his first English single, ‘Pray For Me Brother’ in 2007, with proceeds from the sales going to the foundation. He also serves as the UN Ambassador for the 2015 Millenium Development Goals. Rahman has also announced initiatives to establish a tradition in western classical music in India and recently embarked on an ambitious venture to set up the KM Music Conservatory and the KM Music Symphony Orchestra based out of Chennai, India.

New Delhi, Sept 1 (PTI) He may be coming back to his roots with his second album 'Identity' but UK based artiste Raghav says that he has no plans to become a Bollywood playback singer.

The 'Angel Eyes' hitmaker who had grabbed headlines when he turned down the superhit song 'Twist' from 'Love Aaj Kal', says that Bollywood is not his priority right though he is willing to give up everything to work with Oscar winning musician AR Rahman.

"I am a singer and songwriter, it is a 50-50 thing and these two passions of mine cannot be separated. I turned down the song because I want to write my own songs and if I get an offer from Bollywood which lets me do both, I will say yes," Raghav told PTI in an interview.

[tscii:f034acaf2d]Another recognition for ARR!
IndiaGlitz [Friday, September 04, 2009]

ARR’s fans are expecting the Hindi audio release of ‘Blue’ on September 12th and his long term project ‘Sultan - The Warrior’ is also expected soon. While people are looking forward for his future projects to do the magic again, he has received a new esteem for his ‘Slumdog Millionaire’.

Yeah, here comes another feather on the cap of our Mozart of Madras. The American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has made Rahman its primary member. The recognition is given on the basis of his achievement through the Golden Globe Award and the Oscars both for Danny Boyle’s ‘Slumdog Millionaire’.

So, ARR will fly to America every year to vote for his choice among the Oscars nominees. Moreover he will be receiving the red carpet honour throughout his lifetime!

Wow! Do we have to say how happy we feel for him? Jai ho ARR!

anand its a big project.. sir malayalm la kandippa oru padam pannanum.. ennoda aasai kooda , athan intha padathai ethir paakuren, even if he is not going to work for Yodha, he should do atleast one malayalam movie soon. :) dont think so! guess tis was a rumour that Lal was gonna act in it, latest news is that its gonna be jagadhy and then some other young hero in the movie. could very well be like Kilukkam's (Lal's superhit movie) part 2 (in other words a sequel without Lal and a flop). Even ARR wont be a part of it i guess

yeah thats sad if Lal is not there in the sequel :( , they have changed the cast and crew too, now the director is sanjeev sivan not sangeeth sivan right? . there are chances of changes in MD too.. guess the whole movie might not take off. they said its gonna be a 3D movie :?

yeah  they going to mess up everything ..

I never expected ARR to win anyway...he didn't compose many songs in 2007 and except Guru and ATM, the other albums were not really talked about.

But I really wish he would get it for 2008- Jodha Akbar had excellent music :D

Yuvraaj might be one of the contenders for 2008 but Jodha Akhbar definitely has a better chance of winning...going by the fact that JA swept most of the awards that year.

[tscii:b9235493b7]Farhan Akhtar turns down AR Rahman’s song request
Updated on Tuesday, September 08, 2009, 16:36 IST Spicezee Bureau

Mumbai: Although international biggies are queuing up to work with the Maestro from Madras, AR Rahman, but our desi actors are yet to realise his genius as they carelessly put aside opportunities to share the stage with him. And one such airy star is Farhan Akhtar, who turned down a personal invitation from the Oscar winning musician to sing a track for ‘Blue’.

So, while most artists would do anything for a chance to work with Rahman, Farhan chose to decline the offer as the actor wants to sing only for films that feature him.

According to the latest Bollywood news, Rahman was much too eager for Farhan to sing for a track named ‘Fiqrana’ in ‘Blue’. So much so was the musician looking forward to Farhan singing that he had even composed the track keeping in mind Farhan’s range and style..

But the actor gave Rahman a rude shock when he decided to state a firm ‘no’. Disappointed by the actor’s attitude Rahman then asked Vijay Prakash of ‘Yuvvraj’ and ‘Swades’ fame to sing the track.

Confirming the news, ‘Blue’ director Tony D`Souza said, "We were very keen to have Farhan sing for us. But he couldn`t. So we got Vijay Prakash for ‘Fiqrana’”.

[tscii:6526e4e038]Rahman and Shekhar Kapur join hands for short film Passage

IANS | Thursday, 10 September , 2009, 10:53

After working together in Elizabeth- The Golden Age, music maestro A R Rahman and internationally acclaimed filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, have once again joined hands for Kapur's first ever short film Passage.

A special screening of the film was held over the weekend on the island of La Giudecca. The charming I Granai della Republica was transformed into a magical space that played host to a soiree of glamorous stars. Shekhar Kapur, A R Rahman, Haley Bennett and Nadja Swarovski were among the celebrities who were seen enjoying Venetian cocktails and canapés.

The guests who viewed Passage at a private screening of the short film, were enthralled by a live orchestral performance by India's Kavita Baliga who sang a number from the soundtrack composed by the Academy Award Winner.

Passage, directed by Kapur and produced by Curious Pictures Production and Swarovski Entertainment, stars Julia Stiles (Cry Of The Owl, The Bourne Ultimatum), Lily Cole and Haley Benett (Marley and Me, Music and Lyrics). The film revolves around the lives of three young women. Together with A R Rahman's score, Kapur's graceful images merge into a highly emotional and enigmatic passage that leads from despair and loss to reconciliation. The camera itself acts as a kaleidoscope exploring a non-linear time-frame leaving it ultimately for the viewer to interpret the meaning of the enchanting and dream-like film.

[tscii:ca9127a3af]10 Soundtracks that changed the world - NOW Magazine

Film soundtracks have had a huge influence on mainstream listening tastes. Here are 10 albums that forever altered the musical landscape.

The Harder They Come (1972)
With this album, Desmond Dekker, Toots & the Maytals and, of course, Jimmy Cliff endeared themselves and the genre of ska and roots reggae to a new audience worldwide – particularly in the UK, where Dekker would later become a Mod sensation and Toots Hibbert would be covered by the Clash and other punks. Nothing’s better than the originals, though, which sound as good today as they did on their release date.

A Hard Day’s Night (1964)
It’s impossible to separate the influence of the Beatles’ first film from that of the soundtrack itself. Richard Lester’s mockumentary spotlighting the perils of the Fab Four’s mega-fame was a precursor of the music video and paved the way for the Monkees’ TV series. But the LP, the Beatles’ first with all-original material, had its own impact, especially George Harrison’s work on his Rickenbacker 12-string, which moved many bands, including the Byrds, to go for a harder, more rock ’n’ roll sound.

Shaft (1971)
To introduce the black private dick who’s a sex machine to all the chicks, Isaac Hayes lays down a sonic wall of funk perfectly matched to Richard Roundtree’s bad-mother swagger. But the Oscar-winning Theme From Shaft was just the first track in a sinewy soul score that still makes Gordon Parks’s 1971 actioner stand out from the blaxploitation pack.

Saturday Night Fever (1977)
The iconic dance film that made John Travolta a star launched the disco craze across the world. Unfortunately, the plot was based on a completely fabricated article by a writer who later confessed to having no knowledge or understanding of the culture, and the extremely successful soundtrack has since been criticized for contributing to the whitewashing of the black and gay roots of disco in favour of the Bee Gees’ mainstream pop version.

Wild Style (1982)
Hip-hop was pretty much unknown outside of a few American inner cities when Wild Style was released, making its soundtrack the first time most of the world heard the genre. A number of similar films soon followed, but this was the first to expose the culture, and featured early innovators like Grandmaster Caz, Fab 5 Freddy, Grand Wizard Theodore and the Cold Crush Brothers.

Purple Rain (1984)
In the film, Prince takes his muse, Apollonia, on a motorcycle ride out to a quiet spot by the lake where skinny dipping was an inevitability. Within minutes, Apollonia’s jaw-dropping physique is on full display. But this, one of the film’s more satisfying scenes, has nothing on Prince’s flawless soundtrack. Purple Rain was for him what Thriller was for MJ – a career-defining hit.

Singles (1992)
The grunge soundtrack for this rom-com eclipsed the actual film, becoming a bestseller months before it even hit theatres. Nirvana, one of the only Seattle bands not included on the soundtrack, had already blown up the year before, but this compilation, including Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains, brought the music into the mainstream, leading to a shortage of cheap flannel shirts and an abundance of generic alt-rock radio stations.

Pulp Fiction (1994)
You could argue that Quentin Tarantino had already made his soundtrack mark with Reservoir Dogs, but this was the one that really made it into the popular consciousness. The mixture of surf, early rock’ n’ roll and soul brought guitar hero Dick Dale back from obscurity and introduced a new generation to classic R&B sounds, reminding the world that Al Green’s version of Let’s Stay Together is the only one that really matters. (Sorry, Tina Turner.)

O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)
By the time this soundtrack hit shelves, the Coen brothers were known for memorable soundtracks. (Kenny Rogers’s Just Dropped In is rarely played without a Big Lebowski reference.) But this T-Bone Burnett-curated mix of vintage bluegrass, both originals and well-done covers, grabbed more attention than the movie.

Slumdog Millionaire (2008)
Thora Birch may have danced to Jaan Pehechan Ho over the Ghost World credits, but Slumdog Millionaire put Bollywood on the Billboard charts. The Slumdog mix juggles propulsive pop (M.I.A.’s Paper Planes), A.R. Rahman’s Bollywood-flavoured underscore and the theme from Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? to guide viewers through the movie’s time-scrambled structure – all the while building to Oscar-winning number Jai Ho. That beats a flatful of Scottish junkies from that other Danny Boyle pic, Trainspotting.

From Shekar Kapoor's blog entry "In Venice with A R Rahman, David Adjaye and SadhGuru" about a screening of his short film "Passage":

Rahman's compositions for the film include a new Waltz that he wrote and recorded in about 3 days. It is a stunning composition, and people were convinced that it was composed by an earlier Classical Master. But no, it is from our very own 'Mozart of Madras' as the Time Magazine called him - incidentally a name I coined in an interview to the same magazine. Then the evening was capped by Rahman holding the audiences completely spell bound when he played on the Piano.

Kalmadi joins austerity bandwagon

Durgesh Nandan Jha | New Delhi

But delayed Govt projects to cost Rs 1,000 cr extra

The austerity bug has bitten the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (CWGOC) too. The committee has decided to do away with music maestro AR Rahman's concert on October 3 in Delhi to mark 'one year to go event' before Commonwealth Games 2010. The cultural extravaganza at Trafalgar Square, London, has also been cancelled.

Officials, however, said these measures won't save the country more than just Rs 6 crore. On the other hand, according to a conservative estimate, the cost overrun due to delay in completion of physical infrastructure for the mega event is already touching Rs 1,000 crore.

"It is an austerity measure in keeping with the Government's initiatives to save money. The AR Rahman concert that was supposed to be held on the occasion of one-year-to-go-event has been cancelled. The cultural extravaganza to be presented by the artists and non-resident Indians living in the United Kingdom on the occasion of the launch of Queen's Baton Relay from Buckingham Palace has also been cancelled. We are also going to travel by economy class," said Suresh Kalmadi, President, Indian Olympic Association.

According to a senior official, the Trafalgar event and the Rahman concert were supposed to cost around Rs 3 crore each, plus other miscellaneous expenses. "But the shortsightedness of the organising committee and its failure to ensure timely completion of Games-related projects will certainly cost a hundred times more money," said the official. He said that extra labour force, cost of technical experts and last-minute attempts to set things right will jack up expenses, besides affecting the quality of work.

Already there have been reports of cost overruns due to increase in the prices of construction materials like steel and cement. The delay in giving clearance to projects by heritage and environment agencies has led to cost overrun in several cases. Also, the DDA had recently announced a Rs 700-crore bailout package for cash-drained EmaarMGF, which is developing the Commonwealth Games Village (CGV) project.

Following the hard-hitting letter from President of the Commonwealth Games Federation Michael Fennel, the Organising Committee has, sources said, issued directions to private developers and Central agencies to speed up the work at any cost.

Huge bills are likely to be cleared with ease in the name of this speeding up work. Also, to make sure that the Green Games theme of 2010 mega event holds true, the Government is purchasing potted plants in large numbers, but no advance plantation of trees has been done. "That is the responsibility of the Delhi Government. You can ask them," said Kalmadi, when asked about the plantation. There was no explanation for the lackadaisical attitude of different civic bodies involved in Games-related projects either.

Construction work is delayed at the main venue, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, where the final design of the stadium is yet to be ready. The weightlifting arena is only 50 per cent complete. There are 19 venues under preparation and work on most of them is behind schedule, in some cases by more than 50 per cent. The Rs 70-crore project to refurbish Karni Singh shooting range is only 45 per cent complete. India's National Rifle Shooting Association has expressed its concern over this, saying the athletes would not able to prepare for the championship if the stadium is not ready on time. Besides, seven-eight projects being implemented at the Indira Gandhi Stadium and Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee swimming complex are also delayed.

Work at the swimming pool complex at Talkatora Stadium is also going slow and the contractors developing it have reportedly requested the CPWD and Ministry of Urban Development to reconsider cost escalation norms recently. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) that has been entrusted with strengthening and beautification of roads connecting the Games venues and betterment of city's civic infrastructure has already been crying hoarse over lack of funds. The civic agency has not started work on the development of Paharganj and Karol Bagh zone that are supposed to provide budget stays for foreign tourists during the Games as the Ministry of Tourism is yet to sanction the money required.

[tscii:816bfcb74a]Anthony D'Souza & ARR | The Duo's next Action Film

After going underwater in Blue, director Tony D’Souza is all set to go midair for breathtaking stunts with hotties Akshay Kumar and John Abraham for his next action film.

This film will be set in the deserts of Las Vegas. Tony has already convinced Blue producers Ashtavinayak, to produce his next film too. Even though several factors have already been finalised, the film will go into pre-production only next year.

After showcasing some stunning underwater scenes in Blue, for his next film, Tony will indulge in hardcore action with his macho star cast. “Akshay was on board for this project right from the start. After Blue, I couldn’t dream of making a film without him. As for John, with his physique and body language, it’s strange for him to have not done a full-on action film in all these years,” said Tony.

Music director AR Rahman, despite his choc-a-block schedule, has agreed to compose the film’s music.

AR Rahman will be the music composer for the film

Tamil film genius Gautham Menon has cast actor Dileep in one of the three films that he will be directing the next year. AR Rahman will be the music composer for the film. It promises to be an entertainer and the rest of the details are yet to be divulged.

Dileep is currently acting in Swantham Lekhakan, which also happens to be the comeback movie of the actress Gopika. He also has other projects at hand like Papi Appacha and another with director Kamal which will have Telugu actress Charmi in a key role in the movie. Kamal's movie was to feature Mamta Mohandas with Dileep, but things taken a different turn and Charmi has replaced her in that slot.

Dileep is slowly delving into his capabilities as a complete artiste, rather than as a comedian and Gautham Menon's offer is a indicator in that direction.

Rahman in Bala's film?
IndiaGlitz [Wednesday, September 23, 2009]

A latest buzz in Tamil cinema is that filmmaker Bala may opt for A R Rahman for his forthcoming film, which would have Arya and Vishal in it.

Rumours were doing rounds that Bala's next venture would feature Jithan Ramesh and Jeeva in lea roles. However the director was tight-lipped. Sources close to Bala now say, "After intense discussion, Bala chose to repeat Arya (who acted in 'Naan Kadavul') along with Vishal for the movie'.

Impressed with the story narrated by Bala, both Arya and Vishal agreed immediately to do the film, it is said. Shooting for the movie might begin this year-end.

Unlike his other films, Bala has planned to completed this film in a short period.

[tscii:9941523846]Director Bala has plans about working with ARR

Post- Naan Kadavul, Bala seems to have zeroed down on actor Aarya again for his next directorial. Since the film is based on the lives of two brothers, Bala seems to have roped in actor Vishal as well.

The latest buzz we hear is that producer Kalapathy S Agoram seems to be much interesting in producing this film. Unlike Bala’s previous films, this untitled flick will be a commercial entertainer with equal mix of comedy and action-packed sequences.

According to the closer sources, they’ve mentioned that for the first time Bala has plans about working with A.R. Rahman. In the past, Ilayaraja had scored music for all his films
(except ‘Nanda’ that had Ilayaraja’s son Yuvan Shankar tuning melodies).

Bala seems to have already completed the script works and would start shooting for the film.

23 September 2009 - 09:36

The music maestro turns down new Hollywood offer.
A. R. Rahman says he won’t refashion the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack for future Western projects.

The Oscar-winning composer has been asked to write the score to new American romantic comedy Couples Retreat, starring Jason Bateman and Vince Vaughn.

Speaking to New Kerala, Rahman said: "There's no point in doing something I've already done. I've reached a stage where I've to do new things.

"They're so many avenues to be explored. So Couples Retreat will be their American kind of music with my touch, done in my way."

According to insiders, the Bollywood composer feels that Slumdog wasn’t his best work, despite winning an Oscar for the song Jai Ho.

He wrote the soundtrack in less than three weeks and feels he could’ve done a lot better if he had more time.

September 22, 2009

Oscar winner AR Rahman is busy scoring the music for the Hollywood comedy Couple’s Retreat starring Jason Bateman, Vince Vaughn, Malin Akerman and Kristen Bell. Speaking about this film, Rahman said that he would not use Indian sounds but would bring in the feel of Indianess in the album.

Rahman said in a recent interview, “I’ve reached a stage where I've to do new things. There are so many avenues to be explored. So Couples Retreat will be their kind of music with my touch, done in my way.”

The musician is also keen that there should be no traces of Slumdog Millionaire. According to sources close to Rahman, the musician feels that his best is yet to come.

[tscii:2abf6708a1]Rahman’s Indianized touch on Couples Retreat
IndiaGlitz [Thursday, September 24, 2009]

If we had expected from A.R. Rahman after his ‘Roja’, the western world expects lot more from him after the success of ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. The Madras Mozart is all making his next show in Hollywood with ‘Couples Retreat’.

So, when the entire globe is looking out for this musical score, Rahman strongly admits, “though it’s a Hollywood movie, it will carry the Indianized touch on music. Or else, it wouldn’t be a meaningful endeavor for me over there.”

Adding more, Rahman uttered that in spite of winning academy awards for ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, this isn’t the best as his previous films 'Roja', 'Uyire', forthcoming projects 'Raavan' and 'Blue'. Precisely, his fans too have entitled the ‘SM’ musical score with same verdict.

[tscii:3a2b29cf59]Roja was my benchmark, says A R Rahman

Rajeev Masand / CNN-IBN
Published on Sun, Sep 27, 2009 at 14:46, Updated on Sun, Sep 27, 2009 at 15:21 in Entertainment section

A meeting between two musical geniuses was in the making but fate cancelled it. Composer A R Rahman, two days before he won two Oscars for Slumdog Millionaire, had received an e-mail invitation from late pop singer Michael Jackson to discuss projects. Rahman talks about Jackson, spirituality and the film that set off his career with CNN-IBN’s Rajeev Masand on To Catch A Star.

Rajeev Masand: May I start by asking you, at an average, how much time do you get to sleep these days? I know that you are committed to doing a lot of work both in India and in America, do you have enough time to really rest?

A R Rahman: I need to sleep, otherwise I fall ill the next day, at least six to seven hours, but sometimes it's in installments.

Rajeev Masand:When you keep the Oscars at home, does everyone want to look at it, touch it?

A R Rahman: I have not seen it for ages. I don't know where it is. It's somewhere in the building I guess.

Rajeev Masand: You have always said that healthy arguments with your directors and lyricists often result in the creation of some very good music. I am guessing after the Oscars no one really wants to argue with you anymore, no one really disputes your suggestions anymore.

A R Rahman: I don't know if it works that way. Because in the interest of any big films, there's always an argument and a vision which is most the director's and if you are sensible you have to go through with that vision. You can't say, "I have written a beautiful song, fitted in the movie, I don't care."

Rajeev Masand: There is a popular perception even amongst your greatest fans that Jai Ho and the music of Slumdog Millionaire isn't necessarily your best music.

A R Rahman: They are not giving me the Oscar for my life, they are giving it for the film and that particular moment the film came in and how different the music and the whole theme was for the film. I am really proud about Slumdog Millionaire’s music and Jai Ho

Rajeev Masand: You have always said that you wouldn't like your commitments here in India to be affected by the work that you want to do outside. And yet the first casualty of success turned out to be Rajiv Menon's film Dhun, he is an old friend of yours, but you are unable to do his film?

A R Rahman: It's a bullet which I have to take and had to give him also. His film is very musically demanding and it requires 24 x 7 attention. I can't give a tune through Internet for that film and I didn't want to stop his film in anyway by delaying. I think he is a great filmmaker. He is like a mini Raj Kumar for me. I am sure he is going to come up with really great film and music.

Rajeev Masand: Did you break his heart?

A R Rahman: I don't know. But I needed to take a stand somewhere, I needed to make a choice of not annoying people. But of course there is always a next time and better things are going to happen.

Rajeev Masand: I am sure that you had chance to look at your biography that was published recently?

A R Rahman: I didn't see much of it because but I have heard of different comments passed by people, good and bad about it.

Rajeev Masand: I think your fans are quite eager to know your reaction to the book especially it was fairly critical of you as well. It did speak about you having abandoned your family after you converted to Islam, it spoke about you having abandoned old band mates?

A R Rahman: I wouldn't say that is true because once I seriously started getting into music, I became spiritual, I wouldn't visit my own sister (laughs) and sometimes music needs that. You can't be everything. And a particular time in life comes in when you can compensate.

Like Gandhi, (I am not comparing myself with Gandhi), but for Gandhi the nation was important, for me the music is important.

Rajeev Masand: The book says you abandoned your band mates, the moment Mani Ratnam signed you for Roja There is a critical view of you. It even talks about references to black magic and voodoo. Did you fee betrayed by this book?

A R Rahman: No, I don't want to hide any of my past. There was an incidence in my family about my father. Lot of people believed that he was killed in black magic. So when you are a child you tend to believe everything. And then my overwhelming spiritual thirst made me vanish all the stuff and now I am clean. I am following the Sufi path and I don't care about anything. About the band, it was supposed to be a temporary band.

There was never a thing like I would have to leave my life to come and play in the band. It was a fun thing. We did one number for an album and I became busy in Roja and my band mates were impatient because they wanted to finish the album. So I said if you are impatient please go ahead because I had taken up something, which doesn't come to every individual. I had the best film director asking me for music. I wanted to give my hundred per cent to the film. However, all of them are living their successful lives today.

Rajeev Masand: The acclaimed playback singer S P Balasubramaniam has a complaint. He says that Rahman has very little regard for language and pronunciation. He is happy to use singers from the North to sing Tamil songs, as long as the tune is fine, he doesn't mind very much the words and language or the accent is mutilated often.

A R Rahman: Not every time. Sometimes it’s good to have something funky. Not for the shake of hurting anything but for entertainment sake but that shouldn't become a habit.

Rajeev Masand: Your music for the film Blue is your first album right after the Oscars.

A R Rahman: It's probably the first time I am doing a film like this which is an entertainer and which is about underwater, so the music naturally became fast and beat oriented but we have tried maintain a balance between making sense of melody speed.

Rajeev Masand: You recorded a track with Kylie Minogue for this film.

A R Rahman: It was the wholesome effect of Kylie Minogue they wanted to have in the film. They wanted her to dance and feature in the film in a small part. And she also wanted that to happen for a long time. So she found it a great opportunity. And strangely, she gave me the BAFTA Awards, and next day we recorded the song.

Rajeev Masand: Are you a fan of her music?

A R Rahman: I do like stuff of hers, she is a really lovely person.

Rajeev Masand: It's popularly and very justifiably believed that some of your best work is with Mani Ratnam. You started with him with Roja and Raavan is your eleventh collaboration with him?

A R Rahman: I think so.

Rajeev Masand: What can we expect?

A R Rahman: I am looking forward to this movie because it is turning out to be a very interesting movie.

Rajeev Masand: Your son recently sang for the film Kapil's Retreat, the American film, which you have composed the score for. He has also sung before for Bose, The Forgotten Hero

A R Rahman: No not for Bose

Rajeev Masand: Which was then?

A R Rahman: It was an animation film, which is still a work in progress and the other song is also work in progress. He (son) is getting musical slowly. I just played him the track and he started singing something, which I recorded and happen to use it. In just a very small portion of the song.

Rajeev Masand: Your daughter has sung for Mangal Pandey as well. What's it like working with your kids?

A R Rahman: They have to be programmed in a way, they have to be told what to do and what not to do.

Rajeev Masand: Your music for Delhi 6 is probably your best since Rang De Basanti. What's your favourite song on that sound track?

A R Rahman: Most of them, Rahena Tu, Maula.

Rajeev Masand: Danny Boyle has bought the rights to Suketa Mehta's book Maximum City. Are you committed to scoring that?

A R Rahman: I spoke to Danny but I didn't hear anything about this. But definitely, it's going to be a very interesting film I guess.

Rajeev Masand: You met Michael Jackson shortly after the Oscars. Tell us about that meeting. He has been your influence in your growing years.

A R Rahman: I was supposed to meet Michael in 1999 but because of his mishap in a concert, I couldn't meet him. After nine years, when I went to Los Angeles, my agent said, “I am gonna meet Michael Jackson's manager”. So I just told him, "can I meet him." He said he would email and see if Michael wanted to meet me. So three or four days before the Oscars, we got an email saying Michael Jackson wanted to meet me. So I went to meet him after winning the Oscars. I thought the meeting would be five minutes but it lasted for two hours.

We talked about my music and how I had written them and that how India adored Michael Jackson. Then he called me saying why don't you do something like We Are The World and you conduct the whole thing. I was shocked. Before getting into that he started going to rehearsals for the This Is It concert and the next thing you hear that he is dead. It was a real shocker.

Rajeev Masand: In your first film album Roja was declared by Time magazine as one of the best film soundtracks of all time, how different is the experience of making music now. Has the process changed very much now?

A R Rahman: Roja was my benchmark. I told Mani Ratnam that this was what I wanted to achieve. He helped me do that in a way, patiently waiting and giving productive inputs. So that continues even now. Today, it's easier to put across my musical vision to musicians because they have heard my music. It was difficult to do that in the initial years. People are more thoughtful that ways. They are doing well.

Rajeev Masand: Thank you so much for doing us proud and speaking to us.

Vellai Pookal going to be used to campaign Water Conservation w/ ARR featuring in vid.

Twin Oscar winner A.R. Rahman has indeed charmed the whole world. He is currently working with some of the biggest names in international music and at the same time, doing his bit for the betterment of the world.

Following his anti-poverty anthem for the UN, the Mozart of Madras is now joining the likes of U2 and Shakira for a global video on water conservation. The video was shot in Filmistan Studios recently. This music video will be aired worldwide through the Internet. The 120 minute webcast is titled 'Moving Stars And Earth For Water' and will also feature U2, Peter Gabriel and Shakira.

Rahman's 3.40-minute music video is based on the musical track 'Vellai Pookal' penned by Vairamuthu, from the movie Kannathil Mutthamittal. This Mani Ratnam classic had won Rahman the National Award. Talking about why he chose this particular track, Rahman said that he always relied on his instincts for music and this track felt perfect for the theme of water conservation.

The video, directed by Deepak Gattani, founder of Rapport Global, will feature Rahman (dressed in white) and kids as the song is addressed to the young generation of today.

The 'Moving Stars And Earth For Water' webcast is pioneered by the Canadian foundation One Drop and it hopes to raise worldwide awareness on water conservation.

ARR to put up grand musical show in Los Angeles!

Mumbai: After Hrs has learnt that AR Rahman is putting up a grand musical show in Los Angeles before the premiere of his forthcoming Hollywood venture.

It promises to be a first-of-its- kind event in Hollywood and the guest list includes Hollywood A-listers like Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Owen Wilson and Sean Penn, besides David and Victoria Beckham, among others. Incidentally, they are all friends of actor Vince Vaugh, who has written the script of the film.

A source close to the development says, "For this grand musical night, Rahman will belt out numbers from his English movie Couples Retreat. Atlanta Soul singer PJ Morton has sung one track in the movie and will also feature in this event alongside Rahman. This will be very different from the usual formal premiere nights in Hollywood. Since the movie has an Indian collaboration, the idea was to add a lot of vibrancy, colour and music."

Rahman's special aide confirmed the news saying, "A big event is being planned in Los Angeles where the who's who of America will be present. The movie's premiere is definitely going to be a star-studded affair but we cannot share the complete guest list."

[tscii:caa69f6082]Jai Ho to Shakti

The Hindu A R Rahman

A. R. Rahman returns to the Chennai stage with ‘Jai Ho’, a fund-raiser concert for The Shakti Foundation on October 11. Divya Kumar reports

It’s taken close to eight months, but it’s finally here. On October 11, double Academy Award winner A.R. Rahman returns to his hometown stage for the first time since his incredible run at the Oscars this year with — fittingly enough — the Chennai edition of his Jai Ho World Series concert.

The concert, to be conducted at the immense Marg Swarnabhoomi grounds on the ECR, will be in aid of The Shakti Foundation, which champions the cause of the physically challenged, a cause Rahman has been closely involved with in the past.

All for a cause
“It’s a great cause, and what they’re doing is great work,” said Rahman, who previously did the music for the foundation’s public awareness documentary on the need for ramps directed by Mani Ratnam and featuring Sachin Tendulkar. “They’ve been asking me to do a concert for them for a couple of years, and I found this was the right time to do it.”

That sentiment does Rahman’s dedication to charity a great deal of credit, considering that time is the one thing he hasn’t had a lot of these past few months.

“This has been a very busy year for me,” he admits, sounding rather careworn at the end of another long day of events and recordings. “If I don’t do this now, I don’t think I will be able to do it next year. We evolve every year... next year will be different from this year, just like the previous year was different from this one.”

For the chairman of The Shakti Foundation, Vasanth Raghuvir, Rahman’s decision is, quite simply, an incredible boost. “That he’s chosen to give his first performance in Chennai for The Shakti Foundation — in spite of several other offers — empowers the children of Shakti and lends tremendous dignity to the cause,” she said.

Part of the Jai Ho concert series that has been travelling around India and will soon be going abroad, this show promises to be something out-of-the-ordinary. “Apart from vintage numbers such as ‘Roja’, this concert will definitely be different from the ones I did here earlier,” said Rahman.

Held on 60 acres at the heart of Swarnabhoomi, the concert will feature a massive 80 by 120 foot stage, with pyrotechnics during the show and huge fireworks afterwards, according to G.R.K. Reddy, chairman and MD of the Marg Group, the sole presenting sponsor of the concert.

“The concert has a special meaning for us, because it raises funds to provide equipment for The Adhiparasakthi Medical and Research Hospital in Melmaruvathur,” he said. “That is where people living in the 200 villages around Swarnabhoomi go for healthcare.”

For Rahman, this concert comes at the end of what was one of the more challenging periods of his career. “The first three months post-Oscar were difficult — there was so much socialising and so many things pulling me out of focus that it took away a lot of my creative time,” he said. “And if I didn’t go and do music, there wouldn’t be any new music next year!”

He added ruefully, “Everywhere I went, 500 people wanted to take photographs, and sometimes I just wanted to be alone and be left alone!”

Back in focus
But now, returning after a four-month stint in Hollywood where he’s wrapped up work on the movie “Couples Retreat”, he’s back in focus. “That was definitely a great change — working with a totally different set of people and a great orchestra,” he said. “Now, for the rest of this year and the next, I’m going to limit myself.”

‘Limiting himself’, in the overworked Rahman’s book, means completing an English album he was signed for post the success of the music of “Slumdog Millionaire”, and finishing the movies he’s already taken on. “I’ll resume work on new films probably next Diwali,” he said.

Meanwhile, there’s the concert on October 11 to look forward to, both a gift of music and an ardent appeal by the Shakti Foundation for the inclusion and integration of the physically challenged into mainstream society. “It’s a great homecoming,” said Rahman.

[tscii:a3659d7d39]WHY IS RAHMAN UPSET?

Just leave me alone,’ seemed to be the meaning behind Rahman’s exasperated look at a press conference that was held recently. After the success of Slumdog Millionaire, his fame has reached phenomenal proportions and the double Oscar-winner has been hounded and surrounded by the news-hungry media everywhere he goes.

The press conference held to officially announce his upcoming concert, was the latest instance. Even as the Mozart of Madras got ready to speak to the media after the event, a barrage of microphones were thrust in his face. One over-enthusiastic reporter from a website went to the extent of almost thrusting the microphone into Rahman’s mouth!

The musician had to be whisked away from the hall through a side door, to avoid chaos and confusion. After fifteen minutes, when the media presence had considerably died down; he was quietly escorted out of the hall.

Quite evidently, there seems to be little reason for the talented musician to say Jai Ho this season!

Abbas is currently shooting some portions of the film in Mumbai. He says, "After a hectic schedule in London, we started shooting in Mumbai, with a two day break in between. The shoot in Mumbai will go on till mid -October. We will then probably go back as soon as I get the dates in place. After the tremendous musical success of “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam” which also timed with a couple of Rahman albums not doing well including my own “Daud” Ismail Darbar was the new musical genius on the block. I called Ismail Darbar up to congratulate him and he didn’t pick up my calls.

Wasnt Daud a 1997 release and HDDCS was a 1999 release? How could he say few ARR albums wasnt doing well when 1998 saw Dil Se and 1999 saw Taal ?? :? [/tscii:c94ac179d6]

[tscii:3b701659c2]Hollywood's calling A.R. Rahman
By ERIKA KINETZ (AP)

MUMBAI, India — Hollywood is finally getting to know A.R. Rahman, the short, humble and deeply religious man who took two Oscars home to southern India for his work on "Slumdog Millionaire."

In the eight months since Slumdog's surprise Oscar sweep, Rahman has survived the rage of felicitation that hit him when he returned to India — even the prime minister offered his congratulations — and embarked on countless lunches with studio executives in L.A. eager to match him with that perfect new film.

In between, he's managed to score two movies, hatched plans with Dave Stewart of Eurythmics to start a band, and is putting together a new solo album.

The Oscars, Rahman said, "got me an identity in the West."

"There won't be any doubts looking at me: Who are you? What are you doing here?" he said by phone from Medina, Saudi Arabia. "I don't have to prove again I can do this and that, and rather can just be cool about my musical statement."

His latest composition is for "Couple's Retreat," a yoga-inflected romantic comedy written, produced by and starring Vince Vaughn, released Friday by Universal Studios.

He spent nearly three months working on "Couple's Retreat," first in London and then in L.A.

"L.A. helped me hide," Rahman said. "I can walk on the streets, which I can't do in India. I can go to a coffee shop and sit there. I have so much freedom, whereas in India I get mobbed."

In India, Rahman enjoys a fanatical pop-star fame that stretches from barefoot slum kids playing cricket to the richest matrons of Mumbai. He has won 18 Filmfare Awards, three MTV Awards, and six Tamil Nadu State Awards, among others. In 2000, he was conferred the highest civilian honor in India, the Padma Shri, for his contributions to the film industry.

But that somehow didn't translate. "Slumdog" did.

Now, Rahman said, he's not just getting work from Hollywood, he's getting good work — projects for which he can set his own artistic terms.

"Since the Oscars and all the appreciation, people come for what I am," he said.

The new album — for Interscope Records, which produced the blockbuster soundtrack to "Slumdog" — is still in its early stages, but Rahman said he hopes to bring together experienced artists like Lady GaGa and M.I.A. with "some really new talents."

"After 'Jai Ho' became number one in 17 countries, they were very excited and said, 'Why don't you do a whole album?'" Rahman said.

He keeps working on his pet project: A classical conservatory he opened two years ago in his hometown of Chennai, in southern India. About 130 students are learning the vanishing arts of the viola, violin and acoustic piano. Rahman said he's also teaching them Indian classical music and electronic composition — the same motley but fortuitous set of skills that holds together his own career.

The "Couple's Retreat" soundtrack veers from the South Indian Carnatic harmonies of "Undressing" to the hip-hop inflected "NaNa." Shyam Benegal, an award-winning Indian director — he also got the Padma Shri — who hired Rahman to make music for two of his films, says Rahman has created "a musical bridge."

"He has bridged the musical distance between the way the Western ear responds and the way the Indian ear responds," he said. "It's very difficult to say how."

The foundations of that bridge were laid when Rahman was a child. After his composer father died, Rahman took up playing the keyboard for movies in south India's burgeoning Tamil-language film industry. He was just 12.

"I had to work because we had the keyboards," he said. "My mother said, 'Why don't you learn them? It's such an advantage for you to have them.'"

"I was almost the breadwinner of the family," he added.

After studying under several masters of classical Indian music, he won a scholarship to the Trinity College of Music in London and took a degree in Western classical music. His break in India came when he was 23 and noted director Mani Ratnam asked him to score his film "Roja."

Since then he's worked on over 100 movies in India.

"His fees have gone up a lot," said director Benegal. "He may be the most expensive composer in India today working on films. That he is. But what he gives to you, even in financial terms, the recovery is almost instantaneous."

Still, Hollywood's remunerative embrace could price India's favorite son out of his home market.

"If he charged me Hollywood rates," Benegal said, "I wouldn't be able to pay."

[tscii:ae07b1f67f]Rahman shows the Tamil way to Hollywood
IndiaGlitz [Tuesday, October 13, 2009]

If the entire globe is looking out for his musical score, the western world expects a lot more from him after the success of ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. Our Oscar Nayagan has given a romantic Tamil song that goes like “Kuru Kuru Kangaliley Ennai Aval Vendraley” for his Hollywood project ‘Couples Retreat’.

The man, who made Indians proud by his Oscar, has now made Tamils proud by inserting a Tamil song for a Hollywood project. Enjoy the sound track of the film and experience listening to a Tamil song with Hollywood’s sound quality. It’s sure to win peoples’ heart across the globe with its freshness…

Rahman strongly admits, “Though it’s a Hollywood movie, it will carry the Indianized touch in it”. For that reason, not just this song, but the entire album will have the desi touch.

So the world can get ready for many more ‘Roja’ and ‘Uyire’.

IndiaGlitz [Tuesday, October 13, 2009]

“Events like ‘Ability Fest 2009’ would make a huge difference in the way the public view disability. This reiterates the fact that films can make a positive change in society,” music composer A R Rahman said on Monday.

Speaking at the inauguration of ‘Ability Fest 2009,’ a four-day India International Disability Film Festival in Chennai, he said it was a welcome thing that themes such as disability, environment and human rights are attracting the attention of the organizers.

In her address, Tabu said filmmakers should be more sensitive while portraying disability as films were an effective tool to change the mindset of the people.

Audio description technology, which enables audience with visual disabilities to understand the silent parts of a movie, was launched during the festival. The technology will be used in the closing film ‘Taare Zameen Par’ on October 15.

“They (visually challenged persons) would be given headphones and the silent parts of the movies will be described in detail for them,” said festival vice-chairperson Revathy. US Consul-General, South India, Andrew T Simkin, festival director P K Nair and festival chairperson Jayshree Raveendran also spoke.

The four-day festival will screen over 30 movies that have gained international recognition for their sensitive portrayal of disability. The films will be screened from 10 am at Sathyam Cinemas till October 15.

[tscii:6653e91d25]I never rate my music: Rahman

Post the colossal fame and the trappings that came with the Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire, Rahman’s finally back doing what he does best – AR Rahman More Pics
music. His first Hollywood score after the double delight – Couples Retreat (CR) – has just hit screens abroad and he’s excited that it’s doing well.

Working on a Hollywood score has given the musician a chance to explore a variety of genres. “The music might be subtly mixed in the film, but it serves the purpose perfectly,” says Rahman about his experience, “My primary aim while composing the music was to bring out the spirit of the island the couples go to. At some places, I had to give them what the film required and at some, I gave them the type of music that I’m known for. Getting that balance was quite a challenge.”

Lyrically yours
One of the highlights of the CR score is that it features a Tamil song titled Kurukuru Kan ... . So, how did Rahman decide to provide local flavour to a global film? “The makers wanted something exotic to suit the spirit of the island,” recalls Rahman, “It could have been African, Indian or anything else. But then, Tamil can be exotic too!”

That’s when the idea of including a Tamil number crept into the ace musician’s mind. “I sat down and penned the lyrics myself,” he reveals, “But honestly, it wasn’t much of a task as I just needed a string of words that sounded interesting phonetically. They loved the track and gave me the go ahead.” So, is this the first time that the musician has tried his hand at penning lyrics? “In a way, yes,” he states.

The student phase
Used to the routine give-me-a-track-for-the-situation, Rahman found the manner in which Hollywood works, interesting and radically different. “Marks were given to each department once work was finished,” he says, “For instance, once I composed a track, it used to be played out and the unit would judge it and give it points. They would then discuss whether it would work or not for the audience.”

This method of working was something entirely new to Rahman, who feels that it would be great if local filmmakers took a leaf out of their book. “It happens all the time — after a film releases, we have the audience saying things like ‘one song didn’t work, the second half was a bit boring’,” he says, “If an outsider’s point of view is taken before the film releases, it sets the ground for better films.”

Perfect ‘son’rise
The Nana... song is the most popular piece of CR, which features 15 tracks. And, it’s close to the musician’s heart as it marks the singing debut of his son! “Yes, Nana... is the hot favourite abroad,” he gushes, “Making my son sing a couple of lines was not a big ordeal at all. He was fooling around in the room when I was composing the song. And, just as an experiment, I made him sing a couple of lines and recorded it. I used it because it fit the mood of the track perfectly.”

How many marks would he give himself out of ten for his first Hollywood soundtrack, post the Oscar success? “I never rate my music,” he states matter-of-factly.

Catch the Musician of the Millennium on ETC Bollywood Business

MUMBAI: In a conversation that captures the highlights of the maestro's spectacular career, A R Rehman said to trade analyst Taran Adarsh, "In a studio, there are no bosses. Art is the boss."

Words of the genius! When asked about the Tamilian's grouse against him, he said "Tamilians keep complaining I've left them and gone to Hindi. I want to do what excites me, at the same time, I respect the people who've helped me reach where I am".

When asked about his spontaneous manner of recording songs at a very short notice, Rehman said, "I do my songs instinctively and I call up the singer to come and record the next day. At times, I miss out on the more established singers since they're busy. But this has helped me scout out and introduce some good new talent."

Don't miss the legenadary composer's interview on Thursday, 15th Oct at 8:30 PM on ETC.

[tscii:ba2f90dc79]Here’s A.R. Rahman Unplugged

On Jai ho & Vince Vaughn, Kylie Minogue & Farhan Akhtar, Mani & money

A.R. Rahman at Hyatt Regency on Tuesday.

Q: You will be performing in Calcutta after more than six-and-a-half years. Has the Rahman sound changed in this period?

A: I have never changed my sound intentionally. Most of my soundtracks reflect what film I am doing. It’s only that. It’s never like I want to beat this sound or I want to do something better. But I do change myself. I do not want to do the same thing. I want to keep my job interesting to me.

Q:There have been reports that you have been hiding in Los Angeles…

A: The three months immediately after the Oscars were hard to handle. Everyone wanted to felicitate me and have me over at social functions and congratulate me in ceremonies. I went to Los Angeles and went back to my music. Now, life is back to normal.

Q:Why did you choose the Vince Vaughn's Couples Retreat as your first Hollywood project after Slumdog Millionaire?

A: I got that offer before I got all the awards for Slumdog Millionaire. Vince Vaughn came to me much before the Oscars. He just saw the movie and he became very emotional and he said: “I want your music for my next film!” I was contemplating whether to accept the movie or not. Then after the Oscars, I went and saw the movie. I felt that it wasn’t a musically sympathetic movie but it was a comedy. And nobody would ever think that a person who did Slumdog would do a comedy next. And I just wanted to experience the whole process of Hollywood. It was a great experience.

Q: What makes it a great experience?

A: You know just the opportunity to go and work in studios where Mary Poppins and Star Wars were recorded, it’s a great feeling. Also, it was fun working with Vince and with the director of Couples Retreat, Peter (Billingsley) . He’s a new guy and it was good.

Q: But Couples Retreat the film has been very poorly received there and the reviews say your music has been under-utilised…

A: It is a comedy… it’s not a film where there were extraordinary musical situations. It’s also a complicated movie about four couples, who all have resolutions. And some of the score, which is significant in the film, is licensed stuff… like Ennio Morricone’s The Good, The Bad and The Ugly…. I know that this would happen but I had the opportunity of doing a great CD. And the CD is being liked by everyone.

Q: Of the work that has been offered to you in the West, are they all asking for aSlumdog-like score from you?

A: No. Because they would never want to repeat the same thing. I am in a very extra-ordinary situation where I can do songs and I can do background scores. I have not been typecast… like “He’s a background score guy” or “He can only compose songs”. So, I have been trying to expand on that. Even in Couples, I have done three songs and then I have also done the background.

Q: Do you have a wishlist of producers or directors you want to work with?

A: No, I don’t want to have a wishlist. Because some things look very small in the beginning and they become bigger in the end. Like Slumdog. And some things look very big at the beginning and end up really small. So I don’t have any wishlist.

Q: Was Slumdog ever small?

A: Honestly, I would have never sent the score to the Oscars. The makers did. I composed the soundtrack in three weeks flat and didn’t think that it would go on to do what it did.

Q: Do you think it was all because of that one song, Jai ho?

A:When I saw the film, they had put another song (Shankar Ehsaan Loy’s Aaj ki raat fromDon) and all that dancing was part of the film. At that time, it looked like a mockery of our song and dance. But when they used it in the end credits with Jai ho, it looked really nice. See, Jai ho became Jai ho because it was apt for the film, not because it was a great song. It was the right song and that’s why it worked out so well.

Q: So, you haven’t given any brief to your Hollywood agent?

A: He is always surprised by my decisions. He said: “It’s (Couples) a comedy! Don’t do a comedy!” I said, why not? So, it goes like that.

Q:How do you plan to balance your work here with your work there?

A:It’s difficult choosing. I want to keep that little chain of interest of people wanting to hear my music. I don’t want to overdo that. Also, I don’t want to underplay that. So there will be Tamil films, Telugu films, Hindi films and there will be English films too. I want to choose the best projects that complement my music.

Q: Now when you compose for Mani Ratnam’s Raavan, is it like a return to roots because you started with his Roja?

A: It is, in a way. Also, Mani always surprises me. I think that now I know Mani Ratnam. But he surprises me. He keeps pushing me to a place where I am challenged and that’s a great creative spirit. And that’s what I need to keep going, rather than taking each other for granted. There’s something we always want to achieve as a team.

Q:What motivated you to sign this Friday’s big release Blue?

A: I signed it before the Oscars. New people are really unpredictable. (Blue is directed by debutant Anthony D’Souza.) You never know. Sometimes they are great and sometimes they let you down. Blue also had a big production house like Ashtavinayak supporting the film. Then when I saw the visuals, it seemed like something genuinely interesting, something passionate.

Q: What about the Kylie Minogue experience?

A: It was all finished in three hours (laughs). She was very fast. Actually it was also one week before the BAFTAs and I also had to finish recording the song.

Q: Why didn’t Farhan Akhtar sing for the Blue soundtrack, as you had wanted?

A: The song changed from what we wanted to make it. And he wasn’t very sure that the song went with his style of singing and whether he would be able to pull it off. Whether it would be right for him. So I said, okay, we will work on something else later. The song was Fiqrana, actually. And I was happy that Vijay Prakash got a huge opportunity.

Q: What are you planning with Dave Stewart of Eurythmics fame?

A: We are planning a lot of things actually. He is a dear friend whom I know for more than eight years now. We are trying to put up a band together, like a super band. Also, he is doing a movie for Nokia and I am helping him out on Indianising it.

Q:What about your own English album?

A: I am currently working on it. It will have a lot of pop musicians. I am not sure who at this stage. But it is definitely the project I am really looking forward to, after doing so many film soundtracks.

Q: If a director from Bengal walks up to you with his script, would you do the music?

A: If it’s something special, I would love to do it. If I find it inspiring, I would do it. I have seen a lot of great work coming from here.

Q: But will you charge him a bomb?

A: Charge is never a problem (smiles)!
